Preferred orientation has been examined in extruded, drawn, and swaged nickel, nickel-20% chromium, and nickel-20% chromium-10% tungsten, with and without a dispersion of 2 vol % of thoria particles. Duplex 100 (in carets) + 111 (in carets) fiber textures were observed in most cases. The 100 (in carets) component was stabilized by the presence of particles and also by the application of intermediate anneals during deformation. These results and the stability of the deformed state in thoriated nickel are attributed largely to the action of the particles in generating homogeneous deformation.
Techniques representing the angular distribution of a particular direction in a crystallographic reference frame or analytical methods were developed. The data required by these techniques for displaying preferred orientation is obtained by measuring the orientation of a large number of crystallites. This may be done visually using etch-pit or Laue techniques which, experimentally, are both tedious and difficult. The intensities of X ray diffraction maxima are proportional to the number of crystallites whose crystallographic plane normals bisect the incident and diffracted beams. Parameters used in calculating powder patterns are also presented.
The report presents the results of a pilot questionnaire utilized at the 1974 Reading, Pennsylvania Air Show to obtain data on pilot procedures and preference in the terminal airspace of uncontrolled airports.
A concise but complete system description for the preferred concept of the Solar Power Satellite System is presented. Significant selection decisions included the following: (1) single crystal silicon solar cells; (2) glass encapsulated solar cell blankets; (3) concentration ratio 1; (4) graphite composite materials for primary structure; (5) electric propulsion for attitude control; (6) klystron RF amplifier tubes for the transmitter; (7) one kilometer diameter transmitter with a design trans mission link output power of 5,000 megawatts; (8) construction in low earth orbit with self-powered transfer of satellite modules to geosynchronous orbit; and (9) two-stage winged fully reusable rocket vehicle for transportation to low earth orbit.
An approach to one-on-one air-combat analysis is described which employs discrete gaming of a parameterized model featuring choice between several closed-loop control policies. A preference-ordering formulation due to Falco is applied to rational choice between outcomes: win, loss, mutual capture, purposeful disengagement, draw. Approximate optimization is provided by an active-cell scheme similar to Falco's obtained by a 'backing up' process similar to that of Kopp. The approach is designed primarily for short-duration duels between craft with large-envelope weaponry. Some illustrative computations are presented for an example modeled using constant-speed vehicles and very rough estimation of energy shifts.
A recursive filter/smoother orbit determination program was developed to refine the ephemerides produced by a batch orbit determination program (e.g., CELEST, GEODYN). The program PREFER can handle a variety of ground and satellite to satellite tracking types as well as satellite altimetry. It was tested on simulated data which contained significant modeling errors and the results clearly demonstrate the superiority of the program compared to batch estimation.
