Ink Casting and 3D‐Extrusion Printing of Yb 14 MnSb 11 for High‐Temperature Thermoelectric Material

Abstract Complex shapes are created from Yb 14 MnSb 11 , a high‐temperature thermoelectric Zintl phase, via a two‐step process: i) layer‐by‐layer 3D‐extrusion of ink containing partially‐reacted powders which are ball‐milled from a blend of Yb, MnSb, and Sb powders; ii) heat treatment to synthesize the ternary compound Yb 14 MnSb 11 and densify the extruded powders. A high phase purity for Yb 14 MnSb 11 (83–94%) is achieved in both cast and 3D‐extruded ink specimens via a solid‐state reaction between Yb, MnSb, and Yb 4 Sb 3 during reactive sintering. Pressure‐free sintering at temperatures of 1200–1400 °C densifies the powders to 82% relative density but can also induce the decomposition of the Yb 14 MnSb 11 phase due to Yb sublimation. A process window with optimized sintering temperature and time is identified, achieving both low porosity and high phase purity and reaching a maximum zT = 0.61 at 1000 °C, about half of the maximum zT value for bulk Yb 14 MnSb 11 made via conventional processes (pressure sintering of precursor powders). The present approach – direct ink writing of ball‐milled powders, combined with reactive sintering – is a scalable and affordable method to fabricate thermoelectric legs with intricate 3D shapes, for enhanced performances in high‐temperature thermoelectric applications.

Mechanisms of Alkali Ionic Transport in Amorphous Oxyhalides Solid State Conductors

Amorphous oxyhalides have attracted significant attention due to their relatively high ionic conductivity (1 mS cm –1 ), excellent chemical stability, mechanical softness, and facile synthesis routes via standard solid‐state reactions. These materials exhibit an ionic conductivity that is almost independent of the underlying chemistry, in stark contrast to what occurs in crystalline conductors. In this work, we employ machine learning interatomic potentials to construct large‐scale molecular dynamics trajectories encompassing hundreds of nanoseconds to obtain statistically converged transport properties. We find that the amorphous state consists of chain fragments of metal‐anion tetrahedra of various lengths. By analyzing the residence time of alkali cations migrating around tetrahedrally‐coordinated metals, we find that oxygen anions limit alkali diffusion. By computing the full Einstein expression of the ionic conductivity, we demonstrate that the alkali transference number of these materials is strongly influenced by distinct‐particles correlations, while alkali transport is dictated by uncorrelated self‐diffusion. By extending this analysis to chemical compositions AMX 2.5 O 0.75 , spanning different alkaline (A = Li, Na, K), metallic (M = Al, Ga, In), and halogen (X = Cl, Br, I) species, we clarify why the diffusion properties of these materials remain largely insensitive to variations in atomic isovalent chemistry.

Controlled Growth and Chemical Engineering of FeSe‐Based Superconducting Films

Abstract Chemical engineering tailors functional materials to meet the demands of physical and chemical properties, accelerating materials discovery and design in a multidisciplinary field. However, stereotyped synthetic paradigms in physical and chemical approaches obstruct the effective integration of multiple advantages of respective materials exploration methods. Solid state reaction is often considered separately with wet chemistry synthesis route, such as film growth using physical vapor deposition and hydrothermal methods. Here, the controlled growth of FeSe thin films by physical deposition techniques followed by the chemical engineering to create heterogenous interface in FeSe films via a solution‐based environment is demonstrated. The two‐step route allows an expanded crystal structure and enhanced superconducting transition temperature from 3.6 to 38 K, providing a new strategy to design functional hybrid materials.

