Pulse and Polarization Structures in Axion-Converted X-Rays from Pulsars

Neutron stars (NSs) with their strong magnetic fields and hot dense cores could be powerful probes of axions, a classic benchmark of feebly coupled new particles, through abundant production of axions with the axion-nucleon coupling and subsequent conversion into x-rays due to the axion-photon coupling. In this Letter, we point out that the pulsation structures in both the intensity and polarization of x-rays from NSs could provide us additional information about axions and their couplings. We develop new analytical formalisms of pulsation-polarization structure applicable to a wide range of NSs in the axion scenario and argue that they hold in complicated astrophysical environments. As a case study, we apply our formalism to a representative X-ray Dim Isolated Neutron Star, RX J1856.6-3754, with an unexpected hard x-ray excess which might be axion induced. We show with an updated fit that the axion explanation is compatible with both the intensity and pulsation data available, and combining the pulsation data does not shift the posterior by more than 1⁢𝜎. Yet, the preferred parameter space is close to being excluded by other astrophysical constraints. With a 75% reduction of the uncertainties in the pulsation data, we could potentially draw a definite conclusion on the axion-induced x-rays at more than 3⁢𝜎 level.

Unlocking the Potential of A-Site Ca-Doped LaCo 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ : A Redox-Stable Cathode Material Enabling High Current Density in Direct CO 2 Electrolysis

Massive carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emission from recent human industrialization has affected the global ecosystem and raised great concern for environmental sustainability. The solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) is a promising energy conversion device capable of efficiently converting CO 2 into valuable chemicals using renewable energy sources. However, Sr-containing cathode materials face the challenge of Sr carbonation during CO 2 electrolysis, which greatly affects the energy conversion efficiency and long-term stability. Thus, A-site Ca-doped La1– x CaxCo 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ (0.2 ≤ x ≤ 0.6) oxides are developed for direct CO 2 conversion to carbon monoxide (CO) in an intermediate-temperature SOEC (IT-SOEC). With a polarization resistance as low as 0.18 O cm 2 in pure CO 2 atmosphere, a remarkable current density of 2.24 A cm –2 was achieved at 1.5 V with La 0.6 Ca 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ (LCCF64) as the cathode in La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Ga 0.83 Mg 0.17 O 3-δ (LSGM) electrolyte (300 µm) supported electrolysis cells using La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ (LSCF) as the air electrode at 800 °C. Furthermore, symmetrical cells with LCCF64 as the electrodes also show promising electrolysis performance of 1.78 A cm –2 at 1.5 V at 800 °C. In addition, stable cell performance has been achieved on direct CO 2 electrolysis at an applied constant current of 0.5 A cm –2 at 800 °C. The easily removable carbonate intermediate produced during direct CO 2 electrolysis makes LCCF64 a promising regenerable cathode. The outstanding electrocatalytic performance of the LCCF64 cathode is ascribed to the highly active and stable metal/perovskite interfaces that resulted from the in situ exsolved Co/CoFe nanoparticles and the additional oxygen vacancies originated from the Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 phase synergistically providing active sites for CO 2 adsorption and electrolysis. Here this study offers a novel approach to design catalysts with high performance for direct CO 2 electrolysis.

Assessing Nonlinear Polarization in Electrochemical Cells using AC Impedance Spectroscopy

AC impedance spectroscopy is widely used to evaluate performance limitations in energy storage and conversion devices (e.g., batteries, supercapacitors, and fuel cells). This work shows that integrating the resistive elements in an equivalent circuit as functions of steady-state current enables one to recover overpotentials associated with different processes (e.g., ion migration, charge transfer, and diffusion) in nonlinear electrochemical power supplies. Closed form expressions for diffusion overpotentials are derived using this method for transmissive and reflective boundary conditions and three electrode symmetries (planar, cylindrical, and spherical). Discussion is also extended to macroscopically homogenous porous electrodes which are relevant for most real-world devices. Overall, the approach described herein is a powerful tool to identify rate-limiting steps and guide material/component design.

