Organic Matter Preserved in 3-Billion-Year-Old Mudstones at Gale Crater, Mars

Establishing the presence and state of organic matter, including its possible biosignatures, in martian materials has been an elusive quest, despite limited reports of the existence of organic matter on Mars. We report the in situ detection of organic matter preserved in lacustrine mudstones at the base of the ~3.5-billion-year-old Murray formation at Pahrump Hills, Gale crater, by the Sample Analysis at Mars instrument suite onboard the Curiosity rover. Diverse pyrolysis products, including thiophenic, aromatic, and aliphatic compounds released at high temperatures (500° to 820°C), were directly detected by evolved gas analysis. Thiophenes were also observed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Their presence suggests that sulfurization aided organic matter preservation. At least 50 nanomoles of organic carbon persists, probably as macromolecules containing 5% carbon as organic sulfur molecules.

Introducing Low-Cost Pyrazine Unit into Terpolymer Enables High-Performance Polymer Solar Cells with Efficiency of 18.23%

Recently, a random ternary copolymerization strategy has become a promising and efficient approach to develop high-performance polymer donors for polymer solar cells (PSCs). Here, in this study, a low-cost electron-withdrawing unit, 2,5-bis(4-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)pyrazine (PZ-T), is incorporated into the polymer backbone of PM6 as the third component, and three D-A 1 -D-A 2 type terpolymers PMZ-10, PMZ-20, and PMZ-30 are synthesized by the random copolymerization strategy, with the PZ-T proportion of 10%, 20%, and 30%, respectively. The terpolymers exhibit downshifted highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels than PM6, which is beneficial for obtaining higher open-circuit voltage (V oc ) of the PSCs with the polymer as a donor. Importantly, the PSCs based on PMZ-10:Y6 demonstrate efficient exciton dissociation, higher and balanced electron/hole mobilities, desirable aggregation, and high power conversion efficiency of 18.23%, which is the highest efficiency among the terpolymer-based PSCs so far. The results indicate that the ternary copolymerization strategy with PZ-T as the second A-unit is an efficient approach to further improve the photovoltaic performance and reduce the synthetic cost of the D-A copolymer donors.

Stable High‐Conductivity Ethylenedioxythiophene Polymers via Borane‐Adduct Doping

Efficient doping of polymer semiconductors is required for high conductivity and efficient thermoelectric performance. Lewis acids, e.g., B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 , have been widely employed as dopants, but the mechanism is not fully understood. 1:1 “Wheland type” or zwitterionic complexes of B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 are created with small conjugated molecules 3,6-bis(5-(7-(5-methylthiophen-2-yl)-2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxin-5-yl)thiophen-2-yl)-2,5-dioctyl-2,5-dihydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione [oligo_DPP(EDOT) 2 ] and 3,6-bis(5''-methyl-[2,2':5',2''-terthiophen]-5-yl)-2,5-dioctyl-2,5-dihydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione [oligo_DPP(Th) 2 ]. Using a wide variety of experimental and computational approaches, the doping ability of these Wheland Complexes with B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 are characterized for five novel diketopyrrolopyrrole-ethylenedioxythiophene (DPP-EDOT)-based conjugated polymers. The electrical properties are a strong function of the specific conjugated molecule constituting the adduct, rather than acidic protons generated via hydrolysis of B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 , serving as the oxidant. It is highly probable that certain repeat units/segments form adduct structures in p -type conjugated polymers which act as intermediates for conjugated polymer doping. Electronic and optical properties are consistent with the increase in hole-donating ability of polymers with their cumulative donor strengths. The doped film of polymer (DPP(EDOT) 2 -(EDOT) 2 ) exhibits exceptionally good thermal and air-storage stability. The highest conductivities, ≈300 and ≈200 S cm -1 , are achieved for DPP(EDOT) 2 -(EDOT) 2 doped with B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 and its Wheland complexes.

