Three relativistic neutrons in a finite volume

We generalize the relativistic field-theoretic (RFT) three-particle finite-volume formalism to systems of three identical, massive, spin-1/2 fermions, such as three neutrons. This allows, in principle, for the determination of the three-neutron interaction from the finite-volume spectrum of three-neutron states, which can be obtained from lattice QCD calculations.

The three-point energy correlator in the coplanar limit

Energy correlators are a type of observables that measure how energy is distributed across multiple detectors as a function of the angles between pairs of detectors. In this paper, we study the three-point energy correlator (EEEC) at lepton colliders in the three-particle near-to-plane (coplanar) limit. The leading-power contribution in this limit is governed by the three-jet (trijet) configuration. We introduce a new approach by projecting the EEEC onto the volume of the parallelepiped formed by the unit vectors aligned with three detected final-state particles. Analogous to the back-to-back limit of the two-point energy correlator probing the dijet configuration, the small-volume limit of the EEEC probes the trijet configuration. We derive a transverse momentum dependent (TMD) based factorization theorem that captures the soft and collinear logarithms in the coplanar limit, which enables us to achieve the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithm (N 3 LL) resummation. To our knowledge, this is the first N 3 LL result for a trijet event shape. Additionally, we demonstrate that a similar factorization theorem can be applied to the fully differential EEEC in the three-particle coplanar limit, which provides a clean environment for studying different coplanar trijet shapes.

Interactions of two and three mesons including higher partial waves from lattice QCD

We study two- and three-meson systems composed either of pions or kaons at maximal isospin using Monte Carlo simulations of lattice QCD. Utilizing the stochastic LapH method, we are able to determine hundreds of two- and three-particle energy levels, in nine different momentum frames, with high precision. We fit these levels using the relativistic finite-volume formalism based on a generic effective field theory in order to determine the parameters of the two- and three-particle K-matrices. We find that the statistical precision of our spectra is sufficient to probe not only the dominant s-wave interactions, but also those in d waves. In particular, we determine for the first time a term in the three-particle K-matrix that contains two-particle d waves. We use three N f = 2 + 1 CLS ensembles with pion masses of 200, 280, and 340 MeV. This allows us to study the chiral dependence of the scattering observables, and compare to the expectations of chiral perturbation theory.

Evaluation of probability density function descriptions for three-component Rayleigh–Taylor mixing

Results from simulations of a three-component Rayleigh–Taylor (RT) mixing problem are presented. These simulations are conducted in heavy–light–heavy and heavy–intermediate–light configurations, and each of these configurations are further considered in high- and low-Reynolds-number regimes. This results in RT-unstable flow with one or both interfaces initially unstable, permitting the influence of problem configuration on the statistical description of three-component RT-driven mixing to be considered. Mass fraction covariances are observed to undergo a sign change through the mixing layer in all four configurations considered. This appears to be unique to the multi-component case and represents another way in which multi-component RT mixing differs from the two-component case. Qualitative and quantitative comparisons of joint and marginal probability density function (PDF) descriptions of species concentration are made. Three-, five-, and six-parameter model PDFs are compared against simulation data to assess how accurately they describe the mixing, and it is found that three-component mixing requires at least a five-parameter model PDF to accurately describe the mixing. Notably, the marginal distributions of three-component mixing do not appear to conform to a beta distribution, representing a departure from the classical two-component RT case. In conclusion, statistical neutrality also appears to influence the optimal choice of model PDF, which is found to be a function of problem configuration.

Electric-field control of the nucleation and motion of isolated three-fold polar vertices

Recently various topological polar structures have been discovered in oxide thin films. Despite the increasing evidence of their switchability under electrical and/or mechanical fields, the dynamic property of isolated ones, which is usually required for applications such as data storage, is still absent. Here, we show the controlled nucleation and motion of isolated three-fold vertices under an applied electric field. At the PbTiO 3 /SrRuO 3 interface, a two-unit-cell thick SrTiO 3 layer provides electrical boundary conditions for the formation of three-fold vertices. Utilizing the SrTiO 3 layer and in situ electrical testing system, we find that isolated three-fold vertices can move in a controllable and reversible manner with a velocity up to ~629 nm s -1 . Microstructural evolution of the nucleation and propagation of isolated three-fold vertices is further revealed by phase-field simulations. This work demonstrates the ability to electrically manipulate isolated three-fold vertices, shedding light on the dynamic property of isolated topological polar structures.

