Physical, anthropometrical, and body composition characteristics of workers at Kennedy Space Center

At the Kennedy Space Center, workers are often exposed to cardiovascular and muscular stress in job-related activities which may require a high level of physical fitness in order to safely complete the work task. Similar tasks will be performed at other launch and landing facilities and in space for the Space Station. One such category includes workers who handle toxic propellants and must wear Self-Contained Atmospheric Protective Ensembles (SCAPE) that can weigh 56 lbs. with the air pack. These suits provide a significant physical challenge to many of the workers in terms of carrying this load while moving about and performing work. Furthermore, under some conditions, there is a significant thermal stress. The physical characteristics of these workers are, therefore, of consequence. The purpose of this study was to analyze the anthropometry, body composition, strength, power, endurance, flexibility, aerobic fitness, and blood variables of a representative sample of male KSC SCAPE workers and to compare them with characteristics of other male workers at KSC (total population N=110). Three separate comparisons were made.

An attribute-driven statistics generator for use in a G.I.S. environment

When performing research using digital geographic information it is often useful to produce quantitative characterizations of the data, usually within some constraints. In the research environment the different combinations of required data and constraints can often become quite complex. This paper describes a technique that gives the researcher a powerful and flexible way to set up many possible combinations of data and constraints without having to perform numerous intermediate steps or create temporary data bands. This method provides an efficient way to produce descriptive statistics in such situations.

Scheduling spacecraft operations

A prototype scheduling system named MAESTRO currently under development is being used to explore possible approaches to the spacecraft operations scheduling problem. Results indicate that the appropriate combination of heuristic and other techniques can provide an acceptable solution to the scheduling problem over a wide range of operational scenarios and management approaches. These can include centralized or distributed instrument or systems control, batch or incremental scheduling, scheduling loose resource envelopes or exact profiles, and scheduling with varying degrees of user intervention. Techniques used within MAESTRO to provide this flexibility and power include constraint propagation mechanisms, multiple asynchronous processes, prioritized transaction-based command management, resource opportunity calculation, user-alterable selection and placement mechanisms, and maintenance of multiple schedules and resource profiles. These techniques and scheduling complexities requiring them are discussed.

The desktop interface in intelligent tutoring systems

The interface between an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) and the person being tutored is critical to the success of the learning process. If the interface to the ITS is confusing or non-supportive of the tutored domain, the effectiveness of the instruction will be diminished or lost entirely. Consequently, the interface to an ITS should be highly integrated with the domain to provide a robust and semantically rich learning environment. In building an ITS for ZetaLISP on a LISP Machine, a Desktop Interface was designed to support a programming learning environment. Using the bitmapped display, windows, and mouse, three desktops were designed to support self-study and tutoring of ZetaLISP. Through organization, well-defined boundaries, and domain support facilities, the desktops provide substantial flexibility and power for the student and facilitate learning ZetaLISP programming while screening the student from the complex LISP Machine environment. The student can concentrate on learning ZetaLISP programming and not on how to operate the interface or a LISP Machine.

User's manual for interactive LINEAR: A FORTRAN program to derive linear aircraft models

An interactive FORTRAN program that provides the user with a powerful and flexible tool for the linearization of aircraft aerodynamic models is documented in this report. The program LINEAR numerically determines a linear system model using nonlinear equations of motion and a user-supplied linear or nonlinear aerodynamic model. The nonlinear equations of motion used are six-degree-of-freedom equations with stationary atmosphere and flat, nonrotating earth assumptions. The system model determined by LINEAR consists of matrices for both the state and observation equations. The program has been designed to allow easy selection and definition of the state, control, and observation variables to be used in a particular model.

Knowledge representation for commonality

Domain-specific knowledge necessary for commonality analysis falls into two general classes: commonality constraints and costing information. Notations for encoding such knowledge should be powerful and flexible and should appeal to the domain expert. The notations employed by the Commonality Analysis Problem Solver (CAPS) analysis tool are described. Examples are given to illustrate the main concepts.