Coherent Phonon-Induced Modulation of Charge Transfer in 2D Hybrid Perovskites

Electron–phonon interactions play an essential role in charge transport and transfer processes in semiconductors. For most structures, tailoring electron–phonon interactions for specific functionality remains elusive. Here, it is shown that, in hybrid perovskites, coherent phonon modes can be used to manipulate charge transfer. In the 2D double perovskite, (AE2T) 2 AgBiI 8 (AE2T: 5,5“-diylbis(amino-ethyl)-(2,2”-(2)thiophene)), the valence band maximum derived from the [Ag 0.5 Bi 0.5 I4] 2– framework lies in close proximity to the AE2T-derived HOMO level, thereby forming a type-II heterostructure. During transient absorption spectroscopy, pulsed excitation creates sustained coherent phonon modes, which periodically modulate the associated electronic levels. Thus, the energy offset at the organic–inorganic interface also oscillates periodically, providing a unique opportunity for modulation of interfacial charge transfer. Density-functional theory corroborates the mechanism and identifies specific phonon modes as likely drivers of the coherent charge transfer. These observations are a striking example of how electron–phonon interactions can be used to manipulate fundamentally important charge and energy transfer processes in hybrid perovskites.

Double Doping of Semiconducting Polymers Using Ion-Exchange with a Dianion

The interactions between counterions and electronic carriers in electrically doped semiconducting polymers are important for delocalization of charge carriers, electronic conductivity, and thermal stability. The introduction of a dianions in semiconducting polymers leads to double doping where there is one counterion for two charge carriers. Double doping minimizes structural distortions, but changes the electrostatic interactions between the carriers and counterions. Polymeric ionic liquids (PIL) with croconate dianions are helpful to investigate the role of the counterion in p-type semiconducting polymers. PILs prevent diffusion of the cation into the semiconducting polymers during ion exchange. The redox-active croconate dianions undergo ion exchange with doped semiconducting polymers depending on their ionization energy. Croconate dianions are found to reduce doped films of poly(3-hexyl thiophene), but undergo ion exchange with a polythiophene with tetraethylene glycol side chains, P(g 4 2T-T), that has a lower ionization energy. The croconate dianion maintains crystalline order in P(g 4 2T-T) and leads to a lower activation energy for the electrical conductivity than PF 6 – counterions. The control of the doping level with croconate allows optimization of the thermoelectric performance of the semiconducting polymer. Finally, the thermal stability of the doped films of P(g 4 2T-T) is found to depend strongly on the nature of the counterion.

On the Importance of Chemical Precision in Organic Electronics: Fullerene Intercalation in Perfectly Alternating Conjugated Polymers

Abstract The true structure of alternating conjugated polymers—the state‐of‐the‐art materials for many organic electronics—often deviates from the idealized picture. Homocoupling defects are in fact inherent to the widely used cross‐coupling polymerization methods. Nevertheless, many polymers still perform excellently in the envisaged applications, which raises the question if one should really care about these imperfections. This article looks at the relevance of chemical precision (and lack thereof) in conjugated polymers covering the entire spectrum from the molecular scale, to the micro and mesostructure, up to the device level. The different types of polymerization errors for the alkoxylated variant of the benchmark (semi)crystalline polymer poly[2,5‐bis(3‐tetradecylthiophen‐2‐yl)thieno[3,2‐ b ]thiophene (PBTTT) are identified, visualized, and quantified and a general strategy to avoid homocoupling is introduced. Through a combination of experiments and supported by simulations, it is shown that these coupling defects hinder fullerene intercalation and limit device performance as compared to the homocoupling‐free analog. This clearly demonstrates that structural defects do matter and should be generally avoided, in particular when the geometrical regularity of the polymer is essential. These insights likely go beyond the specific PBTTT derivatives studied here and are of general relevance for the wider organic electronics field.

Solution–Doped Donor–Acceptor Copolymers Based on Diketopyrrolopyrrole and 3, 3'–Bis (2–(2–(2–Methoxyethoxy) Ethoxy) ethoxy)–2, 2'–Bithiophene Exhibiting Outstanding Thermoelectric Power Factors with p –Dopants

