Predictions of LAGOON Nose Landing Gear Flow and Noise Using Wall-Modeled Large-Eddy Simulations

Wall-modeled large-eddy simulations (WMLESs) of the LAGOON nose landing gear are conducted with compressible Navier–Stokes equations and immersed boundary technique using the Launch, Ascent, and Vehicle Aerodynamics (LAVA) framework. The simulations are conducted using six different Cartesian octree meshes for the grid sensitivity analysis of the near-field and far-field numerical predictions, where the far-field noise results are computed with the Ffowcs Williams–Hawkings acoustic analogy. The effects of numerical tripping induced at the exact locations of the tripping devices in the experiments are also examined. In general, better comparison with the experimental results are shown for the the near-field results obtained with the simulations under the effects of numerical tripping. The effects of tripping are not significant on the far-field noise calculations and the results have reasonable comparison with the experimental data in the low and medium frequency ranges when an impermeable formulation of the acoustic analogy is used.

Multi-mode power split hybrid transmission with two planetary gear mechanisms

A multi-mode, power-split hybrid transmission system having two planetary gear (PG) sets connected to one engine, two electric motors, one output shaft, and each other by several clutches, brakes, and direct connection elements. Depending on the specific location and actuation of the various clutch and brake elements, the multi-mode, power-split hybrid transmission system can be run in one of several modes (e.g. electric drive, power-split, parallel hybrid, series hybrid, electronic continuously variable transmission (eCVT), generator, neutral, and the like).

Cycloidal magnetic gear system

A cycloidal magnetic gear system for a turbine system is disclosed. The system includes a first stator magnet ring, a second stator magnet ring positioned opposite the first stator magnet ring, and a rotor positioned between the first and second stator rings of magnets. The rotor may include a first side positioned adjacent the first stator magnet ring, and a second side positioned adjacent the second stator magnet ring. The system may include a first rotor magnet ring affixed to the first side of the rotor, adjacent the first stator magnet ring. Additionally, the system may include a second rotor magnet ring affixed to the second side of the rotor, adjacent the second stator magnet ring. The rotor may be configured to rotate eccentrically about a center-axis of the first and/or second stator magnet ring.

A compact design for an electric driven hydraulic gear machine capable of multiple quadrant operation

This paper presents an innovative design of an integrated electro-hydraulic (EH) flow generation unit able to operate in multiple quadrants. The proposed unit is composed of a hydraulic machine which can operate in either pumping or motoring mode, and an electric machine, which can operate as electric motor or generator. The adopted morphological integration of the two unit fulfills the goals of maximizing compactness, power to weight ratio, energy efficiency and quietness. Furthermore, the design results from a numerical optimization procedure that includes detailed simulation of both the electric machine and the hydraulic machine, using simulation tools previously developed by the authors, but combined for the first time in this work. After describing the optimization procedure, the paper focuses on the design integration aspects of the novel unit. A 9 kW prototype of the integrated unit was also fabricated and tested to verify its performance. Tests results show a measured overall energy efficiency up to 69%, demonstrating the potentials of the proposed concept, despite some limitations present in the first prototypes which could be addressed in future design refinements.

Parallel Hybrid Gas-Electric Geared Turbofan Engine Conceptual Design and Benefits Analysis

The conceptual design of a parallel gas-electric hybrid propulsion system for a conventional single aisle twin engine tube and wing vehicle has been developed. The study baseline vehicle and engine technology are discussed, followed by results of the hybrid propulsion system sizing and performance analysis. The weights analysis for the electric energy storage & conversion system and thermal management system is described. Finally, the potential system benefits are assessed.
