Mutual Inductance Level Sensor for Use in Liquid Metals

Electromagnetic instrumentation capable of measuring the level of liquid metal has been developed at Argonne National Laboratory’s (ANL) Mechanisms Engineering Test Loop (METL). The mutual inductance level sensor (MILS) utilizes the electromagnetic coupling between two coil conductors and a surrounding liquid metal to determine the level of the liquid metal. Mineral insulated cables wrapped on a stainless steel core provide a durable sensor construction. The use of a sealed stainless steel thimble isolates the sensor from the high-temperature liquid metal, allowing for easy sensor maintenance. Modern digital electronics allow for reliable and accurate operation of the sensor. Two sensor variations have been designed and fabricated, and the first variation has seen extensive testing in a non-sodium testing stand as well as in the high-temperature sodium environment of METL. Electromagnetic finite-element analysis studies have been performed using the COMSOL Magnetic Fields Solver. Regular operation of the MILS will commence following in-situ calibration of the sensors in the METL environment.

Multi-probe meeting with Harwell II: A discussion of potential areas of cooperation for mutual benefit by the LANL Multi-probe Radiography team [Slides]

In this presentation, we continue a discussion begun in September 2023, with staff from the University of Manchester and the Central Laser Facility-Harwell in the UK exploring the possibilities for cooperative work of mutual interest in the technology underpinning petawatt laser driven Multi-Probe radiography. Since the September Seminar, the US and UK staff have exchanged lists of ideas for possible cooperation and this presentation comprises brief descriptions of five topics that LANL staff would offer for consideration in the area of laser driven radiation sources, applications of machine learning and experiments at Omega (in the US) and Gemini (in the UK).

Reconstructing the Universe: Testing the Mutual Consistency of the Pantheon and SDSS/eBOSS BAO Data Sets with Gaussian Processes

We test the mutual consistency between the baryon acoustic oscillation measurements from the eBOSS SDSS final release and the Pantheon supernova compilation in a model-independent fashion using Gaussian process regression. We also test their joint consistency with the ΛCDM model in a model-independent fashion. We also use Gaussian process regression to reconstruct the expansion history that is preferred by these two data sets. While this methodology finds no significant preference for model flexibility beyond ΛCDM, we are able to generate a number of reconstructed expansion histories that fit the data better than the best-fit ΛCDM model. These example expansion histories may point the way toward modifications to ΛCDM. We also constrain the parameters Ω{sub k} and H {sub 0} r {sub d} both with ΛCDM and with Gaussian process regression. We find that H {sub 0} r {sub d} = 10,030 ± 130 km s{sup −1} and Ω{sub k} = 0.05 ± 0.10 for ΛCDM and that H {sub 0} r {sub d} = 10,040 ± 140 km s{sup −1} and Ω{sub k} = 0.02 ± 0.20 for the Gaussian process case.
