Triton System’s Wave Energy Converter (WEC) uses an oscillating water column approach to provide small scale power to ocean observing and navigational buoys. Biofouling and corrosion are a major concern for all ocean-deployed components, especially when mechanical motion is involved. Triton Systems will collaborate with PNNL to evaluate seals, materials, and component performance in a controlled biofouling test environment. Results from this testing will be used to improve seal design and material selection, mitigating risk of premature failure during open water testing and evaluation.

This report summarizes the purpose, procedures, results, and conclusions of prolonged seawater tank testing of a prototype wave energy converter apparatus. Test objectives included determination of the effectiveness of a biofouling mitigation element in one test assembly compared to a control, and system force over many cycles of actuation over months.
The purpose of the project was to evaluate DuAlumin-3D, an ORNL designed Al alloy, for additive manufacturing of high-performance automotive components. The project consisted of additively manufacturing a cylindrical block of representative material which was then heat treated before machining into test coupons. Testing included tensile tests as a function of temperature, high-cycle fatigue testing as a function of temperature, density and elastic modulus measurements, and thermophysical property measurements. Fractography was also performed on failed high-cycle fatigue specimens. The results were compared against benchmark AM Al alloys and current high-performance conventionally manufactured alloys. Overall, the DuAlumin-3D material outperformed the incumbent materials in mechanical properties, especially at elevated temperatures, while maintaining broadly similar thermophysical properties. The results of this study support further maturation of the material for additive manufacturing of high-performance automotive components.

A design optimization campaign was conducted to search for improved combustion profiles that enhance gasoline compression ignition in a heavy-duty diesel engine with a geometric compression ratio of 17.3. A large-scale design of experiments approach was used for the optimization, employing three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics simulations. The main parameters explored include geometric features, injector specifications, and swirl motion. Both stepped-lip and re-entrant bowls were included in order to assess their respective performance implications. A total of 256 design candidates were prepared using the software package CAESES for automated and simultaneous geometry generation and combustion recipe perturbation. The design optimization was conducted for three engine loads representing light to medium load conditions. The design candidates were evaluated for fuel efficiency, emissions, fuel-air mixing, and global combustion behavior. Simulation results showed that the optimum designs were all stepped-lip bowls, due to improvements in fuel-air mixing, as well as reduced heat loss and emissions formation. Improvements in indicated specific fuel consumption of up to 3.2% were achieved while meeting engine-out NOx emission targets of 1-1.5 g/kW center dot h. Re-entrant bowls performed worse compared to the baseline design, and significant performance variations occurred across the load points. Specifically, the re-entrant bowls were on par with the stepped-lip bowls under light load conditions, but significant deteriorations occurred under higher load conditions. As a final task, selected optimized designs were then evaluated under full-load conditions.
A cylinder assembly with a cylinder liner and a sleeve is provided that includes features that reduce coolant flow stagnation. The sleeve encloses a center section of the cylinder liner to form cooling channels that removes excess heat from the combustion area of the cylinder. The cylinder liner includes features for cooling between bridges in the cylinder's exhaust port.
