Overlapping emission peaks in the solar C I multiplets at lambda 1560 and lambda 1657

Observations of the C I multiplets at 1560 and 1657 A made with the University of Colorado spectrometer on the OSO 8 satellite are presented and compared with computed profiles for the Vernazza-Avrett-Loeser solar atmosphere. These are optically thick emission lines formed in the solar chromosphere that show the central reversals typical of such lines. In each multiplet there is an interesting case of overlapping emission peaks which shows that such peaks do not constructively combine but instead weaken. This behavior is easily understood and reproduced with an optically thick, non-LTE mode of formation for these lines and is not consistent with an optically thin mechanism. We also find that the shapes of these blends are very sensitive to the magnitude of the nonthermal microvelocities.

The simultaneous inference of stratospheric trace gases with overlapping spectral signatures using limb sounding radiometry

An inversion algorithm has been developed to simultaneously infer the concentrations of two gases with overlapping spectral signatures using limb emission measurements. The algorithm is efficient and provides a solution in two or three iterations. It has been applied in a simulation study to the inference of stratospheric NO2-H2O and HNO3-CF2Cl2. Existing satellite instrumentation was the basis for errors used in the calculations. It is estimated that concentrations of all four gases can be determined with errors of about 20 percent. This assumes an estimated 1980 CF2Cl2 level. Also, other error sources due to contaminant gas, aerosol emission, and the temperature profile must be included to obtain a better estimate of experimental accuracies.

On the overlapping plate method in astrometry

A method is proposed for the simplification of the algorithms of Eichhorn and Russell (1976) for obtaining the solutions of astrometric problems using the overlapping plate method. The method provides the parameter vector (consisting of 'star constants' and plate constants) as well as the covariance matrix of the parameters. A considerable reduction in the amount of matrix algebra required is obtained with the present method.

Wiener filtering of successive overlapping sections of an X-ray reconstruction

In this paper, a technique is developed to improve the image quality of an object in three-dimensional reconstruction by a weighted average of successive overlapping two-dimensional sections of the object. It is demonstrated that the signal-to-noise ratio of a two-dimensional picture can be improved by roughly a factor of 2 for typical X-ray beam shapes.

The resonance overlap criterion and the onset of stochastic behavior in the restricted three-body problem

The resonance overlap criterion for the onset of stochastic behavior is applied to the planar circular-restricted three-body problem with small mass ratio (mu). Its predictions for mu = 0.001, 0.0001, and 0.00001 are compared to the transitions observed in the numerically determined Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy and found to be in remarkably good agreement. In addition, an approximate scaling law for the onset of stochastic behavior is derived.

Performance of quadrature overlapped raised-cosine modulation over nonlinear satellite channels

This paper considers the performance evaluation of Staggered Quadrature Overlapped Raised Cosine (SQORC) signal transmission through wideband nonlinear satellite channels in the presence of uplink and downlink additive Gaussian noise. Expressions for the bit error rate are derived for a general transponder model with AM-AM and AM-PM conversion. It is shown that the bit error rate of SQORC is one-half of the sum of the bit error rate of MSK at 2/3 of the uplink signal-to-noise ratio and the bit error rate of Quadriphase Phase-Shift Keying QPSK at 4/3 of the uplink signal-to-noise ratio, whereas the spectrum of SQROC is the product of MSK and QPSK spectra. Numerical results are presented for a transponder which is modelled as a hard limiter.

Interface procedures for overlapping grids

The solution of partial differential equations by means of either implicit or conservative explicit finite-difference methods, on the one hand, or multicomponent overlapping grid schemes on the other, is presently subjected to interpolation at grid boundaries in an attempt to eliminate the time lag. The accuracy of the transient solution of a hyperbolic or parabolic partial differential equation is dependent on the procedures used to transfer information between grids in a composite grid system. The present techniques reduce numerical solution errors.

An automatic frequency control loop using overlapping DFTs (Discrete Fourier Transforms)

An automatic frequency control (AFC) loop is introduced and analyzed in detail. The new scheme is a generalization of the well known Cross Product AFC loop that uses running overlapping discrete Fourier transforms (DFTs) to create a discriminator curve. Linear analysis is included and supported with computer simulations. The algorithm is tested in a low carrier to noise ratio (CNR) dynamic environment, and the probability of loss of lock is estimated via computer simulations. The algorithm discussed is a suboptimum tracking scheme with a larger frequency error variance compared to an optimum strategy, but offers simplicity of implementation and a very low operating threshold CNR. This technique can be applied during the carrier acquisition and re-acquisition process in the Advanced Receiver.

A multigrid and upwind viscous flow solver on 3-D embedded and overlapped grids

A numerically efficient method is presented for solving the three-dimensional governing equations of the viscous compressible flow about complex configurations with topologically different components. The physical domain is decomposed into regions for which the grid generation is relatively simple and virtually with no significant restrictions. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved by an implicit, approximately factored, upwind, finite-volume scheme. The block inversions and the diagonalized scalar inversions of the coefficient matrices are modified to allow the holes created in the computational domain by the embedded and overlapped grids. The convergence is accelerated by a multigrid algorithm despite the existence of such holes. The solution for s supersonic flow past a blunt-nose-cylinder at high angle-of-attack is obtained using a C-O grid embedded in a global Cartesian grid.

