Latching mechanism Patent

Design, development, and characteristics of latching mechanism for operation in limited access areas

Apollo 14 mission: Failure to achieve docking probe capture latch engagement

Six docking attempts were required in order to successfully achieve capture latch engagement during the transposition and docking phase following translunar injection. After docking, the probe and drogue were examined by the crew. Probe operation appeared normal and radial marks were noted on the drogue. During all subsequent operations, the probe operated properly.

The design and development of a miniature bi-stable latching solenoid valve for low thrust resistojets

The design approach and development demonstration are presented for a flightweight, miniature, magnetic latching shutoff valve, suitable for use with the ruggedized H2 and NH3 resistojet and the biowaste resistojet. The design criteria established provided for compatibility with specified ruggedized resistojet propellants as well as the biowaste and other propulsion system propellants.

Magnetic latching valve

Latching, fast-acting 2-port poppet valve has been developed for use in gas chromatograph - mass spectrometer combinations. Requisites included positive actuation time, few hundredths of a second, and static force holding valve in position at all times.

Very high voltage latching relay

Relay consists of high voltage reed switch actuated by rotating permanent magnet mounted on stepper motor shaft, with actuation assembly isolated from high voltage circuit. Unit can be modified for use as double pole or double pole double throw latching relay and can be used in either air or vacuum.

Dual-action expanded-latch mechanism

Single drive actuator operates novel mechanism that expands, attaches to object, and withdraws to latch object firmly to another part. Packaging is extremely simple and compact, and eliminates need for machined parts or close tolerances.

Hatch latch mechanism for Spacelab scientific airlock

The requirements, design tradeoff, design, and performance of the Spacelab scientific airlock hatch latching mechanisms are described. At space side the hatch is closed and held against internal airlock/module pressure by 12 tangential overcenter hooks driven by a driver. At module side the hatch is held by 4 hooks driven by rollers running on a cammed driver.
