Instruction manual, optical effects module electronic controller and processor, model OEMCP

The OEM-1 electronic module is discussed; it is comprised of four subsystems: the signal processing and display; the stepper motor controls; the chopper controls; and the dc-dc invertor. The OEM-1 module controls the sample wheel so that the relative transmittance of the samples can be compared to the clear aperture position. The 3-1/2 digit digital voltmeter displays the clear aperture signal level as well as the ratio of the remaining sample positions relative to the clear aperture position. The sample wheel position is decoded so that the signals and ratios can be correlated to the data. The OEM is automatically reset to the I sub o on initial turn-on and can be reset to the '0' position by actuating a front panel switch. The sample wheel can be interrupted to change samples or induce a longer integration time if desired by a front panel command. Integration times from 1 - 50 seconds are provided at the front panel, and BCD data for external interfacing is provided.

Development and evaluation of a Hadamard transform imaging spectrometer and a Hadamard transform thermal imager

A spectrometric imager and a thermal imager, which achieve multiplexing by the use of binary optical encoding masks, were developed. The masks are based on orthogonal, pseudorandom digital codes derived from Hadamard matrices. Spatial and/or spectral data is obtained in the form of a Hadamard transform of the spatial and/or spectral scene; computer algorithms are then used to decode the data and reconstruct images of the original scene. The hardware, algorithms and processing/display facility are described. A number of spatial and spatial/spectral images are presented. The achievement of a signal-to-noise improvement due to the signal multiplexing was also demonstrated. An analysis of the results indicates both the situations for which the multiplex advantage may be gained, and the limitations of the technique. A number of potential applications of the spectrometric imager are discussed.

Digital time slot display for Omega receiver

Methods of decoding a digital word to display alpha-numeric characters for driving a standard seven-segment LED display have been devised for Omega station identification. The circuit could replace the system now being used in Ohio University's Omega receivers, which lights one of eight LED's to signify the Omega time slot being received. The letters A through H, representing the Omega stations, can be read directly from the seven-segment display.

Coding for a multiple-access channel

In a simple multiple-access communication system, two geographically separated users attempt to communicate binary data to two data sinks over a common channel called a multiple access channel. User one sends codewords from a block code C sub one, while user two sends codewords from a block code C sub two. The two users occupy the same frequency slot, transmit at the same time, and use the same type of modulation. Block codes which are uniquely decodable and capable of correcting errors are constructed for two multiple-access channel models. The first model is referred to as a noiseless multiple-access binary erasure channel. If the two transmitted bits from the two users are zeros, a zero is transmitted over the channel to the receiver; if the two transmitted bits are ones, a one is transmitted to the receiver; if the two bits are different, an erasure symbol is transmitted to the receiver. The second model is also a multiple-access binary erasure channel but with noise introduced.

Hadamard transform imager and imaging spectrometer

An imager and a spectrometric imager, which achieve multiplexing by the use of binary optical encoding masks, have been built and tested. The masks are based on orthogonal, pseudorandom digital codes derived from Hadamard matrices. The spatial (and/or spectral) data are therefore obtained in the form of a Hadamard transform of the spatial (and/or spectral) scene. Computer algorithms are used to decode the data and reconstruct images of the original scene. The hardware, algorithms processing and display facility are described. A number of spatial and spatial/spectral images, obtained in the laboratory, are presented.

Convolutional code performance in the Rician fading channel

The performance of short constraint length convolutional codes in conjunction with binary phase-shift keyed (BPSK) modulation and Viterbi maximum likelihood decoding on the classical Rician fading channel is examined in detail. Primary interest is in the bit error probability performance as a function of E sub b/N sub 0 parameterized by the fading channel parameters. Fairly general upper bounds on bit error probability performance in the presence of fading are obtained and compared with simulation results in the two extremes of zero channel memory and infinite channel memory. The efficacy of simple block interleaving in combating the memory of the channel is thoroughly explored. Results include the effects of fading on tracking loop performance and the subsequent impact on overall coded system performance. The approach is analytical where possible; otherwise resort is made to digital computer simulation.

Performance of coded MFSK in a Rician fading channel

The performance of convolutional codes in conjunction with noncoherent multiple frequency shift-keyed (MFSK) modulation and Viterbi maximum likelihood decoding on a Rician fading channel is examined in detail. While the primary motivation underlying this work has been concerned with system performance on the planetary entry channel, it is expected that the results are of considerably wider interest. Particular attention is given to modeling the channel in terms of a few meaningful parameters which can be correlated closely with the results of theoretical propagation studies. Fairly general upper bounds on bit error probability performance in the presence of fading are derived and compared with simulation results using both unquantized and quantized receiver outputs. The effects of receiver quantization and channel memory are investigated and it is concluded that the coded noncoherent MFSK system offers an attractive alternative to coherent BPSK in providing reliable low data rate communications in fading channels typical of planetary entry missions.

An operational video data compression system for ATS and ITOS

An operational data compression system has been developed and implemented for transmission of digitized ATS and ITOS-VHRR satellite video data over the wideband communication link between the Wallops Island, Va. Command and Data Acquisition Station and the National Environmental Satellite Service at Suitland, Md. This system uses minicomputers for the coding and decoding of the data to achieve maximum flexibility together with specially designed interface equipment for greater efficiency. No loss in data quality occurs due to the compression, and, in certain cases, data is transmitted which would be otherwise unavailable due to the limited channel capacity. This paper describes the method of compression, the equipment used, and the compression results attained.

Applications of satellite technology for regional organizations (Project ASTRO)

The direct arithmetic processing of adaptive delta modulation (ADM) encoded signals, conversion from ADM encoded signals to pulse code modulation (PCM) encoded signals, and conversion from PCM to ADM encoded signals are discussed. It is shown that signals which are ADM encoded can be arithmetically processed directly, without first decoding. Operating on the DM bit stream, and employing only standard digital hardware, the sum, difference and product can be obtained in PCM and ADM format.

Design of a digital compression technique for shuttle television

The determination of the performance and hardware complexity of data compression algorithms applicable to color television signals, were studied to assess the feasibility of digital compression techniques for shuttle communications applications. For return link communications, it is shown that a nonadaptive two dimensional DPCM technique compresses the bandwidth of field-sequential color TV to about 13 MBPS and requires less than 60 watts of secondary power. For forward link communications, a facsimile coding technique is recommended which provides high resolution slow scan television on a 144 KBPS channel. The onboard decoder requires about 19 watts of secondary power.

System for producing chroma signals

A method for obtaining electronic chroma signals with a single scanning-type image device is described. A color multiplexed light signal is produced using an arrangement of dichroic filter stripes. In the particular system described, a two layer filter is used to color modulate external light which is then detected by an image pickup tube. The resulting time division multiplexed electronic signal from the pickup tube is converted by a decoder into a green color signal, and a single red-blue multiplexed signal, which is demultiplexed to produce red and blue color signals. The three primary color signals can be encoded as standard NTSC color signals.
