19.32% Efficiency Polymer Solar Cells Enabled by Fine-Tuning Stacking Modes of Y-Type Molecule Acceptors: Synergistic Bromine and Fluorine Substitution of the End Groups

Here, the success of Y6-type nonfullerene small molecule acceptors (NF-SMAs) in polymer solar cells (PSCs) can be attributed to their unique honeycomb stacking style, which leads to favorable thin-film morphologies. The intermolecular interactions related to the crystallization tendency of these NF-SMAs is closely governed by their electron accepting end groups. For example, the high performance Y6 derivative L8-BO (BTP-4F) presents three types of stacking modes in contrast to two stacking modes of Y6. Hence, it is ultimately interesting to obtain more insight on the packing properties and the preferences influenced by chemical modifications such as end group engineering. This work designs and synthesizes asymmetric and symmetric L8-BO derivatives with brominated end groups and explores the stacking preferences in various modes. The asymmetric BTP-3FBr displays an optimized crystallization tendency and thin film morphology, leading to a decent power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.34% in binary devices and a top PCE of 19.32% in ternary devices containing 15 wt% IDIC as the second acceptor.

Developing Efficient Benzene Additives for 19.43% Efficiency of Organic Solar Cells by Crossbreeding Effect of Fluorination and Bromination

Employing volatile solid additives have emerged as a promising method to optimize the morphology and improve the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). However, principles governing the efficient design of solid additives remain elusive. In this work, the programmed fluorination and/or bromination on benzene core to develop efficient additives for OSCs is reported. The programmed fluorination and/or bromination endow the five halogen benzene derivatives, 1,3,5-trifluorobenzene, hexafluorobenzene, 1,3,5-tribromo-2,4,6-trifluorobenzene (TFTB), 1,3,5-tribromobenzene, and hexabromobenzene, with different melting and boiling points, volatility, as well as interactions with the host blend. Studies indicate that the additives with extremely high and low volatility are almost powerless and even detrimental to the morphology evolution. Among them, the combination of fluorine and bromine atoms on TFTB not only enables the more appropriate m.p./b.p. and volatility, but also exerts stronger molecular interactions with the host blend, giving rise to higher ordered molecular packing and more favorable morphology. Importantly, TFTB exhibits good universality to optimize the performances of OSCs with high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs; over 18%) in a group of binary blend systems, and an impressive PCE of 19.43% in the ternary PBTz-F:PM6:L8-BO system.

Atomistic modeling of energy band alignment in CdSeTe surfaces

Atomistic modeling based on Desnity Functional Theory (DFT)- 1/2 method coupled with surface Green’s function has been employed to investigate the energy band alignment results in cadmium selenium telluride (CdSeTe) surfaces. The structural and electronic properties of the bulk ternary alloy were established before cleaving the CdSeTe low index surface facets. The dependency of atomic-scale electronic features on different plane orientations was explored by studying the energy band alignment diagrams in the unreconstructed and reconstructed surfaces. While the low index CdSeTe surface geometry reconstructions replicate the CdTe surface geometries, the energy band alignment features of the unreconstructed and reconstructed CdSeTe surfaces differ from those observed in CdTe low index surfaces. The structurally relaxed reconstructed CdSeTe surface results in purely flat bands as opposed to an internal cusp feature observed in CdTe surfaces. The presence of an internal energy cusp in CdTe(111) surfaces is expected to play a key role in enhancing the hole charge transport towards the back of CdTe-only solar cell device and the absence of such feature in CdSeTe surface may explain one of the reason for the lower performance of CdSeTe-only solar cell seen experimentally.

Tetrahydrofuran Processable Organic Solar Cells with 19.45% Efficiency Realized by Introducing High Molecular Dipole Unit Into the Terpolymer

Developing organic solar cells (OSCs) processable with halogen‐free, non‐aromatic solvents is crucial for practical applications, yet challenging due to the limited solubility of most photoactive materials. Here, this study introduces high‐performance terpolymers processable in tetrahydrofuran (THF) by incorporating dithienophthalimide (DPI) into the PM6 backbone. DPI extends the absorption band, lowers HOMO levels, and improves THF solubility and film crystallinity through its large dipole moment effect. Optimal PBD‐10:L8‐BO devices processed with THF achieved a competitive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.79%, approaching chloroform‐processed devices (19.04%). By introducing PBTz‐F as a second donor, ternary OSCs reached an impressive 19.45% PCE when processed with THF. This improvement stems from enhanced photon generation, improved morphology, better charge transport, longer exciton lifetimes, efficient charge dissociation and collection, and suppressed recombination. These PCEs of 18.79% and 19.45% for binary and ternary blend OSCs, respectively, represent the highest reported efficiencies for OSCs processed with halogen‐free, non‐aromatic solvents. This work demonstrates significant progress in eco‐friendly OSC fabrication, paving the way for more sustainable and commercially viable organic photovoltaic technologies.

