Fault recovery in the reliable multicast protocol

The Reliable Multicast Protocol (RMP) provides a unique, group-based model for distributed programs that need to handle reconfiguration events at the application layer. This model, called membership views, provides an abstraction in which events such as site failures, network partitions, and normal join-leave events are viewed as group reformations. RMP provides access to this model through an application programming interface (API) that notifies an application when a group is reformed as the result of a some event. RMP provides applications with reliable delivery of messages using an underlying IP Multicast (12, 5) media to other group members in a distributed environment even in the case of reformations. A distributed application can use various Quality of Service (QoS) levels provided by RMP to tolerate group reformations. This paper explores the implementation details of the mechanisms in RMP that provide distributed applications with membership view information and fault recovery capabilities.

Software Engineering Tools for Scientific Models

Software tools were constructed to address issues the NASA Fortran development community faces, and they were tested on real models currently in use at NASA. These proof-of-concept tools address the High-End Computing Program and the Modeling, Analysis, and Prediction Program. Two examples are the NASA Goddard Earth Observing System Model, Version 5 (GEOS-5) atmospheric model in Cell Fortran on the Cell Broadband Engine, and the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) coupled atmosphere- ocean model called ModelE, written in fixed format Fortran.

Shuttle cryogenic supply system. Optimization study. Volume 5 B-1: Programmers manual for math models

A computer program for rapid parametric evaluation of various types of cryogenics spacecraft systems is presented. The mathematical techniques of the program provide the capability for in-depth analysis combined with rapid problem solution for the production of a large quantity of soundly based trade-study data. The program requires a large data bank capable of providing characteristics performance data for a wide variety of component assemblies used in cryogenic systems. The program data requirements are divided into: (1) the semipermanent data tables and source data for performance characteristics and (2) the variable input data which contains input parameters which may be perturbated for parametric system studies.

Surface fluctuating pressure measurements on a 1/4-scale YC-14 boilerplate model

A research program is conducted for the study of the fluctuating loads imposed on both upper-surface blown-flap and externally blown-flap powered-lift STOL aircraft configurations by the impingement of the jet engine exhaust flow. Attention is given to the measurement of the unsteady pressures at 30 positions in the vicinity of the jet exhaust on the surface of a NASA 1/4-scale YC-14 boilerplate wing and fuselage section.

A computer program for full-coverage film-cooled blading analysis including the effects of a thermal barrier coating

The program input, coolant flow and heat transfer model, and the program output are discussed. As an example, sections of the suction and pressure sides of a high temperature, high pressure turbine vane are analyzed to show the effects of a thermal barrier coating. Compared to the uncoated design, the coating halves the required coolant flow, while simultaneously reducing metal outer temperatures by over 111 K.

Global crustal response model

A computer program was developed for calculating the radial displacement due to the body tide as a function of spatial position and time. The positions of the moon and sun were evaluated by means of the Hill-Brown and Newcomb theories, respectively. Green's functions were utilized to simulate the elastic Earth responses due to point loads, a convolution program has been developed to evaluate the elastic Earth responses due to ocean loading by a given ocean tide constituent. These responses include radial and horizontal displacement, tilt and gravity acceleration, and strain tensor components.

Modelling of polymer photodegradation for solar cell modules

A computer program developed to model and calculate by numerical integration the varying concentrations of chemical species formed during photooxidation of a polymeric material over time, using as input data a choice set of elementary reactions, corresponding rate constants and a convenient set of starting conditions is evaluated. Attempts were made to validate the proposed mechanism by experimentally monitoring the photooxidation products of small liquid alkane which are useful starting models for ethylene segments of polymers like EVA. The model system proved in appropriate for the intended purposes. Another validation model is recommended.

Freeze Prediction Model

Measurements of wind speed, net irradiation, and of air, soil, and dew point temperatures in an orchard at the Rock Springs Agricultural Research Center, as well as topographical and climatological data and a description of the major apple growing regions of Pennsylvania were supplied to the University of Florida for use in running the P-model, freeze prediction program. Results show that the P-model appears to have considerable applicability to conditions in Pennsylvania. Even though modifications may have to be made for use in the fruit growing regions, there are advantages for fruit growers with the model in its present form.

Field study of the effect of orographic features on planetary boundary layer models

A flight program to measure the influence of orographic features on turbulent momentum, heat, and moisture fluxes was carried out. Characteristic wake flow patterns were observed in laboratory studies. While the upper level winds (above 10,000 ft msl) blow from west to east (perpendicular to the mountain range), flow patterns similar to flow from a backward-facing step are observed. When the upper level winds blow at 301 and 312 deg from true north (slightly oblique to the mountain range), experimental evidence suggests flow patterns typical of a vortex shed from the mountain range similar to a leading edge vortex from a delta wing aircraft. The observed flow patterns are analyzed. It is concluded that wake flow very similar to those observed in laboratory facilities can occur due to winds over mountain ranges. Results of studies in the laboratory may shed considerable insight to atmospheric boundary layer winds obstructed by orographic features.

Thermal barrier coating life prediction model development

This program focuses on predicting the lives of two types of strain-tolerant and oxidation-resistant thermal barrier coating (TBC) systems that are produced by commercial coating suppliers to the gas turbine industry. The plasma-sprayed TBC system is composed of a low pressure, plasma sprayed applied, oxidation resistant NiCrAlY bond coating. The other system is an air plasma sprayed yttria (8 percent) partially stabilized zirconia insulative layer.

Noninteractive macroscopic reliability model for ceramic matrix composites with orthotropic material symmetry

A macroscopic noninteractive reliability model for ceramic matrix composites is presented. The model is multiaxial and applicable to composites that can be characterized as orthotropic. Tensorial invariant theory is used to create an integrity basis with invariants that correspond to physical mechanisms related to fracture. This integrity basis is then used to construct a failure function per unit volume (or area) of material. It is assumed that the overall strength of the composite is governed by weakest link theory. This leads to a Weibull type model similar in nature to the principle of independent action (PIA) model for isotropic monolithic ceramics. An experimental program to obtain model parameters is briefly discussed. In addition, qualitative features of the model are illustrated by presenting reliability surfaces for various model parameters.

An experimental program aimed at identifying areas in low speed aerodynamic research where infrared imaging systems can make significant contributions is discussed. Implementing a new technique, a long electrically heated wire was placed across a laminar flow. By measuring the temperature distribution along the wire with the IR imaging camera, the flow behavior was identified.

ASDA - Advanced Suit Design Analyzer computer program

An ASDA model developed to evaluate the heat and mass transfer characteristics of advanced pressurized suit design concepts for low pressure or vacuum planetary applications is presented. The model is based on a generalized 3-layer suit that uses the Systems Integrated Numerical Differencing Analyzer '85 in conjunction with a 41-node FORTRAN routine. The latter simulates the transient heat transfer and respiratory processes of a human body in a suited environment. The user options for the suit encompass a liquid cooled garment, a removable jacket, a CO2/H2O permeable layer, and a phase change layer.
