Fire- and heat-resistant laminating resins based on maleimido-substituted aromatic cyclotriphosphazenes

A novel class of flame- and heat-resistant polymers has been synthesized by the thermal polymerization of maleimido-substituted aromatic cyclotriphosphazenes. The polymer obtained from tris-(aminophenoxy)tris(maleimidophenoxy)cyclotriphosphazene has good thermal stability and is noteworthy for its high char yield, viz., 82 percent at 800 C in nitrogen and 81 percent at 700 C in air. Graphite-fabric laminates prepared with this polymer did not burn in pure oxygen, even at 300 C, and were tested for mechanical properties. Hexakis(4-maleimidophenoxy)cyclotriphosphazene and some fluorine-containing monomers have also been synthesized. The structures of these cyclic phosphazene precursors and polymers were characterized by FT IR spectrophotometry, H-1 NMR, F-19 NMR, and P-31 solid-state magic angle spinning NMR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. The curing behavior of the polymer precursors and the thermal stabilities of the polymers were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analyses (TGA).

Maleimido substituted cyclotriphosphazene resins for fire and heat resistant composites

A new class of fire- and heat-resistant matrix resins have been synthesized by the thermal polymerization of maleimido substituted phenoxycyclotriphosphazenes. The resins have exhibited a char yield of 82 percent at 800 C in nitrogen and 81 percent at 700 C in air. Graphite-fabric laminates based on a resin of this class have shown a limiting oxygen index of 100 percent even at 300 C. Details of the fabrication of the resins and the composites and testing procedures are discussed.

Studies on organic semiconductors. 15: Effects of the substituents on the photoconductivities of substituted anthracenes

The photocurrents of the substituted anthracenes, 1,5-diacetylanthracene (2), 1-acetylanthracene (3), 9-acetylanthracene (4), 1,5-dichloroanthracene (5), 1,5-diethylanthracene (6), 1,5-dimethoxyanthracene (7), 9-cyanoanthracene (8), and anthracene (1) were measured by using their surface type cells in nitrogen. The compounds of (1), (5), (6), (7), and (8) showed the photocurrent spectra which corresponded to the absorption spectra of their evaporated films. In the cases of (2) and (3), however, the anomalous photocurrent appeared in the threshold region of their absorption spectra. The appearance of the anomalous photocurrent was characteristic of anthracenes having the acetyl group at 1- and/or 5-position. The magnitude of the photocurrents of the 1,5-disubstituted anthracenes was similar to that of (1). The photocurrents of the monosubstituted anthracenes were smaller than that of (1). Among the monosubstituted anthracenes, the compound (4) showed no photocurrent under the same conditions. Contrary to the results obtained in the cases of phenazines, the photoconductivities of the anthracene derivatives became better in air.

The substitution of nickel for cobalt in hot isostatically pressed powder metallurgy UDIMET 700 alloys

Nickel was substituted in various proportions for cobalt in a series of five hot-isostatically-pressed powder metallurgy alloys based on the UDIMET 700 composition. These alloys were given 5-step heat treatments appropriate for use in turbine engine disks. The resultant microstructures displayed three distinct sizes of gamma-prime particles in a gamma matrix. The higher cobalt-content alloys contained larger amounts of the finest gamma-prime particles, and had the lowest gamma-gamma-prime lattice mismatch. While all alloys had approximately the same tensile properties at 25 and 650 gamma C, the rupture lives at 650 and 760 C peaked in the alloys with cobalt contents between 12.7 and 4.3 pct. Minimum creep rates increased as cobalt contents were lowered, suggesting their correlation with the gamma-prime particle size distribution and the gamma-gamma-prime mismatch. It was also found that, on overaging at temperatures higher than suitable for turbine disk use, the high cobalt-content alloys were prone to sigma phase formation.

Fire and heat resistant laminating resins based on malemeido and citraconimido substituted 1 -2,4- and -2,6- diaminobenzenes

A novel class of fire and heat resistant bisimide resins prepared by thermal polymerization of maleimido or citraconimido substituted 1-(dialkox phosphonyl) methyl-2-4 and -2,6-diamino benzenes was presented. The polymer precursors are prepared by reacting 1-(diorgano oxyphosphonyl) methyl-2-4- and -2,6-diamino benzenes with maliec anhydride or citraconic anhydride in a mole ratio 1:2. Chain extension of the monomers is achieved by reacting the mono-N-maleimido derivaties of 1 (diorgano oxyphosphonyl) methyl -2,4- and -2,6-diamino benzenes with aryl tetracarboxylic dianhydrides, such as benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride, or aryl diisocyanates, such as methylene bis(4-phenyl isocyanate), in a mole ratio 2:1. The polymerization of the monomers is studied by diferential scanning calorimetry and the thermal stability of the polymers is ascertained by thermogravimetric analysis.

Detections of C-13-substituted C3H2 in astronomical sources

The more abundant C-13-substituted variant of the new interstellar ring molecule, C3H2, has been detected in TMC-1 and Sgr B2, and a tentative detection has been made in IRC + 10216. The fractional abundance relative to H2 is 1-2 x 10 to the -8th in TMC-1, a value similar to that of HCN. In Sgr B2, the C-12 species shows a self-absorbed profile and the relative abundance of C3H2 is about an order of magnitude less than in TMC-1. In IRC + 10216, the fractional abundance of C3H2 is an order of magnitude greater than that in TMC-1.