The design of polymeric semiconductors exhibiting high electrical conductivity (σ) and thermoelectric power factor (PF) will be vital for flexible large-area electronics. In this work, four polymers based on diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP), 2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxine (EDOT), thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (TT), and 3, 3'-bis (2-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy) ethoxy) ethoxy)-2, 2'-bithiophene (MEET) are investigated as side-chains, with the MEET polymers newly synthesized for this study. These polymers are systematically doped with tetrafluorotetracyanoquinodimethane ( F 4 TCNQ), CF3SO3H, and the synthesized dopant Cp(CN) 3 -(COOMe) 3 , differing in geometry and electron affinity. The DPP-EDOT-based polymer containing MEET as side-chains exhibits the highest conductivity (σ) ≈700 S cm–1 in this series with the acidic dopant (CF 3 SO 3 H). This polymer also shows the lowest oxidation potential by cyclic voltammetry (CV), the strongest intermolecular interactions evidenced by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and has the most oxygen-based functionality for possible hydrogen bonding and ionic screening. Other polymers exhibit high σ ≈300–500 S cm–1 and power factor up to 300 µW m –1 K –2 . The mechanism of conductivity is predominantly electronic, as validated by time-dependent conductance studies and transient thermo voltage monitoring over time, including for those doped with the acid. Furthermore, these materials maintain significant thermal stability and air stability over ≈6 weeks. Density functional theory calculations reveal molecular geometries and inform about frontier energy levels. Raman spectroscopy, in conjunction with scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS) and x-ray diffraction, provides insight into the solid-state microstructure and degree of phase separation of the doped polymer films. Infrared spectroscopy enables this study to further quantify the degree of charge transfer from polymer to dopant.

Design Principles of Diketopyrrolopyrrole‐Thienopyrrolodione Acceptor 1 –Acceptor 2 Copolymers

Abstract The design principles of acceptor 1 –acceptor 2 copolymers featuring alternating diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) and thienopyrrolodione (TPD) moieties are investigated. The investigated series of polymers is obtained by varying the aromatic linker between the two acceptor motifs between thiophene, thiazole, pyridine, and benzene. High electron affinities between 3.96 and 4.42 eV, facilitated by the synergy of the acceptor motifs are determined with optical gaps between 1.37 and 2.02 eV. Grazing incidence wide‐angle X‐ray scattering studies reveal a range of film morphologies after thermal annealing, including face‐on, end‐on and superstructure edge‐on‐like crystallites. Conversely, all materials form thin edge‐on layers on the polymer–air interface, as demonstrated by multi‐elemental near‐edge X‐ray absorption fine‐structure spectroscopy. The benefit of the electron‐deficient linkers thiazole and pyridine is evident: In organic field effect transistors, electron mobilities of up to 4.6 × 10 −2 cm 2 V −1 s −1 are obtained with outstanding on/off current ratios of 5 × 10 5 , facilitated by the absence of detectable hole transport in these materials. Viability for all‐polymer solar cells is assessed in active layer blends with the donor polymer PM6, yielding a maximum average power conversion efficiency of 4.8% and an open circuit voltage above 1 V.

Photoluminescence Probes Ion Insertion into Amorphous and Crystalline Regions of Organic Mixed Conductors

Abstract Organic mixed ionic‐electronic conductors (OMIECs) have emerged as promising materials for a wide range of next‐generation technologies, including bioelectronics and neuromorphic computing. The performance of these materials depends on the transport of ions through the polycrystalline polymer matrix as well as how the distribution of ions and polarons in crystalline and amorphous regions impacts electronic transport. However, it is often challenging to distinguish whether ions enter crystalline or amorphous regions. In this work, steady‐state and time‐resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroelectrochemistry is used to probe initial ion insertion in crystalline and amorphous regions of the OMIEC material poly(3‐[2‐[2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethoxy]ethyl]thiophene ‐2,5‐diyl) (P3MEEET) as a function of applied voltage. It is found that PL spectroelectrochemistry reports on the initial stages of electrochemical doping through the quenching of PL emission. By distinguishing between amorphous and crystalline contributions to the PL spectrum, ion insertion in crystalline and amorphous regions as a function of voltage is tracked. It is found that PL spectroelectrochemistry is much more sensitive to the initial injection of ions than complementary methods, highlighting its potential as a sensitive tool for interrogating ion injection in OMIECs.

