Laser Speckle Pattern Stability in Hypersonic Regimes for Experimental Mechanics and Metrological Studies

Here, an empirical study assessing the suitability of laser speckle patterns for use in experimental mechanics research conducted at hypersonic conditions is presented. Speckle patterns generated via coherent optical scattering from a gold-coated graphite surface inserted into a Mach 10 air stream were collected and analyzed using Computer-Aided Speckle Interferometry using two methodologies: a typical spanwise approach involving increasing temporal span between image pairs, and a sequential approach that utilizes a combination of temporal re-referencing and spatial resampling. Results were characterized for spatial-temporal stability and variance. Our observations demonstrate that optical methods relying on stable and properly formed speckle patterns can be used in a hypersonic regime at various Reynolds numbers and common camera frame rates, but the technique is sensitive to the conditions of the airflow and the processing methodology chosen.

Hybrid manufacturing by additive friction stir deposition, metrology, CNC machining, and microstructure analysis

Aerospace flight panels must provide high strength with low mass. For aluminum panels, it is common practice to begin with a wrought plate and remove the majority of the material to attain the desired structure, comprising a thinner plate with the desired pattern of reinforcement ribs. As an alternative, this study implements hybrid manufacturing, where aluminum is first deposited on a baseplate only at the rib locations using additive friction stir deposition (AFSD). Structured light scanning is then used to measure the printed geometry. This geometry is finally used as the stock model for computer numerical control (CNC) machining. This paper details the hybrid manufacturing process that consists of: AFSD to print the preform, structured light scanning to generate the stock model and tool path, three-axis CNC machining, and post-process measurements for part geometry and microstructure.

Cutting force and stability for inserted cutters using structured light metrology

This paper describes force and stability prediction for inserted end and face mills using a reverse engineering approach. Structured light scanning is used to identify the spatial coordinates of the points that define the multiple insert cutting edges. These points are used to extract the cutting edge radius and angle and are then incorporated in a time domain simulation that predicts cutting force and tool/workpiece deflection for user-selected operating parameters. Good agreement between predicted and measured cutting forces is demonstrated. The process stability is then predicted using the validated force model and measured structural dynamics.

Structured illumination with thermal imaging (SI-TI): A dynamically reconfigurable metrology for parallelized thermal transport characterization

The recent push for the “materials by design” paradigm requires synergistic integration of scalable computation, synthesis, and characterization. Among these, techniques for efficient measurement of thermal transport can be a bottleneck limiting the experimental database size, especially for diverse materials with a range of roughness, porosity, and anisotropy. Traditional contact thermal measurements have challenges with throughput and the lack of spatially resolvable property mapping, while non-contact pump-probe laser methods generally need mirror smooth sample surfaces and also require serial raster scanning to achieve property mapping. Here, we present structured illumination with thermal imaging (SI-TI), a new thermal characterization tool based on parallelized all-optical heating and thermometry. Experiments on representative dense and porous bulk materials as well as a 3D printed thermoelectric thick film (~50 μm) demonstrate that SI-TI (1) enables paralleled measurement of multiple regions and samples without raster scanning; (2) can dynamically adjust the heating pattern purely in software, to optimize the measurement sensitivity in different directions for anisotropic materials; and (3) can tolerate rough (~3 μm) and scratched sample surfaces. Here, this work highlights a new avenue in adaptivity and throughput for thermal characterization of diverse materials.

Analysis of two-color photoelectron spectroscopy for attosecond metrology at seeded free-electron lasers

The generation of attosecond pulse trains at free-electron lasers opens new opportunities in ultrafast science, as it gives access, for the first time, to reproducible, programmable, extreme ultraviolet (XUV) waveforms with high intensity. In this work, we present a detailed analysis of the theoretical model underlying the temporal characterization of the attosecond pulse trains recently generated at the free-electron laser FERMI. In particular, the validity of the approximations used for the correlated analysis of the photoelectron spectra generated in the two-color photoionization experiments are thoroughly discussed. The ranges of validity of the assumptions, in connection with the main experimental parameters, are derived.

Quantum Metrology of Noisy Spreading Channels

We provide the optimal measurement strategy for a class of noisy channels that reduce to the identity channel for a specific value of a parameter (spreading channels). We provide an example that is physically relevant: the estimation of the absolute value of the displacement in the presence of phase randomizing noise. Surprisingly, this noise does not affect the effectiveness of the optimal measurement. We show that, for small displacement, a squeezed vacuum probe field is optimal among strategies with same average energy. A squeezer followed by photodetection is the optimal detection strategy that attains the quantum Fisher information, whereas the customarily used homodyne detection becomes useless in the limit of small displacements, due to the same effect that gives Rayleigh’s curse in optical superresolution. There is a quantum advantage: a squeezed or a Fock state with N average photons allow to asymptotically estimate the parameter with a N better precision than classical states with same energy.

Ultraviolet Fluorescence Imaging for Photovoltaic Module Metrology: Best Practices and Survey of Features Observed in Fielded Modules

As the photovoltaics (PV) industry grows in sophistication, so must the extent to which systems are characterized. UV Fluorescence (UVF) imaging is a valuable, easy-to-perform, high-throughput, nonintrusive technique for characterizing modules in the field and in the lab. However, UVF is still a relatively new technique, and many in the PV industry are still unaware of its potential. We provide a guideline for obtaining, processing, and interpreting UVF images. We have provided a list of considerations for imaging hardware and settings, a suggested pipeline for image processing, and details on a survey of features shown in UVF images. As a result, a new database with UVF images of 7190 modules and another database curated by BrightSpot Automation are publicly available.

Applied Metrology for the Assembly of the Nb 3 Sn MQXFA Quadrupole Magnets for the HL-LHC AUP

The US HL-LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project (AUP) is building Nb 3 Sn quadrupole magnets, called MQXFA, with plans to install 16 of them in the HL-LHC Interaction Regions. Variability in coil size must be dealt with at the assembly level, which requires timely and repeatable measurement of each coil. In this paper we will present the methodology used for coil measurements and the geometrical size data for the coils that have been measured thus far. We will also show the coil measurements of 8 coils before and after cold test. In conclusion, the Leica AT960-MR laser tracker with Spatial Analyzer software acquired to achieve these measurements has been used elsewhere in the project to great effect.