Procedures for using signals from one sensor as substitutes for signals of another

Long-term monitoring of surface conditions may require a transfer from using data from one satellite sensor to data from a different sensor having different spectral characteristics. Two general procedures for spectral signal substitution are described in this paper, a principal-components procedure and a complete multivariate regression procedure. They are evaluated through a simulation study of five satellite sensors (MSS, TM, AVHRR, CZCS, and HRV). For illustration, they are compared to another recently described procedure for relating AVHRR and MSS signals. The multivariate regression procedure is shown to be best. TM can accurately emulate the other sensors, but they, on the other hand, have difficulty in accurately emulating its shortwave infrared bands (TM5 and TM7).

Optical production systems using neural networks and symbolic substitution

Two optical implementations of production systems are advanced. The production systems operate on a knowledge base where facts and rules are encoded as formulas in propositional calculus. The first implementation is a binary neural network. An analog neural network is used to include reasoning with uncertainties. The second implementation uses a new optical symbolic substitution correlator. This implementation is useful when a set of similar situations has to be handled in parallel on one processor.

Preparation and characteristics of superconducting cuprate thin films: Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO4 and substituted Bi-system

Characteristics of the electron-doped-type Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO4 systems and substituted Bi2(Sr,Ln)3Cu2Oy system were systematically studied using the high quality thin-film samples. The Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO4 thin films with various Ce concentrations, x, were prepared by RF magnetron sputtering on SrTiO3 heated at around 500 C. After subsequent annealing at 1100 C in air, the films showed the c-axis orientation normal to the substrates. By means of the reducing treatment (annealing in a vacuum), superconductivity was induced for the films with 0.14 is less than or equal to x is less than or equal to 0.18. The superconductivity and transport properties of the films were strongly affected by the reducing treatment. The x = 0.15 film exhibited a sharp superconducting transition with zero resistivity at 22 K, in consistent with the diamagnetic properties. The resistivity of the films was fairly low with metallic characteristics, and the sight of the Hall coefficient was negative in the normal state. On the other hand, the normal-state optical measurements showed that the undoped Nd2CuO4 is a semiconductor with a charge transfer gap of 1.3 eV, and that, when Ce ions were doped, a plasma reflection due to the free-carriers came to be seen with the plasma frequency of 1.07 eV for 0.14 is less than or equal to x is less than or equal to 0.18. Moreover, x ray photoemission study revealed that the Cu valence of the film decreased for 2(+) for x = 0 to 1(+) for x = 0.15. These physical properties are in contrast with those of hole-doped-type cuprate superconductors. Bi2(Sr,Ln)3Cu2Oy thin films were also prepared on MgO substrates heated at 600 to 700 C by similar methods. It was found that the growth conditions for Bi-systems with two CuO2 planes were different for each composition and species of lanthanoid in the films. Moreover, preparation of Bi-system with three CuO2 planes was very difficult when lanthanoid atoms were doped in the system. Their electric transport properties and x ray photoemission spectroscopy were investigated. Carrier concentration and Cu valence were discussed with regard to the superconductivity.

Methyl substituted polyimides containing carbonyl and ether connecting groups

Polyimides were prepared from the reaction of aromatic dianhydrides with novel aromatic diamines having carbonyl and ether groups connecting aromatic rings containing pendant methyl groups. The methyl substituent polyimides exhibit good solubility and form tough, strong films. Upon exposure to ultraviolet irradiation and/or heat, the methyl substituted polyimides crosslink to become insoluble.

The photolysis of NH3 in the presence of substituted acetylenes - A possible source of oligomers and HCN on Jupiter

An NMR spectral study is presently conducted of NH3 photolysis in the presence of substituted acetylenes with NMR spectra and gas chromatography. Quantum yields and percentage conversions to products are reported. It is shown that acetylenic hydrocarbons generated during methane photolysis in Jupiter's stratosphere can react with radicals formed by NH3 photolysis to yield nonvolatile, yellow-brown polymers, alkylnitriles, and in due course, HCN, as observed on Jupiter.

Heat of segregation of single substitutional impurities

The method of Bozzolo, Ferrante and Smith (BFS) is applied for the calculation of the heat of segregation of single substitutional impurities in fcc metals. A simple equation for predicting the heat of segregation is derived for the rigid case (no atomic relaxations). The results of including atomic relaxation using a Monte Carlo method are also presented and the results compared with a number of experimental and theoretical results.

Analytical study of blockage- and lift-interference corrections for slotted tunnels obtained by the substitution of an equivalent homogeneous boundary for the discrete slots

The solid-blockage interference for a doublet on the tunnel axis and the boundary interference for lifting wings in circular, rectangular, and two-dimensional slotted tunnels have been calculated by substituting an equivalent homogeneous boundary for the physical boundary of discrete slots. In the case of small wings, the interference calculated with the assumption of homogeneity has been found to be consistent with that calculated for the discrete slots for as few as four slots in a circular tunnel. Furthermore, available experimental results for blockage interference are consistent with the results of the present analysis. As a consequence of the assumption of homogeneity it is possible to express the interference of multislotted tunnels as a function of a single parameter which combines the effects of two physical variables: the ratio of open to total slotted wall perimeter and the number of slots. A curve is presented which permits the rapid evaluation of this parameter and numerical results for lift and blockage interference are plotted against the parameter.
