Formation Pathway of Wurtzite-like Cu 2 ZnSnSe 4 Nanocrystals

Cu 2 ZnSnSe 4 is a direct band gap semiconductor composed of Earth-abundant elements, making it an attractive material for thin film photovoltaic technologies. Cu 2 ZnSnSe 4 crystallizes in the kesterite structure type as a bulk material, but it can also crystallize in a metastable wurtzite-like crystal structure when synthesized on the nanoscale. The wurtzite-like polymorph introduces unique and useful properties to Cu 2 ZnSnSe 4 materials, including widely tunable band gaps and superior composi-tional flexibility as compared to kesterite Cu 2 ZnSnSe 4 . Here, we investigate the formation pathway of colloidally prepared wurtzite-like Cu 2 ZnSnSe 4 nanocrystals. We show that this quaternary material forms through a chain of reactions, starting with binary Cu 3 Se 2 nanocrystals that, due to both kinetic and thermodynamic reasons, preferentially react with tin to yield hexagonal copper tin selenide intermediates. Furthermore, these ternary intermediates then react with zinc to form the resulting wurtzite-like Cu 2 ZnSnSe 4 nanocrystals. Based on this formation pathway, we suggest synthetic methods that may prevent the for-mation of unwanted impurity phases that are known to hamper the efficiency of Cu 2 ZnSnSe 4 -based optoelectronic devices.

Structure of Layers Formed by [2-(3,6-Disubstituted-9 H -carbazol-9-yl)ethyl]phosphonic Acids on Metal Oxides

[2-(9 H -Carbazol-9-yl)ethyl]phosphonic acid (2PACz) and its derivatives are being used extensively as hole-transport layers in organic and perovskite solar cells due to their ability to modify electrode work function, surface wettability, and in some cases, to improve active-layer adhesion, while minimizing interfacial energy losses. The orientation and coverage of surface modifiers significantly impact these functional properties; however, the detailed structure and packing in these overlayers are challenging to investigate, leading to a lack of understanding of how this structure and packing influence performance and limiting the ability to rationally design molecular modifiers. Here, we investigate monolayers of 2-(9 H -carbazol-9-yl)ethyl phosphonic acid derivatives (from here on referred to as X-2PACz) on indium tin oxide (ITO) and alpha phase aluminum oxide (α-Al 2 O 3 ) using a combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy, and X-ray reflectivity (XRR). By correlating elemental ratios, molecular orientation, and electron density profiles, we directly quantify surface coverage, layer thickness, and molecular tilt across a series of chemically related monolayers. We find that 2PACz and the X-2PACz derivatives form dense monolayers on α-Al 2 O 3 and ITO, with similar surface coverages on either substrate that are inversely proportional to molecular steric bulk. These surface coverage results indicate that X-2PACz is sterically limited in its monolayer surface packing density, as opposed to site limited. Despite surface packing density differences between molecules, the NEXAFS data show a constant average molecular orientation of 61° to 65° between the plane of the carbazole and the substrate for all the molecules on both substrates. These results increase our general understanding of 2PACz derivatives as they become increasingly useful in high performance solar cells.

Structural transformation of metal oxo species within UiO-66 type metal–organic frameworks

Studying the coordination of actinide-based metal oxo clusters can provide valuable insights for nuclear energy technologies and radioactive waste containment. Metal–organic frameworks serve as a platform to directly interrogate the structure and properties of understudied actinide elements, including thorium. Examples of structural evolutions within Th oxo species within MOFs are rare yet relevant for nuclear waste speciation in solution. Herein, we report the serendipitous discovery of the structural evolution of Th-UiO-66 containing a hexanuclear Th node to a mononuclear Th(bdc) 2 (dmf) 2 upon the evaporation of solvent from the reaction. We observe a partial reversal of Th(bdc) 2 (dmf) 2 back to Th-UiO-66 upon hydrothermal treatment, indicating the complex dynamics of Th oxo species in solution. As a result, we report that isolated Ce-UiO-66 similarly transforms to a newly isolated 1D Ce III carboxylate chain MOF named NU-351 under the same conditions as Th-UiO-66, while Zr-UiO-66 and Hf-UiO-66 retain their structures.

