Exploratory study on the effects of novel diamine curing agents and isocyanate precursors on the properties of new epoxy and urethane adhesives

The effects of novel aromatic diamine structures on the adhesive properties of epoxy and polyurethane adhesives were studied. Aromatic diamines based on benzophenone and diphenyl-methane isomers were evaluated as curing agents for epoxy resins and benzophenone and diphenyl-methane based diamine isomers were evaluated as curing agents for polyurethane adhesives. Polyurethane adhesives were prepared based on m, m prime-diisocyanato-diphenyl-methane and m, m prime-diisocyanato-benzophenone. The m, m prime-diisocayanato-diphenyl-methane based adhesive had properties comparable to state-of-the-art adhesives. The m, m prime-diisocyanato-benzophenone based adhesive was extremely reactive.

Moessbauer effect measurement in single crystal iron subjected to cyclic stress

Backscattered Moessbauer spectra were recorded at different fatigue levels in cyclically fatigued high-purity single-crystal iron specimens in the form of rectangular strips with appropriate concentrators in the midplane. The Moessbauer spectra were submitted to a least-squares analysis to determine the isomer shift, quadrupole shift, hyperfine field, and peak spectral widths in each spectrum. It is shown that the quadrupole shift and the isomer shift changed little with fatigue, whereas the effective internal field and the associate line widths exhibit significant variation as a function of fatigue level. It is concluded that the impurity concentration builds up slowly with increasing fatigue level in the region of stress concentration. Since there is a direct correlation between crack initiation and defect concentration level, it is expected that Moessbauer measurements in the test specimen can provide a means of monitoring the impurity buildup presumed to be the eventual cause of fatigue crack initiation and failure.

Metastable states of small rare gas crystallites

Metastable states of rare gas crystallites containing N atoms are investigated for N = 5,6,7, and 8. In particular, the stability, structures, structural transformation, and binding energy versus temperature are determined using a Monte Carlo method. The square pyramid isomer for N = 5 is found to be unstable at any finite temperature. The other metastable isomers are all found to make spontaneous transitions to the ground state if the temperature is greater than about one half that of meltings. Comparisons with previous work are also made

Theoretical study of HSiO/+/ and HOSi/+/

Results are reported for quantum-mechanical studies of the ions HSiO(+) and HOSi(+). The equilibrium geometries, rotation constants, and relative stabilities of these ions are determined using the matrix Hartree-Fock model with a basis set of Slater exponential functions. Optimum bond lengths are calculated, and an empirical correction to the computed bond lengths is introduced. The isomer HOSi(+) is found to be more stable than HSiO(+). A frequency of 35.77 GHz is obtained for the J = 1-0 transition of HOSi(+) by assuming that the vibration-rotation interaction constants for this isomer are the same as those for HCP.

Ultrasonic mixing of epoxy curing agents

A new technique for mixing solid curing agents into liquid epoxy resins using ultrasonic energy was developed. This procedure allows standard curing agents such as 4,4 prime-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (4,4 prime-DDS) and its 3,3 prime-isomer, (3,3 prime-DDS) to be mixed without prior melting of the curing agent. It also allows curing agents such as 4,4 prime-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (4,4 prime-DDS) and its 3,3 prime-isomer, (3,3 prime-DDS) to be mixed without prior melting of the curing agent. It also allows curing agents with very high melt temperatures such as 4,4 prime-diaminobenzophenone (4,4 prime-DABP) (242 C) to be mixed without premature curing. Four aromatic diamines were ultrasonically blended into MY-720 epoxy resin. These were 4,4 prime-DDS; 3,3 prime-DDA; 4,4 prime-DABP and 3,3 prime-DABP. Unfilled moldings were cast and cured for each system and their physical and mechanical properties compared.