Optimal Cosmic Microwave Background Lensing Reconstruction and Parameter Estimation with SPTpol Data

Here, we perform the first simultaneous Bayesian parameter inference and optimal reconstruction of the gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), using 100 deg 2 of polarization observations from the SPTpol receiver on the South Pole Telescope. These data reach noise levels as low as 5.8 μK arcmin in polarization, which are low enough that the typically used quadratic estimator (QE) technique for analyzing CMB lensing is significantly suboptimal. Conversely, the Bayesian procedure extracts all lensing information from the data and is optimal at any noise level. We infer the amplitude of the gravitational lensing potential to be ${A}_{\phi }=0.949\,\pm \,0.122$ using the Bayesian pipeline, consistent with our QE pipeline result, but with 17% smaller error bars. The Bayesian analysis also provides a simple way to account for systematic uncertainties, performing a similar job as frequentist "bias hardening" or linear bias correction, and reducing the systematic uncertainty on A Φ due to polarization calibration from almost half of the statistical error to effectively zero. Finally, we jointly constrain A Φ along with A L , the amplitude of lensing-like effects on the CMB power spectra, demonstrating that the Bayesian method can be used to easily infer parameters both from an optimal lensing reconstruction and from the delensed CMB, while exactly accounting for the correlation between the two. These results demonstrate the feasibility of the Bayesian approach on real data, and pave the way for future analysis of deep CMB polarization measurements with SPT-3G, Simons Observatory, and CMB-S4, where improvements relative to the QE can reach 1.5 times tighter constraints on A Φ and seven times lower effective lensing reconstruction noise.

Gradient Field Detection Using Interference of Stimulated Microwave Optical Sidebands

Here, we demonstrate that stimulated microwave optical sideband generation using parametric frequency conversion can be utilized as a powerful technique for coherent state detection in atomic physics experiments. The technique has advantages over traditional absorption or polarization rotation-based measurements and enables the isolation of signal photons from probe photons. We outline a theoretical framework that accurately models sideband generation using a density matrix formalism. Using this technique, we demonstrate a novel intrinsic magnetic gradiometer that detects magnetic gradient fields between two spatially separated vapor cells by measuring the frequency of the beat note between sidebands generated within each cell. The sidebands are produced with high efficiency using parametric frequency conversion of a probe beam interacting with 87 Rb atoms in a coherent superposition of magnetically sensitive hyperfine ground states. Interference between the sidebands generates a low-frequency beat note whose frequency is determined by the magnetic field gradient between the two vapor cells. In contrast to traditional gradiometers the intermediate step of measuring the magnetic field experienced by the two vapor cells is unnecessary. We show that this technique can be readily implemented in a practical device by demonstrating a compact magnetic gradiometer sensor head with a sensitivity of 25 fT/cm/ √ Hz with a 4.4 cm baseline, while operating in a noisy laboratory environment unshielded from Earth’s field.

Constraints on dark matter to dark radiation conversion in the late universe with DES-Y1 and external data

We study a phenomenological class of models where dark matter converts to dark radiation in the low redshift epoch. This class of models, dubbed DMDR, characterizes the evolution of comoving dark-matter density with two extra parameters, and may be able to help alleviate the observed discrepancies between early and late-time probes of the Universe. We investigate how the conversion affects key cosmological observables such as the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and matter power spectra. Combining 3x2pt data from Year 1 of the Dark Energy Survey, Planck-2018 CMB temperature and polarization data, supernovae (SN) Type Ia data from Pantheon, and baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) data from BOSS DR12, MGS and 6dFGS, we place new constraints on the amount of dark matter that has converted to dark radiation and the rate of this conversion. The fraction of the dark matter that has converted since the beginning of the Universe in units of the current amount of dark matter, ζ, is constrained at 68% confidence level to be <0.32 for DES-Y1 3x2pt data, <0.030 for CMB+SN+BAO data, and <0.037 for the combined dataset. The probability that the DES and CMB+SN+BAO datasets are concordant increases from 4% for the ΛCDM model to 8% (less tension) for DMDR. The tension in S8=σ8Ωm/0.3 between DES-Y1 3x2pt and CMB+SN+BAO is slightly reduced from 2.3σ to 1.9σ. We find no reduction in the Hubble tension when the combined data is compared to distance-ladder measurements in the DMDR model. The maximum-posterior goodness-of-fit statistics of DMDR and ΛCDM model are comparable, indicating no preference for the DMDR cosmology over ΛCDM.