Electrochemical Mitigation of Corrosion in Concentrated Solar Power Systems

To make concentrating solar power (CSP) cost-competitive, the next generation of CSP plants will increase efficiency by operating at a higher temperature, which will require a new thermal energy storage material. One option for the thermal energy storage material is a ternary chloride salt that is stable at the temperatures required, but reacts easily with the atmosphere to form MgOHCl, a corrosive impurity. If left unchecked, this impurity will corrode the containment alloys, potentially leading to dangerous spills. We are working to design an electrochemical purification cell to remove MgOHCl from the molten chloride salt during CSP plant operation.

Developing Benzodithiophene-Free donor polymer for 19.36% efficiency Green-Solvent-Processable organic solar cells

Here, in this work, a newly benzodithiophene-free D-A polymer donor, named PDTP-BDD, was developed for realizing green-solvent processed high-performance OSCs. By bridging two electron-rich unit of dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyridin-5(4H)-one (DTP) and electron-deficient benzo[1,2-c:4,5c']dithiophene-4,8-dione (BDD) with thiophene units, PDTP-BDD possesses high absorption in the short wavelength range and a deep HOMO energy level. The rigid building blocks also make PDTP-BDD has strong aggregation and poor solubility in common halogen-free solvents (such as o-xylene) at room temperature, but it is readily dissolved and disaggregated at high temperature (120 °C). After cooling down to a lower temperature (60 °C), PDTP-BDD self-assembled and pre-aggregated slowly in the solution at a long time. By employing a delayed processing strategy in the layer-by-layer processed OSCs (LbL-OSCs), an optimized fibril network of the underling layer was realized, enabling the permeation of acceptor into the donor network. The optimized PDTP-BDD/L8-BO-based LbL-OSCs realized a high PCE of 18.42 %. By adding a small amount of D18 to further optimize the PDTP-BDD fibril network, an impressive PCE of 19.36 % was achieved finally in the resulting ternary LbL-OSCs, which is the highest value for OSCs processed by halogen-free solvents.

Cost-Efficiency balanced polymer acceptors based on lowly fused Dithienopyrrolo[3, 2b]benzothiadiazole for 16.04% efficiency All-Polymer solar cells

All-polymer solar cells (All-PSCs) attracted increasing attention due to the outstanding thermal stability and mechanical properties. The current prevailing polymer acceptors for most efficient All-PSCs are polymerized high-performance small molecule acceptor of Y6, i.e. the dithienothiopheno[3,2-b]-pyrrolobenzothiadiazole (BTTP) based polymers. However, the BTTP-based polymers often show relatively shallow highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level and high figure of merit (FOM), which limit the rational selection of paring donor polymers. Herein, we presented two low-cost polymer acceptors, namely as BTP-T2F and BTP-2T2F, based on lowly fused dithienopyrrolo[3,2b]benzothiadiazole (BTP, removing two thiophene cycles from BTTP). Here the BTP-based polymers exhibited deeper HOMO levels around –5.90 eV, which could match variable donor polymers with low-lying HOMO levels, such as low-cost PTQ10. Additionally, the synthesis was significantly simplified compared to BTTP-based polymers. A power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.32% was achieved in binary blend device containing PTQ10:BTP-2T2F. By adding a miscibility-enhancing PBDTCl-TPD as a third component, the top PCE of 16.04% was obtained in ternary blend All-PSCs. Combining the high device performance and low estimated cost, extraordinary cost-efficiency balance was realized within these BTP-based polymer acceptors.

