Effects of processing parameters on the morphologies of complex sesquioxide thin films

Controlling and predicting the morphology of lanthanide sesquioxides in thin film form is vital to their use in current applications. In the present study, single and codeposited Sm2O3, Er2O3, and Lu2O3 thin films were grown on yttria-stabilized zirconia (8%) substrates by radio frequency magnetron sputtering at room temperature and 500 °C. The effect of two different substrate temperatures and altering the oxide cation on the structural and morphological properties of the films was analyzed. The thin films were characterized by profilometry, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and x-ray diffraction. The single-component Lu2O3 and Sm2O3 films obtained were of the cubic phase, and the Er2O3 was a mix of cubic and monoclinic phases. It was observed for both the Er2O3 and Lu2O3 films that increasing the substrate temperature to 500 °C resulted in larger grained polycrystalline films. In contrast, large grained polycrystalline films were obtained at both room temperature and 500 °C for Sm2O3 and uneven granularity increased as temperature increased. Codeposition of Lu2O3 and Sm2O3, and Lu2O3 and Er2O3 resulted in a cubic bixbyite phase (the C phase of the lanthanide sesquioxide) solid solution. It was observed that the structure and morphology of the films can be controlled by manipulating deposition parameters. Both substrate temperature and altering the oxide cation contributed to changes in crystallinity and grain structure, which can modify the chemical and physical properties of the films for their applications.

Documenting Development of Processing Parameters for Fabrication of Doped and Undoped Fuel Pellets (Summary Report)

Early FY20 restructuring of the TREAT work package FT-20LA02020608 Enriched Fuel Fabrication for Safety Testing, and associated deliverables necessitated the rescoping of existing LANL deliverables. This rescoped carryover report summarizes work to date on doped and undpoped fuel pellet fabrication development of proceeding parameters. This summary also includes a status update of intended research activities that fall under the activity associated with this work package.

Advanced Materials & Manufacturing Technology (AMMT): Development of Additive Manufacturing Agnostic Process Parameter Procedure, 316H Stainless Steel Readiness Level Data Sets, and Machine Maintenance Plan

The University of California, Davis is involved in a project to deploy and enhance an artificial intelligence (AI) system for predicting and preventing plasma disruptions on the DIII D tokamak, under the funding from Department of Energy DE-SC0023500 (title: AI/Deep Learning FRNN Software for Prediction & Real-Time Control of DIII-D Plasma Control System (PCS)). The overarching goal is to demonstrate that real-time, AI-guided intervention can proactively modify the plasma state to avoid or mitigate disruptions—a critical challenge for the future of fusion energy.

Effect of processing parameters on the characteristics of high-Tc superconductor YBa2Cu3Oy

SEM, thermogravimetric analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, and measurements of electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility, are presently used to characterize the influence of sintering temperature, sintering and annealing atmospheres, and quench-rate on the properties of the YBa2Cu3Oy superconducting oxide. It is established that annealing in oxygen, together with slow cooling rates, are required for preparation of high-Tc superconductors with sharp transitions; rapid quenching from high temperature does not yield good superconductors, due to low oxygen content.

Dimensionless Numbers Expressed in Terms of Common CVD Process Parameters

A variety of dimensionless numbers related to momentum and heat transfer are useful in Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) analysis. These numbers are not traditionally calculated by directly using reactor operating parameters, such as temperature and pressure. In this paper, these numbers have been expressed in a form that explicitly shows their dependence upon the carrier gas, reactor geometry, and reactor operation conditions. These expressions were derived for both monatomic and diatomic gases using estimation techniques for viscosity, thermal conductivity, and heat capacity. Values calculated from these expressions compared well to previously published values. These expressions provide a relatively quick method for predicting changes in the flow patterns resulting from changes in the reactor operating conditions.
