Silver(I) Supported Liquid Membranes for Selective Ethylene Recovery from Mixed-Gas Streams of Tandem CO 2 Electrolysis

Large-scale olefin separations from unreacted paraffins and other byproduct gases are primarily done by energy-intensive cryogenic distillation processes at refineries. Silver(I) supported liquid membranes (Ag SLMs) can be implemented at smaller production scales of ethylene (C 2 H 4 ), a critical industrial chemical, such as its electrocatalytic (EC) production from CO 2 . Challenges of EC C 2 H 4 production mainly stem from reducing gases like hydrogen (H 2 ), where the redox reactions pertinent to Ag(I) facilitators diminish olefin transport. Herein we report that aqueous Ag(I) solution in a composite Ag SLM can operate in mixed-gas conditions containing H 2 gas utilizing reduced titania compounds, such as titanium(III) oxide (Ti 2 O 3 ). Embedding Ti 2 O 3 in the polydimethylsiloxane layer of Ag SLM assisted in selectively separating C 2 H 4 from mixed-gas feed streams related to CO 2 electrolysis containing H 2 . The direct exposure of a mixed-gas stream containing C 2 H 4 , CO 2 , CO, N 2 , and CH 4 with as high as 50 vol % H 2 maintained excellent C 2 H 4 separations for 7 days of continuous operation. The Ag SLM provided effective separations of C 2 H 4 from CO (at detection limits), CH 4 (selectivity ratio (α) = 20–30), and H 2 (α = ∼20), but C 2 H 4 from CO 2 (α = 2–4) revealed a slightly lower separation. These data show that aqueous Ag(I) solution(s) used in the SLMs can separate C 2 H 4 for extended periods, even under highly reducing gas conditions. Also, we report C 2 H 4 recovery from the gas mixture produced in the EC CO 2 reduction process. In conclusion, the Ag SLM gave C 2 H 4 selective separation from a five-component complex mixed-gas stream, relevant to tandem CO 2 electrolysis.

AutoTandemML: Active Learning Enhanced Tandem Neural Networks for Inverse Design Problems

Inverse design in science and engineering involves determining optimal design parameters that achieve desired performance outcomes, a process often hindered by the complexity and high dimensionality of design spaces, leading to significant computational costs. To tackle this challenge, we propose a novel hybrid approach that combines active learning with Tandem Neural Networks to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of solving inverse design problems. Active learning allows to selectively sample the most informative data points, reducing the required dataset size without compromising accuracy. We investigate this approach using three benchmark problems: airfoil inverse design, photonic surface inverse design, and scalar boundary condition reconstruction in diffusion partial differential equations. We demonstrate that integrating active learning with Tandem Neural Networks outperforms standard approaches across the benchmark suite, achieving better accuracy with fewer training samples.

Low-bandgap mixed tin–lead iodide perovskites with reduced methylammonium for simultaneous enhancement of solar cell efficiency and stability

High-performance perovskite/perovskite tandem solar cells require high-efficiency and stable low-bandgap perovskite subcells. State-of-the-art low-bandgap mixed tin–lead iodide perovskite solar cells exhibit either a high power-conversion efficiency or improved stability, but not both. In this article we report a two-step bilayer interdiffusion growth process to simultaneously meet both requirements for formamidinium-based low-bandgap mixed tin–lead iodide perovskite solar cells. The bilayer interdiffusion growth process allows for the formation of high-quality and large-grained perovskite films with only 10 mol% volatile methylammonium. Additionally, one-dimensional pyrrolidinium perovskite was applied to passivate the perovskite film and improve the junction quality, which resulted in a carrier lifetime of 1.1 µs and an open circuit voltage of 0.865 V for our perovskite film and device with a bandgap of 1.28 eV. Our strategies enabled a power-conversion efficiency of 20.4% for low-bandgap perovskite solar cells under AM 1.5G illumination. More importantly, an encapsulated device can retain 92% of its initial efficiency after 450 h of continuous 1 sun illumination.

