Time operators and time crystals: self-adjointness by topology change

We investigate time operators in the context of quantum time crystals in ring systems. A generalized commutation relation called the generalized weak Weyl relation is used to derive a class of self-adjoint time operators for ring systems with a periodic time evolution: The conventional Aharonov–Bohm time operator is obtained by taking the infinite-radius limit. Then, we discuss the connection between time operators, time crystals and real-space topology. We also reveal the relationship between our time operators and a $ΡΤ$-symmetric time operator. These time operators are then used to derive several energy-time uncertainty relations.

Approximate Recovery and Relative Entropy I: General von Neumann Subalgebras

We prove the existence of a universal recovery channel that approximately recovers states on a von Neumann subalgebra when the change in relative entropy, with respect to a fixed reference state, is small. Our result is a generalization of previous results that applied to type-I von Neumann algebras by Junge at al. [arXiv:1509.07127]. We broadly follow their proof strategy but consider here arbitrary von Neumann algebras, where qualitatively new issues arise. Our results hinge on the construction of certain analytic vectors and computations/estimations of their Araki–Masuda L p norms. We comment on applications to the quantum null energy condition.

Effect of minimal length uncertainty on the mass–radius relation of white dwarfs

Generalized uncertainty relation that carries the imprint of quantum gravity introduces a minimal length scale into the description of space–time. It effectively changes the invariant measure of the phase space through a factor (1+βp{sup 2}){sup −3} so that the equation of state for an electron gas undergoes a significant modification from the ideal case. It has been shown in the literature (Rashidi 2016) that the ideal Chandrasekhar limit ceases to exist when the modified equation of state due to the generalized uncertainty is taken into account. To assess the situation in a more complete fashion, we analyze in detail the mass–radius relation of Newtonian white dwarfs whose hydrostatic equilibria are governed by the equation of state of the degenerate relativistic electron gas subjected to the generalized uncertainty principle. As the constraint of minimal length imposes a severe restriction on the availability of high momentum states, it is speculated that the central Fermi momentum cannot have values arbitrarily higher than p{sub max}∼β{sup −1∕2}. When this restriction is imposed, it is found that the system approaches limiting mass values higher than the Chandrasekhar mass upon decreasing the parameter β to a value given by a legitimate upper bound. Instead, when the more realistic restriction due to inverse β-decay is considered, it is found that the mass and radius approach the values 1.4518 M{sub ⊙} and 601.18 km near the legitimate upper bound for the parameter β.

Adding Hierarchical Objects to Relational Database General-Purpose XML-Based Information Managements

NETMARK is a flexible, high-throughput software system for managing, storing, and rapid searching of unstructured and semi-structured documents. NETMARK transforms such documents from their original highly complex, constantly changing, heterogeneous data formats into well-structured, common data formats in using Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and/or Extensible Markup Language (XML). The software implements an object-relational database system that combines the best practices of the relational model utilizing Structured Query Language (SQL) with those of the object-oriented, semantic database model for creating complex data. In particular, NETMARK takes advantage of the Oracle 8i object-relational database model using physical-address data types for very efficient keyword searches of records across both context and content. NETMARK also supports multiple international standards such as WEBDAV for drag-and-drop file management and SOAP for integrated information management using Web services. The document-organization and -searching capabilities afforded by NETMARK are likely to make this software attractive for use in disciplines as diverse as science, auditing, and law enforcement.