Shock tube experiments on the three-layer Richtmyer–Meshkov instability

Here, a vertical shock tube is used for experiments on the three-layer Richtmyer–Meshkov instability. Two closely spaced membrane-less interfaces are formed by the flow of two different sects of three gases: one with air above CO 2 above SF 6 and the other with helium above air above SF 6 . The lightest of the three gases enters the shock tube at the top of the driven section and flows downward. Conversely, the heaviest gas enters at the bottom of the shock tube and flows upward while the intermediate density gas enters at the middle through porous plates. All three gases are allowed to escape through holes at the layer location, leaving an approximately 30-mm layer of intermediate-density gas suspended between the lightest gas from above and the heaviest gas from below. A single-mode, two-dimensional initial perturbation is then imposed on the lower interface by oscillating the shock tube in the horizontal direction. The flow is visualized by seeding the intermediate gas with particles and illuminating it with a pulsed laser. Image sequences are then captured using high-speed video cameras. Perturbation amplitude measurements are made from the three-layer system and compared with measurements from 2, two-layer systems. It is observed that the presence of the upper, initially flat interface produces a decrease in growth of instability amplitude in the nonlinear phase over an equivalent single-interface configuration.

Three-body Förster resonance of a new type in Rydberg atoms

The three-body Förster resonances 3 × nP{sub 3/2}(|M|) →nS{sub 1/2} + (n + 1)S{sub 1/2} + nP{sub 3/2}(|M*|), controlled by a constant electric field, were realised earlier by the authors in an ensemble of several cold Rydberg Rb atoms. One of the drawbacks of such resonances for potential application in three-qubit quantum gates is the proximity of the two-body Förster resonance 2 × nP{sub 3/2} → nS{sub 1/2} + (n + 1)S{sub 1/2}, as well as the possibility of their implementation only for states with values of the principal quantum numbers n ⩽38. A three-body resonance of a new type, 3 × nP{sub 3/2} → nS{sub 1/2} + (n + 1)S{sub 1/2} + nP{sub 1/2}, which can be realised for arbitrary n, is proposed and analysed. Its specific feature is also that the third atom transits into a state with a different total angular momentum J = 1/2, which has no Stark structure, so that the two-body resonance is completely absent. Numerical calculations showed that for not too strong interaction, it is possible to observe coherent three-body oscillations of the populations of collective states, which is of interest for developing new schemes of three-qubit quantum gates controlled by an electric field. Little prairie under the panel: testing native pollinator habitat seed mix establishment at three utility-scale solar sites in Minnesota

Abstract As more land is being utilized for large-scale solar energy projects, there are increasing discussions from stakeholders on how to utilize land under solar panels to promote biodiversity. One path is to plant habitat beneficial to pollinators and other insects, but there have been few long-term studies that examine how different vegetation and seed mixes establish underneath solar panels. This study addresses a scientific gap to determine whether native pollinator seed mixes successfully establish over time under solar arrays using a systematic assessment of eight seed mixes planted at three utility-scale solar sites in Minnesota. We assess establishment with a percent native coverage metric, which is an assessment of native species observations compared to total observations during percent cover analyses in our vegetative test plots. The percent native coverage metric allows for a measurement of how the seed mix established and how the seed mix persists over time. The percent native coverage under and in between the solar photovoltaic (PV) arrays rose from 10% after one year of planting to 58% after three years across all sites, while the native coverage of the full sun control area rose from 9.6% to 70% under the same period, showing that native prairie and pollinator plants successfully established under the array, although to a lesser extent than in full sun conditions. Percent native coverage under the PV arrays rose 5- to 8-fold for each of the three sites from over the course of the study, while the coverage of weeds decreased for all three sites over the same period. Percent native coverage varied by seed mix over the project years, but every seed mix experienced a higher percent native coverage year after year under the PV arrays. Our results did not indicate a difference in establishment across placement within the array; the center, west, and east portions of the areas in between panels had similar establishment rates at two out of three sites, indicating that the same seed mix can be applied throughout the array. Out of 101 plant species seeded, we observed the establishment of 68 species in our vegetative test plots, and we detailed the top 20 observed species to inform future seed mix development. Based on these findings, native pollinator vegetation can establish over time at solar arrays, and it can be suitable for creating habitat at utility-scale solar sites.

