The Two-sided Jet Structures of NGC 1052 at Scales from 300 to 4 × 10{sup 7} Schwarzschild Radii

We investigated the jet width profile with distance along the jet in the nearby radio galaxy NGC 1052 at radial distances between ∼300 and 4 × 10{sup 7} Schwarzschild radii (R {sub S}) from the central engine on both their approaching and receding jet sides. The width of jets was measured in images obtained with the Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) Space Observatory Programme, the Very Long Baseline Array, and the Very Large Array. The jet width profiles of receding jets are apparently consistent with those of approaching jets throughout the measuring distance ranges, indicating symmetry at least up to the sphere of gravitational influence of the central black hole. The power-law index a of the jet width profile (w {sub jet} ∝ r {sup a}, where w {sub jet} is the jet width, r is the distance from the central engine in the unit of R {sub S}) apparently shows a transition from a ∼ 0 to a ∼ 1, i.e., the cylindrical-to-conical jet structures, at a distance of ∼1 × 10{sup 4} R {sub S}. The cylindrical jet shape at small distances is reminiscent of the innermost jets in 3C 84. Both the central engines of NGC 1052 and 3C 84 are surrounded by dense material, part of which is ionized and causes heavy free–free absorption.

Candidate Brown-dwarf Microlensing Events with Very Short Timescales and Small Angular Einstein Radii

Short-timescale microlensing events are likely to be produced by substellar brown dwarfs (BDs), but it is difficult to securely identify BD lenses based on only event timescales t{sub E} because short-timescale events can also be produced by stellar lenses with high relative lens-source proper motions. In this paper, we report three strong candidate BD-lens events found from the search for lensing events not only with short timescales (t{sub E}≲6 days) but also with very small angular Einstein radii (θ{sub E}≲0.05 mas) among the events that have been found in the 2016–2019 observing seasons. These events include MOA-2017-BLG-147, MOA-2017-BLG-241, and MOA-2019-BLG-256, in which the first two events are produced by single lenses and the last event is produced by a binary lens. From the Monte Carlo simulations of Galactic events conducted with the combined t{sub E} and θ{sub E} constraint, it is estimated that the lens masses of the individual events are 0.051{sub −0.027}{sup +0.100} M{sub ⊙}, 0.044{sub −0.023}{sup +0.090} M{sub ⊙}, and 0.046{sub −0.023}{sup +0.067} M{sub ⊙}/0.038{sub −0.019}{sup +0.056} M{sub ⊙} and the probability of the lens mass smaller than the lower limit of stars is ∼80% for all events. We point out that routine lens mass measurements of short-timescale lensing events require survey-mode space-based observations.

Internal machining accomplished at constant radii

Device machines fluid passages in workpieces at constant radii through two adjacent surfaces that are at included angles up to approximately 120 degrees. This technique has been used extensively in fabricating engine parts where close control of fluid flow is a requirement.
