LANDSAT-D flight segment operations manual, volume 1

Hardware, systems, and subsystems for the multimission modular spacecraft used for LANDSAT 4 are described and depicted in block diagrams and schematics. Components discussed include the modular attitude control system; the communication and data handling subsystem; the narrowband tape recorder; the on-board computer; the propulsion module subsystem; the signal conditioning and control unit; the modular power subsystem; the solar array drive and power transmission assembly; the power distribution unit; the digital processing unit; and the wideband communication subsystem.

The Nimbus 4 infrared spectroscopy experiment. I - Calibrated thermal emission spectra.

Measurement of the infrared spectrum of the earth and atmosphere between 400 and 1600/cm. In an effort to obtain spectra with high absolute accuracy, it was necessary to incorporate many factors into the calibration, including small departures from unity in the emissivity of the on-board calibration source, imbalance between cold and warm calibration ports, and effects due to orbital variations in instrument temperature. The inclusion of such higher order corrections, along with careful data screening processes, has ensured a high quality data set that can be used in a variety of geophysical and meteorological investigations. Representative samples of data are presented that illustrate the behavior of the thermal emission spectra under a variety of conditions encountered in a typical orbit, including extremes in temperature, surface reststrahlung (or residual ray) effects, and various types of cloud conditions.

Modular on-board adaptive imaging

Feature extraction involves the transformation of a raw video image to a more compact representation of the scene in which relevant information about objects of interest is retained. The task of the low-level processor is to extract object outlines and pass the data to the high-level process in a format that facilitates pattern recognition tasks. Due to the immense computational load caused by processing a 256x256 image, even a fast minicomputer requires a few seconds to complete this low-level processing. It is, therefore, necessary to consider hardware implementation of these low-level functions to achieve real-time processing speeds. The considered project had the objective to implement a system in which the continuous feature extraction process is not affected by the dynamic changes in the scene, varying lighting conditions, or object motion relative to the cameras. Due to the high bandwidth (3.5 MHz) and serial nature of the TV data, a pipeline processing scheme was adopted as the overall architecture of this system. Modularity in the system is achieved by designing circuits that are generic within the overall system.

Digital computer modeling of the process of reduction of redundancy in multichannel telemetry information by the method of adaptive discretization with associative sorting

Digital computer modeling of the process of adaptive discretization with associative sorting of actual multichannel telemetry information is discussed. The main task in modeling is production of initial data for determination of dependences describing the operation of the on-board information compression device. Conclusions are presented including the shortcomings of telemetric information used in modeling.

On-board optical navigation data from Mariner '71.'

Satellite-star optical navigation, a new spacecraft navigation technique has been successfully demonstrated during Mariner 9's approach to Mars in mid-November. As Mariner 9 approached Mars, 21 TV pictures of its satellites, Phobos and Deimos, were taken and transmitted to earth. On earth, these pictures were carefully processed in order to locate the positions of the bright satellites against the relatively faint star background. The objectives and performance of the preflight and real time activities leading to the successful demonstration of satellite-star navigation data are described.

Application of Statistical Filter Theory to the Optimal Estimation of Position and Velocity on Board a Circumlunar Vehicle

Statistical filter theory is employed to develop a method for determining the best possible estimate of the position and velocity of a space vehicle in the midcourse phase of flight. Results of a computer simulation are given to illustrate the performance attainable. An on-board system is visualized in which the source of information is an arbitrary sequence of observations of space angles, corrupted by measurement errors. The scheme is in effect a dynamical time-varying filter, implemented by a digital computer, which processes the incoming data to compute an up-to-date optimal estimate of position and velocity.

On-board radiometric preprocessing for multispectral linear arrays /MLA/

A program that was undertaken to design, fabricate, and test a real-time hardwired data preprocessor is described, which applies a calibration normalization to each detector in a 576-element linear photodiode array. Various calibration problems were uncovered, such as those (1) due to system noise in recording the calibration tables, or (2) due to thermal drift and (3) due to the original quantization process. It was determined that in this experiment, noise and thermal drift led to fixed errors in the normalization of responses on the order of + or - 10 counts, out of 255 counts for many of the detectors.

