Experimental Demonstration of Hadron Beam Cooling Using Radio-Frequency Accelerated Electron Bunches

Cooling of beams of gold ions using electron bunches accelerated with radio-frequency systems was recently experimentally demonstrated in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Such an approach is new and opens the possibility of using this technique at higher energies than possible with electrostatic acceleration of electron beams. The challenges of this approach include generation of electron beams suitable for cooling, delivery of electron bunches of the required quality to the cooling sections without degradation of beam angular divergence and energy spread, achieving the required small angles between electron and ion trajectories in the cooling sections, precise velocity matching between the two beams, high-current operation of the electron accelerator, as well as several physics effects related to bunched-beam cooling. Here we report on the first demonstration of cooling hadron beams using this new approach.

Pickup Specifications for Crab Cavity Noise Feedback Pickup

The Electron-Ion Collider will employ crab cavities to compensate for the significant 25 mrad crossing angle, leading to an order of magnitude increase in luminosity. The crab cavity Radio Frequency system will inject low levels of noise to the crabbing field, generating transverse emittance growth and potentially limiting luminosity lifetime. A novel dedicated feedback system acting through the crab cavities has been proposed to mitigate emittance growth. The perfor mance of the noise feedback will largely depend on its pickup precision. In this note we present pickup specifications to achieve the required performance.

Communication enabled fast-acting imbalance reserve

A system and method for control of dispatchable resources on an electrical power distribution grid is disclosed. The disclosed method provides improved response to power imbalance based on a communications signal independent of system frequency. The communication signal provides a feed-forward control of dispatchable power resources. A communications network is employed to generate a signal to dispatchable resources that a power imbalance has occurred. Due to fast response power transmission network interfaces associated with the dispatchable resources, the respective resources respond in significantly less time than feedback controlled conventional generators which depend on line frequency sensing. The rapid response mitigates the impact of power imbalances and enables greater penetrations of converter-interfaced power generation units such as renewable energy sources to be connected to the grid.

Progress on the Proton Power Upgrade at the Spallation Neutron Source

The Proton Power Upgrade Project at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory will double the proton power capability from 1.4 to 2.8 MW. This will be accomplished through an energy increase from 1.0 to 1.3 GeV and a beam current increase from 26 to 38 mA. The energy increase will be accomplished through the addition of 7 cryomodules to the linear accelerator (Linac). The beam current increase will be supported by upgrading several radio-frequency systems in the normal-conducting section of the Linac. Upgrades to the accumulator ring injection and extraction regions will accommodate the increase in beam energy. A new 2-MW-capable target and supporting systems will be developed and installed. Conventional facility upgrades include build-out of the existing klystron gallery and construction of a tunnel stub to facilitate future beam transport to the second target station. The project received approval to proceed with construction in October 2020. Procurements are in progress, and some installation activities have already occurred. Most of the installation will take place during three outages in 2022-2023. The project early finish is planned for 2025.

Computational Modeling, Simulation, and Potential Applications of Optical Stochastic Cooling

With the rising demand for intense particles beams, much research is being conducted in the area of particle beam cooling. One of these methods, called Stochastic Cooling (SC) (developed at CERN in the 1970's), delivered a feedback method to improve the quality and lifetime of circulating proton beams by reducing their 6D phase-space and has been widely implemented in a number of hadron machines. However, traditional stochastic cooling schemes are limited by the bandwidth of microwave frequency systems. Optical Stochastic Cooling (OSC) is a promising extension of the stochastic cooling beam cooling technique. OSC instead uses optical wavelengths which allows for improved control and increased cooling but creates its own technical challenges. This lays out work conducted toward the experimental demonstration of OSC at Fermilab's Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) storage ring. This includes the design and characterization of parts of the optical delay system, the development and validation of a high-fidelity computational model of the OSC process, and the investigations into possible applications of the OSC mechanism to advanced beam manipulations.

This work investigates system level interactions of multi-terminal low frequency high-voltage alternating current (LF-HVac) system using back-to back converters and grid-level 60 Hz system. A co-simulation framework by integrating high- fidelity dynamic model of multi-terminal LF-HVac system in electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation platform and phasor model of IEEE 39 bus system in transient-stability (phasor) program. The co-simulation framework for multi-terminal LF- HVac system with offshore wind integrated in a bulk power system is developed successfully and its steady state and dynamic operation is demonstrated and compared with EMT simulation. The co-simulation results show accurate representation of the dynamic responses with reduced computation burden and time compared to EMT platform.

