Early Development of the First Earth Venture Mission: How CYGNSS Is Using Engineering Models to Validate the Design

In response to the recommendations made in the National Research Council' s Ear th Science and Applications 2007 Decadal Sur vey, NASA has initiated the Ear th Venture line of mission oppor tunities. The fir st orbital mission chosen for this competitively selected, cost and schedule constrained, Pr incipal Investigator -led oppor tunity is the CYclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS). The goal of CYGNSS is to understand the coupling between ocean sur face proper ties, moist atmospher ic thermodynamics, radiation, and convective dynamics in the inner core of a tropical cyclone. The CYGNSS mission is compr ised of eight Low Ear th Obser ving (LEO) micr osatellites that use GPS bi-static scatterometry to measure ocean sur face winds.

Light scattering by V 4 O 7 film across the metal–insulator transition

The experimental study of the angle-resolved hemispherical light scattering by V 4 O 7 film within a broad temperature range across metal–insulator transition reveals complex structural reorganization of the film deposited on the c-cut sapphire crystal. The bidirectional scattering distribution function and the surface autocorrelation function were obtained from scattering data to visualize statistics of the spatially resolved contributions of optical inhomogeneities in normal and lateral directions to the surface. The measurements reveal an anisotropic surface roughness distribution due to the twinned domain structure, with significant anisotropy changes across the phase transition. The V 4 O 7 film deposited on sapphire leads to a polydomain structure, minimizing elastic strain energy with distinct multiscale distributions of surface domains. Near T c , the material shows the lowest roughness but the highest lateral disorder of the surface.

Detecting ocean surface wind using the TRMM precipitation radar

Although designed specifically for the measurement of precipitation in the atmosphere, the Precipitation Radar (PR) onboard the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite alsomeasures the normalized radar cross-section at the Earth's surface. As such, this instrument providesan interesting opportunity to explore an alternative radar configuration in the satellite remote sensingnf ocean winds. In particular, it can measure the strength of the ocean winds in relatively higherspatial resolution as compared to the conventional scatterometer systems presently in use. The addition of wind sensing capability to precipitation radar also complements its rain profiling capabilitynicely and allows coincident wind and rain measurements. In this paper, we discuss the new ocean wind algorithm developed specifically for TRMM PR using maximum likelihood estimation. A uniquefeature of this wind algorithm is its capability to incorporate measurement sensitivity and noiseinformation consistently in both the along-track and cross-track directions. This PR wind algorithm hasbeen tested using data from the TRMM Microwave Imager (TMI) and NASA QuikSCAT scatterometer.Excellent agreement on the retrieved wind strengths is achieved among three sensors.

Determining Wind Speed and Direction with Ocean Reflected GPS Signals

The power received by a GPS receiver located on an airplane flying over the ocean and collecting the GPS signal reflected off the surface is estimated for varying wind speed and wind direction, platform altitude, satellite elevation angle, and receiver integration time.

Flood warnings, flood disaster assessments, and flood hazard reduction: the roles of orbital remote sensing

Orbital remote sensing of the Earth is now poised to make three fundamental contributions towards reducing the detrimental effects of extreme floods. Effective Flood warning requires frequent radar observation of the Earth's surface through cloud cover. In contrast, both optical and radar wavelengths will increasingly be used for disaster assessment and hazard reduction.

Radar Remote Sensing

This lecture was just a taste of radar remote sensing techniques and applications. Other important areas include Stereo radar grammetry. PolInSAR for volumetric structure mapping. Agricultural monitoring, soil moisture, ice-mapping, etc. The broad range of sensor types, frequencies of observation and availability of sensors have enabled radar sensors to make significant contributions in a wide area of earth and planetary remote sensing sciences. The range of applications, both qualitative and quantitative, continue to expand with each new generation of sensors.
