Neuromorphic overparameterisation and few-shot learning in multilayer physical neural networks

Abstract Physical neuromorphic computing, exploiting the complex dynamics of physical systems, has seen rapid advancements in sophistication and performance. Physical reservoir computing, a subset of neuromorphic computing, faces limitations due to its reliance on single systems. This constrains output dimensionality and dynamic range, limiting performance to a narrow range of tasks. Here, we engineer a suite of nanomagnetic array physical reservoirs and interconnect them in parallel and series to create a multilayer neural network architecture. The output of one reservoir is recorded, scaled and virtually fed as input to the next reservoir. This networked approach increases output dimensionality, internal dynamics and computational performance. We demonstrate that a physical neuromorphic system can achieve an overparameterised state, facilitating meta-learning on small training sets and yielding strong performance across a wide range of tasks. Our approach’s efficacy is further demonstrated through few-shot learning, where the system rapidly adapts to new tasks.

Quantum Circuits for the Preparation of Spin Eigenfunctions on Quantum Computers

The application of quantum algorithms to the study of many-particle quantum systems requires the ability to prepare wave functions that are relevant in the behavior of the system under study. Hamiltonian symmetries are important instruments used to classify relevant many-particle wave functions and to improve the efficiency of numerical simulations. In this work, quantum circuits for the exact and approximate preparation of total spin eigenfunctions on quantum computers are presented. Two different strategies are discussed and compared: exact recursive construction of total spin eigenfunctions based on the addition theorem of angular momentum, and heuristic approximation of total spin eigenfunctions based on the variational optimization of a suitable cost function. The construction of these quantum circuits is illustrated in detail, and the preparation of total spin eigenfunctions is demonstrated on IBM quantum devices, focusing on three- and five-spin systems on graphs with triangle connectivity.

Using scalable computer vision to automate high-throughput semiconductor characterization

Abstract High-throughput materials synthesis methods, crucial for discovering novel functional materials, face a bottleneck in property characterization. These high-throughput synthesis tools produce 10 4 samples per hour using ink-based deposition while most characterization methods are either slow (conventional rates of 10 1 samples per hour) or rigid (e.g., designed for standard thin films), resulting in a bottleneck. To address this, we propose automated characterization (autocharacterization) tools that leverage adaptive computer vision for an 85x faster throughput compared to non-automated workflows. Our tools include a generalizable composition mapping tool and two scalable autocharacterization algorithms that: (1) autonomously compute the band gaps of 200 compositions in 6 minutes, and (2) autonomously compute the environmental stability of 200 compositions in 20 minutes, achieving 98.5% and 96.9% accuracy, respectively, when benchmarked against domain expert manual evaluation. These tools, demonstrated on the formamidinium (FA) and methylammonium (MA) mixed-cation perovskite system FA 1−x MA x PbI 3 , 0 ≤ x ≤ 1, significantly accelerate the characterization process, synchronizing it closer to the rate of high-throughput synthesis.

Improved constraints on hematite refractive index for estimating climatic effects of dust aerosols

Abstract Uncertainty in desert dust composition poses a big challenge to understanding Earth’s climate across different epochs. Of particular concern is hematite, an iron-oxide mineral dominating the solar absorption by dust particles, for which current estimates of absorption capacity vary by over two orders of magnitude. Here, we show that laboratory measurements of dust composition, absorption, and scattering provide valuable constraints on the absorption potential of hematite, substantially narrowing its range of plausible values. The success of this constraint is supported by results from an atmospheric transport model compared with station-based measurements. Additionally, we identify substantial bias in simulating hematite abundance in dust aerosols with current soil mineralogy descriptions, underscoring the necessity for improved data sources. Encouragingly, the next-generation imaging spectroscopy remote sensing data hold promise for capturing the spatial variability of hematite. These insights have implications for enhancing dust modeling, thus contributing to efforts in climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Electrochemical Deconstruction of Ortho-Phthalate Plasticizers and Recovery of Plasticizing Moieties

Electrochemical methods for the direct reduction of alkyl esters have been understudied but provide a potential advantage for addressing specific waste streams given that such strategies often require only a minimal chemical profile. One such waste stream that could benefit from electrochemical remediation is poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) plastics. PVC recycling often faces challenges due to the complexity of such waste. Solvent-based recycling methods pose several advantages for addressing post-use PVC; however, such methods are complicated by the high amounts of toxic legacy plasticizers (ortho-phthalates) present in PVC. A potential solution to addressing such phthalates is to address them electrochemically, coupled with recovery of the resulting valuable products. Presented herein is an optimized electrochemical method for ester activation that is leveraged to separate and recover the aromatic and alkyl components of ortho-phthalate plasticizers. The resulting aliphatic alcohols may be reused to prepare other non-toxic plasticizers. This electro-degradation method is demonstrated on six phthalates that have been identified to pose health concerns in addition to plasticizers recovered from commercial samples of PVC.