Baseband-processed SS-TDMA communication system architecture and design concepts

The architecture and system design for a commercial satellite communications system planned for the 1990's was developed by Motorola for NASA's Lewis Research Center. The system provides data communications between individual users via trunking and customer premises service terminals utilizing a central switching satellite operating in a time-division multiple-access (TDMA) mode. The major elements of the design incorporating baseband processing include: demand-assigned multiple access reservation protocol, spectral utilization, system synchronization, modulation technique and forward error control implementation. Motorola's baseband processor design, which is being proven in a proof-of-concept advanced technology development, will perform data regeneration and message routing for individual users on-board the spacecraft.

On-board landmark navigation and attitude reference parallel processor system

An approach to autonomous navigation and attitude reference for earth observing spacecraft is described along with the landmark identification technique based on a sequential similarity detection algorithm (SSDA). Laboratory experiments undertaken to determine if better than one pixel accuracy in registration can be achieved consistent with onboard processor timing and capacity constraints are included. The SSDA is implemented using a multi-microprocessor system including synchronization logic and chip library. The data is processed in parallel stages, effectively reducing the time to match the small known image within a larger image as seen by the onboard image system. Shared memory is incorporated in the system to help communicate intermediate results among microprocessors. The functions include finding mean values and summation of absolute differences over the image search area. The hardware is a low power, compact unit suitable to onboard application with the flexibility to provide for different parameters depending upon the environment.

Addressing the crush of sampling

An overall space information system involves sensing, processing, analyzing, and distributing space-acquired information. These systems may be partitioned into the spacecraft segment, the wideband space-to-ground communication segment, and the ground-based data analysis and distribution segment. The paper discusses NASA's advanced technology programs aimed at providing improved sensors and on-board data systems. Advances in charge-transfer devices, lasers, and microwave technologies will be responsible for major improvements in NASA's sensing and detection capabilities for future missions. These improvements will result in a future data crush that will amplify the data management problem.

Science objectives and the Mariner Jupiter/Saturn 1977 mission design

The two Mariner spacecraft to be launched in 1977 to fly by Jupiter and Saturn require a mission design which is heavily dependent on science objectives. These science objectives translate into trajectory requirements imposed by one or more of the eleven instruments aboard Mariner such as distance of closest approach, inclination, occultation, lighting, etc., at the bodies of interest. Also, Jupiter and Saturn cannot be considered as individual targets but as miniature solar systems, where the mission design must apply to the Jovian and Saturnian satellites, and to Saturn's rings. The major objective of this analysis is to translate the science desires into the mission possibilities. Each object, be it a Galilean satellite, Titan, or the ring of Saturn, provides a unique region suitable for scientific investigation for the on-board instruments. Some of these trajectory regions overlap, others do not. Thus, critical choices must be made in selecting the trajectories to be flown by the two Mariner spacecraft. Such a choice, though preliminary, has been made by the Mariner Jupiter/Saturn 1977 (MJS'77) science teams, and a brief discussion of the selection process and the pair of trajectories chosen is presented in this paper.

Application of square-root filtering for spacecraft attitude control

Suitable digital algorithms are developed and tested for providing on-board precision attitude estimation and pointing control for potential use in the Landsat-D spacecraft. These algorithms provide pointing accuracy of better than 0.01 deg. To obtain necessary precision with efficient software, a six state-variable square-root Kalman filter combines two star tracker measurements to update attitude estimates obtained from processing three gyro outputs. The validity of the estimation and control algorithms are established, and the sensitivity of their performance to various error sources and software parameters are investigated by detailed digital simulation. Spacecraft computer memory, cycle time, and accuracy requirements are estimated.

