Evaluation of the suitability of Skylab data for the purpose of petroleum exploration

The author has identified the following significant results. Comparisons of the various photographic bands of Skylab imagery indicate that, overall, standard color (particularly S190B) is the most valuable for geological purposes. Detailed examination of all bands indicates that as with ERTS imagery each band contains useful information that is unique to it. The results of geological interpretations based on ERTS and Skylab imagery are strikingly similar. It appears that more information can be extracted from a single Skylab overpass than a single ERTS overpass, but that with repeated passes the lower resolution ERTS imagery may yield information comparable to that contained in S190B imagery. Comparison of Skylab photography to high altitude aircraft photography suggests that there are distinct advantages to using Skylab imagery for regional geologic interpretations. This is primarily because of the synoptic view provided by the space acquired imagery allows and encourages integration of regional geologic features.

General Purpose Computer (GPC) to GPC systems interface description

The General Purpose Computer (GPC) 'subsystem' of the Orbiter Data Processing System was described. Two interface areas are discussed. One is the area of GPC intraconnections and intracommunications involving the hardware/software interface between the Central Processing Unit (CPU) and the Input/Output Processor (IOP). The other is the area of GPC interconnections and intercommunications and involves the hardware/software interface between the five Orbiter GPC's. Based on the detailed GPC interface given, it is felt that the basic CPU to IOP interface and the GPC to GPC interface have the potential for trouble free operation. However, due to the complexity of the interface and the criticality of GPC synchronization to overall avionics performance, the GPC to GPC interface should be carefully evaluated when attempting to resolve test anomalies that may involve GPC timing and synchronization errors.

Multi purpose display panel

The multi purpose panel (MPP) project was undertaken to demonstrate the feasibility of producing a control signal which could be time shared among several subsystems and which would permit rapid and inexpensive modification of control panel functions. It is intended to bridge the gap between Multifunction Display Systems, which offer excellent display flexibility but present man-machine interface problems, and dedicated control panels, which offer no flexibility. A control panel was developed with programmable displays located near enough to control and display components to provide an acceptable man-machine interface.

General purpose film plotting system

The general purpose film plotting system which is a plot program design to handle a majority of the data tape formats presently available under OS/360 was discussed. The convenience of this program is due to the fact that the user merely describes the format of his data set and the type of data plots he desires. It processes the input data according to the given specifications. The output is generated on a tape which yields data plots when processed by the selected plotter. A summary of each job is produced on the printer.

An application of the Multi-Purpose System Simulation /MPSS/ model to the Monitor and Control Display System /MACDS/ at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration /NASA/ Goddard Space Flight Center /GSFC/

The Multi-Purpose System Simulator (MPSS) model was used to investigate the current and projected performance of the Monitor and Control Display System (MACDS) at the Goddard Space Flight Center in processing and displaying launch data adequately. MACDS consists of two interconnected mini-computers with associated terminal input and display output equipment and a disk-stored data base. Three configurations of MACDS were evaluated via MPSS and their performances ascertained. First, the current version of MACDS was found inadequate to handle projected launch data loads because of unacceptable data backlogging. Second, the current MACDS hardware with enhanced software was capable of handling two times the anticipated data loads. Third, an up-graded hardware ensemble combined with the enhanced software was capable of handling four times the anticipated data loads.

A special purpose symbolic manipulation program for the derivation of the equations of motion for large flexible structures

This paper outlines a computer program especially tailored to the task of deriving explicit equations of motion for structures with point-connected substructures. The special purpose program is written in FORTRAN and is designed for performing the specific algebraic operations encountered in the derivation of explicit equations of motion. The derivation is by the Lagrangian approach. Using an orderly kinematical procedure and a discretization and/or truncation scheme, it is possible to write the kinetic and potential energy of each substructure in a compact vector-matrix form. Then, if each element of the matrices and vectors encountered in the kinetic and potential energy is a known algebraic expression, the computer program performs the necessary operations to evaluate the kinetic and potential energy of the system explicitly. Lagrange's equations for small motions about equilibrium can be deduced directly from the explicit form of the system kinetic and potential energy.

Human factors in equipment development for the Space Shuttle - A study of the general purpose work station

The results of a human factors test to assay the suitability of a prototype general purpose work station (GPWS) for biosciences experiments on the fourth Spacelab mission are reported. The evaluation was performed to verify that users of the GPWS would optimally interact with the GPWS configuration and instrumentation. Six male subjects sat on stools positioned to allow assimilation of the zero-g body posture. Trials were run concerning the operator viewing angles facing the console, the console color, procedures for injecting rates with dye, a rat blood cell count, mouse dissection, squirrel monkey transfer, and plant fixation. The trials were run for several days in order to gage improvement or poor performance conditions. Better access to the work surface was found necessary, together with more distinct and better located LEDs, better access window latches, clearer sequences on control buttons, color-coded sequential buttons, and provisions made for an intercom system when operators of the GPWS work in tandem.

ADS-1 - A new general-purpose optimization program

Today, numerous programs are available which may be coupled with finite element analysis or other analysis techniques to perform the optimization function in the solution of structural synthesis problems. However, most of these codes include only one or two algorithms and many have not been tested on problems of significant size and complexity. There is, therefore, a need for a reliable, general-purpose, publicly available code, containing a variety of modern algorithms for use in structural synthesis as well as general engineering design. The ADS-1 program (Automated Design Synthesis: Version 1) was written in response to this need. The present investigation has the objective to present the capabilities of the ADS program and to demonstrate its application to structural synthesis. The ADS program solves the general nonlinear constrained optimization problem in the standard form. At each level of the optimization process, several options are available.

Characterization of the general purpose research furnace for low-G directional solidification experiments

Preliminary tests have shown that it is possible to control the temperature settings in NASA's General Purpose Research Furnace in such a manner as to obtain a constant rate of movement of a high temperature isotherm down the length of the furnace. These tests also showed that a temperature gradient on the order of 40 deg cm could be obtained in the furnace while moving the particular isotherm of interest, i.e., 900 C. This provides the possibility of performing directional solidification experiments in the furnace on a MEA flight in the low gravity environment provided by the Shuttle. A functional dependency of growth rate on perturbations during the the growth has been derived and shows the importance of avoiding non-steady growth rates and changing temperature gradients.
