The varying temperature- and pressure-induced phase transition pathways in hybrid improper ferroelectric Sr 3 Sn 2 O 7

A variable-temperature and pressure single-crystal diffraction study of hybrid improper ferroelectric Sr 3 Sn 2 O 7 is reported. In combination with symmetry analysis, we reveal that the application of pressure and temperature induce distinct phase transition pathways, driven by a differing response of the octahedral rotations to these stimuli. Contrary to what has been previously predicted, we observe the ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition between 10.17(18) and 12.13(14) GPa, meaning the hybrid improper ferroelectric phase remains stable to significantly higher pressures than expected.

A chiral switchable photovoltaic ferroelectric 1D perovskite

Spin and valley degrees of freedom in materials without inversion symmetry promise previously unknown device functionalities, such as spin-valleytronics. Control of material symmetry with electric fields (ferroelectricity), while breaking additional symmetries, including mirror symmetry, could yield phenomena where chirality, spin, valley, and crystal potential are strongly coupled. Here we report the synthesis of a halide perovskite semiconductor that is simultaneously photoferroelectricity switchable and chiral. Spectroscopic and structural analysis, and first-principles calculations, determine the material to be a previously unknown low-dimensional hybrid perovskite (R)-(-)-1-cyclohexylethylammonium/(S)-(+)-1 cyclohexylethylammonium) PbI 3 . Optical and electrical measurements characterize its semiconducting, ferroelectric, switchable pyroelectricity and switchable photoferroelectric properties. Temperature dependent structural, dielectric and transport measurements reveal a ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition. Circular dichroism spectroscopy confirms its chirality. The development of a material with such a combination of these properties will facilitate the exploration of phenomena such as electric field and chiral enantiomer–dependent Rashba-Dresselhaus splitting and circular photogalvanic effects

Electronic-grade epitaxial (111) KTaO 3 heterostructures

KTaO 3 heterostructures have recently attracted attention as model systems to study the interplay of quantum paraelectricity, spin-orbit coupling, and superconductivity. However, the high and low vapor pressures of potassium and tantalum present processing challenges to creating heterostructure interfaces clean enough to reveal the intrinsic quantum properties. Here, we report superconducting heterostructures based on high-quality epitaxial (111) KTaO 3 thin films using an adsorption-controlled hybrid PLD to overcome the vapor pressure mismatch. Electrical and structural characterizations reveal that the higher-quality heterostructure interface between amorphous LaAlO 3 and KTaO 3 thin films supports a two-dimensional electron gas with substantially higher electron mobility, superconducting transition temperature, and critical current density than that in bulk single-crystal KTaO 3 -based heterostructures. Our hybrid approach may enable epitaxial growth of other alkali metal–based oxides that lie beyond the capabilities of conventional methods.

Emergent ferroelectricity in subnanometer binary oxide films on silicon

The critical size limit of voltage-switchable electric dipoles has extensive implications for energy-efficient electronics, underlying the importance of ferroelectric order stabilized at reduced dimensionality. Here, we report on the thickness-dependent antiferroelectric-to-ferroelectric phase transition in zirconium dioxide (ZrO 2 ) thin films on silicon. The emergent ferroelectricity and hysteretic polarization switching in ultrathin ZrO 2 , conventionally a paraelectric material, notably persists down to a film thickness of 5 angstroms, the fluorite-structure unit-cell size. This approach to exploit three-dimensional centrosymmetric materials deposited down to the two-dimensional thickness limit, particularly within this model fluorite-structure system that possesses unconventional ferroelectric size effects, offers substantial promise for electronics, demonstrated by proof-of-principle atomic-scale nonvolatile ferroelectric memory on silicon. Additionally, it is also indicative of hidden electronic phenomena that are achievable across a wide class of simple binary materials.

Quantum critical electro-optic and piezo-electric nonlinearities

Although electro-optic (EO) nonlinearities are essential for many quantum and classical photonics applications, a major challenge is inefficient modulation in cryogenic environments. Guided by the connection between phase transitions and nonlinearity, we identify the quantum paraelectric perovskite SrTiO 3 as a strong cryogenic EO [>500 picometers per volt (pm/V)] and piezo-electric material (>90 picocoulombs per newton) at T = 5 K, at frequencies to at least 1 megahertz. Furthermore, by tuning SrTiO 3 toward quantum criticality, we more than double the EO and piezo-electric effects, demonstrating a linear Pockels coefficient above 1000 pm/V. Furthermore, our results probe the link between quantum phase transitions, dielectric susceptibility, and nonlinearity, unlocking opportunities in cryogenic optical and mechanical systems and providing a framework for discovering new nonlinear materials.

