SCIMON: Scientific Inspiration Machines Optimized for Novelty

We explore and enhance the ability of neu- ral language models to generate novel scien- tific directions grounded in literature. Work on literature-based hypothesis generation has traditionally focused on binary link prediction— severely limiting the expressivity of hypothe- ses. This line of work also does not focus on optimizing novelty. We take a dramatic depar- ture with a novel setting in which models use as input background contexts (e.g., problems, experimental settings, goals), and output natu- ral language ideas grounded in literature. We present SCIMON, a modeling framework that uses retrieval of “inspirations” from past scien- tific papers, and explicitly optimizes for novelty by iteratively comparing to prior papers and up- dating idea suggestions until sufficient novelty is achieved. Comprehensive evaluations reveal that GPT-4 tends to generate ideas with over- all low technical depth and novelty, while our methods partially mitigate this issue. Our work represents a first step toward evaluating and developing language models that generate new ideas derived from the scientific literature.

Visualization techniques for the gyrokinetic tokamak simulation code

Gyrokinetic simulations of plasma microturbulence in tokamaks are challenging to visualize because the compute grid follows the magnetic field lines that spiral around the torus. We have overcome this challenge by developing three new approaches that improve visualization of gyrokinetics. Our techniques work directly with the topology of magnetic flux surfaces where the simulation stores variables in concentric rings on poloidal planes (vertical cross sections of the torus). Our visualization preview step triangulates each consecutive pair of rings to display the data on a poloidal plane. The second visualization technique follows spiral field lines around the torus and constructs polygons to visualize a flux surface. Third, the poloidal triangles are connected between planes to form prisms that compose a 3-D model of the entire torus. The visualization workflow produces detailed geometry that matches the high resolution, irregular compute grid for every time step. The surface and solid models are displayed in scientific visualization programs to effectively explore and communicate the results, including fluctuation of electron density, ion temperature, and electrostatic potential. Highly detailed renderings verify plasma behavior along magnetic field lines over time.

Advanced Visualization for Scientific Data Analysis and Insight [Slides]

This talk will explore how we have used advanced visualization technologies to support analytical reasoning and knowledge discovery. Specifically, we will present several examples detailing some recent scientific successes using state-of-the-art immersive and high-resolution visualization at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's Computational Science Center. On multiple occasions, we have observed scientists and engineers discover features in their data using advanced visualization technologies that they had not seen in prior investigations of their data on traditional desktop displays. We have embedded more information into our analytics tools, allowing engineers to explore complex multivariate spaces. We have observed how interactions seem to catalyze understanding.

Machine Learning Techniques for Pile-Up Rejection in Cryogenic Calorimeters

CUORE Upgrade with Particle IDentification (CUPID) is a foreseen ton-scale array of Li 2 MoO 4 (LMO) cryogenic calorimeters with double readout of heat and light signals. Its scientific goal is to fully explore the inverted hierarchy of neutrino masses in the search for neutrinoless double beta decay of 100 Mo. Pile-up of standard double beta decay of the candidate isotope is a relevant background. We generate pile-up heat events via injection of Joule heater pulses with a programmable waveform generator in a small array of LMO crystals operated underground in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy. This allows to label pile-up pulses and control both time difference and underlying amplitudes of individual heat pulses in the data. We present the performance of supervised learning classifiers on data and the attained pile-up rejection efficiency.

Transmission spectroscopy of CF 4 molecules in intense x-ray fields

The nonlinear interaction of x rays with matter is at the heart of understanding and controlling ultrafast molecular dynamics from an atom-specific viewpoint, providing new scientific and analytical opportunities to explore the structure and dynamics of small quantum systems. At increasingly high x-ray intensity, the sensitivity of ultrashort x-ray pulses to specific electronic states and emerging short-lived transient intermediates is of particular relevance for our understanding of fundamental multiphoton absorption processes. In this work, intense x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) pulses at the European XFEL are combined with a gas cell and grating spectrometer for a high-intensity transmission spectroscopy study of multiphoton-induced ultrafast molecular fragmentation dynamics in CF 4 . This approach unlocks the direct intrapulse observation of transient fragments, including neutral atoms, by their characteristic absorption lines in the transmitted broadband x-ray spectrum. The dynamics with and without initially producing fluorine 𝐾-shell holes are studied by tuning the central photon energy. The absorption spectra are measured at different FEL intensities to observe nonlinear effects. Transient isolated fluorine atoms and ions are spectroscopically recorded within the ultrashort pulse duration of a few tens of femtoseconds. An isosbestic point that signifies the correlated transition between intact neutral CF 4 molecules and charged atomic fragments is observed near the fluorine 𝐾 edge. The dissociation dynamics and the multiphoton absorption-induced dynamics encoded in the spectra are theoretically interpreted. Overall, this study demonstrates the potential of high-intensity x-ray transmission spectroscopy to study ultrafast molecular dynamics with sensitivity to specific intermediate species and their electronic structure.

LeWRON: Learning ElectroWeak phase tRansitiON with agentic architecture

An agent to analyze electroweak phase transition. LeWRON turns a BSM model description or a reproduction target into a structured run: symbolic setup, effective-potential artifacts, finite-temperature machinery, generated model code, a scientific report, and an interactive exploration session. It keeps both machine-readable artifacts and human-readable notes, so a run can be resumed, audited, revised, and shared.

Toward a Generalizable Framework of Disturbance Ecology Through Crowdsourced Science

Disturbances fundamentally alter ecosystem functions, yet predicting their impacts remains a key scientific challenge. While the study of disturbances is ubiquitous across many ecological disciplines, there is no agreed-upon, cross-disciplinary foundation for discussing or quantifying the complexity of disturbances, and no consistent terminology or methodologies exist. This inconsistency presents an increasingly urgent challenge due to accelerating global change and the threat of interacting disturbances that can destabilize ecosystem responses. By harvesting the expertise of an interdisciplinary cohort of contributors spanning 42 institutions across 15 countries, we identified an essential limitation in disturbance ecology: the word ‘disturbance’ is used interchangeably to refer to both the events that cause, and the consequences of, ecological change, despite fundamental distinctions between the two meanings. In response, we developed a generalizable framework of ecosystem disturbances, providing a well-defined lexicon for understanding disturbances across perspectives and scales. The framework results from ideas that resonate across multiple scientific disciplines and provides a baseline standard to compare disturbances across fields. This framework can be supplemented by discipline-specific variables to provide maximum benefit to both inter- and intra-disciplinary research. To support future syntheses and meta-analyses of disturbance research, we also encourage researchers to be explicit in how they define disturbance drivers and impacts, and we recommend minimum reporting standards that are applicable regardless of scale. Finally, we discuss the primary factors we considered when developing a baseline framework and propose four future directions to advance our interdisciplinary understanding of disturbances and their social-ecological impacts: integrating across ecological scales, understanding disturbance interactions, establishing baselines and trajectories, and developing process-based models and ecological forecasting initiatives. Our experience through this process motivates us to encourage the wider scientific community to continue to explore new approaches for leveraging Open Science principles in generating creative and multidisciplinary ideas.