Synthesis, Structural Characterization and Chemical Bonding of Sr 7 Li 6 Sn 12 and its Quaternary Derivatives with Eu and Alkaline Earth Metal (Mg, Ca, Ba) Substitutions. A Tale of Seven Li‐Containing Stannides and Two Complex Crystal Structures

In this paper, we discuss the synthesis and the structural characterization of the new ternary compound Sr 7 Li 6 Sn 12 and its six quaternary derivatives, where alkaline earth metals (Ca, Mg, Ba) and the rare earth metal Eu are substituted, yielding crystalline phases of monoclinic or orthorhombic symmetry. The title compounds were synthesized via high‐temperature solid‐state reactions of the corresponding elements. The crystal structures were determined by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction methods. The (Sr,Ca) 7 Li 6 Sn 12 and Eu 7 (Mg,Li) 6 Sn 12 phases represent a new structure type (space group P 2/ m , No. 10) while Sr 7 Li 6 Sn 12 and the rest of the title phases crystallize in the orthorhombic base‐centered space group Cmmm (No. 65) which is similar to the Eu 7 Li 8– x Sn 10+ x ( x ≈ 2.0) phase with the Ce 7 Li 8 Ge 10 structure type (Pearson code oC 50). Careful examination of the resulting structures shows intricate disordering between Li and Sn atoms, which is governed by the total number of valence electrons. The discussion of experimental results is also supported by DFT electronic structure calculations.

Mesocrystalline Ordering and Phase Transformation of Iron Oxide Biominerals in the Ultrahard Teeth of Cryptochiton stelleri

Biological organisms naturally synthesize complex, hierarchical, multifunctional materials through mineralization processes at ambient conditions and under physiological pH. One such example is the ultrahard and wear-resistant radular teeth found in mollusks, which are used to scape against the rock to feed on algae. Herein, the biologically controlled structural development of the hard, outer magnetite-containing shell of the chitin teeth is revealed. Specifically, the formation of a series of mesocrystalline iron oxide phases, templated by chitin-binding proteins, is identified. The initial domains, consisting of ferrihydrite mesocrystals with a spherulite-like morphology, undergo a solid-state phase transformation to form magnetite while maintaining mesocrystallinity, likely via a shear-induced solid-state reaction, without any noticeable architectural changes. Subsequent growth via Ostwald ripening leads to nearly single-crystalline rod-like elements. In addition, an interpenetrating organic matrix is identified that, at early stages of tooth development, potentially contains iron-binding proteins that guide the self-assembly of the mesocrystalline mineral and influence the preferred orientation of the later-formed magnetite nanorods, which ultimately determines the mechanical behavior of the mature chiton teeth.

High Strain Response and Dielectric Properties of Bi 1/2 (Na 0.78 K 0.22 ) 1/2 TiO 3 Ceramics Doped with (Fe 1/2 Nb 1/2 ) 4+

Environmentally friendly piezoceramics Bi 1/2 (Na 0.78 K 0.22 ) 1/2 Ti 1-x (Fe 1/2 Nb 1/2 ) x O 3 (BNKT-FN) with FeNb (FN) ratios 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03 and 0.04 were synthesized via conventional solid-state reaction (CSSR). X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that the FN complexes were completely dissolved in BNKT perovskite and the structural transition occurred from ferroelectric to relaxor state. The average grain sizes for x = 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03 and 0.04 were found to be 0.34 μm, 0.35 μm, 0.38 μm, 0.32 μm and 0.39 μm, respectively. It is observed that the grain size increased with the addition of FN, except for x = 0.03. Here, the coercive field (E c ) and remnant polarization (P r ) of the system were decreased with increasing FN concentration and the highest E c of 21.1 kV/cm and P r of 29.2 μC/cm 2 were noted for the base pure sample. In addition, the increase of FN content steadily broadened the dielectric anomaly at maximum dielectric constant temperature (T m ) in the BNKT-FN system. Consequently, unipolar normalized strain (S max /E max ) was found to be enhanced monotonically achieving the highest value of around 654 pm/V (x = 0.02). These properties suggest that the investigated system could be a promising eco-friendly candidate for piezoelectric actuators and many other applications requiring high piezoelectric induced strain.

