Convolutional code performance in the Rician fading channel

The performance of short constraint length convolutional codes in conjunction with binary phase-shift keyed (BPSK) modulation and Viterbi maximum likelihood decoding on the classical Rician fading channel is examined in detail. Primary interest is in the bit error probability performance as a function of E sub b/N sub 0 parameterized by the fading channel parameters. Fairly general upper bounds on bit error probability performance in the presence of fading are obtained and compared with simulation results in the two extremes of zero channel memory and infinite channel memory. The efficacy of simple block interleaving in combating the memory of the channel is thoroughly explored. Results include the effects of fading on tracking loop performance and the subsequent impact on overall coded system performance. The approach is analytical where possible; otherwise resort is made to digital computer simulation.

Performance of coded MFSK in a Rician fading channel

The performance of convolutional codes in conjunction with noncoherent multiple frequency shift-keyed (MFSK) modulation and Viterbi maximum likelihood decoding on a Rician fading channel is examined in detail. While the primary motivation underlying this work has been concerned with system performance on the planetary entry channel, it is expected that the results are of considerably wider interest. Particular attention is given to modeling the channel in terms of a few meaningful parameters which can be correlated closely with the results of theoretical propagation studies. Fairly general upper bounds on bit error probability performance in the presence of fading are derived and compared with simulation results using both unquantized and quantized receiver outputs. The effects of receiver quantization and channel memory are investigated and it is concluded that the coded noncoherent MFSK system offers an attractive alternative to coherent BPSK in providing reliable low data rate communications in fading channels typical of planetary entry missions.

An operational video data compression system for ATS and ITOS

An operational data compression system has been developed and implemented for transmission of digitized ATS and ITOS-VHRR satellite video data over the wideband communication link between the Wallops Island, Va. Command and Data Acquisition Station and the National Environmental Satellite Service at Suitland, Md. This system uses minicomputers for the coding and decoding of the data to achieve maximum flexibility together with specially designed interface equipment for greater efficiency. No loss in data quality occurs due to the compression, and, in certain cases, data is transmitted which would be otherwise unavailable due to the limited channel capacity. This paper describes the method of compression, the equipment used, and the compression results attained.

Applications of satellite technology for regional organizations (Project ASTRO)

The direct arithmetic processing of adaptive delta modulation (ADM) encoded signals, conversion from ADM encoded signals to pulse code modulation (PCM) encoded signals, and conversion from PCM to ADM encoded signals are discussed. It is shown that signals which are ADM encoded can be arithmetically processed directly, without first decoding. Operating on the DM bit stream, and employing only standard digital hardware, the sum, difference and product can be obtained in PCM and ADM format.

Design of a digital compression technique for shuttle television

The determination of the performance and hardware complexity of data compression algorithms applicable to color television signals, were studied to assess the feasibility of digital compression techniques for shuttle communications applications. For return link communications, it is shown that a nonadaptive two dimensional DPCM technique compresses the bandwidth of field-sequential color TV to about 13 MBPS and requires less than 60 watts of secondary power. For forward link communications, a facsimile coding technique is recommended which provides high resolution slow scan television on a 144 KBPS channel. The onboard decoder requires about 19 watts of secondary power.

System for producing chroma signals

A method for obtaining electronic chroma signals with a single scanning-type image device is described. A color multiplexed light signal is produced using an arrangement of dichroic filter stripes. In the particular system described, a two layer filter is used to color modulate external light which is then detected by an image pickup tube. The resulting time division multiplexed electronic signal from the pickup tube is converted by a decoder into a green color signal, and a single red-blue multiplexed signal, which is demultiplexed to produce red and blue color signals. The three primary color signals can be encoded as standard NTSC color signals.

Communication system analysis for manned space flight

One- and two-dimensional adaptive delta modulator (ADM) algorithms are discussed and compared. Results are shown for bit rates of two bits/pixel, one bit/pixel and 0.5 bits/pixel. Pictures showing the difference between the encoded-decoded pictures and the original pictures are presented. The effect of channel errors on the reconstructed picture is illustrated. A two-dimensional ADM using interframe encoding is also presented. This system operates at the rate of two bits/pixel and produces excellent quality pictures when there is little motion. The effect of large amounts of motion on the reconstructed picture is described.

A photon-counting multichannel spectrometer

A multichannel detector system is described in which the positions of individual photon events in a high-gain image intensifier are decoded in the output of a video detector. The high-gain intensifier consists of a pair of three-stage electrostatic image-tube assemblies each containing three fiber-optically-coupled tubes potted in a rugged package with an internal high-voltage supply. Operation of the electrooptical system is discussed along with the pulse-detection process and the operation of the spectrograph in which the image-tube assembly is mounted. It is noted that the spectrometer detects 1.0 count/sec per A for an object of magnitude 13.0 at the peak of its response in the visual band when no light is lost on the slit, that a 10% coincidence correction is reached at an overall count rate of 860 per sec, and that the response follows an exponential law up to count rates of about 4000 per sec. The measured spectrum of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 5548 is provided as an example of the raw data produced by the instrument on a 1.5 meter telescope.

These latter codes are simultaneously optimal for the following distance measures: distance profile, minimum distance, and free distance; they appear attractive for use with Viterbi decoders. Comparisons with previously known codes are made.

DIFMOS - A floating-gate electrically erasable nonvolatile semiconductor memory technology

Electrically alterable read-only memories (EAROM's) or reprogrammable read-only memories (RPROM's) can be fabricated using a single-level metal-gate p-channel MOS technology with all conventional processing steps. Given the acronym DIFMOS for dual-injector floating-gate MOS, this technology utilizes the floating-gate technique for nonvolatile storage of data. Avalanche injection of hot electrons through gate oxide from a special injector diode in each bit is used to charge the floating gates. A second injector structure included in each bit permits discharge of the floating gate by avalanche injection of holes through gate oxide. The overall design of the DIFMOS bit is dictated by the physical considerations required for each of the avalanche injector types. The end result is a circuit technology which can provide fully decoded bit-erasable EAROM-type circuits using conventional manufacturing techniques.

Simulated performance of coded PCM/FM modem on Rician fading channel

This paper describes a simulation approach to characterizing the performance of a coded PCM/FM modem operating on the classical Rician fading channel. In particular, we consider the performance of short constraint length convolutional codes in conjunction with Viterbi maximum likelihood decoding. The receiver consists of a narrowband filter followed by an ideal limiter/discriminator. Primary interest is in the bit error probability performance parameterized by both the fading channel and receiver parameters. Particular attention is given to simulating the impulse noise appearing at the discriminator output. This is the 'click' noise caused by encirclements of the origin by the instantaneous signal-plus-noise phasor. Results include the effects of channel memory and narrowband receiver filtering effects on overall bit error probability.

Performance of convolutionally encoded noncoherent MFSK modem in fading channels

The performance of a convolutionally encoded noncoherent multiple-frequency shift-keyed (MFSK) modem utilizing Viterbi maximum-likelihood decoding and operating on a fading channel is described. Both the lognormal and classical Rician fading channels are considered for both slow and time-varying channel conditions. Primary interest is in the resulting bit error rate as a function of the ratio between the energy per transmitted information bit and noise spectral density, parameterized by both the fading channel and code parameters. Fairly general upper bounds on bit error probability are provided and compared with simulation results in the two extremes of zero and infinite channel memory. The efficacy of simple block interleaving in combatting channel memory effects are thoroughly explored. Both quantized and unquantized receiver outputs are considered.
