Preliminary radar systems analysis for Venus orbiter missions

A short, preliminary analysis is presented of the problems involved in mapping the surface of Venus with radar from an orbiting spacecraft. Two types of radar, the noncoherent sidelooking and the focused synthetic aperture systems, are sized to fulfill two assumed levels of Venus exploration. The two exploration levels, regional and local, assumed for this study are based on previous Astro Sciences work (Klopp 1969). The regional level is defined as 1 to 3 kilometer spatial and 0.5 to 1 km vertical resolution of 100 percent 0 of the planet's surface. The local level is defined as 100 to 200 meter spatial and 50-10 m vertical resolution of about 100 percent of the surfAce (based on the regional survey). A 10cm operating frequency was chosen for both radar systems in order to minimize the antenna size and maximize the apparent radar cross section of the surface.

SCO X-1: Origin of the radio and hard X-ray emissions

The consequences of models for the central radio source and the hard X-ray ( 30 keV) emitting region in Sco X-1 are examined. It was found that the radio emission could result from noncoherent synchrotron radiation and that the X-rays may be produced by bremsstrahlung. It is shown that both mechanisms require a mass outflow from Sco X-1. The radio source is located at r approximately 3x10 to the 12th power cm from the center of the star, and its linear dimensions do not exceed 3x10 to the 13th power cm. The magnetic field in the radio source is on the order of 1 gauss. If the hard X-rays are produced by thermal bremsstrahlung, their source is located at 10 to the 9th power approximately r approximately 5x10 to the 9th power cm, the temperature is 2x10 to the 9th power K, and the emission measure is 2x10 to the 56th power/cu cm. This hot plasma loses energy inward by conduction and outward by supersonic expansion. The rates of energy loss for both processes are about 10 to the 36th power erg/s, comparable to the total luminosity of Sco X-1.

Backscattering from a two-scale rough surface with application to radar sea return

A two-scale composite surface scattering theory was developed without using the noncoherent assumption. The surface is assumed electrically homogeneous and finitely conducting; the surface roughness may be nonuniform geometrically. The special forms of the terms for excluding the non-coherent assumption and the meanings of these terms are discussed. To gain insight into the mechanisms of backscattering, the results are compared with those obtained by previous theories. The comparison with NRL data shows satisfactory agreement for both horizontal and vertical polarization, especially for incident angles larger than 30 deg. For smaller incident angles, NASA/JSC data have been chosen for comparison and close agreement is again observed.

Optical communication system performance with tracking error induced signal fading.

System performance is determined for an optical communication system using noncoherent detection in the presence of tracking error induced signal fading assuming (1) binary on-off modulation (OOK) with both fixed and adaptive threshold receivers, and (2) binary polarization modulation (BPM). BPM is shown to maintain its inherent 2- to 3-dB advantage over OOK when adaptive thresholding is used, and to have a substantially greater advantage when the OOK system is restricted to a fixed decision threshold.

Toward RADSCAT measurements over the sea and their interpretation

Investigations into several areas which are essential to the execution and interpretation of suborbital observations by composite radiometer - scatterometer sensor (RADSCAT) are reported. Experiments and theory were developed to demonstrate the remote anemometric capability of the sensor over the sea through various weather conditions. It is shown that weather situations found in extra tropical cyclones are useful for demonstrating the all weather capability of the composite sensor. The large scale fluctuations of the wind over the sea dictate the observational coverage required to correlate measurements with the mean surface wind speed. Various theoretical investigations were performed to establish a premise for the joint interpretation of the experiment data. The effects of clouds and rains on downward radiometric observations over the sea were computed. A method of predicting atmospheric attenuation from joint observations is developed. In other theoretical efforts, the emission and scattering characteristics of the sea were derived. Composite surface theories with coherent and noncoherent assumptions were employed.

Low data rate digital space communications

The low available transmitter power and the large frequency uncertainty constrain the data rate to be low. An all-digital communication receiver is proposed, and its feasibility is established. Although coherent systems should be used whenever practical, the noncoherent MFSK system is more suitable for very low data rates. The effect of Rician fading on the performance of MFSK receiver is studied. Fading characteristics of the Venus channel are examined based on the exponential model and available experimental data on the Venus atmosphere. Because of the requirement of high communication efficiency, three codes are evaluated and compared. The rapidly varying phase error at low data rate has great effects on the tracking loop behaviors which are examined by extensive computer study of the phase plane trajectories.