Three-chamber electrochemical reactor for selective lithium extraction from brine

Efficient lithium recovery from geothermal brines is crucial for the battery industry. Current electrochemical separation methods struggle with the simultaneous presence of Na + , K + , Mg 2+ , and Ca 2+ because these cations are similar to Li + , making it challenging to separate effectively. We address these challenges with a three-chamber reactor featuring a polymer porous solid electrolyte in the middle layer. This design improves the transference number of Li + (t Li+ ) by 2.1 times compared to the two-chamber reactor and also reduces the chlorine evolution reaction, a common side reaction in electrochemical lithium extraction, to only 6.4% in Faradaic Efficiency. Employing a lithium-ion conductive glass ceramic (LICGC) membrane, the reactor achieved high t Li+ of 97.5% in LiOH production from simulated brine, while the concentrations of Na + K + , Mg 2+ , and Ca 2+ are below the detection limit. Electrochemical experiments and surface analysis elucidated the cation transport mechanism, highlighting the impact of Na + on Li + migration at the LICGC interface.

Phosphorylation toggles the SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein between two membrane-associated condensate states

Abstract The Nucleocapsid protein (N) of SARS-CoV-2 plays a critical role in the viral lifecycle by regulating RNA replication and by packaging the viral genome. N and RNA phase separate to form condensates that may be important for these functions. Both functions occur at membrane surfaces, but how N toggles between these two membrane-associated functional states is unclear. Here, we reveal that phosphorylation switches how N condensates interact with membranes, in part by modulating condensate material properties. Our studies also show that phosphorylation alters N’s interaction with viral membrane proteins. We gain mechanistic insight through structural analysis and molecular simulations, which suggest phosphorylation induces a conformational change in N that softens condensate material properties. Together, our findings identify membrane association as a key feature of N condensates and provide mechanistic insights into the regulatory role of phosphorylation. Understanding this mechanism suggests potential therapeutic targets for COVID infection.

Magnetic structure of topological nodal-line semimetal EuSb 2

Here, we investigated the magnetic structure of the magnetic topological nodal-line semimetal EuSb 2 using x-ray resonant magnetic scattering at the Eu 𝐿 3 absorption edge. Forbidden magnetic reflections confirm antiferromagnetic ordering with propagation vector 𝐪 = (0.5,0,0) below 𝑇 N ≈ 27 K. Azimuthal-angle-dependent measurements reveal that the Eu moments are aligned along the monoclinic 𝑏 axis. Comparison between the measured 𝐐-dependent magnetic Bragg peak intensities and calculations based on representation analysis identifies the magnetic structure as the A-type antiferromagnetic 𝛤 4 representation with a (++−−) arrangement along the 𝑎 direction. These results establish the microscopic magnetic structure of EuSb 2 and provide a basis for understanding the interplay between antiferromagnetism and topological electronic states in this system.

A thermal evaporation–trapping strategy to synthesize flexible and robust oxygen electrocatalysts for rechargeable zinc–air batteries

Great efforts have been devoted to the development of bifunctional electrocatalysts to accelerate the sluggish kinetics of cathodic oxygen reduction/evolution reactions (ORR/OER) in zinc–air batteries (ZABs). Here we report a thermal evaporation–trapping synergistic strategy to fabricate a bifunctional electrocatalyst of flexible N-doped carbon fiber cloth loaded with both CoFe-oxide nanoparticles and single-atom Co/Fe–Nx sites, in which the thermal evaporation process functions in both downsizing CoFe-oxide nanoparticles and trapping the evaporated Co/Fe species to generate Co/Fe–Nx sites. The obtained flexible electrocatalyst, directly serving as an oxygen electrode, displays a small potential gap of 0.542 V for the OER/ORR, large peak power densities (liquid-state ZAB: 237.4 mW cm2 ; solid-state ZAB: 141.1 mW cm2 ), and excellent charge–discharge cycling stability without decay after working more than 770 hours. Furthermore, in situ Raman spectroscopy characterization and theoretical calculations reveal that CoFe2O4 species is responsible for the OER while atomic Fe/Co sites play a key role in the ORR

