Considerations for in situ, real time measurement of plasma-material interactions using Digital Holographic imaging

Digital Holographic (DH) imaging is a laser-based measurement technique, which can be used to monitor a material surface as it is being exposed to fusion-relevant plasmas. Both single-laser and dual-laser DH measurements have been demonstrated ex situ at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). A DH diagnostic system is being assessed for deployment at ORNL to make in situ, real-time measurements of plasma erosion/redeposition in the Prototype Material Plasma Exposure eXperiment (Proto-MPEX). In situ, real time measurements pose unique challenges to diagnostic systems, which are not encountered by ex situ analysis techniques. The absolute surface height (tracked at the nm to μm position) during plasma exposure can be modified by: 1) surface movement due to vibration or thrust exerted by the plasma device, 2) surface growth due to the thermal expansion of the material under steady MW/m2 or transient GW/m2 plasma heat loads, and 3) surface modification due to plasma erosion/redeposition of the material substrate. To assess these effects, 1) the vibration spectrum of the diagnostic and the pulsed plasma device have been measured, 2) the thermal growth of the surface has been measured for an applied heat flux, and 3) the surface modification has been measured ex situ post plasma exposure, and ex situ post laser ablation as a proxy for the plasma. This paper will provide an overview of the results that have been achieved in the development of a DH diagnostic for in situ real-time measurements of plasma exposed surfaces in the Proto-MPEX device.

Stress inside the pion in holographic light-front QCD

In this work, we propose a method to compute the gravitational form factor D ( Q 2 ) in holographic QCD by exploiting the remarkable correspondence between semiclassical light-front QCD and semiclassical field theories in wrapped spacetime in five dimensions. The use of light-front holography bridges physics at large Q 2 as attained in light-front QCD and physics at small Q 2 where the coupling to scalar and tensor fields, e.g. glueballs, are dominant. As an application, we compute the D -term for the pion and compare the results with recent lattice simulations. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

On the holographic dual of a symmetry operator at finite temperature

Topological symmetry operators of holographic large 𝑁 CFT 𝐷 ’s are dual to dynamical branes in the gravity dual AdS 𝐷+1 . We use this correspondence to establish a dictionary between thermal expectation values of symmetry operators in the Euclidean CFT 𝐷 and the evaluation of gravitational saddles in the presence of a dynamical brane. Expectation values of 0-form symmetry operators in the CFT 𝐷 are then related to branes wrapped on volume minimizing cycles in the bulk, i.e., the Euclidean continuation of a black hole horizon. We illustrate with some representative examples, including gravity in AdS 3 , duality/triality defects in four-dimensional 𝒩 = 4 super Yang-Mills theory, and the dual of R-symmetry operators probing five-dimensional Bogomol’nyi–Prasad–Sommerfield black holes.

Sterile neutrinos, black hole vacuum and holographic principle

We construct an effective field theory (EFT) model that describes matter field interactions with Schwarzschild mini-black-holes (SBH’s), treated as a scalar field, B 0 (x). Fermion interactions with SBH’s require a complex spurion field, θ ij , which we interpret as the EFT description of “holographic information,” which is correlated with the SBH as a composite system. We consider Hawking’s virtual black hole vacuum (VBH) as a Higgs phase, $\langle$B 0 $\rangle$=V. Integrating sterile neutrino loops, the information field θij is promoted to a dynamical field, necessarily developing a tachyonic instability and acquiring a VEV of order the Planck scale. For N sterile neutrinos this breaks the vacuum to SU(N) × U(1)/SO(N) with N degenerate Majorana masses, and 12N(N+1) Nambu-Goldstone neutrino-Majorons. The model suggests many scalars fields, corresponding to all fermion bilinears, may exist bound nonperturbatively by gravity.

New horizons in the holographic conformal phase transition

Abstract We describe 5D dynamical cosmological solutions of the stabilized holographic dilaton and their role in completion of the conformal phase transition. This analysis corresponds, via the AdS/CFT dictionary, to a study of out-of-equilibrium dynamics where trajectories of the dilaton do not depend solely on thermodynamic quantities in the early universe, but have sensitivity also to initial conditions. Unlike the well-studied thermal transition, which requires quantum tunneling of an infrared brane through the surface of an AdS-Schwarzschild horizon, our approach instead invokes an early epoch in which the cosmology is fully 5-dimensional, with highly relativistic brane motion and with Rindler horizons obscuring the infrared brane at early times. In this context, we demonstrate the existence of a large class of natural initial conditions that seed trajectories where the brane simply passes through the Rindler horizon and into the basin of attraction of the stabilized dilaton potential. This corresponds to successful completion of the phase transition without sacrificing perturbativity of the 5D theory.