Experiments in cooperative manipulation: A system perspective

In addition to cooperative dynamic control, the system incorporates real time vision feedback, a novel programming technique, and a graphical high level user interface. By focusing on the vertical integration problem, not only these subsystems are examined, but also their interfaces and interactions. The control system implements a multi-level hierarchical structure; the techniques developed for operator input, strategic command, and cooperative dynamic control are presented. At the highest level, a mouse-based graphical user interface allows an operator to direct the activities of the system. Strategic command is provided by a table-driven finite state machine; this methodology provides a powerful yet flexible technique for managing the concurrent system interactions. The dynamic controller implements object impedance control; an extension of Nevill Hogan's impedance control concept to cooperative arm manipulation of a single object. Experimental results are presented, showing the system locating and identifying a moving object catching it, and performing a simple cooperative assembly. Results from dynamic control experiments are also presented, showing the controller's excellent dynamic trajectory tracking performance, while also permitting control of environmental contact force.

Numerical simulation of rotorcraft

The objective of the research is to develop and validate accurate, user-oriented viscous CFD codes (with inviscid options) for three-dimensional, unsteady aerodynamic flows about arbitrary rotorcraft configurations. Unsteady, three-dimensional Euler and Navier-Stokes codes are developed, adapted, and extended to rotor-body combinations. Flow solvers are coupled with zonal grid topologies, including rotating and nonrotating blocks. Special grid clustering and wave-fitting techniques were developed to capture low-level radiating acoustic waves. Significant progress was made in computing the propagation of acoustic waves due to the interaction of a concentrated vortex and a helicopter airfoil. The need for higher-order schemes was firmly established in relatively inexpensive two-dimensional calculations. In three dimensions, the number of grid points required to capture the low-level acoustic waves becomes very large, so that large supercomputer memory becomes essential. Good agreement was obtained between the numerical results obtained with a thin-layer Navier-Stokes code and experimental data from a model rotor. In addition, several nonrotating configurations that are sometimes proposed to simulate rotor blade tips in conventional wind tunnels were examined, and the complex flow around the radical tip shape of the world's fastest helicopter is under investigation. These studies demonstrate the flexibility and power of CFD to gain physical insight, study novel ideas, and examine various possibilities that might be difficult or impossible to set up in physical experiments. As a prelude to studies of rotor-body aerodynamic interactions, a preliminary grid topology and moving-interface strategy were developed. A new Euler/Navier-Stokes code using these techniques computes the vortical wake directly, rather than modeling it, as in most previous rotorcraft studies. Several hover cases were run for conventional and advanced-geometry blades. Numerical schemes using multi-zones and/or adaptive grids appear to be necessary to simulate the complex vortical flows in rotor wakes.

Generation and use of unstructured grids for turbomachinery calculations

A wavefront mesh generator for two dimensional triangular meshes as well as a brief description of the solution method used with these meshes are presented. The interest is in creating meshes for solving the equations of fluid mechanics in complex turbomachinery problems, although the mesh generator and flow solver may be used for a larger variety of applications. The focus is on the flexibility and power of the mesh generation method for triangulating extremely complex geometries and in changing the geometry to create a new mesh. Two turbomachinery applications are presented which take advantage of this method: the analysis of pylon/strut and pylon/OGV interaction in the bypass of a turbofan.

Performance of compact multilayer coated telescopes at soft X-ray/EUV and far ultraviolet wavelengths

Compact soft X-ray/EUV (XUV) and far-ultraviolet (FUV) multilayer coated telescopes have been developed for the study of the solar chromosphere corona and corona/solar wind interface. Because they operate at short wavelengths (between about 40 and 1550 A), the modest apertures of 40 to 127 mm allow observations at very high angular resolution (0.1 to 0.7 arcsec). In addition to permitting traditional normal incidence optical configurations such as Cassegrain, Ritchey-Chretien, and Herschelian to be used at XUV wavelengths, multilayer coatings also allow a narrow wavelength band to be selected for imaging. The resulting telescopes provide a very powerful and flexible diagnostic instrument for the study of both the fine scale structure of the chromosphere/corona interface and the large scale structure of the corona and corona/solar wind interface. A new solar rocket payload, the Multi-Spectral Solar Telescope Array (MSSTA), composed of 17 of these compact telescopes, was developed. This paper reports on the performance of seven MSSTA Ritchey-Chretien telescopes.
