Residents-as-Teachers Curriculum for Radiation Oncology: A Targeted Needs Assessment

Achieving competency as educators is increasingly recognized as a critical part of residents’ training in graduate medical education across specialties. In addition to teaching medical students, radiation oncology residents often play a vital role in peer and interprofessional education. We conducted a survey to identify the needs of radiation oncology residents for developing skills in teaching.

Robotic automation of maintenance work in nuclear power plants a cross-sector survey and roadmap

Nuclear power plants face increasing cost pressures, workforce constraints (aging workforce and skilled labor shortages), and safety requirements that are accelerating interest in robotic systems for inspection and maintenance. We conducted semi-structured interviews with personnel from seven U.S. nuclear utilities and compared deployment models, operational use cases, and integration practices with those reported by participants in the oil, gas, and petrochemical sector. In nuclear plants, robotic use remains concentrated in inspection—particularly indoor unmanned aerial vehicles and submersible remotely operated vehicles—with limited application to physical maintenance tasks. Reported near-term value includes reduced radiological and industrial risk, reduced outage labor, and improved data for planning and condition assessment. Key barriers include integration and data-interoperability constraints, operator qualification requirements, cybersecurity review burden, and difficulty demonstrating reliability in plant-representative environments. Cross-sector benchmarking highlights organizational and deployment practices that may help nuclear plants scale from pilots to routine use. We propose a deployment-oriented roadmap emphasizing modular payload strategies, representative qualification pathways and testing environments, and improved data governance to support safe and economically justified expansion of robotics in operating nuclear power plants.

The “Brookhaven Brassie” and the Response to the Three Mile Island Accident

In the mid-1970s, American civil defense authorities became increasingly concerned with the potential threat of fission reactor accidents. Research from the Defense Civil Preparedness Agency began to be aimed not just at the ever-present threat of nuclear warfare, but also peacetime emergencies as part of a "dual use" philosophy. The Brookhaven National Laboratory received funding to create a prototype radioiodine air sampling system, with multiple publications detailing the creation of the air sampler itself and a special CD V-700 survey meter that accompanied it. In late March 1979, the system found its first operational employment at the reactor accident at Three Mile Island, Pennsylvania. Despite successful use and further study, the BNL Air Sampler was not widely fielded by the federal government. However, lessons learned from its employment and development may be applicable to contemporary radiological emergency response.

Final Status of HEPA Filter 10-Year Lifetime Evaluation

High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters are widely employed by nuclear facilities to remove radiological particulate matter from their effluent exhaust streams. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationships between the 10-year HEPA filter lifespan and its other performance indicators. The 10-year-long endeavor to collect and analyze data regarding the lifetime of HEPA filters at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory began in 2010. Forty-nine HEPA filters were selected and have been surveyed and analyzed at least annually to verify compliance with permit conditions. The study suggests the frequency of filter replacement should be based on the actual operational requirements, such as fume hood face velocity and/or efficiency test results, instead of on the prescribed filter “age limit” of 10 years from the date of manufacture (e.g., birth date) when operating under dry conditions. Over the past decade, the study has now been completed, and all forty-nine HEPA filters have been replaced, due to either technical issues listed in this report, or the previously recommended filter “age limit” of 10 years.

MARSAME Radiological Release Report for Weapons Facility Operations #5 Decontamination and Demolition Project

Environmental Protection and Compliance, Environmental Stewardship (EPC-ES) has identified materials associated with Weapons Facility Operations (WFO) #5 that meet the criteria for unrestricted release to the public under Department of Energy (DOE) Order 458.1, Radiation Protection for the Public and the Environment (DOE, 2020) and materials in one building that did not meet the criteria for unrestricted release and are to be treated as low level waste (LLW). These conclusions are based on the known history of the area combined with radiation survey data data collected in 2022 and 2023. The findings are consistent with DOE Order 458.1 and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Functional Series Document EPC-ES-FSD-004, Environmental Radiation Protection (LANL, 2021). Sampling and data analysis, as described in this report, were sufficient to meet measurement quality objectives (MQOs) under the Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Assessment of Materials and Equipment (MARSAME) manual (NUREG, 2009) and LANL procedures (LANL, 2020). Final approvals for waste disposition will come from LANL’s Waste Management Program.

Radiological HEPA Filter 10-year Lifetime Evaluation in Research Facilities

High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters are widely employed by nuclear facilities to remove radiological particulate matter from their effluent exhaust streams. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationships between the 10-year HEPA filter lifetime deployment and its other performance indicators. This 10-year-long endeavor to collect and analyze data regarding the service life of HEPA filters at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory began in 2010. A set of HEPA filters were selected and have been surveyed and analyzed at least annually to verify compliance with permit conditions. The study suggests the frequency of filter replacement should be based on the actual operational requirements, such as fume hood face velocity and/or efficiency test results, instead of on the prescribed filter “age limit” of 10 years from the date of manufacture (e.g., birth date) when operating under dry conditions. The study has now been completed, and over the past decade all the HEPA filters have been replaced, due to either technical issues as listed in this report or the previously recommended filter “age limit” of 10 years as prescribed by the oversight bodies. Experimentally determined failure rates are also determined from the data set and can be used to estimate the chances of HEPA filters surviving 15, 20, or even 30 years.

Refinement and Validation of the Head and Neck Lymphedema and Fibrosis Symptom Inventory

Lymphedema and fibrosis (LEF) are common yet overlooked late effects of head and neck cancer and its therapy. Lack of reliable and valid measures of head and neck LEF is a critical barrier to the timely identification and management of head and neck LEF. To fill this gap, we developed and pilot tested a 64-item patient-reported outcome measure ( Lymphedema Symptom Intensity and Distress Survey-Head and Neck, LSIDS-H&N). This article aims to report the process of further validation and refinement of the tool.