High‐Performance Fluorinated Fused‐Ring Electron Acceptor with 3D Stacking and Exciton/Charge Transport

Abstract A new fluorinated electron acceptor (FINIC) based on 6,6,12,12‐tetrakis(3‐fluoro‐4‐hexylphenyl)‐indacenobis(dithieno[3,2‐ b ;2 ′ ,3 ′ ‐ d ]thiophene) as the electron‐donating central core and 5,6‐difluoro‐3‐(1,1‐dicyanomethylene)‐1‐indanone as the electron‐deficient end groups is rationally designed and synthesized. FINIC shows similar absorption profile in dilute solution to the nonfluorinated analogue INIC. However, compared with INIC, FINIC film shows red‐shifted absorption, down‐shifted frontier molecular orbital energy levels, enhanced crystallinity, and more ordered molecular packing. Single‐crystal structure data show that FINIC molecules pack into closer 3D “network” motif through H‐bonding and π–π interaction, while INIC molecules pack into incompact “honeycomb” motif through only π–π stacking. Theoretical calculations reveal that FINIC has stronger electronic coupling and more molecular interactions than INIC. FINIC has higher electron mobilities in both horizontal and vertical directions than INIC. Moreover, FINIC and INIC support efficient 3D exciton transport. PBD‐SF/FINIC blend has a larger driving force for exciton splitting, more efficient charge transfer and photoinduced charge generation. Finally, the organic solar cells based on PBD‐SF/FINIC blend yield power conversion efficiency of 14.0%, far exceeding that of the PBD‐SF/INIC‐based devices (5.1%).

Random Polymerization Strategy Leads to a Family of Donor Polymers Enabling Well‐Controlled Morphology and Multiple Cases of High‐Performance Organic Solar Cells

Abstract Developing high‐performance donor polymers is important for nonfullerene organic solar cells (NF‐OSCs), as state‐of‐the‐art nonfullerene acceptors can only perform well if they are coupled with a matching donor with suitable energy levels. However, there are very limited choices of donor polymers for NF‐OSCs, and the most commonly used ones are polymers named PM6 and PM7, which suffer from several problems. First, the performance of these polymers (particularly PM7) relies on precise control of their molecular weights. Also, their optimal morphology is extremely sensitive to any structural modification. In this work, a family of donor polymers is developed based on a random polymerization strategy. These polymers can achieve well‐controlled morphology and high‐performance with a variety of chemical structures and molecular weights. The polymer donors are D–A1–D–A2‐type random copolymers in which the D and A1 units are monomers originating from PM6 or PM7, while the A2 unit comprises an electron‐deficient core flanked by two thiophene rings with branched alkyl chains. Consequently, multiple cases of highly efficient NF‐OSCs are achieved with efficiencies between 16.0% and 17.1%. As the electron‐deficient cores can be changed to many other structural units, the strategy can easily expand the choices of high‐performance donor polymers for NF‐OSCs.

High‐Efficiency Ion‐Exchange Doping of Conducting Polymers

Abstract Molecular doping—the use of redox‐active small molecules as dopants for organic semiconductors—has seen a surge in research interest driven by emerging applications in sensing, bioelectronics, and thermoelectrics. However, molecular doping carries with it several intrinsic problems stemming directly from the redox‐active character of these materials. A recent breakthrough was a doping technique based on ion‐exchange, which separates the redox and charge compensation steps of the doping process. Here, the equilibrium and kinetics of ion exchange doping in a model system, poly(2,5‐bis(3‐alkylthiophen‐2‐yl)thieno(3,2‐b)thiophene) (PBTTT) doped with FeCl 3 and an ionic liquid, is studied, reaching conductivities in excess of 1000 S cm −1 and ion exchange efficiencies above 99%. Several factors that enable such high performance, including the choice of acetonitrile as the doping solvent, which largely eliminates electrolyte association effects and dramatically increases the doping strength of FeCl 3 , are demonstrated. In this high ion exchange efficiency regime, a simple connection between electrochemical doping and ion exchange is illustrated, and it is shown that the performance and stability of highly doped PBTTT is ultimately limited by intrinsically poor stability at high redox potential.

Stretchable Redox‐Active Semiconducting Polymers for High‐Performance Organic Electrochemical Transistors