Pseudo-bilayer architecture enables high-performance organic solar cells with enhanced exciton diffusion length

Solution-processed organic solar cells (OSCs) are a promising candidate for next-generation photovoltaic technologies. However, the short exciton diffusion length of the bulk heterojunction active layer in OSCs strongly hampers the full potential to be realized in these bulk heterojunction OSCs. Herein, we report high-performance OSCs with a pseudo-bilayer architecture, which possesses longer exciton diffusion length benefited from higher film crystallinity. This feature ensures the synergistic advantages of efficient exciton dissociation and charge transport in OSCs with pseudo-bilayer architecture, enabling a higher power conversion efficiency (17.42%) to be achieved compared to those with bulk heterojunction architecture (16.44%) due to higher short-circuit current density and fill factor. A certified efficiency of 16.31% is also achieved for the ternary OSC with a pseudo-bilayer active layer. Our results demonstrate the excellent potential for pseudo-bilayer architecture to be used for future OSC applications.

Benzo[d]thiazole Based Wide Bandgap Donor Polymers Enable 19.54% Efficiency Organic Solar Cells Along with Desirable Batch-to-Batch Reproducibility and General Applicability

The limited selection pool of high-performance wide bandgap (WBG) polymer donors is a bottleneck problem of the nonfullerene acceptor (NFA) based organic solar cells (OSCs) that impedes the further improvement of their photovoltaic performances. In this work, a series of new WBG polymers, namely PH-BTz, PS-BTz, PF-BTz, and PCl-BTz, are developed by using the bicyclic difluoro-benzo[d]thiazole (BTz) as the acceptor block and benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene (BDT) derivatives as the donor units. By introducing S, F, and Cl atoms to the alkylthienyl sidechains on BDT, the resulting polymers exhibit lowered energy levels and enhanced aggregation properties. The fluorinated PBTz-F not only exhibits a low-lying HOMO level, but also has stronger face-on packing order and results in more uniform fibril-like interpenetrating networks in the related PF-BTz:L8-BO blend. A high-power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.57% is achieved. Moreover, PBTz-F also exhibits a good batch-to-batch reproducibility and general applicability. In addition, ternary blend OSCs based on the host PBTz-F:L8-BO blend and PM6 guest donor exhibits a further enhanced PCE of 19.54%, which is among the highest values of OSCs.

Crossbreeding Effect of Chalcogenation and Iodination on Benzene Additives Enables Optimized Morphology and 19.68% Efficiency of Organic Solar Cells

Volatile solid additives have attracted increasing attention in optimizing the morphology and improving the performance of currently dominated non-fullerene acceptor-based organic solar cells (OSCs). However, the underlying principles governing the rational design of volatile solid additives remain elusive. Herein, a series of efficient volatile solid additives are successfully developed by the crossbreeding effect of chalcogenation and iodination for optimizing the morphology and improving the photovoltaic performances of OSCs. Five benzene derivatives of 1,4-dimethoxybenzene (DOB), 1-iodo-4-methoxybenzene (OIB), 1-iodo-4-methylthiobenzene (SIB), 1,4-dimethylthiobenzene (DSB) and 1,4-diiodobenzene (DIB) are systematically studied, where the widely used DIB is used as the reference. The effect of chalcogenation and iodination on the overall property is comprehensively investigated, which indicates that the versatile functional groups provided various types of noncovalent interactions with the host materials for modulating the morphology. Among them, SIB with the combination of sulphuration and iodination enabled more appropriate interactions with the host blend, giving rise to a highly ordered molecular packing and more favorable morphology. As a result, the binary OSCs based on PM6:L8-BO and PBTz-F:L8-BO as well as the ternary OSCs based on PBTz-F:PM6:L8-BO achieved impressive high PCEs of 18.87%, 18.81% and 19.68%, respectively, which are among the highest values for OSCs.

π-Extension and chlorination of non-fullerene acceptors enable more readily processable and sustainable high-performance organic solar cells

Organic solar cells (OSCs) processed without halogenated solvents and complex treatments are essential for future commercialization. Herein, we report three novel small molecule acceptors (NFAs) consisting of a Y6-like core but with π-extended naphthalene with progressively more chlorinated end-capping groups and a longer branched chain on the Nitrogen atom. These NFAs exhibit good solubilities in non-chlorinated organic solvents, broad optical absorptions, close π-π stacking distances (3.63–3.84 Å), and high electron mobilities (~10 -3 cm 2 V -1 s -1 ). Further, the o-xylene processed and as-cast binary devices using PM6 as the donor polymer exhibit a PCE increasing upon progressive chlorination of the naphthalene end-capping group from 8.93% for YN to 14.38% for YN-Cl to 15.00% for YN-2Cl. Furthermore similarly processed ternary OSCs were fabricated by employing YN-Cl and YN-2Cl as the third component of PM6:CH1007 blends (PCE = 15.75%). Compared to all binary devices, the ternary PM6:CH1007:YN-Cl (1:1:0.2) and PM6:CH1007:YN-2Cl (1:1:0.2) cells exhibit significantly improved PCEs of 16.49% and 15.88%, respectively, which are among the highest values reported to date for non-halogenated solvent processed OSCs without using any additives and blend post-deposition treatments.

