Improving Fission Products at CARIBU: Near Field Detection (Q4/FY23 Quarterly Progress Report)

We have addressed another round of referees’ comments and resubmitted our mass measurement of the isomer and ground state of 128 Sb to Phys. Rev. Letters. One of the referees recommended publication so we anticipate this will be the last round with the referees. This paper focuses on the astrophysical implications of our measurement, as we can directly measure the excitation energy of the isomer along with other observables like the isomer to ground state ratio produced in the fission of 252 Cf. With our summer student Asha, we were able to determine that there was an error in our Gas Counter simulations, which has been corrected and is now implemented in our 111 Ag simulations. This report describes the progress on this effort from July until August 2023. We have paused the work on this project in the last 7 Weeks while the PI was on leave. We are resuming the work on this effort in early October.

Progress Report on SFR Metallic Fuel Data Qualification

This report summarizes the progress of SFR metallic fuel qualification related activities, which are focused on providing quality assurance relevant information applicable to experiments irradiated during the Integral Fast Reactor (IFR) program. An overview of the metallic fuel performance data and the associated databases, including the EBR-II Fuels Irradiation & Physics Database (FIPD), Out-of-Pile Transient Database (OPTD), and TREAT Experimental Relational Database (TREXR) is included. The legacy data in the databases, including as-built, post-irradiation examination (PIE), operating parameters, and out-of-pile experiment post-test data are introduced. The SFR metallic fuel Quality Assurance Program Plan (QAPP) and its implementation to qualify these legacy data is described in detail. Important PIE data QA documents and the specifications of seven types of PIE measurements (contact profilometry, laser profilometry, neutron radiography, gamma scan, fission gas release fission gas chemistry, and metallography) are provided. Examples of the implementation of the QAPP to qualify each of those types of PIE data are provided.

Design of Turbomachinery Blading in Three-Dimensional Flow By the Circulation Method: A Progress Report

In this paper, we report on the progress of the further development and application of an analytical theory for the design of turbomachinery blading in three-dimensional flow. After a section describing the recent development of the theory, we discuss the various applications including the investigations of the design of radial inflow turbines. Numerical examples are also presented to illustrate the application of the theory to the design of a free vortex fan, an axial turbine rotor, a free vortex compressor stage for low and high Mach numbers, a non-free vortex fan with trailing vortex sheets, and a counter-rotating propeller in the limit of a large number of blades. Further possible applications of the theory to the design of other aero- and hydrodynamic devices are discussed.

Far infrared interferometer technology development: a progress report

We report on the progress of developing a cryogenic delay line and integrated optics components. These are some of the critical components needed to enable farm, direct detection, interferometers. To achieve background limited performance in the 40 to 400 pm region, the interferometer optics and delay line must be cooled to near liquid Helium temperatures. The cryogenic delay line design incorporates a number of novel features and has been tested and characterized at liquid nitrogen temperatures. The integrated optics effort has focused on producing single mode spatial filters and beam combiners.

Fusion Materials Semiannual Progress Report for the Period Ending December 31, 2022

This is the seventy-third in a series of semiannual technical progress reports on fusion materials science activity supported by the Fusion Energy Sciences Program of the U.S. Department of Energy. It covers the period ending December 31, 2022. This report focuses on research addressing the effects on materials properties and performance of exposure to the neutronic, thermal and chemical environments anticipated in the chambers of fusion experiments and energy systems. This research is a major element of the national effort to establish the materials knowledge base for an economically and environmentally attractive fusion energy source. Research activities on issues related to the interaction of materials with plasmas are reported separately. The results reported are the products of a national effort involving a number of national laboratories and universities. A large fraction of this work, particularly in relation to fission reactor irradiations, is carried out collaboratively with partners in Japan, Russia, and the European Union. The purpose of this series of reports is to provide a working technical record for the use of program participants, and to provide a means of communicating the efforts of fusion materials scientists to the broader fusion community, both nationally and worldwide. This report has been compiled by Stephanie Melton, Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Her efforts, and the efforts of the many persons who made technical contributions, are gratefully acknowledged.

Progress Report for the Pathfinder Project: A Laser-Based / Fiber Optic IAEA Seal That Implements Spectral Interferometry

This is the first progress report for the Laser / Fiber-Optic Based IAEA Seal. This seal implements spectral interferometry, which is crucial for its resilience to tampering. Indeed, based on our understanding of telecommunications-based fiber optic technology, it is essentially impossible to tamper with the fiber without detection either immediately (with an active system) or subsequently (with a passive system).

Improving Fission Products at CARIBU: Near Field Detection (Q2/FY24 Quarterly Progress Report)

We continue to make progress in the analysis of 111 Ag decay data to determine gamma-ray intensities with the aim of improving these intensities to below 1% precision. The correctness of detection efficiencies is integral to obtaining accurate and precise results. While Geant4 provides us with efficiencies for detection of a coincidence event of a beta-particle with a 96, 245, or 342 gamma-ray, as outlined in Figure 1, it is important that we validate these results with the efficiencies obtained from the experimental decay data.
