Disruption Prediction and Avoidance in High Beta Long Pulse KSTAR Plasmas

This research is a concentrated and coordinated experimental and physics analysis program by a small U.S. team, focused on the topical area of “Long Pulse Control” as stated in the proposal solicitation. The overall goal of the research is to produce world-class analysis regarding forecasting and avoidance of disruptions in a long-pulse, superconducting tokamak at high stability parameters (e.g. normalized beta) with direct, quantifiable figures of merit (i.e. plasma disruption rate - “disruptivity”) and its reduction based on improved stability physics and control. The research targets the backbone of the problem – the basic, main issues – to produce this quantitative analysis by: (1) Creating and applying a new physics-based paradigm to understand how to eliminate disruptions: disruption event characterization, and event chain analysis – a direct manifestation of the approach suggested in the DOE Transients Report, (2) Ensuring that the components required to produce high-quality measurements and analysis needed for disruption event characterization for the tokamak in question (here, KSTAR) exist (e.g. pressure profile peaking, high-accuracy pitch angle data, compensated low frequency toroidal mode number n = 1 mode measurement) to create a primarily physics-based disruption forecasting capability, and (3) Addressing disruption avoidance for the first time in KSTAR by attacking primary disruption ‘event chains’, utilizing the most important associated plasma measurements (dynamic n = 1 field). The focus of this work will be avoidance of macroscopic instabilities, especially global modes.

MARSAME Radiological Release Report for Diamond Drive Widening and Roundabout Construction Projects

Environmental Protection and Compliance, Environmental Stewardship (EPC-ES) has determined that only a portion of the soil associated with the Diamond Drive Widening/Roundabout Projects (Figure 1) meets the criteria for unrestricted release to the public under Department of Energy (DOE) Order 458.1, Radiation Protection for the Public and the Environment (DOE, 2020). The remaining soil did not meet the criteria for unrestricted release and must be managed appropriately. These conclusions are based on the known history of the area combined with soil sample data collected in 2022; the findings are consistent with DOE Order 458.1 and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Functional Series Document EPC-ES-FSD-004, Environmental Radiation Protection (LANL, 2021). Sampling and data analysis, as described in this report, were sufficient to meet measurement quality objectives (MQOs) under the Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Assessment of Materials and Equipment (MARSAME) manual (NUREG, 2009) and LANL procedures (LANL, 2020). Final approvals for waste disposition will come from LANL’s Waste Management Program.

Bayesian Cloud Property Retrievals from ARM Active and Passive Measurements

The optimum use of the continuous measurements of thermodynamics, radiation, aerosols, clouds and precipitation from the DOE Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program is key to achieve the DOE Atmospheric System Research (ASR)’s objectives. One of the key mission requirements is to retrieve cloud and precipitation properties, as well as vertical motion parameters, along the vertical cross- section defined by the profiling active sensors. Such retrievals are challenging to perform continuously in the entire spectrum of cloud and precipitation conditions due to the large natural microphysical and dynamical variability, the often-limited information content in the measurements, and the lack of proper characterization of measurement quality and uncertainty. Today, the acquisition of new remote and in-situ sensors by the ARM program creates opportunities to address the microphysical retrieval problem by exploiting new, more robust retrieval techniques and integrating various scattered advancements in both sensor techniques and retrieval algorithms. During this project, we constructed a robust Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) cloud property retrieval algorithm that includes a state of the art radar forward model. Our MCMC-based retrieval produces both the best estimate of height-resolved cloud and precipitation properties in the radar profile, as well as an estimate of the in-cloud vertical motion and turbulence. In addition, the MCMC algorithm automatically produces robust and flexible estimates of retrieval uncertainty. We tested the algorithm on several synthetic cloud profiles obtained from large eddy simulation (LES) models with bin-resolved microphysics.

Completion document for MRT 8824 - Upgrade NIF’s gaseous radiochemistry diagnostics (RAGS) to support weapons science

This milestone highlights the successful upgrade and deployment of the Radiochemical Analysis of Gaseous Samples (RAGS) system, which delivers high-quality measurements (<20% uncertainty) of activated gaseous species from NIF implosions. These measurements are critical for supporting Stockpile Stewardship Program (SSP) relevant platforms, including LANL’s Double Shell and LLNL’s Pushered Single Shell campaigns. The RAGS diagnostic technique enables analysis of short-range mixing in implosions using high-Z shells, which are otherwise inaccessible to conventional x-ray diagnostic methods. By facilitating the investigation of high-Z material mixing into fusion burn, this system provides essential data for quantifying and interpreting results in high-energy density (HED) experiments. This report details the physics motivation, diagnostic fundamentals, planned and enacted upgrade work, and the quantification of uncertainty for the upgraded system.