Compositional and structural control in LLZO solid electrolytes

Garnet-based solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) represent a promising class of materials for next-generation batteries with improved safety and performance. However, lack of control over the composition and crystal structure of the well-known Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) garnet material has led to poor reproducibility with a wide range of ionic conductivities reported in the literature. In this study, the role of precursor homogeneity in controlling the compositional and structural evolution of Al-doped LLZO is explored. A novel solution-based synthesis approach is employed to demonstrate enhanced atomic-scale mixing of the starting materials in comparison to conventional solid-state preparation methods. Through this technique, it is shown that the stability and formation temperature of the highly conductive cubic phase is directly impacted by the spatial distribution of the doping element and reactant species in the precursor mixture. Precursor homogeneity was also an important factor in mitigating the formation of unwanted secondary impurities. These findings can be used to guide the synthesis of SSEs with reproducible material characteristics and enhanced electrolytic performance.

Rice NIN-LIKE PROTEIN 4 plays a pivotal role in nitrogen use efficiency

Nitrogen (N) is one of the key essential macronutrients that affects rice growth and yield. Inorganic N fertilizers are excessively used to boost yield and generate serious collateral environmental pollution. Therefore, improving crop N use efficiency (NUE) is highly desirable and has been a major endeavour in crop improvement. However, only a few regulators have been identified that can be used to improve NUE in rice to date. Here we show that the rice NIN-like protein 4 (OsNLP4) significantly improves the rice NUE and yield. Field trials consistently showed that loss-of-OsNLP4 dramatically reduced yield and NUE compared with wild type under different N regimes. In contrast, the OsNLP4 overexpression lines remarkably increased yield by 30% and NUE by 47% under moderate N level compared with wild type. Transcriptomic analyses revealed that OsNLP4 orchestrates the expression of a majority of known N uptake, assimilation and signalling genes by directly binding to the nitrate-responsive cis-element in their promoters to regulate their expression. Moreover, overexpression of OsNLP4 can recover the phenotype of Arabidopsis nlp7 mutant and enhance its biomass. Our results demonstrate that OsNLP4 plays a pivotal role in rice NUE and sheds light on crop NUE improvement.

MetaboDirect: an analytical pipeline for the processing of FT-ICR MS-based metabolomic data

Background: Microbiomes are now recognized as the main drivers of ecosystem function ranging from the oceans and soils to humans and bioreactors. However, a grand challenge in microbiome science is to characterize and quantify the chemical currencies of organic matter (i.e., metabolites) that microbes respond to and alter. Critical to this has been the development of Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS), which has drastically increased molecular characterization of complex organic matter samples, but challenges users with hundreds of millions of data points where readily available, user-friendly, and customizable software tools are lacking. Results: Here, we build on years of analytical experience with diverse sample types to develop MetaboDirect, an open-source, command-line-based pipeline for the analysis (e.g., chemodiversity analysis, multivariate statistics), visualization (e.g., Van Krevelen diagrams, elemental and molecular class composition plots), and presentation of direct injection high-resolution FT-ICR MS data sets after molecular formula assignment has been performed. When compared to other available FT-ICR MS software, MetaboDirect is superior in that it requires a single line of code to launch a fully automated framework for the generation and visualization of a wide range of plots, with minimal coding experience required. Among the tools evaluated, MetaboDirect is also uniquely able to automatically generate biochemical transformation networks (ab initio) based on mass differences (mass difference network-based approach) that provide an experimental assessment of metabolite connections within a given sample or a complex metabolic system, thereby providing important information about the nature of the samples and the set of microbial reactions or pathways that gave rise to them. Finally, for more experienced users, MetaboDirect allows users to customize plots, outputs, and analyses. Conclusion: Application of MetaboDirect to FT-ICR MS-based metabolomic data sets from a marine phage-bacterial infection experiment and a Sphagnum leachate microbiome incubation experiment showcase the exploration capabilities of the pipeline that will enable the research community to evaluate and interpret their data in greater depth and in less time. It will further advance our knowledge of how microbial communities influence and are influenced by the chemical makeup of the surrounding system. Near-field imaging and spectroscopy of terahertz resonators and metasurfaces [Invited]