Spacecraft dynamics characterization and control system failure detection. Volume 3: Control system failure monitoring

We discuss the application of Generalized Parity Relations to two experimental flexible space structures, the NASA Langley Mini-Mast and Marshall Space Flight Center ACES mast. We concentrate on the generation of residuals and make no attempt to implement the Decision Function. It should be clear from the examples that are presented whether it would be possible to detect the failure of a specific component. We derive the equations from Generalized Parity Relations. Two special cases are treated: namely, Single Sensor Parity Relations (SSPR) and Double Sensor Parity Relations (DSPR). Generalized Parity Relations for actuators are also derived. The NASA Langley Mini-Mast and the application of SSPR and DSPR to a set of displacement sensors located at the tip of the Mini-Mast are discussed. The performance of a reduced order model that includes the first five models of the mast is compared to a set of parity relations that was identified on a set of input-output data. Both time domain and frequency domain comparisons are made. The effect of the sampling period and model order on the performance of the Residual Generators are also discussed. Failure detection experiments where the sensor set consisted of two gyros and an accelerometer are presented. The effects of model order and sampling frequency are again illustrated. The detection of actuator failures is discussed. We use Generalized Parity Relations to monitor control system component failures on the ACES mast. An overview is given of the Failure Detection Filter and experimental results are discussed. Conclusions and directions for future research are given.

Relation Between the Generalized Acoustic Analogy and Lilley's Contributions to Aeroacoustics

This paper reviews Lilley s reformulation of Lighthill s equation and shows that it can be obtained as a special case of a much more general acoustic analogy. It also shows how this generalized analogy can be used to eliminate some of the difficulties that arise when more conventional parallel flow analogies are applied to high speed jets. And, finally, some recent applications of these ideas are discussed.

Generalization of the Manley-Rowe relations for non-periodic signals constrained in bandwidth with finite energy

General relations for the energy spectral densities of nonperiodic signals constrained in bandwidth in nonlinear reactances are derived. It is assumed that the charge-voltage characteristics of the reactances are polynomials. In addition certain conditions for the frequency bands of the signals must be met. By contrast with the Manley-Rowe relations integrals with respect to frequency appear instead of the ratios power over frequency. The integrands are energy spectral densities divided by frequency. For parametric devices inequalities can be derived for the ratios of the energy levels in the different circuits and the limiting frequencies of the energy spectral densities. With these inequalities it is possible to determine limits for the energy levels.

Order-Reduced Solution of the Nonlinear High-Fidelity Generalized Method of Cells Micromechanics Relations

The High-Fidelity Generalized Method of Cells (HFGMC) is one technique for accurately simulating nonlinear composite material behavior. The HFGMC uses a higher-order approximation for the subcell displacement field that allows for a more accurate determination of the subcell stressstrain fields at the cost of some computational efficiency. In order to reduce computational costs associated with the solution of the ensuing system of simultaneous equations, the HFGMC global system of equations for doubly-periodic repeating unit cells with nonlinear constituents was reduced in size through the use of a Petrov-Galerkin-based Proper Orthogonal Decomposition order-reduction scheme. A number of cases were presented that address the computational feasibility of using order-reduction techniques to solve solid mechanics problems involving complex microstructures.

Combination of TOPEX/POSEIDON Data with a Hydrographic Inversion for Determination of the Oceanic General Circulation and its Relation to Geoid Accuracy

A global estimate of the absolute oceanic general circulation from a geostrophic inversion of in situ hydrographic data is tested against and then combined with an estimate obtained from TOPEX/POSEIDON altimetric data and a geoid model computed using the JGM-3 gravity-field solution. Within the quantitative uncertainties of both the hydrographic inversion and the geoid estimate, the two estimates derived by very different methods are consistent. When the in situ inversion is combined with the altimetry/geoid scheme using a recursive inverse procedure, a new solution, fully consistent with both hydrography and altimetry, is found. There is, however, little reduction in the uncertainties of the calculated ocean circulation and its mass and heat fluxes because the best available geoid estimate remains noisy relative to the purely oceanographic inferences. The conclusion drawn from this is that the comparatively large errors present in the existing geoid models now limit the ability of satellite altimeter data to improve directly the general ocean circulation models derived from in situ measurements. Because improvements in the geoid could be realized through a dedicated spaceborne gravity recovery mission, the impact of hypothetical much better, future geoid estimates on the circulation uncertainty is also quantified, showing significant hypothetical reductions in the uncertainties of oceanic transport calculations. Full ocean general circulation models could better exploit both existing oceanographic data and future gravity-mission data, but their present use is severely limited by the inability to quantify their error budgets.