Warped compactifications and holographic duality

We review warped compactifications of superstring theory with some attention to the limit in which these resemble “bottom-up” phenomenological models. In addition to some discussion of the original Klebanov–Witten and Klebanov–Strassler setups, we also touch on various generalizations of the geometry that have been considered. Various other systems with a holographic duality are also briefly reviewed. The point of this latter exploration is to illustrate how far beyond the standard AdS 5 × S 5 setup things have moved over the years.

A general framework for gravitational charges and holographic renormalization

We develop a general framework for constructing charges associated with diffeomorphisms in gravitational theories using covariant phase space techniques. This framework encompasses both localized charges associated with space–time subregions, as well as global conserved charges of the full space–time. Expressions for the charges include contributions from the boundary and corner terms in the subregion action, and are rendered unambiguous by appealing to the variational principle for the subregion, which selects a preferred form of the symplectic flux through the boundaries. The Poisson brackets of the charges on the subregion phase space are shown to reproduce the bracket of Barnich and Troessaert for open subsystems, thereby giving a novel derivation of this bracket from first principles. In the context of asymptotic boundaries, we show that the procedure of holographic renormalization can be always applied to obtain finite charges and fluxes once suitable counterterms have been found to ensure a finite action. This enables the study of larger asymptotic symmetry groups by loosening the boundary conditions imposed at infinity. We further present an algorithm for explicitly computing the counterterms that renormalize the action and symplectic potential, and, as an application of our framework, demonstrate that it reproduces known expressions for the charges of the generalized Bondi–Metzner–Sachs algebra.

Ultraviolet digital holographic microscopy (DHM) of micron-scale particles from shocked Sn ejecta

A cloud of very fast, O (km/s), and very fine, O (µm), particles may be ejected when a strong shock impacts and possibly melts the free surface of a solid metal. To quantify these dynamics, this work develops an ultraviolet, long-working distance, two-pulse Digital Holographic Microscopy (DHM) configuration and is the first to replace film recording with digital sensors for this challenging application. A proposed multi-iteration DHM processing algorithm is demonstrated for automated measures of the sizes, velocities, and three-dimensional positions of non-spherical particles. Ejecta as small as 2 µm diameter are successfully tracked, while uncertainty simulations indicate that particle size distributions are accurately quantified for diameters ≥4 µm. These techniques are demonstrated on three explosively driven experiments. Measured ejecta size and velocity statistics are shown to be consistent with prior film-based recording, while also revealing spatial variations in velocities and 3D positions that have yet to be widely investigated. Having eliminated time-consuming analog film processing, the methodologies proposed here are expected to significantly accelerate future experimental investigation of ejecta physics.

Holographic Weyl anomaly in string theory

We compute the worldsheet sphere partition function of string theory on global AdS 3 with pure NS-NS flux. Because of an unfixed Möbius symmetry on the worldsheet, there is a cancellation of infinities and only a part of the answer is unambiguous. We show that it precisely reproduces the holographic Weyl anomaly and the ambiguous terms correspond to the possible counterterms of the boundary CFT.

Holographic Lithography for Industrial Nanomanufacturing

The participant constructed interference lithography experiments on their prototype of a coordinated holographic industrial-scale electromagnetic lithography (CHISEL) tool. These experiments involved generating several laser beams and interfering them in photosensitive materials, whereupon subsequent development resulted in micro- and nano-structured samples. We characterized these samples using scanning electron microscopy and various optical interrogation methods.

QCD Equation of State and Phase Diagram from Holographic Black Holes

By using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we construct an Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton model to map the thermodynamics of strongly interacting matter. The holographic model, constrained to reproduce the lattice QCD equation of state at zero baryon chemical potential, predicts a critical end point and a first order phase transition line. We also obtain the equation of state of the model for a large region of the phase diagram. We characterize the crossover transition region by two lines, one associated to the inflection of the second order baryon susceptibility, and another one associated to the minimum of the square of the speed of sound along trajectories of constant entropy per baryon number. We observe that both lines merge at the critical point.

QCD Equilibrium and Dynamical Properties from Holographic Black Holes

By using gravity/gauge correspondence, we employ an Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton model to compute the equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium properties of a hot and baryon rich strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma. The family of 5-dimensional holographic black holes, which are constrained to mimic the lattice QCD equation of state at zero density, is used to investigate the temperature and baryon chemical potential dependence of the equation of state. We also obtained the baryon charge conductivity, and the bulk and shear viscosities with a particular focus on the behavior of these observables on top of the critical end point and the line of first order phase transition predicted by the model.

Color Transparency and Light-Front Holographic QCD

Color transparency, the reduction of initial-state or final-state interactions in coherent nuclear processes, is a natural prediction of QCD (quantum chromodynamics) provided that small-sized or point-like configurations (PLCs) are formed in high-momentum transfer, high-energy, semi-exclusive processes. I use the Frankfurt-Miller-Strikman criteria for the existence of PLCs to show that the wave functions of light-front holographic QCD, as currently formulated, do not contain a PLC.