Terahertz (THz) metasurfaces have become a key platform for engineering light-matter interaction at THz frequencies. They have evolved from simple metallic resonator arrays into tunable and programmable devices, displaying ultrafast modulation rates and incorporating emerging quantum materials. The electrodynamics which govern metasurface operation can only be directly revealed at the scale of subwavelength individual metasurface elements, through sampling their evanescent fields. It requires near-field spectroscopy and imaging techniques to overcome the diffraction limit and provide spatial resolution down to the nanoscale. Through a series of case studies, this review provides an in-depth overview of recently developed THz near-field microscopy capabilities for research on metamaterials.

Results of the Micromorphic Upscaling Workflow for the PSAAP III Year 3 Report

Predicting the mechanical response and failure of heterogeneous materials has proven difficult. Multiscale numerical methods based in higher order continuum theories attempt to bridge the gap between microscale and macroscale structural behavior. Micromorphic continuum theories have shown promise. The Tardigrade software package is an implementation of Eringen’s micromorphic continuum theory with capabilities to support multiscale material modeling workflows. These include homogenization through the Micromorphic Filter, calibration of micromorphic material models, and macroscale simulation in Tardigrade-MOOSE. This work discusses micromorphic upscaling efforts of the University of Colorado Boulder PSAAP III multidisciplinary simulation center (MSC). Verification studies are presented that compare the accuracy of the upscaling workflow with analytical solutions for a trivial stress state and homogeneous material using direct numerical simulations (DNS) conducted in the Ratel finite element method (FEM) and GEOS material point method (MPM) codes. These verification studies consider upscaling using the Micromorphic Filter for a “single filter domain”. Finally, DNS of a heterogeneous composite material is upscaled using a “multiple filter domain” method.

Deep Learning Predicts Stress–Strain Relations of Granular Materials Based on Triaxial Testing Data

This study presents an AI-based constitutive modelling framework wherein the prediction model directly learns from triaxial testing data by combining discrete element modelling (DEM) and deep learning. A constitutive learning strategy is proposed based on the generally accepted frame-indifference assumption in constructing material constitutive models. The low-dimensional principal stress-strain sequence pairs, measured from discrete element modelling of triaxial testing, are used to train recurrent neural networks, and then the predicted principal stress sequence is augmented to other high-dimensional or general stress tensor via coordinate transformation. Through detailed hyperparameter investigations, it is found that long short-term memory (LSTM) and gated recurrent unit (GRU) networks have similar prediction performance in constitutive modelling problems, and both satisfactorily predict the stress responses of granular materials subjected to a given unseen strain path. Furthermore, the unique merits and ongoing challenges of data-driven constitutive models for granular materials are discussed.

Non-Semisimple TQFT's and BPS q -Series

We propose and in some cases prove a precise relation between 3-manifold invariants associated with quantum groups at roots of unity and at generic q. Both types of invariants are labeled by extra data which plays an important role in the proposed relation. Bridging the two sides - which until recently were developed independently, using very different methods - opens many new avenues. In one direction, it allows to study (and perhaps even to formulate) q-series invariants labeled by spin c structures in terms of non-semisimple invariants. In the opposite direction, it offers new insights and perspectives on various elements of non-semisimple TQFT's, bringing the latter into one unifying framework with other invariants of knots and 3-manifolds that recently found realization in quantum field theory and in string theory.

Solar bright points in 3840 A and H-alpha.