Chlorine nitrate - The sole product of the ClO + NO2 + M recombination

A laser operating at 266 nm is used to photolyze the product of the ClO + NO2 + M reaction, and the yield of Cl atoms, measured by resonance fluorescence, is found to be identical with that from equivalent concentrations of ClONO2. This is interpreted as a strong indication that no other isomers are formed in the recombination reaction. Evidence for isomers is surveyed, and the apparent forward-and-reverse-rate constant discrepancy is explained as a probable uncertainty in the thermochemistry.

Stereoselective aminoacylation of a dinucleoside monophosphate by the imidazolides of DL-alanine and N-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-DL-alanine

The aminoacylation of diinosine monophosphate was studied experimentally. When the acylating agent was the imidazolide of N-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-DL-alanine, a 40 percent enantiomeric excess of the isomer was incorporated at the 2' site and the positions of equilibrium for the reversible 2'-3' migration reaction differed for the D and L enantiomers. The reactivity of the nucleoside hydroxyl groups was found to decrease on the order 2'(3') less than internal 2' and less than 5', and the extent of the reaction was affected by the concentration of the imidazole buffer. Reaction of IpI with imidazolide of unprotected DL-alanine, by contrast, led to an excess of the D isomer at the internal 2' site. Finally, reaction with the N-carboxy anhydride of DL-alanine occurred without stereoselection. These results are found to be relevant to the study of the evolution of optical chemical activity and the origin of genetically directed protein synthesis.

Theoretical investigation of the interstellar CH3NC/CH3CN ratio

Calculations have been performed to determine the abundance ratio of the metastable isomer CH3NC to the stable isomer CH3CN in dense interstellar clouds. According to gas phase, ion-molecule treatments, these molecules are both synthesized via protonated ion precursors. A calculation has been made of the ratio of the formation rates of the protonated precursor ions, CH3NCH(+) and CH3CNH(+), synthesized via the radiative association reaction between CH3(+) and HCN, which is thought to be the dominant formation process of the two isomeric ions. The calculations, which involve both ab initio quantum chemistry and equilibrium determinations, lead to a predicted CH3NCH(+)/CH3CNH(+) formation rate ratio between 0.1 and 0.4. If this ratio is maintained in the neutral species formed from the precursor ions, theory predicts a sizable abundance for methyl isocyanide (CH3NC) and lends credence to its tentative observation.

Photoconversion from the light-adapted to the dark-adapted state of bacteriorhodopsin

The dark and light adaptation of the bR(trans)570 (bacteriorhodopsin) and bR(cis)550 isomers is analyzed. The equilibrium between the two bR isomers in light-adapted purple membrane films is studied in terms of the wavelength of actinic light and hydration levels. Absorption spectra observed after light adaptations with red and yellow light reveal that red light is less efficient in converting bR(cis)550 to bR(trans)570 than yellow light and the amount of bR(cis)550 in a light-adapted sample increases with decreasing hydration. The rate constants of dark and light adaptation are evaluated; the rate constant of dark adaptation is independent of the hydration level and the rate constant of light adaptation increases with hydration. The acceleration of a dark adaptation by red light is investigated; the dependence of the accelerated dark adaptation on the light intensity is discussed. The action spectrum of light adaptation in a purple membrane suspension is compared with the absorption spectrum of bR(cis)550; correlation between the spectra reveals that cis-to-transconversion is due to excitation of bR(cis)550 and the mechanism of cis-to-trans conversion in film is not affected by humidity levels. It is noted that the light-driven trans-to-cis conversion is a single photon process. The branching at M410 from the all-trans into the 13-cis photocycle is examined.