A spiral galaxy at z = 0.366 which overlaps the image of the quasar 4C 39.47

Direct CCD images in broad-band R and I were obtained of the radio quasar 1632+391 (4C 39.46). A faint galaxy which overlaps the quasar's image was identified. The galaxy is centered 4.2 arcsecs east of the quasar, corresponding to 28 kpc at the galaxy's redshift. It is found that the galaxy is a disk-dominated late-type spiral with an absolute B magnitue of -21.6. Low-dispersion spectroscopy yielded a redshift of 0.3662 for the galaxy based on Ca II, H, and K absorption and weak forbidden line O II 3727 emission. It is suggested that appreciable interstellar gas is present in the galaxy.

Optical studies of hydrogen above 200 gigapascals - Evidence for metallization by band overlap

Direct optical observations of solid hydrogen to pressures in the 250-gigapascal range at 77 K are reported. Hydrogen samples appear nearly opaque at the maximum pressures. Measurements of absorption and Raman spectra provide evidence that electronic excitations in the visible region begin at about 200 gigapascals. The optical data are consistent with a band-overlap mechanism of metallization.

Dynamic-overlapped-grid simulation of aerodynamically determined relative motion

Currently, there is a need to develop a means of analyzing and studying unsteady flowfields which involve multiple component configurations with at least one of the components in relative motion with respect to the others. Two of the important phenomena that such analyses can help to understand are the unsteady aerodynamic interference and the boundary-induced component of the flowfield. With this motivation, a computational method is developed which couples the governing equations of the unsteady flowfield and the rigid-body dynamics in six degrees-of-freedom. These equations are solved on composite meshes of overlapped subdomain grids which can move with respect to each other. Initially, several measures that reduce the numerical error are studied and compared with the exact solution of a moving normal shock in a tube. It is concluded that a second-order accurate method, for spatial and temporal discretizations as well as for the moving subdomain interpolations, is needed as a minimum measure. Furthermore, the CFL numbers should be restricted to unity. Then, the method is used to simulate the flowfield history and predict the aerodynamically determined trajectory of a store dropped from its initial position under a wing.

The overlapping plates method applied to CCD observations of 243 Ida

The overlapping plates method has been applied to crossing-point Charge Coupled Device (CCD) observations of minor planet 243 Ida to produce absolute position measurements precise to better than 0.1 sec and differential position measurements precise to better than 0.06 sec. Although these observations numbered only 17 out of the 520 that produced the final ground-based Ida ephemeris for the Galileo spacecraft flyby, their inclusion decreased Ida's downtrack error from 78 to 60 km and its out-of-plane error from 58 to 44 km.

Grid adaptation using chimera composite overlapping meshes

The objective of this paper is to perform grid adaptation using composite overlapping meshes in regions of large gradient to accurately capture the salient features during computation. The chimera grid scheme, a multiple overset mesh technique, is used in combination with a Navier-Stokes solver. The numerical solution is first converged to a steady state based on an initial coarse mesh. Solution-adaptive enhancement is then performed by using a secondary fine grid system which oversets on top of the base grid in the high-gradient region, but without requiring the mesh boundaries to join in any special way. Communications through boundary interfaces between those separated grids are carried out using trilinear interpolation. Application to the Euler equations for shock reflections and to shock wave/boundary layer interaction problem are tested. With the present method, the salient features are well-resolved.

Sense and antisense transcripts of the developmentally regulated murine hsp70.2 gene are expressed in distinct and only partially overlapping areas in the adult brain

We have examined the spatial pattern of expression of a member of the hsp70 gene family, hsp70.2, in the mouse central nervous system. Surprisingly, RNA blot analysis and in situ hybridization revealed abundant expression of an 'antisense' hsp70.2 transcript in several areas of adult mouse brain. Two different transcripts recognized by sense and antisense riboprobes for the hsp70.2 gene were expressed in distinct and only partially overlapping neuronal populations. RNA blot analysis revealed low levels of the 2.7 kb transcript of hsp70.2 in several areas of the brain, with highest signal in the hippocampus. Abundant expression of a slightly larger (approximately 2.8 kb) 'antisense' transcript was detected in several brain regions, notably in the brainstem, cerebellum, mesencephalic tectum, thalamus, cortex, and hippocampus. In situ hybridization revealed that the sense and antisense transcripts were both predominantly neuronal and localized to the same cell types in the granular layer of the cerebellum, trapezoid nucleus of the superior olivary complex, locus coeruleus and hippocampus. The hsp70.2 antisense transcripts were particularly abundant in the frontal cortex, dentate gyrus, subthalamic nucleus, zona incerta, superior and inferior colliculi, central gray, brainstem, and cerebellar Purkinje cells. Our findings have revealed a distinct cellular and spatial localization of both sense and antisense transcripts, demonstrating a new level of complexity in the function of the heat shock genes.