Analysis of bright features in 3840 A and H-alpha shows that for every Ellerman bomb there is a cospatial brightening in the 3840 A network. We give properties of these bright points in both wavelengths as well as describe: (1) the appearance, and subsequent separation, of new elements in the 3840 A network and (2) the direct transition from a 3840 A bright point to a new sunspot.

A directional microphone array for acoustic studies of wind tunnel models

An end-fire microphone array that utilizes a digital time delay system has been designed and evaluated for measuring noise in wind tunnels. The directional response of both a four- and eight-element linear array of microphones has enabled substantial rejection of background noise and reverberations in the NASA Ames 40- by 80-foot wind tunnel. In addition, it is estimated that four- and eight-element arrays reject 6 and 9 dB, respectively, of microphone wind noise, as compared with a conventional omnidirectional microphone with nose cone. Array response to two types of jet engine models in the wind tunnel is presented. Comparisons of array response to loudspeakers in the wind tunnel and in free field are made.

Conservation: Toward firmer ground

The following aspects of energy conservation were discussed: conservation history and goals, conservation modes, conservation accounting-criteria, and a method to overcome obstacles. The conservation modes tested fall into one of the following categories: reduced energy consumption, increased efficiency of energy utilization, or substitution of one or more forms of energy for another which is in shorter supply or in some sense thought to be of more value. The conservation accounting criteria include net energy reduction, economic, and technical criteria. A method to overcome obstacles includes (approaches such as: direct personal impact (life style, income, security, aspiration), an element of crisis, large scale involvement of environmental, safety, and health issues, connections to big government, big business, big politics, involvement of known and speculative science and technology, appeal to moral and ethical standards, the transient nature of opportunities to correct the system.

Two-electron bond-orbital model, 2

The two-electron bond-orbital model of tetrahedrally-coordinated solids is generalized and its application extended. All intrabond matrix elements entering the formalism are explicitly retained, including the direct overlap S between the anion and cation sp3 hybrid wavefunctions. Complete analytic results are obtained for the six two-electron eigenvalues and eigenstates of the anion-cation bond in terms of S, one-electron parameters V2 and V3, and two-electron correlation parameters V4, V5 and V6. Refined formulas for the dielectric constant and the nuclear exchange and pseudodipolar coefficients, as well as new expressions for the valence electron density, polarity of the bond and the cohesive energy, are then derived. The theory gives a good account of the experimentally observed trends in all properties considered and approximate quantitative agreement is achieved for the pseudodipolar coefficient.

Round-Trip Missions to Low-Delta-V Asteroids and Implications for Material Retrieval

Low-delta-V asteroids are to be found among those which have perihelia near 1 AU. From the 50 known asteroids with perihelia less than 1.5 AU, 10 candidates for asteroid retrieval missions were selected on the basis of low eccentricity and inclination. To estimate the ranges of orbital elements for which capture in earth orbit may be feasible, a survey was made of 180 deg transfer from a set of orbits having elements near those of the earth to the earth. For 2 of the 10 low-delta-V asteroids and for an additional one with elements more earth-like than any yet known, direct ballistic round trips in the 1980's were computed. A stay time of several months at the asteroid was used. The results show that the total delta V, including that for rendezvous with earth upon return, for the known asteroids is above 14 km/sec. But if asteroids are found similar to the strawman considered, the total delta V could be as low as 10 km/sec.

Recycling isoelectric focusing with computer controlled data acquisition system

Isoelectric focusing is a high-resolution technique for separating and purifying large peptides, proteins, and other biomolecules. The apparatus described in the present paper constitutes a new approach to fluid stabilization and increased throughput. Stabilization is achieved by flowing the process fluid uniformly through an array of closely spaced filter elements oriented parallel both to the electrodes and the direction of the flow. This seems to overcome the major difficulties of parabolic flow and electroosmosis at the walls, while limiting the convection to chamber compartments defined by adjacent spacers. Increased throughput is achieved by recirculating the process fluid through external heat exchange reservoirs, where the Joule heat is dissipated.
