Recent Developments in the Analysis of Couple Oscillator Arrays

This presentation considers linear arrays of coupled oscillators. Our purpose in coupling oscillators together is to achieve high radiated power through the spatial power combining which results when the oscillators are injection locked to each other. York, et. al. have shown that, left to themselves, the ensemble of injection locked oscillators oscillate at the average of the tuning frequencies of all the oscillators. Coupling these arrays achieves high radiated power through coherent spatial power combining. The coupled oscillators are usually designed to produce constant aperture phase. Oscillators are injection locked to each other or to a master oscillator to produce coherent radiation. Oscillators do not necessarily oscillate at their tuning frequency.

Applications of a high power four-way power divider and combiner and a cross-over circuit

Circuits of rectangular waveguides coupled to a cylindrical cavity have been studied. Two types of circuits were developed: a high-power four-way power divider/combiner with less than 0.5 dB insertion loss over a 20 percent bandwidth and a high-power four-port cross-over circuit with less than 0.7 dB insertion loss and 20 dB isolation at X-band. To demonstrate the feasibility of the first circuit, a power combiner was built by connecting four Gunn oscillators to the four rectangular waveguide ports of the radial waveguide. A power combining efficiency of over 70 percent was achieved at X-band. The second circuit was used to feed a dual-polarization cross-slot antenna backed by a cylindrical cavity.

Off-Design Load Analysis of sCO2 Bottoming Cycle for a Natural Gas Combined Cycle Power Plant with Carbon Capture

As an alternative to a steam cycle, a supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) power cycle can be considered. Able et. al performed an analysis of an sCO2 cycle in a 2x2-1 configuration; however, this study did not include carbon capture. Previous studies assumed an H-Frame turbine and added a solvent based 95% carbon capture system and performed a levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) optimization for the plant. Their results suggest a LCOE slightly better than when using a steam cycle. In the study, steam is still generated in the heat recovery sections for the solvent regeneration in the carbon capture stripper reboiler. H-Frame gas turbines are also assumed. This work starts with the optimal design from the mentioned work to analyze the off-design performance of the power plant from 100% down to 50% load. The main operational findings and plant-efficiency for off-load conditions while maintaining the target CO2 capture rate are presented. H-Frame gas turbine off-design performance and exhaust conditions to the heat recovery section are obtained from commercial software, Thermoflow®. The CO2 turbomachinery, heat exchangers and other unit operations are sized and implemented in an Aspen Plus® model. Using the gas turbine exhaust conditions as input, the sCO2 cycle is optimized by adjusting stream split ratios, sCO2 circulation flowrate and compressor speed for maximum efficiency. This is done while keeping the target 95% CO2 capture.

Off-Design Load Analysis of sCO2 Bottoming Cycle for a Natural Gas Combined Cycle Power Plant with Carbon Capture

This work starts with the optimal design from Pidaparti et. al (2024) to analyze the off-design performance of the power plant from 100% down to 50% load. The main operational findings and plant-efficiency for off-load conditions while maintaining the target CO2 capture rate are presented. The goal of the work is to determine if there is a relative advantage or disadvantage for the sCO2 bottoming cycle compared to the steam bottoming cycle in terms of reduced load efficiency performance for the NGCC with carbon capture. Results show nearly identical efficiency profiles for the two cases from 100% to 50% load.

Design considerations for FET-gated power transistors

An FET-bipolar combinational power transistor configuration (tested up to 300 V, 20 A at 100 kHz) is described. The critical parameters for integrating the chips in hybrid form are examined, and an effort to optimize the overall characteristics of the configuration is discussed. Chip considerations are examined with respect to the voltage and current rating of individual chips, the FET surge capability, the choice of triple diffused transistor or epitaxial transistor for the bipolar element, the current tailing effect, and the implementation of the bipolar transistor and an FET as single chip or separate chips. Package considerations are discussed with respect to package material and geometry, surge current capability of bipolar base terminal bonding, and power losses distribution.

Using Project Accounting to Report the Full Impact of Combined Heat and Power Projects

Well-applied combined heat and power (CHP) is the most efficient method of generating electricity and useful thermal energy, producing substantially less emissions per MWhe compared to other combustion-based power generation technologies. This report explains how to apply the Greenhouse Gas Protocol for Project Accounting (Project Protocol) to quantify and report reductions in emissions resulting from onsite CHP projects that reduces electricity generated on the grid. Use of the Project Protocol captures the full emissions reduction impact realized from CHP systems, including impacts outside the boundaries of the host facility.

Channel Temperature Model for Microwave AlGaN/GaN HEMTs on SiC and Sapphire MMICs in High Power, High Efficiency SSPAs

A key parameter in the design trade-offs made during AlGaN/GaN HEMTs development for microwave power amplifiers is the channel temperature. An accurate determination can, in general, only be found using detailed software; however, a quick estimate is always helpful, as it speeds up the design cycle. This paper gives a simple technique to estimate the channel temperature of a generic microwave AlGaN/GaN HEMT on SiC or Sapphire, while incorporating the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity. The procedure is validated by comparing its predictions with the experimentally measured temperatures in microwave devices presented in three recently published articles. The model predicts the temperature to within 5 to 10 percent of the true average channel temperature. The calculation strategy is extended to determine device temperature in power combining MMICs for solid-state power amplifiers (SSPAs).