Growth of accretion driven scalar hair around Kerr black holes

We report that Scalar fields around compact objects are of interest for scalar-tensor theories of gravity and dark matter models consisting of a massive scalar, e.g., axions. We study the behavior of a scalar field around a Kerr black hole with nontrivial asymptotic boundary conditions - both nonzero density and nonzero angular momentum. Starting from an initial radially homogeneous configuration, a scalar cloud is accreted, which asymptotes to known stationary configurations over time. We study the cloud growth for different parameters including black hole spin, scalar field mass, and the scalar field density and angular momentum far from the black hole. We characterize the transient growth of the mass and angular momentum in the cloud, and the spatial profile of the scalar around the black hole, and relate the results of fully nonlinear simulations to an analytic perturbative expansion. We also highlight the potential for these accreted clouds to create monochromatic gravitational wave signals - similar to the signals from superradiant clouds, although significantly weaker in amplitude.

Diagonal Approximation for Holographic Rényi Entropies

Recently, Dong et al., [A modified cosmic brane proposal for holographic Renyi entropy, J. High Energy Phys. 06 (2024) 120] proposed a modified cosmic brane prescription for computing the Rényi entropy 𝑆𝛼 of a holographic system in the presence of multiple extremal surfaces. This prescription was found by assuming a diagonal approximation, where the Rényi entropy is computed after first measuring the areas of all extremal surfaces. We derive this diagonal approximation for the case of two extremal surfaces and show that it accurately computes Rényi entropies up to 𝑂⁡(log⁡𝐺) corrections. For 𝛼 <1, this allows us to derive the modified cosmic brane prescription, which differs from the original cosmic brane prescription at leading order in 𝐺. For 𝛼 >1, it leads to the original cosmic brane prescription without needing to assume that replica symmetry is unbroken in the bulk.

Trends and controls of terrestrial gross primary productivity of China during 2000–2016

Terrestrial gross primary productivity (GPP) is an important flux that drives the global carbon cycle. However, quantifying the trend and the control factor of GPP from the pixel level to the regional level is still a challenge. We generated monthly GPP dataset using the vegetation photosynthesis model and calculated the interannual linear trend for China during 2000-2016. The Breaks For Additive Seasonal and Trend method was applied to detect the timing of breakpoint and trends shift of monthly GPP, while boosted regression tree analysis was used to identify the most important factor and its relative influence on GPP based on gridded leaf area index (LAI), aerosol optical thickness, and NCEP-DOE Reanalysis II meteorological data. The results show that annual mean GPP was significantly (P < 0.001, R 2 = 0.78) increased, especially in the Loess Plateau and South China, from 2000 to 2016. The change rate of annual mean GPP declined from 18.82 g C m -2 yr -1 in 2000-2008 to 3.48 g C m -2 yr -1 in 2008-2016. About 55.4% of the breakpoints occur between 2009 and 2011 and was mainly distributed in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Central China, Southwestern China, and South China, and negative oriented GPP trends variation type still accounts for about 28.76%. LAI and temperature related factors generally had the highest relative influence on GPP in the north part and south part of China, respectively. Our study indicates that the ecological restoration projects and rapid urbanization have respectively induced the most obvious increase and decrease trends of GPP in China. Land cover change and climate change are the main reasons for GPP dynamics in the north and south part of China, respectively.

Cosmological Bounces Induced by a Fermion Condensate

Here, we show that it is possible for fermion condensation of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio type to induce a non-singular bounce that smoothly connects a phase of slow contraction to a phase of expansion. A chiral condensate—a non-zero vacuum expectation value of the spinor bilinear <Ψ¯Ψ> — can form spontaneously after a slow contraction phase smooths and flattens the universe and the Ricci-curvature exceeds a critical value. In this approach, a high density of spin-aligned free fermions is not required, which avoids the problem of generating a large anisotropy and initiating chaotic mixmaster behavior during the bounce phase.