Cyber-Physical Dynamic System (CPDS) Modeling for Frequency Regulation and AGC Services of Distributed Energy Resources

The substantial integration of renewable energy brings significant challenges to balance the system in real time because of the variability and intermittency of renewable power. For the reliable system operation, the frequency regulation service is used to stabilize the system frequency through automatically balancing the system generation and load. On one hand, with the substantially increasing deployment of renewable energy in electricity system, the requirement of frequency regulation (FR) services increases significantly. On the other hand, the current main resource of FR services, the controllable conventional generation, is continuously decreasing in the system generation mix. This means that in the future high renewable penetration power system, additional and alternative reliable FR services providers such as distributed energy storage (DES) resources should be explored. Although the capability of utility-scale energy storage to provide FR services has been demonstrated, the integrated control and dynamic modeling of distributed energy resource (DER) providing frequency regulation grid services has been rarely explored. There are several challenges to adopt DERs to provide reliable grid services as illustrated in FERC 755. First, the distributed installation of DES requires a comprehensive cyber-physical dynamic system (CPDS) modeling to fully consider the impacts of the communication latency variability on its real time FR provision capability. Unlike the conventional generators, there are two-layer communication between DERs and system operators which increase the communication delay. Second, unlike the conventional generators whose dynamic models have been comprehensively studied, the difference among individual DER components' power-dynamic characteristic brings challenges in the accurate dynamic AGC modeling of its power-frequency relationship. Third, the temporal dependent state of charge uncertainty of DERs challenges DERs' power and frequency regulation capacities scheduling in the look-ahead generation scheduling. Therefore, the aggregator should optimize the frequency regulation provision from individual DER in real time. To overcome these challenges, this project proposes a cyber-physical dynamic system (CPDS) model to handle the uncertainty of DERs two-layer communication latency and power dynamics. The variability of DERs' communication delay and dynamic constraints will be comprehensively modeled. The DERs' AGC model with communication delay is designed to validate DESs' frequency regulation services. Like current performance-based frequency regulation evaluation, the delivery of DERs' frequency regulation will be assessed through post-analysis of the actual AGC response with respect to the AGC control signal from system operators. Consequently, the reliability improvement with DERs providing reliable frequency regulation services can be evaluated from a comprehensive perspective considering all the dynamics of communication and power.

Performance and characterization of the SPT-3G digital frequency-domain multiplexed readout system using an improved noise and crosstalk model

The third-generation South Pole Telescope camera (SPT-3G) improves upon its predecessor (SPTpol) by an order of magnitude increase in detectors on the focal plane. The technology used to read out and control these detectors, digital frequency-domain multiplexing (DfMUX), is conceptually the same as used for SPTpol, but extended to accommodate more detectors. A nearly 5× expansion in the readout operating bandwidth has enabled the use of this large focal plane, and SPT-3G performance meets the forecasting targets relevant to its science objectives. However, the electrical dynamics of the higher-bandwidth readout differ from predictions based on models of the SPTpol system due to the higher frequencies used and parasitic impedances associated with new cryogenic electronic architecture. To address this, we present an updated derivation for electrical crosstalk in higher-bandwidth DfMUX systems and identify two previously uncharacterized contributions to readout noise, which become dominant at high bias frequency. The updated crosstalk and noise models successfully describe the measured crosstalk and readout noise performance of SPT-3G. These results also suggest specific changes to warm electronics component values, wire-harness properties, and SQUID parameters, to improve the readout system for future experiments using DfMUX, such as the LiteBIRD space telescope.

A Deep Reinforcement Learning-based Reserve Optimization in Active Distribution Systems for Tertiary Frequency Regulation

Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)Orders 841 and 2222 have recommended that distributed energy resources (DERs) should participate in energy and reserve markets; therefore, a mechanism needs to be developed to facilitate DERs’ participation at the distribution level. Although the available reserve from a single distribution system may not be sufficient for tertiary frequency regulation, stacked and coordinated contributions from several distribution systems can enable them participate in tertiary frequency regulation at scale. This paper proposes a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based approach for optimization of requested aggregated reserves by system operators among the clusters of DERs. The co-optimization of cost of reserve, distribution network loss, and voltage regulation of the feeders are considered while optimizing the reserves among participating DERs. The proposed framework adopts deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG), which is an algorithm based on an actor-critic method. The effectiveness of the proposed method for allocating reserves among DERs is demonstrated through case studies on a modified IEEE 34-node distribution system.

Frequency Resilience Enhancement for Power Systems with High Penetration of Grid-Forming Inverters

Abstract—Grid following inverter-based renewable generation has replaced conventional generation in recent years, resulting in lower system inertia. The frequency resilience in such a lower inertia system is critical for emergency mitigation. In this paper, we propose a resilience metric based on frequency recovery to quantitatively represent system resilience in terms of the rate of change of frequency. Application of grid-forming converters provides a means to improve system resilience by providing virtual inertia. An under-frequency load shedding strategy is applied to further support frequency recovery in cases with high penetration of grid-forming inverters. Case studies are designed and performed in a modified IEEE 9-bus test system using the PSCAD/EMTDC platform. Simulation results demonstrate the validity of the proposed resilience metric and the effectiveness of the strategy for reducing frequency excursion in inverter-based power systems. citation: J. Combined Force-Frequency Sampling for Simulation of Systems Having Rugged Free Energy Landscapes.

