Fine-line sensitivity for holographic interferograms

Improvement in sensitivity of holography, the technique of lensless interferometry, is obtained by enhancing the higher-order structure in the interferogram. By using the light diffracted into higher orders than the first, phase sensitivity is increased over the first order sensitivity by a factor equal to the order number used.

Preparation of fine-particles at cryogenic temperatures

Flash freezing process yields gelling agent for use at cryogenic temperatures. Vaporized material, diluted with an inert gas, is injected below the surface of an agitated cryogenic liquid. This method disperses particles of chlorine trifluoride in liquid oxygen difluoride.

Intensity oscillation in H alpha-fine structures

Using a new technique of directly measuring the intensity variation from the 16mm time-lapse filtergram movies taken in the blue wing and in the line center of H-alpha, periodic intensity oscillations were found in the center of H-alpha supergranulation network, in rosette centers, and in plage granules. The oscillatory period of intensity in the network is of the order of 170 + or - 44 seconds while in regions of stronger magnetic field, such as in plages and in rosettes, the period was found to be longer, on the order of 300 + or - 50 seconds. It is suggested that observed intensity oscillation in the rosette center is related to the shooting out of dark mottles from rosettes. Oscillatory intensity fluctuations were also observed in the sunspot umbra.

An electrolytic process for ultra fine beryllium

Studies were made on the electrolysis of a molten BeCl2-NaCl bath using a mercury cathode and beryllium anode. A quasi-amalgam was obtained. The beryllium was consolidated by direct hot pressing of the amalgam at temperatures in the range of 800 C and using pressures of 5,000, 10,000 and 20,000 psi. The work confirms the ability to produce ultrafine beryllium particles by electrolysis.

H alpha fine structure and the chromospheric field.

Study of the physical characteristics of the H alpha structures previously defined as fibrils and threads. The interpretation of the fibrils as ends of flux tubes is useful in tracing the behavior of the transverse field component over the solar surface. The observed properties of fibrils and threads are consistent with the hypothesis that they are produced by a shock wave mechanism similar to that advanced by Parker (1963) to explain spicules. It is suggested that the undisturbed magnetic field in the chromosphere of an active region is confined to a thin sheath, while the field of the quiet regions extends into the corona.