Nuclear three-body short-range correlations in coordinate space

Here, we study the effects of three-nucleon short-range correlations on nuclear coordinate-space densities. For this purpose, novel three-body densities are calculated for ground-state nuclei using the auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo method. The results are analyzed in terms of the generalized contact formalism, extended to include three-body correlations, revealing the universal behavior of nucleon triplets at short distances. We identify the quantum numbers of such correlated triplets and extract scaling factors of triplet abundances that can be compared to upcoming inclusive electron-scattering data. We also show that the dynamics of these triplets is sensitive to three-body forces, and, therefore, the short-range part of three-body force models could be tested against appropriate exclusive electron-scattering data.

Dark Energy Survey Year 3 results: Measurement of the baryon acoustic oscillations with three-dimensional clustering

The three-dimensional correlation function offers an effective way to summarize the correlation of the large-scale structure even for imaging galaxy surveys. We have applied the projected three-dimensional correlation function, ξ p to measure the baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) scale on the first-three years Dark Energy Survey data. The sample consists of about 7 million galaxies in the redshift range 0.6< z p < 1.1 over a footprint of 4108 deg 2 . Our theory modeling includes the impact of realistic true redshift distributions beyond Gaussian photo-z approximation. ξ p is obtained by projecting the three-dimensional correlation to the transverse direction. To increase the signal-to-noise of the measurements, we have considered a Gaussian stacking window function in place of the commonly used top-hat. ξ p is sensitive to D M (z eff )/r s , the ratio between the comoving angular diameter distance and the sound horizon. Using the full sample, D M (z eff )/r s is constrained to be19.00 ± 0.67 (top-hat) and 19.15 ± 0.58 (Gaussian) at z eff = 0.835. The constraint is weaker than the angular correlation w constraint 18.84 ± 0.50), and we trace this to the fact that the BAO signals are heterogeneous across redshift. While ξ p responds to the heterogeneous signals by enlarging the error bar, w can still give a tight bound on D M s in this case. When a homogeneous BAO-signal subsample in the range 0.7 < z p <1.0 (z eff = 0.845) is considered, ξp yields 19.80 ± 0.67 (top-hat) and 19.84 ± 0.53 (Gaussian). The latter is mildly stronger than the w constraint (19.86 ± 0.55). We find that the ξ p results are more sensitive to photo-z because ξ p keeps the three-dimensional clustering information causing it to be more prone to photo-z noise. The Gaussian window gives more robust results than the top-hat as the former is designed to suppress the low signal modes. ξ p and the angular statistics such as w have their own pros and cons, and they serve an important crosscheck with each other.

Partial-wave projection of the one-particle exchange in three-body scattering amplitudes

As the study of three-hadron physics from lattice QCD matures, it is necessary to develop proper analysis tools in order to reliably study a variety of phenomena, including resonance spectroscopy and nuclear structure. Reconstructing the three-particle scattering amplitude requires solving integral equations, which can be written in terms of data-constrained dynamical functions and physical on shell quantities. The driving term in these equations is the so-called one-particle exchange, which leads to a kinematic divergence for particles on mass shell. A vital component in defining three-particle amplitudes with definite parity and total angular momentum, which are used in spectroscopic studies, is to project the one-particle exchange into definite partial waves. We present a general procedure to construct exact analytic partial-wave projections of the one-particle exchange contribution for any system composed of three spinless hadrons. Our result allows one full control over the analytic structure of the projection, which we explore for some low-lying partial waves with applications to three pions. Exactness of the normal-ordered two-body truncation of three-nucleon forces

Reference-state-based many-body methods start from Hamiltonians that are normal ordered with respect to the reference state. In low-energy nuclear physics applications, normal-ordered Hamiltonians consisting of two- and three-nucleon forces are usually truncated at the two-body rank with residual three-nucleon operators being discarded. Benchmark computations have shown that this truncation is accurate, but we lack an understanding about why it works. Here, we show that the normal-ordered two-body truncation is exact for zero-range three-body forces when nuclei are computed using the coupled cluster with singles and doubles method. As the nuclear three-nucleon force is short ranged and a three-body contact is a leading term in effective field theories of quantum chromodynamics, our result provides an analytical basis for the popular normal-ordered two-body approximation.