Development of a continuous synthesis process for carbamazepine using validated in-line Raman spectroscopy and kinetic modelling for disturbance simulation

Mitigation of failure modes in the continuous synthesis (CS) of a drug substance (DS) has the potential to widen the adoption of continuous manufacturing (CM) technologies by the pharmaceutical industry. Here, this work demonstrates the development of a robust continuous process for the synthesis of carbamazepine (CBZ), an essential medicine as per the World Health Organization (WHO), facilitated by kinetic modelling and monitored by in-line Raman spectroscopy. Accurate kinetic modelling and the use of validated process analytical technology (PAT) models for quantitative measurement were found to play an important role in developing CS of drug substances. Kinetic data for the formation of CBZ from iminostilbene (ISB) were collected by batch reaction sampling and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. A non-linear solver and iterative method was applied to determine two sets of Arrhenius parameters simultaneously for the reaction system by minimizing the standard error of the model fit. The start-up and dynamic equilibrium stages for the CS of CBZ using a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) were modelled based on the batch kinetic data and employed to optimize conversion and simulate process disturbances. An in-line Raman spectroscopy method was successfully developed, validated, and integrated to determine the concentrations of CBZ and ISB within the operating range for the CS. The CS kinetic model was evaluated experimentally from startup to dynamic equilibrium over 10 residence times with monitoring by HPLC and in-line Raman spectroscopy. The developed kinetic model in tandem with in-line Raman spectroscopy successfully predicted disturbances due to changes in process variables and can serve as a useful tool in the future design of advanced process control strategies for the continuous synthesis of CBZ.

ENVnet provides a global molecular resource of dissolved organic matter

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is an important component of Earth's carbon cycle and one of the planet's most chemically diverse pools, yet the molecular structures of its constituents remain largely unresolved. This limitation has hindered our ability to link DOM composition to microbial processes and ecosystem function. Here we present ENVnet, a global molecular repository built from tandem mass spectrometry data collected across 13 terrestrial and aquatic environment types, including 419 newly generated samples that expand publicly available DOM metabolomics data and cover previously underrepresented environments. By computationally deconvolving chimeric mass spectra, a longstanding challenge in environmental metabolomics, we recover high-quality fragmentation data for >22,000 distinct molecular features (defined by a specific precursor mass and fragmentation pattern). Using ENVnet, we uncover conserved and environment-specific molecular patterns in DOM composition and underlying biogeochemical processes. We also use molecular features encoded in ENVnet to train predictive models of DOM persistence, allowing molecular-level assessment of microbial turnover in independent systems.

Plasma proteomic biomarkers of physical frailty in heart failure: a propensity score matched discovery-based pilot study

Background: Physical frailty is highly prevalent in heart failure (HF), but we lack an understanding of the underlying pathophysiology. Proteomics evaluation of plasma samples may elucidate potential mechanisms and biomarkers of physical frailty in HF. We aimed to identify plasma proteomic biomarkers that are differentially expressed between physically frail and non physically frail adults with HF. Methods: This was a secondary analysis of a subset of data and plasma samples from a study of frailty among patients with New York Heart Association (NYHA) Functional Classification I-IV HF. Physical frailty was measured using the Frailty Phenotype Criteria. Propensity score matching was used to match pairs of physically frail (n = 20) vs. non-physically frail (n = 20) patients on clinical characteristics. Plasma samples were processed using a sensitive liquid chromatography mass spectrometry platform, utilizing a multiplexed tandem mass tag-labeled quantitative proteomics approach. Differentially expressed proteins were quantified individually using paired t tests with associated log fold change of 0.3 and Fisher’s combined p values. Results: The sample (n = 40) was 62.8±16.9 years old, 58% female, and 55% NYHA Class III/IV. Proteomics analysis revealed 7 proteins differentially expressed using full differential criteria: matrix metalloproteinase-14 was downregulated in frailty, and copine-1, low affinity immunoglobulin gamma Fc region receptor III-A and III-B, probable non-functional immunoglobulin kappa variable 2D-24, glutathione S-transferase Mu 1, and argininosuccinate lyase were upregulated in frailty. Conclusions: Proteomic biomarkers related to the immune system, stress response, and detoxification were differentially expressed between physically frail and non-physically frail adults with HF.

Choose Your Own Adventure: Fabrication of Monolithic All-Perovskite Tandem Photovoltaics

Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have transfixed the photovoltaic (PV) community due to their outstanding and tunable optoelectronic properties coupled to demonstrations of high-power conversion efficiencies (PCE) at a range of bandgaps. This has motivated the field to push perovskites to reach the highest possible performance. One way to increase the efficiency is by fabricating multijunction solar cells, which can split the solar spectrum, reducing thermalization loss. Low-cost all-perovskite tandems have a real chance to soon exceed 30% PCE, which could transform the PV industry. Achieving this goal requires the identification of perovskite sub-cells that are both highly efficient and can be effectively integrated. In this review, it is discussed how to navigate the multiple-choice adventure in choosing between the myriad of options and considerations present when deciding what perovskite materials, contact layers, and processing tools to use. Some of the potential fabrication pitfalls often encountered in MHP based tandem PVs are highlighted, so that they can hopefully be avoided in the future.

