Battery life test using reconditioning

A discussion is presented on nickel cadmium battery life tests using reconditioning and some comparative tests not using reconditioning. The discussion is aimed at the program application part of the testing. The goals of the program were to get an increased utilization out of the battery system in geosynchronous orbit. An attempt was made to push the depth of discharge operation up around 80 to 85 percent and the intent with the reconditioning program was to extend this type of utilization out towards a 10-year life and attune the voltage regulation.

Battery Cell Voltage Sensing and Balancing Using Addressable Transformers

A document discusses the use of saturating transformers in a matrix arrangement to address individual cells in a high voltage battery. This arrangement is able to monitor and charge individual cells while limiting the complexity of circuitry in the battery. The arrangement has inherent galvanic isolation, low cell leakage currents, and allows a single bad cell in a battery of several hundred cells to be easily spotted.

An Initial Study of Using the 34-M Antenna for Lunar Mission Support

As a part of the long-range planning of future Mars and lunar missions, a feasibility study was made of a 34-m antenna system with differentially pointed multiple beams. The performance loss mechanisms of the differentially pointed multiple-beam systems were identified and quantified. Techniques that can significantly improve the multiple-beam system performance are identified. The goal is to determine the feasibility of using the 34-m antenna to support widely separated elements associated with lunar missions.

The Design and Use of Calorimeters For Characterization of High-Enthalpy Flows in Arc-Heated Test Facilities

High-enthalpy, arc-heated flows used for aerothermal testing present a challenging environment for flow characterization. This paper describes the design and use of cooled dwell probes used for heat-transfer and pressure characterization of the NASA and United States Department of Defense (DoD) arc facilities located at Moffett Field, CA, and Arnold Air Force Base, TN. Dwell calorimeters designed, fabricated, and tested by Thermal Technologies, Inc. (TTI) in the NASA IHF and the USAF H1 and H2 arc test facilities provide heat flux and pressure data with excellent repeatability. These calorimeters use standard Gardon calorimeter gages and pressure ports with unique cooling systems enabling them to withstand the severe arc-heated environments for durations sufficient for acquisition of steady-state data. The TTI probes have proven very robust in the extreme aerothermal environments of these facilities. This paper provides an overview of calorimeter instruments typically used in arc facilities, discusses design features of the TTI dwell probes, presents selected data acquired by the TTI calorimeters, and provides comparisons with data acquired from using measurement techniques.

Recommended Practice for Use of ExB Probes in Electric Propulsion Testing

An ExB probe is an electric propulsion plume diagnostic that has at its core a Wien filter. Ions entering the instrument experience perpendicular electric and magnetic fields and are filtered based on their velocity. While the ExB probe can be used to estimate the ion velocity distribution function, in the electric propulsion community, it is commonly used to measure species fractions. There are numerous probe designs, implementation and operation procedures, and data analysis approaches described and in use across the community. This paper provides recommendations and descriptions of best practices for design, implementation, and data analysis for the ExB probe, with a particular emphasis on Hall and ion thrusters. This work contributes to the broader community goal to standardize the use of diagnostics in electric propulsion testing.