Amino acids of the Murchison meteorite. III - Seven carbon acyclic primary alpha-amino alkanoic acids

All of the eighteen possible seven-carbon acyclic primary alpha-amino alkanoic acids have been positively identified in a hot-water extract of the Murchison meteorite by the combined use of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, ion exchange chromatography and reversed-phase chromatography. None of these amino acids has previously been found in meteorites or in any other natural material. They range in concentration from less than or equal to 0.5 to 5.3 nmol/g. Configuration assignments were made for 2-amino-3,4-dimethylpentanoic acid and allo-2-amino-3,4-dimethylpentanoic acid and the diasteromer ratio was determined. Fifty-five amino acids have now been positively identified in the Murchison meteorite, 36 of which are unknown in terrestrial materials. This unique suite of amino acids is characterized by the occurrence of all structural isomers within the two major classes of amino acids represented, by the predominance of branched chain isomers, and by an exponential decline in amount with increasing carbon chain length within homologous series. These characteristics of the Murchison amino acids are suggestive of synthesis before incorporation into a parent body.

Isomeric bismaleimides and polyaspartimides

The properties of a series of bismaleimides and polyaspartimides synthesized from the 3,3', 3,4', and 4,4' isomers of diaminodiphenylmethane are described and compared. The effects of the amine isomerism on the characteristics of bismaleimides and their polymers are investigated. It is observed that the 3,3'-bismaleimide had the highest crystalline melting point, the 4,4' isomer the lowest, and the 3,4'-bismaleimide was slightly above the all-para compounds; for the polyaspartimides, the all-para combinations had the highest glass transition temperature (218 C) and the all-meta the lowest (168 C). The data reveal that strong, flexible films were obtained only from the polyaspartimides made from the 4,4'-diamine/4,4'bismaleimide and the 3,4'-diamine/3,4'bismaleimide combinations; and the tensile properties of the 3,4'polymer films were as good as those of the 4,4 'polymer.

Degradation mechanisms of sulfur and nitrogen containing compounds during thermal stability testing of model fuels

The degradation behavior of n-dodecane (singly or in combination with S- and N-containing dopants) was studied using a modified Jet Fuel Thermal Oxidation Tester facility between 200 and 400 C. The products were analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The soluble products consisted mainly of n-alkanes and 1-alkenes, aldehydes, tetrahydrofuran derivatives, dodecanol and dodecanone isomers, C21-C24 alkane isomers, and dodecylhydroperoxide (ROOH) decomposition products. The major products were always the same, with and without dopants, but their distributions varied considerably. The 3,4-dimercaptotoluene and dibutylsulfide dopants added individually to n-dodecane interferred with the hydrocarbon oxidation at the alkylperoxy radical and the alkylhydroperoxide link, respectively, while the 2,5-dimethylpyrrole dopant inhibited ROOH formation. Pyridine, pyrrole, and dibenzothiophene added individually showed few significant effects.

Modified reaction mechanism of aerated n-dodecane liquid flowing over heated metal tubes

The degradation mechanism of the n-dodecane was studied using a modified jet fuel thermal oxidation tester containing a sample withdrawal system as a reaction vessel. The reaction products were identified using gas chromatography and mass spectorometry. The soluble products were found to consist mainly of C5-C10 n-alkanes and 1-alkenes, C7-C10 aldehydes, tetrahydrofuran derivatives, dodecanol and dodecanone isomers, dodecyl hydroperoxide (ROOH) decomposition products, and C24 alkane isomers. The data from the experiments agreed with those of Hazlett et al. (1977). It was found that alkyl peroxide radical reactions dominate in the autooxidation temperature regime (at T not above 300 C); the dominant path is for the alkyl peroxyl radical to react bimolecularly with fuel to yield primarily alkyl hydroperoxides. The alkyl peroxide radical also undergoes self-termination and unimolecular isomerization and decomposition reactions, to yield smaller amounts of C12 alcohol plus ketone products and tetrahydrofuran derivatives, respectively.