Intermodal microwave-to-optical transduction using silicon-on-sapphire optomechanical ring resonator

Optomechanical and electro-optomechanical systems have emerged as one of the most promising approaches for quantum microwave-to-optical transduction to interconnect distributed quantum modalities for scaling the quantum systems. These systems use suspended structures to increase mode overlap and mitigate loss to achieve high efficiency. However, the suspended design’s poor heat dissipation under strong drive limits the ultimate efficiency. Here, we demonstrate an unsuspended optomechanical ring resonator (OMR) based on the silicon-on-sapphire (SOS) platform for microwave-to-optical frequency conversion. The OMR achieves a triply resonant optical-to-optical conversion with an enhanced coupling rateG b = 3.6 gigahertz per square-root milliwatt at a peak conversion efficiency of 1.2% with 3.6-milliwatt microwave drive power and a microwave-to-optical conversion efficiency of 1.5 × 10 −5 at 10-milliwatt optical drive power. Our results show that the unsuspended SOS platform, which mitigates the thermal effect and is compatible with superconducting qubits, is a promising platform for optomechanical circuitry and quantum transduction.

A butterfly-shaped acceptor with rigid skeleton and unique assembly enables both efficient organic photovoltaics and high-speed organic photodetectors

ABSTRACT It remains challenging to design efficient bifunctional semiconductor materials in organic photovoltaic and photodetector devices. Here, we report a butterfly-shaped molecule, named WD-6, which exhibits low energy disorder and small reorganization energy due to its enhanced molecular rigidity and unique assembly with strong intermolecular interaction. The binary photovoltaic device based on PM6:WD-6 achieved an efficiency of 18.41%. Notably, an efficiency of 19.42% was achieved for the ternary device based on PM6:BTP-eC9:WD-6. Moreover, the photodetection device based on WD-6 demonstrated an ultrafast response speed (205 ns response time at λ of 820 nm) and a high cutoff frequency of −3 dB (2.45 MHz), surpassing the values of most commercial Si photodiodes. Based on these findings, we showcased an application of the WD-6-based photodetection device in high-speed optical communication. These results offer valuable insights into the design of organic semiconductor materials capable of simultaneously exhibiting high photovoltaic and photodetective performance.

Strategic Melamine Coating on Lithium Metal for Li 3 N-Rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase and Improved Battery Cycling Stability

The practical applications of lithium (Li) metal batteries (LMBs) are limited by challenges such as dendrite formation and unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), especially at higher C-rates. Here, this study introduces melamine-coated Li metal anodes (LMAs), forming a Li 3 N-rich SEI layer that improves ionic conductivity and mechanical stability. The optimized melamine-coated LMA demonstrated uniform coverage resulting in denser Li deposition, nearly doubled cycle life (~148 cycles at 0.5 C, 1C = 4.1 mA cm -2 ), compared to Bare-Li. These findings emphasize that coating materials-induced beneficial SEI components could lead to improvement of LMB performance.

Effects of high-dose neutron irradiation at light-water reactor relevant temperature on the mechanical properties of SiC/SiC composites

For this study, the neutron dose-dependent evolutions and the underlying mechanisms of properties of SiC fiber-reinforced SiC matrix (SiC/SiC) composites at a temperature relevant to light-water reactors (∼600 K) were investigated and analyzed. Chemical vapor infiltrated (CVI) SiC/SiC composites reinforced with Hi-Nicalon Type S or Tyranno SA3 fiber were neutron-irradiated to doses up to 30 dpa. The irradiated composites retained their flexural strengths. The thermal diffusivity and dimensional changes were mostly retained from 2.0 to 30.2 dpa. Discrepancies in irradiation responses among CVI SiC/SiC composites from different sources were found. Additional microstructural analysis using Raman spectroscopy and numerical analysis on irradiation effect on residual stress were used to explain how the microstructural variables, especially of carbon interphases, affect the mechanical properties in the 30–40 dpa dose range.

