Several processes studied by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider produce low-momentum b-flavored hadrons in the final state. This paper describes the calibration of a dedicated tagging algorithm that identifies b-flavored hadrons outside of hadronic jets by reconstructing the soft secondary vertices originating from their decays. The calibration is based on a proton-proton collision dataset at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb -1 . Scale factors used to correct the algorithm’s performance in simulated events are extracted for the b-tagging efficiency and the mistag rate of the algorithm using a data sample enriched in $t\overline{t}$ events. Several orthogonal measurement regions are defined, binned as a function of the multiplicities of soft secondary vertices and jets containing a b-flavored hadron in the event. The mistag rate scale factors are estimated separately for events with low and high average numbers of interactions per bunch crossing. The results, which are derived from events with low missing transverse momentum, are successfully validated in a phase space characterized by high missing transverse momentum and therefore are applicable to new physics searches carried out in either phase space regime.
While the breakdown of the perturbation expansion for the many-electron problem has several formal consequences, here we unveil its physical effect: flipping the sign of the effective electronic interaction in specific scattering channels. By decomposing local and uniform susceptibilities of the Hubbard model via their spectral representations, we prove how entering the nonperturbative regime causes an enhancement of the charge response, ultimately responsible for the phase-separation instabilities close to the Mott metal-insulator transition. Furthermore, our analysis opens a new route for understanding phase transitions in the nonperturbative regime and clarifies why attractive effects emerging from a strong repulsion can induce phase separations but not s-wave pairing or charge-density wave instabilities.
Electronic structure of the layered van der Waals ferromagnet CrI 3 is studied with self consistent diagrammatic approaches beyond the GW approximation. Considerable improvement in the calculated band gap as compared to the non-self-consistent G0W0 results has been found. Certain spectral features in the valence bands discovered recently by the angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, are reproduced better when we use full frequency dependent self energy. Density functional theory and the quasiparticle self-consistent GW method which are based on the frequency-independent self energy are unable to resolve these features. The non-locality effects in the diagrams beyond the GW approximation are large for both polarizability and self energy. This finding can potentially have an impact on the development of methods like the GW+DMFT (dynamical mean field theory).

The High-Luminosity LHC will continue exploring physics beyond the standard model with proton-proton collisions at ten times the luminosity of previous LHC runs. The physics program depends on precise measurements of charged particles near the beams. The CMS experiment will use layers of high-granularity hybrid silicon pixel detectors. Pixelation is achieved by bonding silicon to tiny electrodes, which are directly connected to the specially designed integrated circuit, CROCv2. Pixel detector components are in the pre-production phase, and evaluating prototypes of sensor-chip assemblies from different vendors provides quick feedback and improves reliability during production. This article presents the efforts to test the viability of bare detector assemblies using a manual probe station and electronic charge-injection methods.
The effects of varying the rate of delivery of dichotic tone pip stimuli on selective attention measured by evoked-potential amplitudes and signal detectability scores were studied. The subjects attended to one channel (ear) of tones, ignored the other, and pressed a button whenever occasional targets - tones of a slightly higher pitch were detected in the attended ear. Under separate conditions, randomized interstimulus intervals were short, medium, and long. Another study compared the effects of attention on the N1 component of the auditory evoked potential for tone pips presented alone and when white noise was added to make the tones barely above detectability threshold in a three-channel listening task. Major conclusions are that (1) N1 is enlarged to stimuli in an attended channel only in the short interstimulus interval condition (averaging 350 msec), (2) N1 and P3 are related to different modes of selective attention, and (3) attention selectivity in multichannel listening task is greater when tones are faint and/or difficult to detect.

New design for chopped-infrared astronomical telescope reduces coma to increase image quality. Coma introduced by tilting cancelled by shaping of secondary mirror to introduce equal but opposite amount of coma independent of tilt angle. Because of this measure, telescope performance on axis remains limited mainly by diffraction.