A Lattice Litany for Transition Metal Oxides

In this tribute to K Alex Müeller, I describe how his early insights have influenced future decades of research on perovskite ferroelectrics and more broadly transition metal oxides (TMOs) and related quantum materials. I use his influence on my own research journey to discuss impacts in three areas: structural phase transitions, precursor structure, and quantum paraelectricity. I emphasize materials functionality in ground, metastable, and excited states arising from competitions among lattice, charge, and spin degrees of freedom, which results in highly tunable landscapes and complex networks of multiscale configurations controlling macroscopic functions. I discuss competitions between short- and long-range forces as particularly important in TMOs (and related materials classes) because of their localized and directional metal orbitals and the polarizable oxygen ions. I emphasize crucial consequences of elasticity and metal–oxygen charge transfer

An Integrated Theoretical and Experimental Approach to Achieve Highly Polarizable Relaxor Ferroelectric Liquid Crystalline Polymers

In this project, we have designed and synthesized a series of aliphatic sulfonlyated chiral and achiral polyether. The major objective is to achieve ferroelectric liquid crystalline polymers with a high spontaneous polarization (0.04-0.08 C/m2). Due to the strong dipole-dipole interaction among the sulfonyl side groups, which resembles that among water molecules, these polyethers can exhibit various liquid crystalline self-assemblies without any rigid mesogens. By tuning the position of the sulfonyl groups, single versus double sulfonyl groups, and spacer/tail length and methyl branches, the liquid crystalline phases include smectic A, smectic C, and hexagonal columnar phases. When the single sulfonyl group is next to the main chain or disulfonyl groups are separated by a short C3 spacer, the dipolar interaction is too strong to allow any dipole switching. As a result, the linear dielectric behavior is observed with a low dielectric constant of 5-7. When the single sulfonyl groups are away from the main chain, the paraelectric behavior is obtained with a high dielectric constant around 20. From this study, we predict that by further tailoring the intermolecular interactions among the disulfonyl side groups, it is possible to achieve ferroelectric property for these liquid crystalline polymers. If successful, these ferroelectric liquid crystalline polymers can be used for efficient electrocaloric cooling applications.

Ferroelectric Large Polarons and Defect Tolerance in Multi-Component Lead Halide Perovskites

Solvation plays a pivotal role in chemistry and biology. A solid-state analogy of solvation is polaron formation, but the magnitude of Coulomb screening is typically an order-of-magnitude weaker than that of solvation in aqueous solutions. Here the PI aims to explore a new class of polarons, the ferroelectric large polaron, which allows efficient Coulomb screening of an electron or hole by extended ordering of dipoles from symmetry-broken unit cells. This kind of local ordering is reflected in the ferroelectric-like THz dielectric responses of lead halide perovskites (LHPs) and may be partially responsible for their exceptional optoelectronic performances. A charge carrier may be localized to and/or induce the formation of nanoscale domain boundaries of locally ordered dipoles in a ferroelectric or paraelectric material, i.e., crystal structure with polar unit cells or polar fluctuations. The ability to form ferroelectric large polarons can result in the efficient screening of charge carriers from scattering with other charge carriers, with charged defects, and with longitudinal optical phonons, thus contributing to enhanced optoelectronic properties. During the past funding period, the PI has explored efficient charge carrier screening in three-dimensional (3D) LHP crystals and has developed the ferroelectric large polaron model to explain a range of carrier properties in these materials. The PI has also developed a new experimental tool, two-dimensional optical Kerr effect (2D-OKE), which is particularly powerful in probing photophysical properties with exquisite energy resolution at or near the bandgap. During the next funding periods, the PI aims to establish the applicability of the ferroelectric large polaron proposal as a general principle for the design/search of defect tolerant semiconductors in optoelectronics. Preliminary experiments on model semiconductor systems beyond LHPs have demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed research.

Nucleation and growth of polar clusters with in-phase tilts into a long-range ferroelectric matrix in a sodium niobate based complex relaxor

In this study, we have investigated the temperature dependence of atomic ordering at multiple length scales in a lead-free sodium niobate-based relaxor, i.e., 0.75 NaNbO 3 -0.25 Ba 0.9⁢ Ca 0.1⁢ TiO 3 (NN-25BCT) via synchrotron x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and pair distribution function analysis. High-resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction (SXRD) measurements reveal a ferroelectric phase transition in the relaxor ferroelectric NN-25BCT below the Vogel-Fulcher freezing temperature (𝑇 VF ≈ 270 K). In addition, SXRD analysis demonstrates the competition between in-phase octahedral tilting and ferroelectric order at the long-range scale using mode crystallography. On the other hand, Raman spectroscopic analysis provides evidence of polar ordering for 𝑇 > 𝑇 VF (with tetragonal symmetry) persisting up to the Burns temperature (𝑇 B ). Furthermore, pair distribution function (PDF) analysis reveals the presence of a polar antiferrodistortive tetragonal phase with 𝑃⁢4⁢𝑏𝑚 space group at short ranges throughout the studied temperatures (i.e., 110 K ≤ 𝑇 ≤500 K), irrespective of nonpolar long-range ordering above 𝑇 VF . Therefore, our measurements provide direct evidence for the presence of polar ordering at short ranges and their gradual transformation into long-range polar ordering using an integrated multiscale structural analysis. In conclusion, as a result of a transition from relaxor to a ferroelectric phase in the vicinity of room temperature, NN-25BCT can be exploited for applications in pyroelectric detectors, electrocaloric devices, and multilayered ceramic capacitors.
