A Discrete Hankel Transform Approach to Nuclear Data Processing for Fusion Applications

This study introduces advancements to the numerical solutions employed in the processing of nuclear data for fusion applications. It leverages the convolution theorem and Fourier transform techniques to enhance computational efficiency and broaden applicability. Building upon a previously reported discrete Hankel transform approach for Doppler broadening, this work refines the solution of convolution integrals central to these applications. The methodology provides a general and unified framework for evaluating any convolution operation, regardless of whether the underlying problem involves temperature effects in nuclear reactions. The applicability to the nuclear data processing for fusion is demonstrated by deriving the convolution integrals for some of the fusion-related quantities. As before, the convolution operation utilizes a Gaussian-based kernel; however, the discrete Hankel transform of order $𝛼$ = $\frac{1}{2}$ is now applied to the forward Fourier transform of the nonkernel argument, rather than the inverse Fourier transform. This modification eliminates the need for the integration of the nonkernel, cross section–based function, which is a step that posed challenges for certain pointwise cross-section representations. It also removes the requirement for cross-section linearization. Optimized for graphics processing unit architectures, the approach significantly improves computational performance. These advancements are currently under evaluation as the foundation for the next-generation thermonuclear data file processing codes being developed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Isolated data processing modules

This disclosure relates to computer systems that isolate data processing modules and methods of operating the same. In one embodiment of a method, a computer system receives a first data processing request for a first data file. The computer system may determine that a first data type of the first data file is supported by an encapsulated data processing module and determine a first communication protocol from a set of communication protocols that can be used to receive the first data file. The computer system can then receive the first data file from the first storage location in accordance with the first communication protocol and the encapsulated data processing module may be executed to convert the first data file in the first data format into second data in a second data format.

SAR data processing for the Magellan prime mission

The Magellan prime mission involves mapping the planet of Venus once around its rotational axis. The Magellan synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data processing facility processes all SAR data collected by the Magellan spacecraft into image data on an orbit-by-orbit basis. About 1700 million bits of radar data were collected. A complete description of the Magellan SAR Data Processing Facility is provided with emphasis on key design features of the data processors that satisfied the project data processing requirements. A summary of the attained data processing performance is included, as well as a brief discussion of some of the constraints and considerations regarding the applicability of the processors to meeting the data processing goals anticipated for the follow-on mission phases (i.e., cycles II, III, and beyond).

Observational process data analytics using causal inference

Voluminous process data are available with the paradigm shift toward smart manufacturing. However, most historical data are observational, containing noncausal correlations due to confounders and mediators. Estimating causal effects from observational data remains a bottleneck in leveraging them for active applications such as optimization and control. Further, this work aims to introduce a causal modeling framework for analyzing observational process data and extracting quantitative causal information. We demonstrate a real-world application in steel manufacturing where causal inference is used to analyze observational production data and improve the steelmaking process. Additionally, we propose a novel formulation for identifying critical process parameters from observational data, where causal inference is combined with variance-based methods to estimate corresponding risks of interventions to the manufacturing system. The proposed methods are compared with statistical ones to illustrate that causally interpreting statistical correlation leads to problematic results, while the provided workflow generates satisfactory strategies for process improvement.

AIRSAR Web-Based Data Processing

The AIRSAR automated, Web-based data processing and distribution system is an integrated, end-to-end synthetic aperture radar (SAR) processing system. Designed to function under limited resources and rigorous demands, AIRSAR eliminates operational errors and provides for paperless archiving. Also, it provides a yearly tune-up of the processor on flight missions, as well as quality assurance with new radar modes and anomalous data compensation. The software fully integrates a Web-based SAR data-user request subsystem, a data processing system to automatically generate co-registered multi-frequency images from both polarimetric and interferometric data collection modes in 80/40/20 MHz bandwidth, an automated verification quality assurance subsystem, and an automatic data distribution system for use in the remote-sensor community. Features include Survey Automation Processing in which the software can automatically generate a quick-look image from an entire 90-GB SAR raw data 32-MB/s tape overnight without operator intervention. Also, the software allows product ordering and distribution via a Web-based user request system. To make AIRSAR more user friendly, it has been designed to let users search by entering the desired mission flight line (Missions Searching), or to search for any mission flight line by entering the desired latitude and longitude (Map Searching). For precision image automation processing, the software generates the products according to each data processing request stored in the database via a Queue management system. Users are able to have automatic generation of coregistered multi-frequency images as the software generates polarimetric and/or interferometric SAR data processing in ground and/or slant projection according to user processing requests for one of the 12 radar modes.