Quantum chemistry and excited states: First investigations on pyrene-like molecules

Although the calculations are expected to be accurate within 10%, it follows then that there cannot be proposed unquestionable one-to-one attribution due to the density of the DIB's (Diffuse Interstellar Bands). Nevertheless, it has been shown that if one is interested in the experimental study of methyl-pyrene cations, for example, then, the most promising candidate is the 1-methyl isomer: this isomer has been investigated by d'Hendecourt and Leger (1993,1994) and their spectrum shows very striking features in very good agreement with both our calculations and a few DIB's. However, 1-methyl-pyrene cation is not the only product susceptible of being formed in this experiment, and further investigations are in progress to give a complete interpretations of the results. This preliminary report on pyrene-like molecules illustrates the role that theoretical calculations can ply in both the design and the interpretation of experiments.

Identification of Methanotrophic Lipid Biomarkers in Cold-Seep Mussel Gills: Chemical and Isotopic Analysis

A lipid analysis of the tissues of a cold-seep mytilid mussel collected from the Louisiana slope of the Gulf of Mexico was used in conjunction with a compound-specific isotope analysis to demonstrate the presence of methanotrophic symbionts in the mussel gill tissue and to demonstrate the host's dependence on bacterially synthesized metabolic intermediates. The gill tissue contained large amounts of group-specific methanotrophic biomarkers, bacteriohopanoids, 4-methylsterols, lipopolysaccharide-associated hydroxy fatty acids, and type I-specific 16:1 fatty acid isomers with bond positions at delta-8, delta-10, and delta-ll. Only small amounts of these compounds were detected in the mantle or other tissues of the host animal. A variety of cholesterol and 4-methylsterol isomers were identified as both free and steryl esters, and the sterol double bond positions suggested that the major bacterially derived gill sterol(11.0% 4(alpha)-methyl-cholesta-8(14), 24-dien-3(beta)-ol) was converted to host cholesterol (64.2% of the gill sterol was cholest-5-en-3(beta)-ol). The stable carbon isotope values for gill and mantle preparations were, respectively, -59.0 and -60.4 per thousand for total tissue, -60.6 and -62.4 per thousand for total lipids, -60.2 and -63.9 per thousand for phospholipid fatty acids, and -71.8 and -73.8 per thousand for sterols. These stable carbon isotope values revealed that the relative fractionation pattern was similar to the patterns obtained in pure culture experiments with methanotrophic bacteria further supporting the conversion of the bacterial methyl-sterol pool.

Effect of Intracerebroventricularly Administered Octopamines and Synephrines on Angiotensin 2-Induced Water Intake in Rats

Recent studies from this laboratory showed that l-m-synephrine (phenylephrine), a metabolite of l-m-octapamine, inhibited the drinking response of rats to peripherally administered angiotensin 2. The objective of this investigation was to determine whether the isomers ofboth octapamine and synephrine could inhibit angiotensin 2-induced dipsogenesis in the rat. Of the isomers tested, only d,l-m-octopamine and l-m-synephrine blocked the dipsogenic response to administration of angiotensin 2 (200 micrograms/kg, SC). The antidipsogenic effect of both d,l-m-octopamine and l-m-synephrine could be blocked by concurrent administration of yohimbine (300 micrograms/kg, IP), an alpha(sub 2)-adrenoceptor antagonist. The results indicate that m-octopamine and m-synephrine exert their antidipsogenic effect via alpha(sub 2)-adrenoceptors. These studies add to a growing body of data suggesting that activation of alpha(sub 2)-adrenoceptors inhibits, while blockade of these receptors enhances, angiotensin 2-induced drinking.

Molecular Static Third-Order Polarizabilities of Carbon-Cage Fullerenes and their Correlation with Three Geometric Parameters: Group Order, Aromaticity, and Size

Calculations were performed on the valence contribution to the static molecular third-order polarizabilities (gamma) of thirty carbon-cage fullerenes (C60, C70, five isomers of C78, and twenty-three isomers of C84). The molecular structures were obtained from B3LYP/STO-3G calculations. The values of the tensor elements and an associated numerical uncertainty were obtained using the finite-field approach and polynomial expansions of orders four to eighteen of polarization versus static electric field data. The latter information was obtained from semiempirical calculations using the AM1 hamiltonian.