Compact Low-Loss Planar Magic-T

This design allows broadband power combining with high isolation between the H port and E port, and achieves a lower insertion loss than any other broadband planar magic-T. Passive micro wave/millimeter-wave signal power is combined both in-phase and out-of-phase at the ports, with the phase error being less than 1 , which is limited by port impedance. The in-phase signal combiner consists of two quarter-wavelength-long transmission lines combined at the microstrip line junction. The out-of-phase signal combiner consists of two half-wavelength-long transmission lines combined in series. Structural symmetry creates a virtual ground plane at the combining junction, and the combined signal is converted from microstrip line to slotline. Optimum realizable characteristic impedances are used so that the magic-T provides broadband response with low return loss. The magic-T is used in microwave and millimeter-wave frequencies, with the operating bandwidth being approximately 100 percent. The minimum isolation obtainable is 32 dB from port E to port H. The magic-T VSWR is less than 1.1 in the operating band. Operating temperature is mainly dependent on the variation in the dielectric constant of the substrate. Using crystallized substrate, the invention can operate in an extremely broad range of temperatures (from 0 to 400 K). It has a very high reliability because it has no moving parts and requires no maintenance, though it is desirable that the magic-T operate in a low-humidity environment. Fabrication of this design is very simple, using only two metallized layers. No bond wires, via holes, or air bridges are required. Additionally, this magic-T can operate as an individual component without auxiliary components.

Laser diode combining for free space optical communication

The maximization of photon delivery to a distant collector in free space optical communications systems calls for a laser diode-combining technique employing wavelength and/or polarization as the bases of its operation. Design considerations for such a combiner encompass high throughput efficiency, diffraction-limited angular divergence, and reasonable volume constraints. Combiners are presently found to require a generalized Strehl ratio concept which includes relative source misalignment; diffraction grating combiners may have a limited number of laser sources which can meet spectral requirements. Methods for the incorporation of a combiner into a communication system are compared. Power combining is concluded to be the best tradeoff of performance and complexity for all systems, except those that are severely limited by either background radiation or component bandwidth.

Project 1: COLLECTS Project and Project 2: M&V for Saputo Cheese Project: Cooperative Research and Development (Final Report)

Project 1: Combined Power's Hyperlight Energy and NLR will collaborate on the DOE Concentrating Optics for Lower Levelized Energy CosTS (COLLECTS) project, DE-FOA-0001268. COLLECTS funding opportunity announcement (FOA) seeks to further concentrated solar power (CSP) system technologies by soliciting disruptive, transformative projects for the concentrating solar collectors in the CSP plant. These innovative projects will seek to surpass the targets set out in the SunShot Vision Study, enabling CSP to be cost-competitive with conventional forms of electric power generation. Projects will target the design and manufacturing of novel solar collectors with the ability to significantly reduce the solar field contribution to the overall levelized cost of energy (LCOE) of the CSP plant, and which have not been previously specifically targeted by CSP FOAs. Project 2: Hyperlight will perform measurement and verification (M&V) of Green House Gases and NLR will evaluate energy consumption reduction.

Orthogonal feeding techniques for tapered slot antennas

For array of "brick" configuration there are electrical and mechanical advantages to feed the antenna with a feed on a substrate perpendicular to the antenna substrate. Different techniques have been proposed for exciting patch antennas using such a feed structure.Rncently, an aperture-coupled dielectric resonator antenna using a perpendicular feed substrate has been demonstrated to have very good power coupling efficiency. For a two-dimensional rectangular array with tapered slot antenna elements, a power combining network on perpendicular substrate is generally required to couple power to or from the array. In this paper, we will describe two aperture-coupled techniques for coupling microwave power from a linearly tapered slot antenna (LTSA) to a microstrip feed on a perpendicular substrate. In addition, we will present measured results for return losses and radiation patterns.

Hydrogen Carriers for Renewable Microgrid System Applications

Utility-scale energy storage can help improve grid reliability, reduce costs, and promote faster adoption of intermittent sources such as solar and wind. This paper analyzes the technical aspects and economics of standalone microgrids operating on intermittent power combined with hydrogen energy storage. It explores the feasibility of using dibenzyltoluene (DBT) as a liquid organic hydrogen carrier to absorb excess energy during periods of high supply and polymer electrolyte fuel cells to generate electrical energy during periods of low supply. A comparative analysis is conducted on three power demand scenarios (industrial, residential, and office), in conjunction with three alternative energy sources: solar, wind and wind–solar mix. A mixed system of solar and wind energy can maintain an annual average efficiency above 70%, except for residential power demand, which lowered the efficiency to 67%. A balanced combination of wind and solar power was the most cost-effective option. The current levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) for industrial power demand was estimated to 15 ¢/kWh, and it is projected to decrease to 9 ¢/kWh in the future. For residential power demand, the LCOE was 45% higher due to the demand profile. In comparison, battery storage is significantly more expensive than hydrogen storage, even with future cost projections, increasing the LCOE between 60 and 120 ¢/kWh.

IC Ku-band Impatt Amplifier

High efficiency GaAs low-high-low IMPATTs were investigated. Theoretical analyses were employed to establish a design window for the material parameters to maximize microwave performance. Single mesa devices yielded typically 2 to 3 W with 16 to 23% efficiency in waveguide oscillator test circuits. IMPATTs with high reliability Pt/TiW/Pt/Au metallizations were subjected to temperature stress, non-rf bias-temperature stress, and rf bias-temperature stress. Assuming that temperature is the driving force behind the dominant failure mechanism, a mean-time-to-failure considerably greater than 500,000 hours is indicated by the stress tests. A 15 GHz, 4W, 56 dB gain microstrip amplifier was realized using GaAs FETs and IMPATTs. Power combining using a 3 db Lange coupler is employed in the power output stage having an intrinsic power-added efficiency of 15.7%. Overall dc-to-rf efficiency of the amplifier is 10.8%. The amplifier has greater than a 250 MHz, 1 db bandwidth; operates over the 0 deg to 50 C (base plate) temperature range with less than 0.5 db change in the power output; weighs 444 grams; and has a volume of 220 cu cm.
