Possible Quantum Paramagnetism in Compressed Sr 2 IrO 4

The result of compression on the magnetic ground state of Sr 2 IrO 4 is studied with x-ray resonant techniques in the diamond anvil cell. The weak interlayer exchange coupling between square-planar 2D IrO 2 layers is easily modified upon compression, with a crossover between magnetic structures around 7 GPa mimicking the effect of an applied magnetic field at ambient pressure. Higher pressures drive an order-disorder magnetic phase transition with no magnetic order detected above 17–20 GPa. The persistence of strong exchange interactions between J eff = 1 / 2 magnetic moments within the insulating IrO 2 layers up to at least 35 GPa points to a highly frustrated magnetic state in compressed Sr 2 IrO 4 , opening the door for realization of novel quantum paramagnetic phases driven by extended 5 d orbitals with entangled spin and orbital degrees of freedom.

Calculated electron paramagnetic resonance g-tensor and hyperfine parameters for zinc vacancy and N related defects in ZnO

Various defects in ZnO, focused on substitutional N O and N 2 in various sites, O-site, interstitial and Zn-site are studied using first-principles calculations with the goal of understanding the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) center reported for N 2 in ZnO and substitutional N on the O-site. The g tensors are calculated using the gauge including projector augmented wave (GIPAW) method and compared with experiments. The g-tensor of the free $N^{+}_{2}$ and $N^{–}_{2}$ radicals and their various contributions within the GIPAW theory are analyzed first to provide a baseline reference for the accuracy of the method and for understanding the N 2 behavior in ZnO. Previous controversies on the site location of N 2 in ZnO for this EPR center and on the shallow or deep nature and donor or acceptor nature of this center are resolved. Here, we find that the N 2 on the Zn site is mostly zinc-vacancy like in its spin density and g-tensor, while for the O-site, a model with the N 2 axis lying in-the basal plane and the singly occupied π g -orbital along the c axis provides good agreement with experiment. For the interstitial location, if the N 2 is not strongly interacting with the surroundings, no levels in the gap are found and hence also no possible EPR center. The calculated g-tensors for N O and V Zn are also found to be in good agreement with experiment. The effects of different functionals affecting the localization of the spin density are shown to affect the g-tensor values.

Quantum paramagnetism in a non-Kramers rare-earth oxide: Monoclinic Pr 2 Ti 2 O 7

Little is so far known about the magnetism of the A 2 B 2 O 7 monoclinic layered perovskites that replace the spin-ice supporting pyrochlore structure for r A /r B > 1.78. We show that high quality monoclinic Pr 2 Ti 2 O 7 single crystals with a three-dimensional network of non-Kramers Pr 3+ ions that interact through edge-sharing superexchange interactions, form a singlet ground-state quantum paramagnet that does not undergo any magnetic phase transitions down to, at least, 1.8 K. The chemical phase stability, structure, and magnetic properties of the layered perovskite Pr 2 Ti 2 O 7 were investigated using x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and magnetization measurements. Synthesis of polycrystalline samples with the nominal compositions of Pr 2 Ti 2+x O 7 (–0.16 ≤ x ≤ 0.16 ) showed that deviations from the Pr 2 Ti 2 O 7 stoichiometry lead to secondary phases of related structures including the perovskite phase Pr 2/3 TiO 3 and the orthorhombic phases Pr 4 Ti 9 O 24 and Pr 2 TiO 5 . No indications of site disordering (stuffing and antistuffing) or vacancy defects were observed in the Pr 2 Ti 2 O 7 majority phase. A procedure for growth of high-structural-quality stoichiometric single crystals of Pr 2 Ti 2 O 7 by the traveling solvent floating zone method is reported. Thermomagnetic measurements of single-crystalline Pr 2 Ti 2 O 7 reveal an isolated singlet ground state that we associate with the low-symmetry crystal electric-field environments that split the (2J + 1 = 9)-fold degenerate spin-orbital multiplets of the four differently coordinated Pr 3+ ions into 36 isolated singlets resulting in an anisotropic temperature-independent van Vleck susceptibility at low T. Here, a small isotropic Curie term is associated with 0.96(2)% noninteracting Pr 4+ impurities.