A unified reaction network on the formation of five-membered ringed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their role in ring expansion processes through radical–radical reactions

Exploiting a chemical microreactor in combination with an isomer-selective product identification through fragment-free photoionization utilizing tunable vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light in tandem with the detection of the ionized molecules by a high resolution reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (Re-TOF-MS), the present investigation reveals molecular mass growth processes to four distinct polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons carrying two six- and one five-membered ring (C 13 H 10 ): 3H-cyclopenta[a]naphthalene, 1H-cyclopenta[b]naphthalene, 1H-cyclopenta[a]naphthalene, and fluorene in the gas phase. Temperatures of 973 and 1023 K simulating conditions in combustion settings along with circumstellar envelopes of carbon-rich stars and planetary nebulae. These reactions highlight the importance of methyl-substituted aromatic reactants (biphenyl, naphthalene) which can be converted to the methylene (–CH 2 ˙) motive by hydrogen abstraction or photolysis. Upon reaction with acetylene, methylene-substituted aromatics carrying a hydrogen atom at the ortho position of the ring can be then converted to cyclopentadiene-annulated aromatics thus providing a versatile pathway to five-membered ring aromatics at elevated temperatures.

Semi-monolithic Integration of All-Chalcopyrite Multijunction Solar Conversion Devices via Thin-Film Bonding and Exfoliation

Here we report on a semi-monolithic integration method to circumvent processing incompatibility between materials of dissimilar classes and combine them into multijunction devices for photovoltaic and photoelectrochemical applications. Proof-of-concept all-chalcopyrite tandems were obtained by consecutive transfer of fully integrated unpatterned 1.85 eV CuGa 3 Se 5 and 1.13 eV CuInGaSe 2 PV stacks from their Mo/soda lime glass substrates onto a new single host substrate. This transfer approach consists of two key steps: (1) bonding of the solar stack (face down) onto a handle (e.g., SnO 2 :F, FTO) using a transparent conductive composite and (2) delamination of the solar stack at the chalcopyrite/Mo interface by employing a wedge-based exfoliation technique. Upon transfer onto FTO, a CuGa 3 Se 5 champion device demonstrated near-coincident photocurrent density-voltage characteristic with a baseline measurement. Then, the exfoliated CuGa 3 Se 5 single-junction stack transferred onto FTO served as the new host onto which a second fully processed CuInGaSe 2 stack was bonded (face down) onto and liberated from its Mo/SLG substrate, leading to a complete transfer of both sub-cells onto one FTO substrate. A champion semi-monolithic tandem device exhibited a power conversion efficiency of 5.04% with an open-circuit voltage, a short-circuit current density, and a fill factor of 1.24 V, 7.19 mA/cm 2 , and 56.7%, respectively. This first-time demonstration of a fully operational semi-monolithic device provides a new avenue to combine thermally, mechanically, and/or chemically incompatible thin-film material classes into tandem photovoltaic and photoelectrochemical devices while maintaining state-of-the-art sub-cell processing.

Haploidy and aneuploidy in switchgrass mediated by misexpression of CENH3

Cross bred species such as switchgrass may benefit from advantageous breeding strategies requiring inbred lines. Doubled haploid production methods offer several ways that these lines can be produced that often involve uniparental genome elimination as the rate limiting step. We have used a centromere-mediated genome elimination strategy in which modified CENH3 is expressed to induce the process. Transgenic tetraploid switchgrass lines coexpressed Cas9, a poly-cistronic tRNA-gRNA tandem array containing eight guide RNAs that target two CENH3 genes, and different chimeric versions of CENH3 with alterations to the N-terminal tail region. Genotyping of CENH3 genes in transgenics identified edits including frameshift mutations and deletions in one or both copies of the two CENH3 genes. Flow cytometry of T 1 seedlings identified two T 0 lines that produced five haploid individuals representing an induction rate of 0.5% and 1.4%. Eight different T0 lines produced aneuploids at rates ranging from 2.1 to 14.6%. A sample of aneuploid lines were sequenced at low coverage and aligned to the reference genome, revealing missing chromosomes and chromosome arms.