Critical nuclei at hetero-phase interfaces

Two-step nucleation, in which a metastable intermediate phase acts as a precursor for nucleating a thermodynamically stable phase, has been widely observed in many materials systems and solid-state reactions. Among the advantages of two-step nucleation is that the stable phase may nucleate heterogeneously at the hetero-phase interface between the original and the precursory phases. Although heterogeneous nucleation (HN) theories for homo-phase grain boundaries and inert surfaces are well established, our understanding of HN at reactive hetero-phase interfaces remains incomplete. This deficiency stems from the discontinuity of the chemical potential driving force across the hetero-phase interface, which profoundly affects the fundamental properties of the nucleus in a way that is not properly accounted for in existing models. In this work, we incorporate these effects to extend the classical nucleation theory to HN at hetero-phase interfaces. Our extended model demonstrates that the nucleus shape along the minimum energy path is strongly size-dependent, and this additional degree of freedom can result in the reduction of the critical nucleus volume and associated activation energy barrier by orders of magnitude relative to conventional predictions. The simulation results are used to construct a sensitivity map in the parameter space of interfacial energy and bulk driving force ratios, which quantifies the difference in nucleation barriers predicted by different models.

Developing new alkaline ceramics as possible CO 2 chemisorbents at high temperatures: The lithium and sodium yttriates (LiYO 2 and NaYO 2 ) cases

In this work, lithium and sodium yttriates (LiYO 2 and NaYO 2 ) were synthesized, characterized and tested as possible carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) captors. All the experimental syntheses and analyses were supported by the theoretical thermodynamic calculations, showing that both ceramics would be able to chemisorb CO 2 in a wide temperature range. Therefore, both ceramics were prepared by solid-state reaction and structurally characterized. In fact, the structural characterization evidenced that sodium atoms are located in a octahedral close-packed structure, while lithium ions are not so packed. The lithium ions are, indeed, in a highly distorted tetrahedron, tending to square-planar coordination. Then, based on the theoretical and structural analysis, LiYO 2 and NaYO 2 samples were investigated for the CO 2 capture process through dynamic and isothermal thermogravimetric experiments. All these experiments showed that LiYO 2 has better CO 2 capture properties than NaYO 2 , which was further correlated with the crystal structures of each ceramic. Furthermore, both ceramics presented similar CO 2 capture efficiencies regardless of the CO 2 concentration. Finally, LiYO 2 sample was tested for cyclic CO 2 chemisorption-desorption processes. The obtained results showed that the CO 2 capture efficiency is maintained high at least through 10 cycles. Therefore, these alkaline yttriates seem to present interesting alternatives as high and moderate temperature CO 2 captors, applicable for post-combustion industrial capture processes.

Synthesis of Hf 6 Ta 2 O 17 superstructure via spark plasma sintering for improved oxidation resistance of multi-component ultra-high temperature ceramics

Ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs) have shown aspiration to overcome challenges in the thermal protection system (TPS) by designing new materials referred to as multi-component UHTCs (MC-UHTCs) in the compositional space. MC-UHTCs have shown remarkable improvement in oxidation resistance due to the formation of the Hf6Ta2O17 superstructure during plasma exposure. Herein, the Hf 6 Ta 2 O 17 superstructure is synthesized via a solid-state reaction between HfO 2 and Ta 2 O 5 powder mixtures during spark plasma sintering (SPS). The compositions chosen are 50 vol% of HfO 2 -50 vol% of Ta 2 O 5 (50HO-50TO) and 70 vol% of HfO 2 -30 vol% of Ta 2 O 5 (70HO-30TO). The phase quantification via Rietveld analysis showed Hf 6 Ta 2 O 17 as a principal phase with some residual Ta 2 O 5 phase in both the samples. The high-temperature thermal stability of the samples was evaluated using high-velocity plasma jet exposure for up to 3 min. 50HO-50TO was able to withstand the intense plasma condition, which is attributed to the higher content of the Hf 6 Ta 2 O 17 phase (~84%) and lower strain in the Ta 2 O 5 phase. The augmentation in the Hf 6 Ta 2 O 17 phase to 94.7% (in 50HO-50TO) post plasma exposure has been attributed to the invariant transformation from a liquid state to Hf 6 Ta 2 O 17 at temperatures >2500 °C during testing. The mechanical integrity is elucidated from the insignificant change in the hardness ~13.3 GPa before and 11.2 GPa after plasma exposure of the 50HO-50TO sample. As a result, the Hf 6 Ta 2 O 17 superstructure's thermo-mechanical stability suggests developing novel oxidation-resistant MC-UHTCs in compositional space for reusable space vehicle applications.