Orientation-dependent enhanced ionization in acetylene revealed by ultrafast cross-polarized pulse pairs

We investigate the orientation dependence of enhanced ionization (EI) during strong-field-driven nuclear motion in acetylene (C 2 ⁢H 2 ). Here, we both initiate and probe molecular dynamics in acetylene with intense 6-fs cross-polarized pulse pairs, separated by a variable delay. Following multiple ionization by the first pulse, acetylene undergoes simultaneous elongation of the carbon-carbon and carbon-hydrogen bonds, enabling further ionization by the second pulse and the formation of a very highly charged state, [C 2 ⁢H 2 ] 6+ . At small interpulse delays (< 20 fs), this enhancement occurs when the molecule is aligned to the probe pulse. Conversely, at large delays (> 40 fs), formation of [C 2 ⁢H 2 ] 6+ occurs when the molecule is aligned to the pump pulse. By analyzing the polarization and time dependence of sequentially ionized [C 2 ⁢H 2 ] 6+ , we resolve two transient alignments that both contribute to a large increase in the multiple ionization yield. In conclusion, this cross-polarized pulse pair scheme uniquely enables selective probing of deeply bound orbitals, providing new insights on orientation-dependent EI in highly charged hydrocarbons.

Effect of ethoxylation and lauryl alcohol on the self-assembly of sodium laurylsulfate: Significant structural and rheological transformation

Fatty alcohols are added to the surfactant solutions to modify foaming and lubrication properties, while the degree of ethoxylation is increased to improve mildness to the skin. However, it is envisioned that both parameters are capable of manipulating rheological and morphological properties. Therefore, an efficient control over the carbon chain length, amount of fatty alcohol and degree of ethoxylation could modify the surfactant self-assembly in an unprecedented way. The present work is focused on understanding the structural transformation, intermolecular interactions and rheological properties of the colloidal systems containing various amounts of lauryl alcohol (LA), and surfactant with varying degrees of ethoxylation. Additionally, combined small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, rheological and morphological studies were performed to elucidate these properties. The results reveal that an increase in LA content increases the system viscosity ultimately forming a gel, and drives the assembly pattern of the surfactant from ellipsoidal micellar to lamellar via a vesicular and vesicular/lamellar mixed intermediates. Conversely, higher degrees of ethoxylation delay the onset of morphological transformation and gel formation. The interplay between hydrophobic and polar interactions coupled with hydrogen bonding interactions drive the overall rheological and morphological transformations. Therefore, fine-tuning residual chemicals can offer a novel tool for optimization of the product formulation.

Modulating the Contact Angle between Nonpolar Polymers and SiO 2 Nanoparticles

Polymer–nanoparticle interactions play an important role in determining the morphology and properties of polymer nanocomposites and controlling the polymeric reactions involving heterogeneous catalysts. Here, in this study, we modulate the interactions between nonpolar polymers and nanoparticles by modifying the nanoparticle surface chemistry and quantify the interaction strength through direct contact angle measurements. We investigate the interactions of three nonpolar polymers, polystyrene, polyethylene, and polycyclooctene, with silica nanoparticles whose surface chemistry has been modified by atomic layer deposition of titania and calcium carbonate and by alkyl silanization. Significant differences in polymer–nanoparticle interactions are observed, which can be attributed to differences in the polarizability of the polymers and oxide surface composition. Compared to fully hydrogenated polycyclooctene, polycyclooctene is shown to have stronger interactions with most metal oxides; however, this trend is reversed following alkyl silanization of the silica nanoparticles, which makes the surface of the particles less polar. These differences in interactions can be leveraged to make polymer nanocomposites with unique properties and enable the selective conversion of polymers without the need for separations.