An adaptive, machine learning-based sampling method is presented for simulation of systems having rugged, multidimensional free energy landscapes. The method's main strength resides in its ability to learn both from the frequency of visits to distinct states and the generalized force estimates that arise in a system as it evolves in phase space. This is accomplished by introducing a self-integrating artificial neural network, which generates an estimate of the free energy directly from its derivatives. The usefulness of the proposed combined approach is examined in the context of two concrete examples, namely, an alanine dipeptide molecule in water and a polymer diffusing through a narrow pore. This new method is found to be robust, faster, and more accurate than approaches that rely only on frequency-based or generalized force-based estimations. After combining the proposed approach with overfill protection and support for sparse data storage and training, the method is shown to be more effective than comparable, previously available techniques and capable of scaling efficiently to larger numbers of collective variables.

Fault Clearing Operation in Low-Frequency High-Voltage AC Systems

Abstract—Low-frequency high-voltage ac (LF-HVac) system has been proposed as an alternative to HVdc and HVac systems to reduce transmission losses and improve grid flexibility. LF-HVac system employs back-to-back (BTB) converters to interconnect and control the voltage and power interchange between two power grid operating at different frequencies. While there are multiple studies on LF-HVac system in the literature, the fault clearing method in the LF-HVac system has not been analyzed. Therefore, this paper focuses on fault clearing operation in LFHVac system and proposes a novel method to reduce fault current by changing operating frequency of power source and converter. The performance of the proposed method is validated using detailed models of BTB converters developed in PSCAD/EMTDC. The ability to change operating frequency at the onset of a fault condition allows breakers to rapidly clear the fault and recloses. The results obtained by using the proposed method substantially diminish the fault current.

Control of energy storage to reduce electric power system off-nominal frequency deviations

A hybrid power generation system is formed by the combination of an energy storage system (ESS) and a rotating synchronous power generator (SPG). Energy is stored in or released from the ESS in response to measurements of the at least one angle parameter, selected from rotor, torque, or power angle of the SPG, to provide active frequency damping of electrical power output. The control of ESS energy exchange increases the stabilizing impact of the SPG inertia on the frequency of electricity in an electrical network or power grid. The hybrid power generation system can have an effective equal area criterion for stability limit that is greater than that of the SPG operating without the ESS. The hybrid power generation system can enable the electrical network to have a greater proportion of variable or distributed energy resource (DER) power generation systems without otherwise exceeding stability limits.

Compensation of residual amplitude modulation fluctuations in an optoelectronic system for laser radiation frequency stabilisation

Fluctuations of residual amplitude modulation in a scheme of laser frequency stabilisation by a Fabry – Perot cavity reduce the frequency stability of the laser systems intended for interrogating clock transitions of atoms and ions. The dependences of the residual amplitude modulation on a temperature of the waveguide-based electro-optical modulator used for modulating the radiation phase and on polarisation of the radiation are measured. The parameters are found, at which the influence of the residual amplitude modulation on the frequency stability is minimal. A system for active compensation is created, which reduces the contribution of fluctuations of residual amplitude modulation to the instability down to 2.1 × 10{sup −16}, which makes it possible to reach the thermal noise limit of a silicon cryogenic cavity. Fast and Accurate Frequency Response Estimation for Large Power System Disturbances Using Second Derivative of Frequency Data

Accurate Frequency Response Estimation (FRE) is critical to reliability risk management of large power system disturbances. This letter proposes a measurement-driven approach for FRE by calculating the second derivative of frequency from synchrophasor data. Compared with conventional methods, the proposed method has major advantages of low computational burden and high accuracy, which makes it appropriate for real-time FRE in bulk power systems. The effectiveness of this method is validated with actual synchrophasor data on 96 confirmed historical power system disturbances in the U.S. eastern interconnection.

Adaptive PV Frequency Control Strategy Based on Real-time Inertia Estimation

The declining cost of solar Photovoltaics (PV) generation is driving its worldwide deployment. As conventional generation with large rotating masses is being replaced by renewable energy such as PV, the power system’s inertia will be affected. As a result, the system’s frequency may vary more dramatically in the case of a disturbance, and the frequency nadir may be low enough to trigger protection relays such as under-frequency load shedding. The existing frequency-watt function mandated in power inverters cannot provide grid frequency support in a loss-of-generation event, as PV plants usually do not have power reserves. Here, a novel adaptive PV frequency control strategy is proposed to reserve the minimum power required for grid frequency support. A machine learning model is trained to predict system frequency response under varying system conditions, and an adaptive allocation of PV headroom reserves is made based on the machine learning model as well as real-time system conditions including inertia. Case studies show the proposed control method meets the frequency nadir requirements using minimal power reserves compared to a fixed headroom control approach.