Innovations in Medicine

NASA is planning now toward the day of long-duration flight-manned interplanetary missions for example-wherein routine health care and emergency treatment must be accomplished on-board the spacecraft over periods of months or perhaps even years. Since spacecraft design limits crew size, the medical assignment may be handled by a single astronaut-physician or by a crew member trained as a physician's assistant. In a space emergency demanding surgery, for instance, sophisticated communications equipment, backed by a computerized data processing system, would make it possible for a surgeon on Earth to "examine" the patient. He could study X-rays and other data, specify an in-flight surgical procedure, and guide the astronaut-medic step-by-step through the operation. Such a system is being evaluated now. It is called STARPAHC (Space Technology Applied to Rural Papago Health Care). NASA technology in space communications and data processing is being applied to remote health services for the Papago tribe. STARPAHC is administered by the NASA Life Sciences Directorate in the Office of Space Sciences. It is a joint program involving NASA's Johnson Space Center, the Indian Health Service of the Department of Health, Education & Welfare, and the Papago's Executive Health Council. Lockheed Missiles & Space Co. is NASA's systems support contractor.

On-board computers for control

On-board computers for control and sequencing from Apollo to Voyager are described along with future trends and recent design examples. Consideration is given to a high-order language for the Space Shuttle program. Emphasis is placed on the usage of modern LSI and new distributed architectural approaches. The distributed computer of the Galileo spacecraft and the data processing system for the Shuttle Orbiter are outlined.

Flight data processing with the F-8 adaptive algorithm

An explicit adaptive control algorithm based on maximum likelihood estimation of parameters has been designed for NASA's DFBW F-8 aircraft. To avoid iterative calculations, the algorithm uses parallel channels of Kalman filters operating at fixed locations in parameter space. This algorithm has been implemented in NASA/DFRC's Remotely Augmented Vehicle (RAV) facility. Real-time sensor outputs (rate gyro, accelerometer and surface position) are telemetered to a ground computer which sends new gain values to an on-board system. Ground test data and flight records were used to establish design values of noise statistics and to verify the ground-based adaptive software. A study of autonomous satellite navigation methods using the global positioning satellite system

Special orbit determination algorithms were developed to accommodate the size and speed limitations of on-board computer systems of the NAVSTAR Global Positioning System. The algorithms use square root sequential filtering methods. A new method for the time update of the square root covariance matrix was also developed. In addition, the time update method was compared with another square root convariance propagation method to determine relative performance characteristics. Comparisions were based on the results of computer simulations of the LANDSAT-D satellite processing pseudo range and pseudo range-rate measurements from the phase one GPS. A summary of the comparison results is presented.

Orbit determination for a Jupiter orbiter tour of the Galilean satellites

Current NASA planning envisions an ambitious Jupiter tour mission which will arrive at the planet in the year, 1984. The objectives of this mission are to broaden our knowledge of the outer solar system and in particular to extend our understanding of the physical processes at work in the Jupiter and Galilean satellite environment. To achieve these goals, precise spacecraft navigation is a fundamental requirement inasmuch as very near encounters with the satellites are necessary both for the planned scientific investigations and to reduce fuel requirements necessary for orbital insertion about the planet. This paper, deals with problems of producing precise spacecraft state estimates relative to the Galilean satellites, with the aid of both earth-based radio and on-board video data.

Feasibility investigation of integrated optics Fourier transform devices

The possibility of producing an integrated optics data processing device based upon Fourier transformations or other parallel processing techniques, and the ways in which such techniques may be used to upgrade the performance of present and projected NASA systems were investigated. Activities toward this goal include; (1) production of near-diffraction-limited geodesic lenses in glass waveguides; (2) development of grinding and polishing techniques for the production of geodesic lenses in LiNbO3 waveguides; (3) development of a characterization technique for waveguide lenses; and (4) development of a theory for corrected aspheric geodesic lenses. A holographic subtraction system was devised which should be capable of rapid on-board preprocessing of a large number of parallel data channels. The principle involved is validated in three demonstrations.