Highly textured metal anodes for stable aqueous batteries: Fabrication and characterization

We report a purely mechanical “cold-compression flow” method for fabricating Zn, Sn, and In substrates with tunable crystallographic textures. Using textured Zn as a model system, we investigate Zn electrocrystallization and demonstrate correlated growth of crystalline films with correlation lengths from tens to hundreds of micrometers. At 5 milliamperes per square centimeter (mA/cm 2 ), capacities between 20 and 82 milliampere hours per square centimeter (mA·hour/cm 2 ) are achieved depending on substrate texture level. At higher currents (40 mA/cm 2 ), capacities reach up to 604 mA·hour/cm 2 . Rotating disk electrode studies show that dominantly (002) textured Zn substrates exhibit enhanced corrosion resistance and reduced interphase passivation. We introduce an effective Damköhler number (Da*) to concisely describe morphological evolution during electrocrystallization across substrates with different textures. High-texture (002) Zn substrates substantially enhance performance in high-capacity (~20 mA·hour/cm 2 ) symmetric Zn||Zn cells and full cells (Zn||δ-MnO 2 and Zn||I 2 ), enabling fast-charging and prolonged energy storage in coin and pouch rechargeable Zn battery formats.

Quantum mechanical dataset of 836k neutral closed-shell molecules with up to 5 heavy atoms from C, N, O, F, Si, P, S, Cl, Br

Abstract We introduce the Vector-QM24 (VQM24) dataset comprehensively covering all possible neutral closed-shell small organic and inorganic molecules with up to five heavy (p-block) atoms: C, N, O, F, Si, P, S, Cl, Br. All valid stoichiometries, Lewis-rule-consistent graphs, and stable conformers (identified via GFN2-xTB) were enumerated combinatorially, yielding 577k conformational isomers spanning 258k constitutional isomers and 5,599 unique stoichiometries. DFT (ωB97X-D3/cc-pVDZ) optimizations were performed for all, and diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DMC@PBE0(ccECP/cc-pVQZ)) energies are provided for 10,793 lowest-energy conformers with up to 4 heavy atoms. VQM24 includes structures, vibrational modes, rotational constants, thermodynamic properties (Gibbs free energies, enthalpies, ZPVEs, entropies, heat capacities), and electronic properties such as atomization, electron interaction, exchange-correlation, dispersion energies, multipole moments (dipole to hexadecapole), alchemical potentials, Mulliken charges, and wavefunctions. Machine learning models of atomization energies on this dataset reveal significantly higher complexity than QM9, with none achieving chemical accuracy. VQM24 offers a rigorous, high-fidelity benchmark for evaluating quantum machine learning models.

Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Catalysis of Pentlandite due to the Increases in Coordination Number and Sulfur Vacancy during Cubic‐Hexagonal Phase Transition

Abstract The search for new phases is an important direction in materials science. The phase transition of sulfides results in significant changes in catalytic performance, such as MoS 2 and WS 2 . Cubic pentlandite [cPn, (Fe, Ni) 9 S 8 ] can be a functional material in batteries, solar cells, and catalytic fields. However, no report about the material properties of other phases of pentlandite exists. In this study, the unit‐cell parameters of a new phase of pentlandite, sulfur‐vacancy enriched hexagonal pentlandite (hPn), and the phase boundary between cPn and hPn are determined for the first time. Compared to cPn, the hPn shows a high coordination number, more sulfur vacancies, and high conductivity, which result in significantly higher hydrogen evolution performance of hPn than that of cPn and make the non‐nano rock catalyst hPn superior to other most known nanosulfide catalysts. The increase of sulfur vacancies during phase transition provides a new approach to designing functional materials.

Integrated optical frequency division for microwave and mmWave generation

Abstract The generation of ultra-low-noise microwave and mmWave in miniaturized, chip-based platforms can transform communication, radar and sensing systems 1–3 . Optical frequency division that leverages optical references and optical frequency combs has emerged as a powerful technique to generate microwaves with superior spectral purity than any other approaches 4–7 . Here we demonstrate a miniaturized optical frequency division system that can potentially transfer the approach to a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor-compatible integrated photonic platform. Phase stability is provided by a large mode volume, planar-waveguide-based optical reference coil cavity 8,9 and is divided down from optical to mmWave frequency by using soliton microcombs generated in a waveguide-coupled microresonator 10–12 . Besides achieving record-low phase noise for integrated photonic mmWave oscillators, these devices can be heterogeneously integrated with semiconductor lasers, amplifiers and photodiodes, holding the potential of large-volume, low-cost manufacturing for fundamental and mass-market applications 13 .