Eco–Friendly Solvent Engineered CsPbI 2.77 Br 0.23 Ink for Large–Area and Scalable High Performance Perovskite Solar Cells

The performance of large-area perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has been assessed for typical compositions, such as methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI 3 ), using a blade coater, slot-die coater, solution shearing, ink-jet printing, and thermal evaporation. However, the fabrication of large-area all-inorganic perovskite films is not well developed. This study develops, for the first time, an eco-friendly solvent engineered all-inorganic perovskite ink of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as a main solvent with the addition of acetonitrile (ACN), 2-methoxyethanol (2-ME), or a mixture of ACN and 2-ME to fabricate large-area CsPbI 2.77 Br 0.23 films with slot-die coater at low temperatures (40–50 °C). The perovskite phase, morphology, defect density, and optoelectrical properties of prepared with different solvent ratios are thoroughly examined and they are correlated with their respective colloidal size distribution and solar cell performance. Here, the optimized slot-die-coated CsPbI 2.77 Br 0.23 perovskite film, which is prepared from the eco-friendly binary solvents dimethyl sulfoxide:acetonitrile (0.8:0.2 v/v), demonstrates an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.05%. Moreover, the device maintains ≈91% of its original PCE after 1 month at 20% relative humidity in the dark. It is believed that this study will accelerate the reliable manufacturing of perovskite devices.

Correlation of Dimer-Linker-Induced Conformational Lock with Nonradiative Energy Loss in Organic Solar Cells

The efficiencies of dimer-based devices still lag those of their small molecule-based counterparts. This is primarily due to the considerable dihedrals in the dimer skeleton, which compromises the molecular packing, thus influencing the charge generation and nonradiative voltage loss (ΔV oc,nr ). Herein, we developed two dimeric acceptors with varied π-linkers to investigate the influence of linker-induced conformational lock on ΔV oc,nr . We find that the helically lapped O-shaped dimer delivers better intermolecular packing than the planar S-shaped one that incorporates a bulkier π-linker. However, its planar skeleton is instead more favorable for forming a compact and ordered stacking with the host acceptor in ternary blend. This possibly promotes exciton dissociation, thus reducing the nonradiative decay of excited states. Moreover, its longer exciton lifetime could offer additional charge-transfer channels. Finally, these contributions effectively minimize ΔV oc,nr to 0.195 eV, while delivering a high efficiency approaching 20% in the derived ternary device.

On the Interplay between CT and Singlet Exciton Emission in Organic Solar Cells with Small Driving Force and Its Impact on Voltage Loss

The interplay between free charge carriers, charge transfer (CT) states and singlet excitons (S 1 ) determines the recombination pathway and the resulting open circuit voltage (V OC ) of organic solar cells. By combining a well-aggregated low bandgap polymer with different blend ratios of the fullerenes PCBM and ICBA, the energy of the CT state (E CT ) is varied by 130 meV while leaving the S 1 energy of the polymer (E S 1 ) unaffected. It is found that the polymer exciton dominates the radiative properties of the blend when approaches E CT , while the V OC remains limited by the non-radiative decay of the CT state. It is concluded that an increasing strength of the exciton in the optical spectra of organic solar cells will generally decrease the non-radiative voltage loss because it lowers the radiative V OC limit (V OC,rad ), but not because it is more emissive. The analysis further suggests that electronic coupling between the CT state and the S 1 will not improve the V OC , but rather reduce the V OC,rad . It is anticipated that only at very low CT state absorption combined with a fairly high CT radiative efficiency the solar cell benefit from the radiative properties of the singlet excitons.