Single crystal growth and characterization of topological semimetal ZrSnTe

High quality single crystals are critical for experimental materials science research. ZrSnTe represents such an example. This material belongs to the ZrSiS-type topological material family, which is so far the only one in this material family possessing Fermi surface formed by Dirac bands generated by a Sn-square net. Experimental study on ZrSnTe is limited due to the difficulty in single crystal growth. Here, in this work, we report the single crystal growth for ZrSnTe using a solid-state reaction method with Sn as a flux. The roles of various growth parameters such as the molar ratio of starting materials, growth temperature and cooling rate in obtaining sizeable single crystals were investigated. The quality of the obtained single crystals was checked by elemental, structural and electronic characterizations. Our study on the growth method for ZrSnTe would enable the future study on this less explored topological semimetal.

Thermal stability of oxidized ultrathin Li films on TZM for plasma facing components

For improved understanding of the behavior of Li plasma facing components (PFCs) in the presence of oxygen impurities, we report on the thermal stability of ultrathin (up to 1.0 nm) LiO x films on a titanium-zirconium-molybdenum (TZM) alloy substrate over the temperature range of 310–1400 K. LiO x films were prepared by either post-oxidation of Li films or Li films deposited on an oxygen-precovered TZM surface. Thermal stability of these films was studied using a combination of temperature programmed desorption (TPD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and low-energy ion scattering (LEIS). For post-oxidized Li films, TPD showed that no Li desorption occurred until temperatures above 620 K, and then Li desorbed from the surface via at least three desorption peaks. The O 1s XPS spectra on the post-oxidized films at 310 K indicate the formation of lithium oxide (Li2O) and peroxide/hydroxide (Li 2 O 2 /LiOH). The peroxide/hydroxide converts to oxide after heating to 680 K with no desorption of Li or O 2 , and then this film decomposes to liberate Li into the gas phase while leaving oxygen at the TZM surface. Heating the LiO x films to 1070 K led to a solid-state reaction with surface Mo atoms of the substrate to form a condensed binary lithium molybdenum oxide (LixMoOy) phase, which upon further heating decomposed to liberate gas phase binary lithium molybdenum oxide species. Li deposition on an oxygen-precovered TZM surface formed a complex, highly stable, oxygen rich, Li-O-Mo interfacial oxide. Li desorption from multilayer Li films on oxygen-precovered TZM surfaces occurred in a metallic Li multilayer peak and three other oxide-derived peaks. These results support the improved thermal stability of oxidized lithium as compared to metallic Li and have implications for Mo impurity transport into the plasma at high temperatures.

Crystal structure and magnetic properties of Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19

Here, in this study, a novel magnetic semimetal compound, Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19 , was synthesized successfully via high-temperature solid-state reaction. The crystal structure of Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19 was determined using both single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction techniques, revealing a non-centrosymmetric orthorhombic space group, Pmn2 1 (No. 31). The Sb atoms in Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19 form five-atom-wide Sb 5 7− ribbons, narrower three-atom-wide Sb 3 5− ribbons, and single Sb 3− anions. On the other hand, both Gd 3+ and Mn 2+ ions form the distorted Gd 3 and Mn 3 triangular lattices, respectively. The magnetic measurements suggest the complex magnetic interactions contributed by both Gd 3+ and Mn 2+ ions. A sharp peak observed in the magnetic susceptibility plot at approximately 25 K corresponds to the antiferromagnetic-type transition in Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19 . Furthermore, the magnetic measurements along different directions indicate the strong magnetic anisotropy present in Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19 , which is likely due to the complex magnetic interactions arising from the existence of Gd and Mn ions. Finally, the electrical resistivity measurements of Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19 indicate semimetallic behavior with a positive magnetoresistance.