Tandem Mass-Selective Cryogenic Digital Ion Traps for Enhanced Cluster Formation

We present the implementation of tandem mass-selective cryogenic ion traps, designed to enhance the range of ion processing capabilities that can be performed prior to spectroscopic interrogation. We show that both the formation of ion clusters and mass filtering steps can be combined in a single cryogenic linear quadrupole ion trap driven by RF square waves. Mass filtering and mass isolation can be achieved by manipulation of the RF frequency and duty cycle. Very importantly, this scheme circumvents the need for high-amplitude RF voltages that can be incompatible with typical cryogenic ion processing conditions. In addition, proper adjustment of the stability boundaries during the clustering process allows for the preferential formation of a specific cluster size rather than a broad distribution of sizes. Lastly, we show that a specific cluster size can be formed, mass-selected, and then transferred to another ion trap for a second completely separate ion processing step. Furthermore, the instrumentation and modular design developed here expand the scope of ionic species and clusters that can be accessed by processing electrosprayed ions.

Biochemical and structural characterization of a sphingomonad diarylpropane lyase for cofactorless deformylation

Lignin valorization is being intensely pursued via tandem catalytic depolymerization and biological funneling to produce single products. In many lignin depolymerization processes, aromatic dimers and oligomers linked by carbon–carbon bonds remain intact, necessitating the development of enzymes capable of cleaving these compounds to monomers. Recently, the catabolism of erythro -1,2-diguaiacylpropane-1,3-diol ( erythro -DGPD), a ring-opened lignin-derived β-1 dimer, was reported in Novosphingobium aromaticivorans . The first enzyme in this pathway, LdpA (formerly LsdE), is a member of the nuclear transport factor 2 (NTF-2)-like structural superfamily that converts erythro -DGPD to lignostilbene through a heretofore unknown mechanism. In this study, we performed biochemical, structural, and mechanistic characterization of the N. aromaticivorans LdpA and another homolog identified in Sphingobium sp. SYK-6, for which activity was confirmed in vivo. For both enzymes, we first demonstrated that formaldehyde is the C 1 reaction product, and we further demonstrated that both enantiomers of erythro -DGPD were transformed simultaneously, suggesting that LdpA, while diastereomerically specific, lacks enantioselectivity. We also show that LdpA is subject to a severe competitive product inhibition by lignostilbene. Three-dimensional structures of LdpA were determined using X-ray crystallography, including substrate-bound complexes, revealing several residues that were shown to be catalytically essential. We used density functional theory to validate a proposed mechanism that proceeds via dehydroxylation and formation of a quinone methide intermediate that serves as an electron sink for the ensuing deformylation. Overall, this study expands the range of chemistry catalyzed by the NTF-2-like protein family to a prevalent lignin dimer through a cofactorless deformylation reaction.

Cost Assessment of Future Tandem Perovskite-Silicon Modules and LCOE Comparison to Silicon Technologies in Europe

Tandem perovskite-silicon (TPS) photovoltaic (PV) technology is a promising pathway for achieving higher efficiencies than those of single-junction crystal-silicon (c-Si) technologies. In this work, a techno-economic assessment of a TPS module is performed considering a viable large-scale manufacturing process for two future scenarios in 2025 and 2030 which allowed us to identify the main cost drivers of the tandem module cost. Furthermore, to analyse the performance of tandem module-based utility-scale PV systems and understand their competitiveness in Europe, the levelized cost of electricity was compared to passivated emitter and rear cell as well as silicon heterojunction based PV systems. The aim of this work is to provide a cost and performance guidance for TPS modules which could contribute to future PV energy systems.

Rapid Sensing to Facilitate Purification of Rare Earth Element-Containing Process Streams Produced Through Membrane-Assisted Solvent Extraction

The development of an economically competitive domestic supply of rare earth elements and yttrium (REY) is necessary for our nation’s economic growth and national security. The achievement of a secure domestic supply of REY requires not only the development of effective processes for recovery of REY from naturally occurring materials and/or recycled products, but also the development of downstream processes for the ultimate production of high-REY content solids. An impediment to the development of such processes is the scarcity of analytical methods that provide rapid determination of the process stream compositions. In this work, a membrane-based extraction process was used to selectively recover REYs from a dilute solution in the presence of much higher concentrations of Ca and Al. In tandem, the use of a portable spectrometer equipped with an immobilized zinc adeninate benzene tricarboxylate metal-organic framework sensing material makes possible the rapid detection of the presence of ppm concentrations of Tb and Eu in both weakly acidic and strongly acidic process streams within minutes. A solvent extraction processing time of 15-60 min maximized REY selectivity over gangue ions while achieving up to 80% REY and minimal gangue ion recovery. Taken together, these experiments highlight not only an innovative method for REY purification but also the importance of inexpensive, portable characterization methods for near real-time analysis of REY content.