Effects of Hydrogen on the Phase Relations in Fe-FeS at Pressures of Mars-Sized Bodies

The large radius, and therefore low density, of the Martian core found in the InSight mission data analysis highlights the importance of considering other light elements besides sulfur (S), which has been considered as the main light element for Mars for decades. Hydrogen (H) is abundant in the solar system and becomes siderophile at high pressures. Although Fe-S and Fe-H systems have been studied individually, the Fe-S-H ternary system has only been investigated up to 16 GPa and 1723 K. We have investigated the Fe-S-H system at pressures and temperatures (P-T) relevant to the cores of Mars-sized planets (up to 45 GPa and well above the melting temperature of FeS) in the laser-heated diamond anvil cell combined with in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Here we found that sufficient hydrogen leads to the disappearance of Fe 3 S at high P-T. Instead, separate Fe-H and Fe-S phases appear at 23–35 GPa. At pressures above 35 GPa, we found a new phase appearing while Fe-S phases disappear and Fe-H phases remain. Our analysis indicates that the new phase likely contains both S and H in the crystal structure (tentatively FeS x H y where x ≈ 1 and y ≈ 1). The observed pressure-dependent changes in the phase relation may be important for understanding the structure and dynamics of the Martian core and the cores of Mars-sized exoplanets.

Green-Solvent Processed Blade-Coating Organic Solar Cells with an Efficiency Approaching 19% Enabled by Alkyl-Tailored Acceptors

Power-conversion-efficiencies (PCEs) of organic solar cells (OSCs) in laboratory, normally processed by spin-coating technology with toxic halogenated solvents, have reached over 19%. However, there is usually a marked PCE drop when the blade-coating and/or green-solvents toward large-scale printing are used instead, which hampers the practical development of OSCs. Here, a new series of N-alkyl-tailored small molecule acceptors named YR-SeNF with a same molecular main backbone are developed by combining selenium-fused central-core and naphthalene-fused end-group. Thanks to the N-alkyl engineering, NIR-absorbing YR-SeNF series show different crystallinity, packing patterns, and miscibility with polymeric donor. The studies exhibit that the molecular packing, crystallinity, and vertical distribution of active layer morphologies are well optimized by introducing newly designed guest acceptor associated with tailored N-alkyl chains, providing the improved charge transfer dynamics and stability for the PM6:L8-BO:YR-SeNF-based OSCs. As a result, a record-high PCE approaching 19% is achieved in the blade-coating OSCs fabricated from a green-solvent o-xylene with high-boiling point. Notably, ternary OSCs offer robust operating stability under maximum-power-point tracking and well-keep > 80% of the initial PCEs for even over 400 h. Our alkyl-tailored guest acceptor strategy provides a unique approach to develop green-solvent and blade-coating processed high-efficiency and operating stable OSCs, which paves a way for industrial development.

Enhancing exciton diffusion by reducing energy disorder in organic solar cells

A highly crystalline, highly emissive, and wide-bandgap polymer AC174 with an extremely small Stokes shift is designed and synthesized in water, and is used to reduce system energetic disorder and increase the exciton diffusion length of the classical PM6:Y6 blend system. AC174 is incompatible with PM6 and Y6, improves molecular packing, and reduces system energetic disorder. The long-range Förster resonance energy transfer between the donor and acceptor is enhanced, and the exciton diffusion constant and exciton lifetime are increased, leading to a longer exciton diffusion length and more efficient exciton dissociation and charge generation. The addition of AC174 simultaneously improves the open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current density (J SC ) and fill factor of PM6:Y6 devices; especially the highest internal quantum efficiency approaches 100%, and the highest J SC is 28.4 mA cm –2 . Ternary devices with 5% AC174 in the donors achieve a power conversion efficiency of 17.2%, higher than those of the parent binary devices based on PM6:Y6 (15.9%) and AC174:Y6 (3.24%).

Impact of dipolar molecules on the reliability of organic photovoltaic cells

Blending two non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) to form bulk heterojunctions (BHJs) in ternary organic photovoltaics (OPVs) has been shown to lead to an end-capping exchange reaction that results in the generation of several new dipolar species whose impact on OPV operational stability remains uncertain. Here, we investigate the reliability of a ternary OPV system intentionally blended with dipolar NFA molecules. We reveal that an intrinsic contribution to OPV degradation is the reorganization and reorientation of the dipolar molecules during operation, which leads to an increased dielectric constant (ε r ) of the BHJ. Consequently, the electric field across the BHJ with dipolar molecules decreases compared with that of a non-dipolar BHJ under the same applied voltage, leading to a larger reduction in charge collection efficiency over time. This result has implications on the stability of a range of organic electronic devices containing dipolar molecules.
