The Lithuania 100% Renewable Energy Study - Interim Results: Electricity System Scenarios for 2030 [Slides]

Lithuania's Energy Vision aims to achieve self-sufficiency in electricity generation by 2035 and transition to 100% renewable energy as soon as possible while maintaining affordability, reliability, and energy security. The Lithuania Energy Agency (LEA) is partnering with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to conduct the Lithuania 100% Renewable Energy Study (Lithuania 100) to provide evidence-based analysis for development of Lithuania's National Energy Independence Strategy. The Lithuania 100 Study leverages unique tools and capabilities of NREL to provide rigorous technical analysis of clean energy policies to achieve 100% renewable energy, and assess impacts on electricity grid operations, hydrogen system development, electricity distribution networks, air quality, and human health outcomes. The study is supported by a stakeholder committee chaired by the Ministry of Energy of Lithuania and implemented by four technical working groups. This report provides highlights of key interim results from modeling of Lithuania's near-term electricity grid through the year 2030. Results show that Lithuania has sufficient renewable energy potential, flexible generation capacity, and interconnection with neighboring European Union countries to reliably meet projected 2030 electricity demand with 100% renewable energy. A range of scenarios were modeled, each of which achieves at least 100% renewable energy in electricity, on average over the year, by 2030. Potential demands for hydrogen across industrial and transportation sectors were also evaluated, as well as the cost of hydrogen produced in Lithuania by 2030.

Verification and Validation of Model-Scale Turbine Performance and Control Strategies for the IEA Wind 15 MW Reference Wind Turbine

To enable the fast growth of the floating offshore wind industry, simulation models must be validated with experimental data. Floating wind model-scale experiments in wind–wave facilities have been performed over the last two decades with varying levels of fidelity and limitations. However, the turbine controls in these experiments have considered only limited control strategies and implementations. To allow for control co-design, this research focuses on implementing and experimentally validating more advanced turbine control actions and strategies in a wind–wave basin for a 1:70-scale model of the International Energy Agency’s wind 15 MW reference wind turbine. The control strategies analyzed include torque control, collective pitch control, and transition region control (setpoint smoothing). Our experimental and numerical results include the effects of varying rotor speeds, blade pitches, and wind environments on the turbine thrust and torque. Numerical models from three different software tools are presented and compared to the experimental results. Their ability to effectively represent the aero-dynamic response of the wind turbine to the control actions is successfully validated. Finally, turbine controller tuning parameters based on the derivatives of thrust and torque are derived to allow for improved offshore wind turbine dynamics and to validate the ability of modeling tools to model the dynamics of floating offshore wind turbines with control co-design.

Quantifying and Understanding the Access Time to Dockless Micromobility: A Case Study in Washington, D.C.

Micromobility has been widely deployed in many cities. Similar as how access time/distance affects the travel demand to use public transit and informs transit system design, access time/distance to micromobility service measures its service efficiency and also serves as an equity indicator to inform city agencies from a regulation perspective. Though there is an increasing need to understand it, access to micromobility has not been sufficiently studied. This paper developed a framework to quantity the access time to dockless micromobility service (i.e., the minimum time needed to walk to reach the closest dockless micromobility vehicles). Based on the real-time vehicle location data collected from Washington, DC, this research quantified the access time to dockless micromobility, analyzed its spatial and temporal variation patterns and investigated its relationship with socio-demographic variables (i.e., population density, employment density and low-income population). The results revealed that the access time to dockless micromobility ranges between 0 to 4 minutes with the most frequently observed range of 0.5 to 1 minutes, and the city center area tends to have shorter access time than the outskirts areas. Results also indicate a quite stable access time level in DC with access time standard deviation of 0.2 to 0.5 minutes. After correlating the access time at census-block-group level with socio-demographic data, it was discovered that shorter access time usually aligns with larger population and employment density, and the proportion of low-income population was found not helpful with explaining the access time variation, which indicating a relatively equitable micromobility program.

Supporting Bioproducts Industry Growth with a System Dynamics Decision-Support Tool

A bio-based economy requires chemical products as well as fuels to be produced from biomass. Although a variety of universities, government agencies, start-ups and established firms have engaged in bioproduct development, many projects have failed to reach the point of commercialization and commercialized bioproducts struggle to capture and maintain market share. To date, there has been no general research into the factors that contribute to bioproduct failure or success. This work presents the Bioproduct Transition Dynamics (BTD) system dynamics model, a decision-support tool that simulates the bioproduct development process from pre-piloting research through construction of the first commercial-scale plant, as well as the processes of obtaining funding from investors and government agencies. The core of the BTD is a feedback loop between bioproduct developers and funders, which relates development progress measured with indicators such as net present value to funders’ decisions to continue investing. External factors such as feedstock prices, market size and growth, and the existence of bioproduct consumers also influence a development project’s chances of receiving follow-on funding. Virtually any bioproduct can be represented with the BTD: direct replacements, performance-advantaged products, niche and commodity markets can all be modeled. The goal of the BTD project is to inform decisions made by developers in both established firms and start-ups, investors, government agencies, and other stakeholders interested in growing the nascent U.S. bioproducts industry. This talk will cover the general structure and functionality of the BTD, and present results from an analysis performed with the BTD to demonstrate its use as a decision-support tool and the insights it can provide. The goal of the analysis is to identify the most critical factors that lead to direct replacement and performance-advantaged bioproduct projects emerging successfully from the “Valley of Death”, and to determine if these factors differ between the two bioproduct types.

Critical Role of Water for Energy Transitions Technologies: A Literature Review

This report summarizes the water inputs associated with four technologies playing diverse roles in energy transitions: hydrogen, solar photovoltaics (PV), wind, and batteries. Information in this report is drawn from multiple sources, including peer-reviewed literature, industry and international agency reports, EcoInvent life cycle inventory database, and subject matter expert (SME) consultations. Where possible, insights that characterized water requirements for specific stages of the technology development (e.g., operations, manufacturing, and mining) were prioritized over broader cradle-to-gate assessment values. Furthermore, both direct and indirect water requirements (i.e., associated with associated energy inputs) were considered in this literature review.