Telecommunication systems engineering

Telecommunication network concepts are discussed together with carrier-tracking loops employing the phase-lock principle, phase and Doppler measurements in two-way phase-coherent tracking systems, range measurements by phase-coherent techniques, and questions of phase-coherent detection with perfect reference signals and with noisy reference signals. The design of one-way and two-way phase-coherent communication systems is considered, giving attention to the optimal design of single-channel systems, the design of two-channel systems, and the design of multichannel systems. Other topics explored include the design and the performance of phase-coherent systems preceded by band-pass limiters, symbol synchronization and its effects on data detection, noncoherent communication over the Gaussian channel, and tracking loops with improved performance.

Simulation results for an innovative anti-multipath digital receiver

Simulation results are presented for the error rate performance of the recursive digital MAP detector for known M-ary signals in multiplicative and additive Gaussian noise. Plots of detection error rate versus additive signal to noise ratio are given, with multipath interference strength as a parameter. For comparison, the error rates of conventional coherent and noncoherent digital MAP detectors are simultaneously simulated and graphed. It is shown that with nonzero multiplicative noise, the error rates of the conventional detectors saturate at an irreducible level as additive signal to noise ratio increases. The error rate for the innovative detector continues to decrease rapidly with increasing additive signal to noise ratio. In the absence of multiplicative interference, the conventional coherent detector and the innovative detector are shown to exhibit identical performance.-

Scorpius X-1 - Origin of the radio and hard X-ray emissions

The consequences of models for the central radio source and the hard X-ray emitting region in Sco X-1 are examined. The radio emission could result from noncoherent synchrotron radiation, and the X-rays may be produced by bremsstrahlung. It is shown that both these mechanisms require a mass outflow from Sci X-1. The radio source is located at about 30 million km from the center of the star, and its linear dimensions do not exceed 300 million km. The magnetic field in the radio source is on the order of 1 gauss. If the hard X-rays are produced by thermal bremsstrahlung, their source is located between 10,000 and 50,000 km from the center of the star, the temperature is 2 billion K, and the emission measure is 2 times 10 to the 56th power per cu cm. This hot plasma loses energy inward by conduction and outward by supersonic expansion. The rates of energy loss for both of these processes are about 10 to the 36th ergs per sec, comparable to the total luminosity of Sco X-1.

Coding/modulation trade-offs for Shuttle wideband data links

This paper describes various modulation and coding schemes which are potentially applicable to the Shuttle wideband data relay communications link. This link will be capable of accommodating up to 50 Mbps of scientific data and will be subject to a power constraint which forces the use of channel coding. Although convolutionally encoded coherent binary PSK is the tentative signal design choice for the wideband data relay link, FM techniques are of interest because of the associated hardware simplicity and because an FM system is already planned to be available for transmission of television via relay satellite to the ground. Binary and M-ary FSK are considered as candidate modulation techniques, and both coherent and noncoherent ground station detection schemes are examined. The potential use of convolutional coding is considered in conjunction with each of the candidate modulation techniques.

Capacity degradation due to interleaving and multiplexing

The capacity of an M-ary channel with N-ary coding is computed. It is found that the capacity of a very noisy channel is reduced by the factor (N-1)(log M)/(M-1)(log N). The results are applied to channels with noncoherent multifrequency shift keying and to concatenation of codes and interleaving.

A new real-time non-coherent to coherent light image converter - The hybrid field effect liquid crystal light valve

A new, high-performance device has been developed for application to real-time coherent optical data processing. The new device embodies a CdS photoconductor, a CdTe light-absorbing layer, a dielectric mirror, and a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between indium-tin-oxide transparent electrodes deposited on optical quality glass flats. The noncoherent image is directed onto the photoconductor; this reduces the impedance of the photoconductor, thereby switching the ac voltage that is impressed across the electrodes onto the liquid crystal to activate the device. The liquid crystal is operated in a hybrid field effect mode. It utilizes the twisted nematic effect to create a dark off-state and the optical birefringence effect to create the bright on-state. The liquid crystal modulates the polarization of the coherent read-out light so an analyzer must be used to create an intensity modulated output beam.

Study to investigate and evaluate means of optimizing the radar function

The investigations for a rendezvous radar system design and an integrated radar/communication system design are presented. Based on these investigations, system block diagrams are given and system parameters are optimized for the noncoherent pulse and coherent pulse Doppler radar modulation types. Both cooperative (transponder) and passive radar operation are examined including the optimization of the corresponding transponder design for the cooperative mode of operation.
