Polarizing keys prevent mismatch of connector plugs and receptacles

Keying prevents mismatching of plugs and receptacles in connector patching of instrumentation involving several thousand leads. Each receptacle and plug contains three polarizing keys that must mate in a complementary mode before the connector pins and sockets will engage.

Quick attach and release fluid coupling assembly is self-aligning, self-sealing

Fluid coupling assembly that is self-aligning, self-sealing and contains a bellow ball and socket coupling for quick attach and release is highly reliable and can handle cryogenic fluids where icing is encountered. The fluid coupling assembly is used in many fluid systems but is particularly applicable to cryogenic systems.

Herold, C. P.

Self-aligning rod prevents eccentric loading of tensile specimens

Tensile specimens can be tested in liquid nitrogen without subjecting the cryostat to tilting during assembly of the specimen in the liquid nitrogen-filled cryostat. A universal joint with a semielliptical head and socket reduces misalignment and permits only limited side travel.

Connect-disconnect coupling for preadjusted rigid shafts

Coupling device enables a rigid shaft to be connected to or disconnected from a fixed base without disturbing the point of adjustment of the shaft in a socket or causing the shaft to rotate. The coupling consists of an externally threaded, internally slotted boss extending from the fixed base.

Bajkowski, F. W.

Support for equipment - Quick mounting with quick release

Temporary support device for equipment consists of pin bracket for attachment to item and socket bracket for mounting on any structure. System is adaptable to broad range of temporary storage media. No engagement, release, or adjustment of components is required.

On the dynamics of a human body model.

Equations of motion for a model of the human body are developed. Basically, the model consists of an elliptical cylinder representing the torso, together with a system of frustrums of elliptical cones representing the limbs. They are connected to the main body and each other by hinges and ball and socket joints. Vector, tensor, and matrix methods provide a systematic organization of the geometry. The equations of motion are developed from the principles of classical mechanics. The solution of these equations then provide the displacement and rotation of the main body when the external forces and relative limb motions are specified. Three simple example motions are studied to illustrate the method. The first is an analysis and comparison of simple lifting on the earth and the moon. The second is an elementary approach to underwater swimming, including both viscous and inertia effects. The third is an analysis of kicking motion and its effect upon a vertically suspended man such as a parachutist.

Reliable low-cost battery voltage indicator for light aircraft and automobiles

Voltage indicator fits into cigarette lighter socket and utilizes light emitting and Zener diodes to display three levels of battery voltage. Indicator is superior to typical conventional electrical system indicators in that it gives a positive discrete indication of battery voltage. It is simple, inexpensive, and rugged.

Uneven drive rates of the scanning telescope: Apollo 16 mission

An investigation was made into the cause or causes of uneven drive rates during operation of the Apollo 16 scanning telescope. It was suggested that such erratic behavior was caused by either changes in the characteristics noise level of the optics counter on the panels or the repositioning process by the computer or zero optics mode. Test results show the anomaly was not caused by either of the above suggestions, instead they were caused by a broken socket spring in the telescope harness. New harnesses will be manufactured for future flights.

Tactile sensing means for prosthetic limbs

An improved prosthetic device characterized by a frame and a socket for mounting on the stump of a truncated human appendage is described. Flexible digits extend from the distal end and transducers located within the digits act as sensing devices for detecting tactile stimuli. The transducers are connected through a power circuit with a slave unit supported by a strap and fixed to the stump. The tactile stimuli detected at the sensing devices are reproduced and applied to the skin of the appendage in order to stimulate the sensory organs located therein.

Straight-line IC removal tool

Tool operates by applying force perpendicularly to socket plane. Tool can be operated in cramped or confined quarters and can effect integrated circuit removal without damage. It may also be useful to hold nut or bolt in confined space while tightening, when it is not possible to use conventional tool.

Marzek, R. A.

Signal conditioner test set

A system was developed for testing components contained in a signal conditioning module with a transistor and capacitor included in a circuit. The system includes a housing with a socket into which the module to be tested is plugged. A test switch is provided for selectively connecting a variable load to either a transistor or capacitor in the circuit for testing the operation. A signal generating circuit is provided for generating signals for use in testing the components of the module.

An investigation in MSFC 14-inch TWT to determine the static stability characteristics of 0.004-scale model (74-OTS) space shuttle vehicle 5 configuration (IA33), volume 1

Wind tunnel tests were conducted to: (1) determine the static stability characteristics of the Shuttle Vehicle 5 configuration; (2) determine the effect on the Vehicle 5 aerodynamic characteristics of External Tank (ET) and Solid Rocket Booster (SRB) nose shape, SRB nozzle shroud flare angle, orbiter to tank fairing, and sting location; (3) provide flow visualization using thin film oil paint; and (4) determine rudder, body flap, and inboard and outboard elevon hinge moments. The mated vehicle model was mounted in three different ways: (1) the orbiter mounted on the balance with the SRB's attached to the tank and the tank in turn attached to the orbiter; (2) the tank mounted on the balance (with the sting protruding through the tank base) with the SRB's and orbiter attached to the tank, and (3) with the tank mounted on the balance and the balance in turn supported by a forked sting entering the nozzle of each SRB, extending forward into the SRB's then crossing over to the tank to provide a balance socket. Data were obtained for Mach numbers from 0.6 through 4.96 at angles-of-attack and -sideslip from -10 to 10 degrees.

Results of phase change paint heat transfer test utilizing 0.040-scale 50% forebody models (no. 82-0) of the Rockwell International Space Shuttle Orbiter in AEDC VKF hypersonic tunnel B (test OH54B)

Aerodynamic heating phase change paint tests for the space shuttle orbiter are reported. The model was a 0.040 scale representation of the forward 50% of the orbiter. Surface roughness effects on boundary layer transition were investigated. The roughness was simulated by steel balls 0.020 and 0.025 inch in diameter and a 0.25 in. diameter hole simulating the forward ET attach socket. A nominal Mach number of was tested with unit Reynolds number varying from 0.75 x 1 million ft through 3.5x 1 million ft. Angle of attack was varied from 20 degrees to 40 degrees.

"Nonfloating" universal joint

Modified crowned-spline joint is lightweight, durable, and requires minimum of parts. It does not use rubber cushions to limit play and is useful over wide temperature range. It has inner ball and socket to provide rigid connection with no axial play. Joint can be adapted to form pinned connection between segmented torque tubes.

Easily-wired toggle switch

Crimp-type connectors reduce assembly and disassembly time. With design, no switch preparation is necessary and socket contracts are crimped to wires inserted in module attached to back of toggle switch engaging pins inside module to make electrical connections. Wires are easily removed with standard detachment tool. Design can accommodate wires of any gage and as many terminals can be placed on switch as wire gage and switch dimensions will allow.
