Spectral methods in fluid dynamics

Fundamental aspects of spectral methods are introduced. Recent developments in spectral methods are reviewed with an emphasis on collocation techniques. Their applications to both compressible and incompressible flows, to viscous as well as inviscid flows, and also to chemically reacting flows are surveyed. The key role that these methods play in the simulation of stability, transition, and turbulence is brought out. A perspective is provided on some of the obstacles that prohibit a wider use of these methods, and how these obstacles are being overcome.

Spectral simulation of unsteady compressible flow past a circular cylinder

An unsteady compressible viscous wake flow past a circular cylinder was successfully simulated using spectral methods. A new approach in using the Chebyshev collocation method for periodic problems is introduced. It was further proved that the eigenvalues associated with the differentiation matrix are purely imaginary, reflecting the periodicity of the problem. It was been shown that the solution of a model problem has exponential growth in time if improper boundary conditions are used. A characteristic boundary condition, which is based on the characteristics of the Euler equations of gas dynamics, was derived for the spectral code. The primary vortex shedding frequency computed agrees well with the results in the literature for Mach = 0.4, Re = 80. No secondary frequency is observed in the power spectrum analysis of the pressure data.

thornado-hydro: A Discontinuous Galerkin Method for Supernova Hydrodynamics with Nuclear Equations of State

This paper describes algorithms for non-relativistic hydrodynamics in the toolkit for high-order neutrino radiation hydrodynamics (thornado), which is being developed for multiphysics simulations of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) and related problems with Runge–Kutta discontinuous Galerkin (RKDG) methods. More specifically, thornado employs a spectral type nodal collocation approximation, and we have extended limiters — a slope limiter to prevent non-physical oscillations and a bound-enforcing limiter to prevent non-physical states — from the standard RKDG framework to be able to accommodate a tabulated nuclear equation of state (EoS). To demonstrate the efficacy of the algorithms with a nuclear EoS, we first present numerical results from basic test problems in idealized settings in one and two spatial dimensions, employing Cartesian, spherical-polar, and cylindrical coordinates. Then, we apply the RKDG method to the problem of adiabatic collapse, shock formation, and shock propagation in spherical symmetry, initiated with a 15 M ⊙ progenitor. Herein, we find that the extended limiters improve the fidelity and robustness of the RKDG method in idealized settings. The bound-enforcing limiter improves robustness of the RKDG method in the adiabatic collapse application, while we find that slope limiting in characteristic fields is vulnerable to structures in the EoS — more specifically, in the phase transition from nuclei and nucleons to bulk nuclear matter. The success of these applications marks an important step toward applying RKDG methods to more realistic CCSN simulations with thornado in the future.

A comparison of numerical methods for the Rayleigh equation in unbounded domains

A second-order finite difference and two spectral methods, including a Chebyshev tau and a Chebyshev collocation method were implemented to determine the linear hydrodynamic stability of an unbounded shear flow. The velocity profile of the basic flow in the stability analysis mimicks that of a one-stream free mixing layer. Local and global eigenvalue solution methods are used to determine individual eigenvalues and the eigenvalue spectrum, respectively. The calculated eigenvalue spectrum includes a discrete mode, a continuous spectrum associated with the equation singularity and a continuous spectrum associated with the domain unboundedness. The efficiency and the accuracy of these discretization methods in the prediction of the eigensolutions of the discrete mode were evaluated by comparison with a conventional shooting procedure. Their capabilities in mapping out the continuous eigenvalue spectra are also discussed.

A multidomain spectral method for viscous compressible flows

We present a new multidomain spectral method for the solution of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. In the subdomain interiors, Chebyshev spectral collocation is used. At interfaces, the advective terms are upwinded and the viscous terms are treated by a penalty method. The method is applied to the solution of a viscous hypersonic flow over a blunt body.

Recent applications of spectral methods in fluid dynamics

Origins of spectral methods, especially their relation to the method of weighted residuals, are surveyed. Basic Fourier and Chebyshev spectral concepts are reviewed and demonstrated through application to simple model problems. Both collocation and tau methods are considered. These techniques are then applied to a number of difficult, nonlinear problems of hyperbolic, parabolic, elliptic and mixzed type. Fluid dynamical applications are emphasized.

Observation-Based Cloud Radiative Kernels from A-Train

We develop a method to empirically derive broadband and spectral cloud radiative kernels by cloud type from pixel-scale collocated A-Train observations and reanalysis, which does not require additional cloudy radiative transfer calculations nor cloud properties. This method is able to estimate the cloud feedback by maintaining the consistency between CRKs and cloud responses.