High-pressure synthesis, crystal structure, and magnetic properties of the Shastry-Sutherland-lattice oxides BaL n 2 ZnO 5 (L n = Pr, Sm, Eu)

BaPr 2 ZnO 5 , BaSm 2 ZnO 5 , and BaEu 2 ZnO 5 – a series of 4f magnetic insulators comprising the Shastry-Sutherland lattice – were synthesized via a solid-state reaction under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. The magnetic behaviors are well characterized by the localized 4f electrons of each Ln 3+ (= Pr, Sm, Eu) under the influence of the crystal-electric field of the surrounding ions. The magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements of BaPr 2 ZnO 5 (Pr 3+ ; 4f 2 3 H 4 ) indicate the splitting of the ground state J-multiplet due to the crystal-electric field. BaSm 2 ZnO 5 (Sm 3+ ; 4f 5 6 H 5/2 ) is a strong Van Vleck paramagnet, while BaEu 2 ZnO 5 is non-magnetic due to the 7 F 0 ground state (Eu 3+ ; 4f 6 7 F 0 ). The series of new oxides enriches a group of the Shastry-Sutherland lattice materials and helps to develop a range of two-dimensional quantum materials.

Unraveling the formation mechanism of NaCoPO 4 polymorphs

Phosphate compounds are one of the attractive classes of cathodes for their potential application in rechargeable Na-ion batteries (NIBs) due to their high insertion voltages and stabilities. Unlike olivine-LiMPO 4 (M = Fe, Mn, Co, Ni) cathodes, maricite-NaMPO 4 phases are electrochemically inactive due to lack of sodium diffusion channels. Interestingly, cobalt bearing compounds exhibit rich polymorphism (α-, β-, ABW- and Red-NaCoPO 4 ). However, the preparation of NaCoPO 4 single phases is challenging due to their closer enthalpies of formation. In this study, we have attempted to understand the formation mechanism of NaCoPO 4 polymorphs during solid state reaction using two different cobalt precursors (Co(OH) 2 and CoCO 3 ). The temperature dependent in-situ powder X-ray Diffraction (PXRD) studies showed the formation of β-NaCoPO 4 at a much lower temperature compared to the one reported in the literature, whilst we have discovered a new high temperature polymorph gamma-NaCoPO 4 . The choice of precursors was also found to be important for the preparation of ABW-NaCoPO 4 , i.e., the rapid decomposition of Co(OH) 2 has resulted in its formation whilst the high stability of CoCO 3 prohibited the same. The order of the formation of the NaCoPO 4 polymorphs during heating was found to be ABW→β→α →$\gamma$. During normal cooling, gamma-NaCoPO 4 transformed primarily into alpha-polymorph whilst quenching in liquid N-2 resulted in the formation of β-NaCoPO 4 The as-synthesized beta- and ABW-NaCoPO 4 phases exhibited high sodium (de)-intercalation voltages (similar to 4.2 and 4.5 V vs. Na + /Na 0 , respectively), albeit with limited reversible capacities. This study is expected to open new avenues to harvest metastable polymorphs based on other transition metals (Fe, Mn and Ni).

Structure of triple perovskite BaSr 2 MgTa 2 O 9 revisited

An experimental investigation of the structure and crystal-chemistry of the triple perovskite BaSr 2 MgTa 2 O 9 is reported. Polycrystalline BaSr 2 MgTa 2 O 9 was synthesized via solid-state reaction and its structure quantitatively probed at 10 and 300 K using neutron diffraction. Monoclinic (A2/m, a 0 $\bar{b}$ – $b$ – ) and trigonal structural models (P$\bar{3}$c1, a – a – a – ) were fit to diffraction data. The former was found to correctly reproduce experimental intensities, while the latter failed to do so. This difference is attributed to the ability of the monoclinic model to accurately reflect octahedral tilting. BaSr 2 MgTa 2 O 9 features corner-sharing MgO 6 and TaO 6 octahedra with barium and strontium cations occupying cubooctahedral holes. Barium and strontium are disordered over the A site, whereas B site cations magnesium and tantalum are ordered. Finally, chemical substitution of strontium for barium in Ba 3 MgTa 2 O 9 induces tilting of MgO 6 and TaO 6 octahedra in two directions and geometric distortions of MgO 6 octahedra.