Reduced Common-Mode Voltage PWM Scheme for Full-SiC Three-Level Uninterruptible Power Supply With Small DC-Link Capacitors

In this article, a pulsewidth modulation (PWM) scheme for three-level full-SiC uninterruptible power supplies is developed to achieve a high power density. Two key passive components are selected for size reduction of the ac-ac stage: common-mode (CM) EMI filter, and dc-link capacitors. To reduce the CM noise, a new vector combination is proposed based on synchronous switching among three-phases. The proposed combinations align CM voltage (CMV) to be a single pulse per switching period. Owing to the simple shape, CMV cancellation between a three-level rectifier and inverter can be maximally utilized. A transition between the three combinations can control the drift of neutral point voltage. An equivalent carrier-based implementation is developed. Second, a simple algorithm to compensate neutral point voltage fluctuation is proposed both for differential mode (DM) and CM output voltage. Low-order harmonics on three-phase currents and an additional high-frequency CM noise by misaligned switching instant can be eliminated. The proposed compensation can be implemented by a simple correction on carrier slopes and injected zero-sequence voltage. The proposed PWM scheme is verified with 20-kW full-SiC UPS switching at 60 kHz with 140 μF dc-link capacitors.

Guaranteed Phase & Topology Identification in Three Phase Distribution Grids

We present a method for joint phase identification and topology recovery in unbalanced three phase radial networks using only voltage measurements. By recovering phases and topology jointly, we utilize all three phase voltage measurements and can handle networks where some buses have a subset of three phases. Our method is theoretically justified by a novel linearized formulation of unbalanced three phase power flow and makes precisely defined and reasonable assumptions on line impedances and load statistics. We validate our method on three IEEE test networks simulated under realistic conditions in OpenDSS, comparing our performance to the state of the art. In addition to providing a new method for phase and topology recovery, our intuitively structured linearized model will provide a foundation for future work in this and other applications.

The roles of three-nucleon force and continuum coupling in mirror symmetry breaking of oxygen mass region

With both three-nucleon force and continuum coupling included, we have developed a self-consistent ab initio Gamow shell model within the Gamow Hartree-Fock (GHF) basis obtained by the realistic interaction itself. With the chiral two-nucleon N 3 LO and three-nucleon N 2 LO interactions, the Gamow shell model has been applied to the mirror systems of Z = 8 neutron-rich isotopes and N = 8 proton-rich isotones, giving good agreements with data in binding energies, dripline positions and excitation spectra. The GHF calculated that the 0 ds/2 , 1 S1/2 and 1 p3/2 orbitals are resonances. The resonance states and their interplay with nonresonant continua play a crucial role in the descriptions of nuclei around driplines. Excitation spectra and Thomas-Ehrman shifts observed can be better described when both three-nucleon force and continuum coupling are considered in calculations. The three-nucleon force and continuum coupling produce a combined effect on the Thomas-Ehrman shift, e.g., for the 1/2 + resonance level of 19Na. The calculations help the understandings of related nuclear astrophysical processes.

Morphology Control of Self-Assembled Three-Phase Au-BaTiO 3 –ZnO Hybrid Metamaterial for Tunable Optical Properties

Microstructural control in metal-dielectric hybrid metamaterials presents enormous opportunities in tailoring the physical properties including the magnetic and optical properties. In this paper, we demonstrate a strong tunability achieved in the microstructure of self-assembled ordered three-phase Au-BaTiO 3 –ZnO hybrid metamaterial along with its optical properties, grown by a pulsed laser deposition method. Varying the growth temperature, deposition frequency, and template thickness evolves the microstructure by tuning the Au and ZnO pillar geometry as well as the shape and size of the Au nanoparticles capping the ZnO nanowires. The three-phase hybrid metamaterials exhibit unique optical properties, including enhanced nonlinear optical properties, hyperbolic dispersion in the visible and near-infrared wavelength region, and tuned epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) wavelength upon varying the deposition parameters. This study suggests that the three-phase hybrid metamaterials present great potential in the microstructure and optical property tuning that can also be applied to other two-phase and three-phase nanocomposite systems.

Designing a Nanoscale Three-phase Electrochemical Pathway to Promote Pt-catalyzed Formaldehyde Oxidation

Gas-phase heterogeneous catalysis is a process spatially constrained on the two-dimensional surface of a solid catalyst. Here, we introduce a new toolkit to open up the third dimension. We discovered that the activity of a solid catalyst can be dramatically promoted by covering its surface with a nanoscale-thin layer of liquid electrolyte while maintaining efficient delivery of gas reactants, a strategy we call three-phase catalysis. Introducing the liquid electrolyte converts the original surface catalytic reaction into an electrochemical pathway with mass transfer facilitated by free ions in a three-dimensional space. Furthermore, we chose the oxidation of formaldehyde as a model reaction and observed a 25000-times enhancement in the turnover frequency of Pt in three-phase catalysis as compared to conventional heterogeneous catalysis. We envision three-phase catalysis as a new dimension for catalyst design and anticipate its applications in more chemical reactions from pollution control to the petrochemical industry.