Numerical methods for hypersonic boundary layer stability

Four different schemes for solving compressible boundary layer stability equations are developed and compared, considering both the temporal and spatial stability for a global eigenvalue spectrum and a local eigenvalue search. The discretizations considered encompass: (1) a second-order-staggered finite-difference scheme; (2) a fourth-order accurate, two-point compact scheme; (3) a single-domain Chebychev spectral collocation scheme; and (4) a multidomain spectral collocation scheme. As Mach number increases, the performance of the single-domain collocation scheme deteriorates due to the outward movement of the critical layer; a multidomain spectral method is accordingly designed to furnish superior resolution of the critical layer.

Quadrature imposition of compatibility conditions in Chebyshev methods

This paper handles a problem encountered in the solution by way of Chebyshev spectral collocation discretization of the Poisson equation with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. When pseudospectral Chebyshev methodology is utilized to discretize the partial differential equation these integrals have to be approximated by an appropriate quadrature formula. The correct quadrature formula is developed for these problems, taking into account the degree of the polynomials involved. It is shown that this formula leads to a well-conditioned Chebyshev approximation to the differential equations and that the compatibility condition is automatically satisfied.

A spectral boundary integral equation method for the 2-D Helmholtz equation

In this paper, we present a new numerical formulation of solving the boundary integral equations reformulated from the Helmholtz equation. The boundaries of the problems are assumed to be smooth closed contours. The solution on the boundary is treated as a periodic function, which is in turn approximated by a truncated Fourier series. A Fourier collocation method is followed in which the boundary integral equation is transformed into a system of algebraic equations. It is shown that in order to achieve spectral accuracy for the numerical formulation, the nonsmoothness of the integral kernels, associated with the Helmholtz equation, must be carefully removed. The emphasis of the paper is on investigating the essential elements of removing the nonsmoothness of the integral kernels in the spectral implementation. The present method is robust for a general boundary contour. Aspects of efficient implementation of the method using FFT are also discussed. A numerical example of wave scattering is given in which the exponential accuracy of the present numerical method is demonstrated.

Convergence results for pseudospectral approximations of hyperbolic systems by a penalty type boundary treatment

A new method of imposing boundary conditions in the pseudospectral approximation of hyperbolic systems of equations is proposed. It is suggested to collocate the equations, not only at the inner grid points, but also at the boundary points and use the boundary conditions as penalty terms. In the pseudo-spectral Legrendre method with the new boundary treatment, a stability analysis for the case of a constant coefficient hyperbolic system is presented and error estimates are derived.

Spectral methods on arbitrary grids

Stable and spectrally accurate numerical methods are constructed on arbitrary grids for partial differential equations. These new methods are equivalent to conventional spectral methods but do not rely on specific grid distributions. Specifically, we show how to implement Legendre Galerkin, Legendre collocation, and Laguerre Galerkin methodology on arbitrary grids.

Boundary conditions in Chebyshev and Legendre methods

Two different ways of treating non-Dirichlet boundary conditions in Chebyshev and Legendre collocation methods are discussed for second order differential problems. An error analysis is provided. The effect of preconditioning the corresponding spectral operators by finite difference matrices is also investigated.

Generalized INF-SUP condition for Chebyshev approximation of the Navier-Stokes equations

An abstract mixed problem and its approximation are studied; both are well-posed if and only if several inf-sup conditions are satisfied. These results are applied to a spectral Galerkin method for the Stokes problem in a square, when it is formulated in Chebyshev weighted Sobolev spaces. Finally, a collocation method for the Navier-Stokes equations at Chebyshev nodes is analyzed.

Uncertainty Propagation for Turbulent, Compressible Flow in a Quasi-1D Nozzle Using Stochastic Methods

This paper describes a fully spectral, Polynomial Chaos method for the propagation of uncertainty in numerical simulations of compressible, turbulent flow, as well as a novel stochastic collocation algorithm for the same application. The stochastic collocation method is key to the efficient use of stochastic methods on problems with complex nonlinearities, such as those associated with the turbulence model equations in compressible flow and for CFD schemes requiring solution of a Riemann problem. Both methods are applied to compressible flow in a quasi-one-dimensional nozzle. The stochastic collocation method is roughly an order of magnitude faster than the fully Galerkin Polynomial Chaos method on the inviscid problem.
