Executive Micro-CT Low-resolution Summary for Catheter Parts [Slides]

Data scans were performed on a Zeiss Xradia 520 Versa operated by departments 1851 (Philip Noell) and 1819 (James Griego). Sample 1, 2, and 3 Catheters were scanned with a 30 um pixel (low-resolution) to get an overall view of the part. (This does not include the entire height of the catheter assembly.) The following slides show the Z, Y, and X slice plane at a specific cross-hair location. We can perform a higher resolution scan down to —0.7 um pixel size including a limited field of view of ~700 um wide. Slide 5 has some requests for the customer for further scan locations. These catheters were provided to us by Simon Dunham of Weill Cornell Medical College.

Impacts of Renewable Energy and Green Hydrogen Policies on Uttar Pradesh's Power Sector Future: Additional Modeling Scenarios to Explore Hydrogen Flexibility [Slides]

This slide deck is part of a broader program focused on supporting Indian states with long-term power system planning. More information about this program can be found at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's "Supporting India's States With Renewable Energy Integration" web page at https://www.nrel.gov/international/india-renewable-energy-integration.html. The power sector in Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, is poised to transform over the next few decades due to a combination of national and state-level policies impacting both the supply and demand of electricity. The Government of Uttar Pradesh has policies and plans to develop in-state solar PV, pumped storage hydropower, and green hydrogen. Power system policymakers and utilities in Uttar Pradesh are faced with the challenges of planning a system that incorporates increasing amounts of renewable energy and storage resources, meets rising electricity demand due to economic development and green hydrogen production, and satisfies operational and reliability requirements. To support these various objectives, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), RMI, and the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) evaluated the least-cost pathways for the state's power sector through 2050. NREL developed a capacity expansion model that identifies investment and operational decisions for every year (2024-2050) for all of India, with detailed representation for the state of Uttar Pradesh, which can provide a framework for recurring planning studies. The purpose of this slide deck is to supplement the main study (published in May 2024) with additional modeling scenarios to explore hydrogen flexibility.

Robust superlubricity with steel surfaces in sliding contacts

A low friction wear surface with a coefficient of friction in the superlubric regime under a sliding and rolling movement. The low friction wear surface includes molybdenum disulfide and graphene oxide on a first wear surface with a tribolayer formed on a rough steel counter surface during the sliding and rolling movement. Methods of producing the low friction wear surface are also provided.

Tribochemical changes of alloy 800HT under sliding contact at elevated temperature in impure helium environment

This work investigates the chemical changes of the surface of Alloy 800HT during sliding contact under helium atmosphere in the presence of impurities at 750 °C, which is of interest for the nuclear industry. The alloy samples are exposed to helium (He) atmosphere at high temperature for long duration of 500 h to identify the chemical and topographical changes of the alloy surface. The oxidation rate constant is reported based on the weight change data. For the tribo-experimental samples, the surfaces inside and outside the wear track are studied thoroughly using techniques such as secondary electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and secondary ion mass spectroscopy. The formation and evolution of surface oxides are discussed in He atmosphere, compared with air. The presence of Fe-rich thin layer of oxide on top of a thicker Cr-rich oxide and a mixed spinel-based inner layer on the bulk is found. The persistent presence of thicker Fe3O4 in the wear track in high temperature air proved to be the reason of lower friction property. Pre-oxidation of the samples in air or He does not improve but worsen the tribological behavior in He atmosphere.

Mapping Glacier Basal Sliding Applying Machine Learning

During the RESOLVE project (“High-resolution imaging in subsurface geophysics: development of a multi-instrument platform for interdisciplinary research”), continuous surface displacement and seismic array observations were obtained on Glacier d’Argentière in the French Alps for 35 days in May 2018. The data set is used to perform a detailed study of targeted processes within the highly dynamic cryospheric environment. In particular, the physical processes controlling glacial basal motion are poorly understood and remain challenging to observe directly. Especially in the Alpine region for temperate based glaciers where the ice rapidly responds to changing climatic conditions and thus, processes are strongly intermittent in time and heterogeneous in space. Spatially dense seismic and Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements are analyzed applying machine learning to gain insight into the processes controlling glacial motions of Glacier d’Argentière. Using multiple bandpass-filtered copies of the continuous seismic waveforms, we compute energy-based features, develop a matched field beamforming catalog and include meteorological observations. Features describing the data are analyzed with a gradient boosting decision tree model to directly estimate the GPS displacements from the seismic noise. We posit that features of the seismic noise provide direct access to the dominant parameters that drive displacement on the highly variable and unsteady surface of the glacier. The machine learning model infers daily fluctuations and longer term trends. The results show on-ice displacement rates are strongly modulated by activity at the base of the glacier. The techniques presented provide a new approach to study glacial basal sliding and discover its full complexity.

The effect of microstructure on the relationship between grain boundary sliding and slip transmission in high purity aluminum

The relationship between grain boundary sliding (GBS) and slip transmission is investigated experimentally at grain boundaries in 99.99% aluminum with a through-thickness, coarse grained microstructure deformed in tension at 190 °C. Using scanning electron microscope enabled digital image correlation (SEM-DIC) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), high resolution strain fields and microstructural information were measured to examine the influence of microstructural neighborhoods on interactions between GBS and slip transmission and strain localization. Several distinct cases are presented that highlight important microstructural factors that govern deformation near grain boundaries. The findings include (1) direct transmission and GBS were anti-compatible and facilitated by opposing boundary types (low misorientation and high energy grain boundaries respectively); (2) increased GBS activity was correlated with decreased indirect transmission behavior; (3) GBS accommodation at triple junctions was enabled by intragranular plasticity; and (4) the local intragranular plastic strain discontinuity between grains determined the magnitude of GBS gradients. Finally, this work provides insight into the nature of these mechanisms and can be used to identify strain transfer criteria that can lead to improved GBS-sensitive crystal plasticity models.
