Multiscale simulations of novel lithium electrolytes for improved processability and performance of solid-state batteries

In FY23, we performed atomic-scale simulations and developed analysis tools to understand the dynamic behaviors of Li ions and cation/anion components and predict mechanical properties in a new class of Li-ion solid electrolytes (SEs) developed by TRINA. Specifically, we revealed the transport characteristics of Li ions in anion sublattice, rotational dynamics of anion and cation components, and the effect of cation and anion on Li transport as well as interactions between cation and anions. The results imply that the transport characteristics in these soft materials may be affected by processing conditions significantly, which will offer the necessary insights to optimize these future SEs and accelerate the deployment of practical and easily processable Solid-state batteries (SSBs).

Supply Chain Improvement & Process Modification Printing in Tantalum

Refractory metals and alloys are distinguished by their exceptional thermophysical properties, including high melting and recrystallization temperatures, remarkable strength, and superior corrosion resistance, all of which surpass those of conventional alloys. These unique characteristics position these materials as ideal candidates for applications in extreme environments. However, their potential has historically been underexploited due to limitations in processing capabilities. Recent advancements in melt-based additive manufacturing (AM) processes present opportunities to overcome these limitations. Previous Sandia studies have successfully characterized pure tantalum produced through laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) externally at Castheon, revealing that LPBF-fabricated tantalum exhibits properties exceeding those of wrought materials. This promising outcome sparked increased interest in the internal additive manufacturing of tantalum. This project aimed to establish the new SLM 280 machine at SNL-CA to successfully produce the first tantalum prints and characterize the material. Additionally, efforts were made to enhance the machine by incorporating Inert equipment to minimize oxygen content within the print volume. The results demonstrated that internally manufactured LPBF tantalum not only met but exceeded the standards of wrought materials, even prior to the integration of the additional equipment. The inert equipment is almost successfully integrated and ready for use. Future research should focus on understanding how this equipment influences the process-structure-property relationships, as well as further optimizing the printing parameters for tantalum.

Fibers of newly developed refractory ceramics produced by improved process

Rods of refractory ceramic material and glasses having relatively high fusion temperatures and tensile strengths are converted to fiber by subjecting these rods to alternate fusion and gas-jet bursts. The refractory, high tensile strength fibers produced are combined with suitable binder to produce heat-resistant fabrics and rigid structures.

Improved process for making thin-film sodium niobate capacitors

Sodium niobate, formed by high vacuum, flash, and reactive evaporations, has a high dielectric constant and is used as a thin film dielectric in microelectronic capacitors. High purity films are formed from relatively inexpensive, pure starting materials. Crystalline sodium niobate films can be formed on amorphous or crystalline materials.

Improved process for epitaxial deposition of silicon on prediffused substrates

Process for fabricating integrated circuits uniformly deposits silicon epitaxially on prediffused substrates without affecting the sublayer diffusion pattern. Two silicon deposits from different sources, and deposited at different temperatures, protect the sublayer pattern from the silicon tetrachloride reaction.

Improved process for synthesizing anilinosilane compounds

New process gives good yields of anilinosilane compounds that can be readily isolated in a high state of purity. S-collidine is used as an HCl acceptor. Silane compounds can be melt-condensed with aromatic diols to provide high molecular weight polyaryloxysilane materials that are of importance in polymer technology.

Data processing improvements for the Skylab S-191 EREP spectrometer

The characteristics of the S-191 spectrometer (filter wheel infrared spectrometer) are discussed. Inherent deficiencies in previous spectrometers are described and the techniques for correcting the deficiencies are explained. The radiance errors caused by error in wavelength are identified and the effects on the accuracy of the spectrometer are described. It is stated that the most important source of error in the S-191 spectrometer is off-band radiation in which the detected radiation is far from the wavelength which is expected to be detected by the sensor at that particular time. A numerical analysis of the effects of off-band radiation is developed.

Improved process control for VMOS FET's

Method is applied in middle of fabrication process: (a) after mask region is formed, diffused-boron region is etched; (b) etching is left incomplete for ion implantation; (c) boron ions are implanted into region to define accurately crucial geometry of V-groove; (d) groove is etched to completion, forming two well-defined diffusion regions that serve as source and drain of transistor. Remaining process is conventional.

An improved process for preparing Tris(N-methylamino)methylsilane monomer for use in producing silicon carbide-silicon nitride fibers

A technique is described for the preparation of tris(N-methylamino)methylsilane by a process which may be used for large-scale production. The steps include synthesis, filtration to remove the salt byproduct, and distillation to remove the product from the reaction mixture under anhydrous conditions. Tris(N-methylamino)methylsilane is a precursor used to prepare silicon carbide-silicon nitride fibers that have been shown to have high tensile modulus (29 x 10 to the 6th psi for 0.4 mil diameter), high tensile strength (10.5 x 10 to the 4th psi), and high electrical resistivity (7 x 10 to the 8th ohm-cm).

An improved processible acetylene-terminated polyimide for composites

The newest member of a family of thermosetting acetylene-substituted polyimide oligomers is HR600P. This oligomer is the isoimide version of the oligomer known as HR600P and Thermid 600. Although both types of material yield the same heat resistant end products after cure, HR600P has much superior processing characteristics. This attributed to its lower melting temperature (160 + or - 10 C, 320 + or - 20 F) in contrast to 202 C (396 F) for Thermid MC-600, its longer gel time at its processing temperature (16 to 30 minutes bvs 3 minutes), and its excellent solubility in low boiling solvents such as tetrahydrofuran, glymes, or 4:1 methyl ethyl ketone/toluene mixtures. These advantages provide more acceptable coating and impregnation procedures, allow for more complete removal at lower temperatures, provide a longer pot life or working time, and allow composite structure fabrication in conventional autoclaves used for epoxy composite curing. The excellent processing characteristics of HR600P allow its use in large area laminated structures, structural composites, and molding compositions.

Retinex Image Processing: Improved Fidelity to Direct Visual Observation

Recorded color images differ from direct human viewing by the lack of dynamic range compression and color constancy. Research is summarized which develops the center/surround retinex concept originated by Edwin Land through a single scale design to a multi-scale design with color restoration (MSRCR). The MSRCR synthesizes dynamic range compression, color constancy, and color rendition and, thereby, approaches fidelity to direct observation.