Discretely Charged Dark Matter in Inflation Models Based on Holographic Space-Time

The holographic space-time (HST) model of inflation has a potential explanation for dark matter as tiny primordial black holes. Motivated by a recent paper of Barrau, we propose a version of this model where some of the inflationary black holes (IBHs), whose decay gives rise to the Hot Big Bang, carry the smallest value of a discrete symmetry charge. The fraction f of IBHs carrying this charge is difficult to estimate from first principles, but we determine it by requiring that the crossover between radiation and matter domination occurs at the correct temperature T eq ~ 1eV=10 –28 M P . The fraction is small, f ~ 2×10 –9 , so we believe this gives an extremely plausible model of dark matter.

Holographic pseudoentanglement and the complexity of the AdS/CFT dictionary

The `quantum gravity in the lab' paradigm suggests that quantum computers might shed light on quantum gravity by simulating the CFT side of the AdS/CFT correspondence and mapping the results to the AdS side. This relies on the assumption that the duality map (the `dictionary') is efficient to compute. In this work, we show that the complexity of the AdS/CFT dictionary is surprisingly subtle: there might be cases in which one can efficiently apply operators to the CFT state (a task we call 'operator reconstruction') without being able to extract basic properties of the dual bulk state such as its geometry (which we call 'geometry reconstruction'). Geometry reconstruction corresponds to the setting where we want to extract properties of a completely unknown bulk dual from a simulated CFT boundary state. We demonstrate that geometry reconstruction may be generically hard due to the connection between geometry and entanglement in holography. In particular we construct ensembles of states whose entanglement approximately obey the Ryu-Takayanagi formula for arbitrary geometries, but which are nevertheless computationally indistinguishable. This suggests that even for states with the special entanglement structure of holographic CFT states, geometry reconstruction might be hard. This result should be compared with existing evidence that operator reconstruction is generically easy in AdS/CFT. A useful analogy for the difference between these two tasks is quantum fully homomorphic encryption (FHE): this encrypts quantum states in such a way that no efficient adversary can learn properties of the state, but operators can be applied efficiently to the encrypted state. We show that quantum FHE can separate the complexity of geometry reconstruction vs operator reconstruction, which raises the question whether FHE could be a useful lens through which to view AdS/CFT.

Holographic codes and bulk RG flows

We consider the coarse-graining of holographic quantum error correcting codes under a generalized notion of bulk renormalization-group flow. In particular, we study the renormalization under this flow of the $A/4G$ term in the Faulkner-Lewkowycz-Maldacena formula and in its Rényi generalization. This provides a general quantum code perspective on the arguments of Susskind and Uglum. Specifically, given a 'UV' code with two-sided recovery and appropriately flat entanglement spectrum together with a set of 'seed' states in the UV code, we explicitly construct an 'IR' code with corresponding properties which contains the given seed states and is of minimal size in a sense we describe.

Holographic Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy and the quantum Lyapunov spectrum

In classical chaotic systems the entropy, averaged over initial phase space distributions, follows a universal behavior. While approaching thermal equilibrium it passes through a stage where it grows linearly, while the growth rate, the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy (rate), is given by the sum over all positive Lyapunov exponents. A natural question is whether a similar relation is valid for quantum systems. We argue that the Maldacena-Shenker-Stanford bound on quantum Lyapunov exponents implies that the upper bound on the growth rate of the entropy, averaged over states in Hilbert space that evolve towards a thermal state with temperature T, should be given by πT times the thermal state’s von Neumann entropy. Strongly coupled, large N theories with black hole duals should saturate the bound. To test this we study a large number of isotropization processes of random, spatially homogeneous, far from equilibrium initial states in large N, $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 Super Yang Mills theory at strong coupling and compute the ensemble averaged growth rate of the dual black hole’s apparent horizon area. We find both an analogous behavior as in classical chaotic systems and numerical evidence that the conjectured bound on averaged entropy growth is saturated granted that the Lyapunov exponents are degenerate and given by λ i = ±2πT. This fits to the behavior of classical systems with plus/minus symmetric Lyapunov spectra, a symmetry which implies the validity of Liouville’s theorem.

Holographic non-Fermi liquids at large d

Motivated by the results of Dynamical Mean Field Theory, we study the two-point function of fermions moving in a charged black brane background in AdS d +1 in the limit of large d . We observe the emergence of a locally critical form of the fermion self-energy, with a strongly constrained range of possible scaling behaviors at large d . Novelties compared to the analysis in d = 3, 4 include an enlarged regime of temperatures where the results apply, and the analytical tractability of the calculations.