High-throughput investigation of structural evolution upon solid-state in Cu–Cr–Co combinatorial multilayer thin-film

Cu-Cr-Co combinatorial multilayer thin-films were prepared by a high-throughput ion beam sputtering system. Based on the thickness ratio among the individual nanoscale monolayers (Cu, Cr, Co), the resulting stoichiometry covered the entire phase diagram. The chemical composition and structure of Cu-Cr-Co combinatorial chip upon solid-state reaction were studied by lab-based micro-X-ray fluorescence (mu-XRF) and high-throughput synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. A composition-structure map for Cu-Cr-Co combinatorial chip was developed through automated data analysis employing hierarchical clustering techniques. The structural evolution of Cu-Cr-Co combinatorial chip as a function of heat-treatment temperature, time, and modulation period were studied systematically. Furthermore, the effect of the elemental distribution in-depth direction was investigated to gain more insights regarding phase transformation. This work provides an efficient method and new perspectives for the design and optimization of the composition and structure of high-performance thin-films.

Unusual superparamagnetic behavior in bulk Ba 0.198 La 0.784 Ti 0.096 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ

Here, we report the observation of superparamgnetic behavior induced by the substitution La 3+ by Ba 2+ at A-sites and Fe +3 by Ti 4+ at B-sites. Ba 0.198 La 0.784 Ti 0.096 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ was synthesized via solid state reaction. The Rietveld refinements revealed an orthorhombic (Pbnm). The low-mag STEM results showed that the particles were found to exhibit square like shape and formed in single crystal with high degree of crystallinity. The particle size ranges of 50 300 nm. Element mapping demonstrates a complementary distribution between Ba and La, while homogenous distribution is found for Fe and O. The optical band gap determined from UV-vis analysis is equal to 1.93 eV which is smaller than the reported one for LaFeO 3 and BaTiO 3 . The hysteresis loops at 300 K and 10 K show superparamagnetic behavior, which deviate extremely from the antiferromagnetic nature of LaFeO 3 perovskite. The temperature dependent magnetization demonstrates that the material kept a net magnetization of 12.29 (emu/g) at very low temperature.

Structural, magnetic, optical, dielectric and electronic properties of R 2 NiIrO 6 (R = Pr and Nd): A comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigation

Double perovskites are highly promising materials capable of exhibiting a wide variety of phenomena. In this work, we perform a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of polycrystalline R 2 NiIrO 6 (R = Pr and Nd) compounds. Both compounds were synthesised using the solid-state reaction method. Rietveld refinement confirmed a monoclinic structure with the P2 1 /n space group for both compounds. The scanning electron images showed the average grain sizes of 0.55 μm for R = Pr and 0.46 μm for R = Nd. Fourier transform infrared ra- diation spectra of the two compounds presented two intense bands at 470 cm -1 and 540 cm -1 . The optical measurements revealed that the band gaps of the compounds were in the visible absorption range. The field- cooled magnetisation - field hysteresis measurements indicated exchange bias properties in the synthesised compounds at low temperatures. Both temperature and frequency variation of dielectric constant and loss tangent measurements were conducted. The frequency-dependent ac conductivity measurements indicated that the conductivity increases with the increase of frequency as well as temperature. The Nd 2 NiIrO 6 compound showed lower ac conductivities compared to its isostructural Pr 2 NiIrO 6 compound. The atomic and electronic structures of Nd 2 NiIrO 6 and Pr 2 NiIrO 6 were explored using the spin-polarised calculations performed within the DFT+U method. Our results suggested that the inclusion of on-site correlations and repulsions for the d-states of atoms was necessary in order to obtain finite band gaps of Nd 2 NiIrO 6 and Pr 2 NiIrO 6 systems.