In Situ Measurement of Stress Corrosion Crack Tip Properties During Environmentally Induced Cracking in Stainless Steel 304L

The influence of the external cathodic area, stress intensity, and electrochemical polarization level on the resultant crack growth rate and crack tip pH and potential was studied for stainless steel 304L in a sodium chloride environment. Before testing, the validity of in situ crack tip property measurements using microprobes and drilled holes was supported through modeling efforts and confirmed with experimental observations. Here, it was found that increasing the R-ratio during corrosion fatigue increased the crack growth rate and decreased the measured crack tip pH of the 304L sample. Decreasing the electrochemical potential (i.e., cathodic polarization) of the bulk sample increased the crack tip pH and stopped measured crack extension under constant K conditions. Conversely, increasing the potential of the bulk sample decreased the crack tip pH and induced cracking under constant K conditions. Decreasing the cathodic area external to the crack increased the measured pH at the crack tip and decreased the crack growth rate under fatigue conditions. For the given configuration, environment, and alloy studied, fatigue crack growth is not sustained by cathodic reactions solely occurring in the crack wake and notch. These results have implications for the ability to predict atmospheric crack growth rates from laboratory, full immersion experiments.

Negative Refraction in Time-Varying Strongly Coupled Plasmonic-Antenna–Epsilon-Near-Zero Systems

Time-varying metasurfaces are emerging as a powerful instrument for the dynamical control of the electromagnetic properties of a propagating wave. Here we demonstrate an efficient time-varying metasurface based on plasmonic nano-antennas strongly coupled to an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) deeply subwavelength film. The plasmonic resonance of the metal resonators strongly interacts with the optical ENZ modes, providing a Rabi level spitting of ~30%. Optical pumping at frequency ω induces a nonlinear polarization oscillating at 2ω responsible for an efficient generation of a phase conjugate and a negative refracted beam with a conversion efficiency that is more than 4 orders of magnitude greater compared to the bare ENZ film. In this work, the introduction of a strongly coupled plasmonic system therefore provides a simple and effective route towards the implementation of ENZ physics at the nanoscale.

Bismuth Enables the Formation of Disordered Birnessite in Rechargeable Alkaline Batteries

Recent advances in rechargeable Zn/MnO$_2$ alkaline batteries have shown promise for scalable energy storage systems which provide a safe, low-cost alternative with a demonstrated lifetime over thousands of cycles. This cathode technology is based on a 2-electron Mn redox process where a layered birnessite-type phase has been shown to form after the first cycle with excellent reversibility between the discharge product, Mn(OH)$_2$. Herein, we investigate the reversible reaction between birnessite and Mn(OH)$_2$ with and without a Bi$_2$O$_3$ additive using multimodal structural characterization techniques during active battery cycling. Diffraction results provide evidence of Bi$^{3+}$ residing in the interlayer of birnessite which prevents irreversible Mn$_3$O$_4$ formation by limiting Mn$^{3+}$ diffusion within the crystal lattice. Also, upon charge no MnOOH intermediate phases are observed. Instead, X-ray absorption and Raman spectroscopy indicate a disordered, non-crystalline birnessite-type phase consisting of mostly neutral H$_2$O within the interlayer. Birnessite phases will reform without Bi$_2$O$_3$ present, but Mn$_3$O$_4$ formation severely polarizes the potential they are formed at, leading to capacity fade. Also, we discuss the reversible Bi$_2$O$_3$ conversion to Bi$^0$ and its contribution to the observed capacity. We expect the results will provide crucial insight into the development of aqueous, rechargeable battery systems utilizing MnO 2 .

Modeling of transverse stimulated Raman scattering in KDP/DKDP in large-aperture plates suitable for polarization control

Transverse stimulated Raman scattering (TSRS) in potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) and deuterated potassium dihydrogen phosphate (DKDP) plates for large-aperture, inertial confinement fusion (ICF)-class laser systems is a well-recognized limitation giving rise to parasitic energy conversion and laser-induced damage. The onset of TSRS is manifested in plates exposed to the ultraviolet section of the beam. TSRS amplification is a coherent process that grows exponentially and is distributed nonuniformly in the crystal and at the crystal surfaces. To understand the growth and spatial distribution of TSRS energy in various configurations, a modeling approach has been developed to simulate the operational conditions relevant to ICF-class laser systems. Specific aspects explored in this work include (i) the behavior of TSRS in large-aperture crystal plates suitable for third-harmonic generation and use as wave plates for polarization control in current-generation ICF-class laser system configurations; (ii) methods, and their limitations, of TSRS suppression and (iii) optimal geometries to guide future designs.