Some procedures for computerized electronic data processing of absorption measurements from artificial earth satellites

The processing of data obtained from solar absorption radiation measurements is discussed. The position of the satellite was obtained by numerical integration of the differential equations of motion using initial conditions. The position of the sun was calculated as a function of time, and the tangential elevation was determined approximately from the positions of the satellite and the sun. The coefficients of an approximation formula and of a data smoothing process were determined, and the inversion of an Abel integral equation is solved analytically.

Microbial Optical Data Processing: A Key Step in the Metabolic Assessment of Lunar Explorer Instrument for Space Biology Applications (LEIA) and Biosentinel’s Payload Data

The BioSensor payload platform on BioSentinel and LEIA autonomously collects optical data from microbial model organisms in liquid culture. The BioSensor is designed to monitor metabolic activity using absorbance measurements of cell density and alamarBlue, a readily available colorimetric redox indicator dye. BioSentinel, a pioneering NASA CubeSat, uses yeast to study deep space radiation. LEIA investigates radiation and lunar gravity response. The experimental setup includes 16 wells equipped with three LEDs (570, 630, and 850 nm) and their corresponding photodetectors. One well is a calibration control without biology while the rest have desiccated cultures. Autonomous rehydration initiates the experiment. Data from the BioSensor are received from the flight and ground units, enabling comparison to uncover location-based metabolic rate variations. This study presents a Python Jupyter notebook developed for efficient data processing of multiple CSV files containing date and time columns, temperature, and well illumination data. It offers a user-friendly interface while maintaining computational power, automatically recognizing and iteratively processing data files in a user-input path. A Hampel filter with a short window eliminates outlier artifacts from sensor dropout. Because absorbance is a relative measurement, conversion from raw illumination requires defining a “blank” value, so the first data points are averaged to provide the necessary denominator. A cube-root function correction mitigates undesired drift caused by air pockets during the fluidic card filling phase, maintaining optical path length consistency. Beer-Lambert's law is applied to further convert absorbance values to cell and dye form concentrations, the desired science parameters. The processed data are saved and visualized as SVG plots. Future plans include extracting specific science parameters from the processed data like growth rate and metabolic rate, and identification of features corresponding to metabolic and phenotypic shifts such as starvation, shifts from aerobic to anaerobic growth, and osmotic stresses.

System design package for the solar heating and cooling central data processing system

The central data processing system provides the resources required to assess the performance of solar heating and cooling systems installed at remote sites. These sites consist of residential, commercial, government, and educational types of buildings, and the solar heating and cooling systems can be hot-water, space heating, cooling, and combinations of these. The instrumentation data associated with these systems will vary according to the application and must be collected, processed, and presented in a form which supports continuity of performance evaluation across all applications. Overall software system requirements were established for use in the central integration facility which transforms raw data collected at remote sites into performance evaluation information for assessing the performance of solar heating and cooling systems.

Application of an optimal filter for inflatable sphere data processing

The improvement in the sphere data processing, concerning the signal to noise ratio, is discussed. Frequency analysis of the radar data is effectuated. It reveals a specific frequency component in the radar angle error, which may originate from the tracking radar mechanism itself. An optimal (Wiener) filter is applied to the radar data in order to suppress the systematic angular error components selectively. Using this technique, a significant improvement in the signal to noise ratio is achieved. The resolution of sphere measurements, previously limited by the length of the polynomial filter in the sphere data processing algorithm, is improved.

Geometric conditions for saturating the data processing inequality

Abstract The data processing inequality (DPI) is a scalar inequality satisfied by distinguishability measures on density matrices. For some distinguishability measures, saturation of the scalar DPI implies an operator equation relating the arguments of the measure. These results are typically derived using functional analytic techniques. In a complementary approach, we use geometric techniques to derive a formula that gives an operator equation from DPI saturation for any distinguishability measure; moreover, for a broad class of distinguishability measures, the derived operator equation is sufficient to imply saturation as well. Our operator equation coincides with known results for the sandwiched Rényi relative entropies, and gives new results for α - z Rényi relative entropies and a family of of quantum f -divergences, which we compute explicitly.
