Laser-Induced Optical Pumping Measurements of Cross Section for Fine- and Hyperfine-Structure Transitions in Sodium Induced by Collisions with Helium and Argon Atoms

Optical pumping of the ground states of sodium can radically alter the shape of the laser-induced fluorescence excitation spectrum, complicating measurements of temperature, pressure, etc., which are based on these spectra. Modeling of the fluorescence using rate equations for the eight hyperfine states of the sodium D manifolds can be used to quantify the contribution to the ground state pumping of transitions among the hyperfine excited states induced by collisions with buffer gas atoms. This model is used here to determine, from the shape of experimental spectra, cross sections lor DELTA.F transitions of the P(sub 3/2) state induced by collisions with helium and argon atoms, for a range of values assumed for the P(sub 1/2), DELTA.F cross sections. The hyperfine cross sections measured using this method, which to our knowledge is novel, are compared with cross sections for transitions involving polarized magnetic substates m(sub F) measured previously using polarization sensitive absorption. Also, fine-structure transition cross sections were measured in the pumped vapor, giving agreement with previous measurements made in the absence of pumping.

The hyperfine cross sections measured using this method, which is thought to be novel, are compared with cross sections for transitions involving polarized magnetic substates, m(sub F), measured previously using polarization sensitive absorption. Also, fine structure transition ((Delta)J) cross sections were measured in the pumped vapor, giving agreement with previous measurements made in the absence of pumping.

Quantum-mechanical theory including angular momenta analysis of atom-atom collisions in a laser field

The problem of two atoms colliding in the presence of an intense radiation field, such as that of a laser, is investigated. The radiation field, which couples states of different electronic symmetry, is described by the number state representation while the electronic degrees of freedom (plus spin-orbit interaction) are discussed in terms of a diabatic representation. The total angular momentum of the field-free system and the angular momentum transferred by absorption (or emission) of a photon are explicitly considered in the derivation of the coupled scattering equations. A model calculation is discussed for the Xe + F collision system.

Annihilation during positron-hydrogen collisions

Using the precision s- and p-wave elastic-scattering wave functions obtained previously, we have calculated the annihilation rate for positrons colliding with hydrogen atoms below the positronium-formation threshold. The s-wave results agree well with those of Humberston, while the p-wave results, which are new, contribute about 20% of the total at the higher energies.

Efficient sensor/model based on-line collision detection for planetary manipulators

We present an algorithm that uses the Oriented Bounding Box (OBB) and a new primitive called the Oriented Bounding Prism (OBP) to detect potential self-collisions and collisions with terrain object sensed with the rover's on-board stereo camera; the algorithm thus has both model-based and sensor-based components.

Toward a Physical Characterization of Raindrop Collision Outcome Regimes

A comprehensive raindrop collision outcome regime diagram that delineates the physical conditions associated with the outcome regimes (i.e., bounce, coalescence, and different breakup types) of binary raindrop collisions is proposed. The proposed diagram builds on a theoretical regime diagram defined in the phase space of collision Weber numbers We and the drop diameter ratio p by including critical angle of impact considerations. In this study, the theoretical regime diagram is first evaluated against a comprehensive dataset for drop collision experiments representative of raindrop collisions in nature. Subsequently, the theoretical regime diagram is modified to explicitly describe the dominant regimes of raindrop interactions in (We, p) by delineating the physical conditions necessary for the occurrence of distinct types of collision-induced breakup (neck/filament, sheet, disk, and crown breakups) based on critical angle of impact consideration. Crown breakup is a subtype of disk breakup for lower collision kinetic energy that presents distinctive morphology. Finally, the experimental results are analyzed in the context of the comprehensive collision regime diagram, and conditional probabilities that can be used in the parameterization of breakup kernels in stochastic models of raindrop dynamics are provided.

Granulites from Northwest Indian Shield: Their differences and similarities with Southern Indian granulite terrain

Granulite facies suite in the NW Indian Shield is exposed at Sand Mata, Udaipur district, Rajasthan, as an oval-shaped massif within amphibolite facies rocks of the Banded Gneissic Complex (3.5 to 2.6 b.y. old) - a possible analogue of the Peninsular gneiss of Dharwar craton. On the basis of quantitative P-T estimates, combined with the textural evidence for the crystallization sequence of the Al-silicate polymorphs (kyanite to sillimanite to kyanite) in the pelitic granulite, the deduced P-T path for the Sand Mata granulites is the reverse of that characterizing the Plate tectonic collision zone. It, however, agrees with the P-T path inferred in the case of the southern Indian granulitic rocks.

Elastic Electron Scattering by Laser-Excited (sup 138)Ba (...6s6p (sup 1)P(sub 1)) Atoms

The result of a joint experimental and theoretical study concerning elastic electron scattering by laser-excited (sup 138)Ba (...6s6p (sup 1)P(sub 1)) atoms are presented. From these studies, we extracted differential scattering cross sections (DCS's) and collision parameters for elastic scattering by the coherently prepared (sup 1)P(sub 1) atoms.

Single particle momentum and angular distributions in hadron-hadron collisions at ultrahigh energies

The forward-backward charged multiplicity distribution (P n sub F, n sub B) of events in the 540 GeV antiproton-proton collider has been extensively studied by the UA5 Collaboration. It was pointed out that the distribution with respect to n = n sub F + n sub B satisfies approximate KNO scaling and that with respect to Z = n sub F - n sub B is binomial. The geometrical model of hadron-hadron collision interprets the large multiplicity fluctuation as due to the widely different nature of collisions at different impact parameters b. For a single impact parameter b, the collision in the geometrical model should exhibit stochastic behavior. This separation of the stochastic and nonstochastic (KNO) aspects of multiparticle production processes gives conceptually a lucid and attractive picture of such collisions, leading to the concept of partition temperature T sub p and the single particle momentum spectrum to be discussed in detail.

Low-perigee aerodynamic heating during orbital flight of an atmosphere Explorer

An extensive, low-perigee orbital aerodynamic heating study was undertaken in support of the Atmosphere Explorer-C Temperature Alarm. State of the art of low-density, high-speed flows, some models of the earth's atmosphere, external flow-field definition, thermodynamic and transport properties of atmospheric gases, the accommodation coefficient orbital thermal environment, and correlation of theory and measurements are discussed. Aerodynamic heating rates are determined for eight selected orbits by means of a reduced, analytical model verified by both ground test and flight data. These heating rates are compared with classical free-molecule and first-order collision regime values.