Ferroelectric Polarization in BaTiO 3 Nanocrystals Controls Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation and Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Ferroelectric (FE) semiconductors such as BaTiO 3 support a remnant polarization after the application of an electric field that can promote the separation of photogenerated charge carriers. Here, we demonstrate FE-enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and photoelectrochemical water oxidation with barium titanate nanocrystals for the first time. Nanocrystals of the ferroelectric tetragonal structure type were obtained by a hydrothermal synthesis from TiO 2 and barium hydroxide in 63% yield. BaTiO 3 nanocrystal films on tantalum substrates exhibit water oxidation photocurrents of 0.141 mA cm –2 at 1.23 V RHE under UV light (60 mW cm –2 ) illumination. Electric polarization at 52.8 kV cm –1 normal to the film plane increases the photocurrent by a factor of 2 or decreases it by a factor of 3.5, depending on the field polarity. It also shifts the onset potential by –0.15 or +0.09 V and it modifies the surface photovoltage signal. Lastly, exposure to an electric field increases the H 2 evolution rate of Pt/BaTiO 3 by a factor of ~1.5, and it raises the selectivity of photodeposition of silver onto the (001) facets of the nanocrystal. All FE enhancements can be removed by heating samples above the Curie temperature of BaTiO 3 . Furthermore, these findings can be explained by FE dipole-induced changes to the potential drop across the space charge layer of the material. The ability to use the ferroelectric effect to enhance hydrogen evolution and water oxidation is of potential interest for the development of improved solar energy for fuel conversion systems.

Quantum dot polarisation converter in an optomechanical cavity

We propose a scheme of a quantum photon polarisation converter, which is based on controlled electron – photon – phonon transitions in a hybrid semiconductor nanostructure. This structure consists of a GaAs/InAs quantum dot (QD) that has a parallelepiped shape and contains a single electron, and an optomechanical microcavity (MC) based on a photonic crystal (PC) that supports two orthogonally polarised photonic modes and one mechanical (phonon) mode. Within the framework of the microscopic theory, the QD and MC performance characteristics are found. Populations of states of the system as functions of time and its parameters are calculated. The principal possibility of photon polarisation conversion using transitions in a five-level resonance scheme for coherent (single-photon) and steady-state (subphoton) regimes is shown. The MC optical and mechanical spectra are simulated, and the PC structure parameters are selected to ensure the efficient operation of the converter. (paper)

Spin-Polarized Oxygen Evolution Reaction Enabled by Chiral Molecules Coupled with Ferromagnetic Electrocatalysts

The discovery of chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) revolutionized our understanding of the capabilities of chiral molecules, revealing that chiral molecules can function as spin filters, aligning the spin orientation of electrons when they transmit through them. Recently, CISS has been exploited to direct energy conversion, especially the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, despite the remarkable progress that has been achieved, the effect of CISS in influencing the intermediate species formation and changing the rate-determining step (RDS) is still vague. To understand those key reaction mechanism steps, electrocatalysts with distinct magnetic characteristics, ferromagnetic CoFe2O4 and paramagnetic Co3O4, were synthesized. The results show that spin-polarized charge carriers retain their spin alignment when coupled with ferromagnetic CoFe2O4, akin to the behavior observed under a magnetic field. The Tafel analysis and kinetic isotope studies (kinetic isotope effect) suggest that in the absence of chiral molecules, the initial electron transfer step, the formation of O* species, governs the rate-determining step (RDS). However, introducing chiral molecules shifts the RDS to a combination of the first and second electron transfers, leading to the formation of OOH*. This conclusion was further supported by in situ infrared spectroscopy, which shows that l-methionine-modified CoFe2O4 (l-CoFe2O4) promotes the formation of OOH*, a key intermediate for O2 generation. This study highlights the critical role of CISS in affecting the OER mechanism and intermediate species formation.