Abstract Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) represent an emerging device platform for next‐generation bioelectronics owing to the uniquely high amplification and sensitivity to biological signals. For achieving seamless tissue–electronics interfaces for accurate signal acquisition, skin‐like softness and stretchability are essential requirements, but they have not yet been imparted onto high‐performance OECTs, largely due to the lack of stretchable redox‐active semiconducting polymers. Here, a stretchable semiconductor is reported for OECT devices, namely poly(2‐(3,3′‐bis(2‐(2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethoxy)‐[2,2′‐bithiophen]‐5)yl thiophene) (p(g2T‐T)), which gives exceptional stretchability over 200% strain and 5000 repeated stretching cycles, together with OECT performance on par with the state‐of‐the‐art. Validated by systematic characterizations and comparisons of different polymers, the key design features of this polymer that enable the combination of high stretchability and high OECT performance are a nonlinear backbone architecture, a moderate side‐chain density, and a sufficiently high molecular weight. Using this highly stretchable polymer semiconductor, an intrinsically stretchable OECT is fabricated with high normalized transconductance (≈223 S cm −1 ) and biaxial stretchability up to 100% strain. Furthermore, on‐skin electrocardiogram (ECG) recording is demonstrated, which combines built‐in amplification and unprecedented skin conformability.

18.6% Efficiency All-Polymer Solar Cells Enabled by a Wide Bandgap Polymer Donor Based on Benzo[1,2-d:4,5-d']bisthiazole

The limited selection of wide bandgap polymer donors for all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) is a bottleneck problem restricting their further development and remains poorly studied. In this work, a new wide bandgap polymer, namely PBBTz-Cl, is designed and synthesized by bridging the benzobisthiazole acceptor block and chlorinated benzodithiophene donor block with thiophene units for application as an electron donor in all-PSCs. PBBTz-Cl not only possesses wide bandgap and deep energy levels but also displays strong absorption, high-planar structure, and good crystallinity, making it a promising candidate for application as a polymer donor in organic solar cells. When paired with the narrow bandgap polymer acceptor PY-IT, a fibril-like morphology forms, which facilitates exciton dissociation and charge transport, contributing to a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.15% of the corresponding all-PSCs. Moreover, when introducing another crystalline polymer acceptor BTP-2T2F into the PBBTz-Cl:PY-IT host blend, the absorption ditch in the range of 600–750 nm is filled, and the blend morphology is further optimized with the trap density reducing. As a result, the ternary blend all-PSCs achieve a significantly improved PCE of 18.60%, which is among the highest values for all-PSCs to date.

Enhancing the Conductivity and Thermoelectric Performance of Semicrystalline Conducting Polymers through Controlled Tie Chain Incorporation

Abstract Conjugated polymers are promising materials for thermoelectric applications, however, at present few effective and well‐understood strategies exist to further advance their thermoelectric performance. Here a new model system is reported for a better understanding of the key factors governing their thermoelectric properties: aligned, ribbon‐phase poly[2,5‐bis(3‐dodecylthiophen‐2‐yl)thieno[3,2‐b]thiophene] (PBTTT) doped by ion‐exchange doping. Using a range of microstructural and spectroscopic methods, the effect of controlled incorporation of tie‐chains between the crystalline domains is studied through blending of high and low molecular weight chains. The tie chains provide efficient transport pathways between crystalline domains and lead to significantly enhanced electrical conductivity of 4810 S cm −1 , which is not accompanied by a reduction in Seebeck coefficient or a large increase in thermal conductivity. Respectable power factors of 173 µW m −1 K −2 are demonstrated in this model system. The approach is generally applicable to a wide range of semicrystalline conjugated polymers and could provide an effective pathway for further enhancing their thermoelectric properties and overcome traditional trade‐offs in optimization of thermoelectric performance.

Revealing the Electrophilic‐Attack Doping Mechanism for Efficient and Universal p‐Doping of Organic Semiconductors

Abstract Doping is of great importance to tailor the electrical properties of semiconductors. However, the present doping methodologies for organic semiconductors (OSCs) are either inefficient or can only apply to some OSCs conditionally, seriously limiting their general applications. Herein, a novel p‐doping mechanism is revealed by investigating the interactions between the dopant trityl tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl) borate (TrTPFB) and poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT). It is found that electrophilic attack of the trityl cations on thiophenes results in the formation of tritylated thiophenium ions, which subsequently induce electron transfer from neighboring P3HT chains to realize p‐doping. This unique p‐doping mechanism enables TrTPFB to p‐dope various OSCs including those with high ionization energy (IE ≈ 5.8 eV). Moreover, this doping mechanism endows TrTPFB with strong doping capability, leading to doping efficiency of over 80% in P3HT. The discovery and elucidation of this novel doping mechanism not only points out that strong electrophiles are a class of efficient p‐dopants for OSCs, but also provides new opportunities toward highly efficient doping of various OSCs.
