Manipulator technology for the space shuttle

A shuttle-attached manipulator is currently proposed as the payload-handling device for the space shuttle. Basic requirements for the manipulator involve length, force, compliance, and control. Approaches for studying control methods are presented and simulation methods are discussed. Basic details about the two earthbased manipulators selected for simulation experiments are related to the test methods. Preliminary data from one test are shown as an example of the direction of the testing. A computer-generated simulation is explained, and the relationship of the three simulations to the design problems is discussed.

H2-O2 auxiliary power unit for space shuttle vehicles

A program to establish technology readiness of hydrogen-oxygen (H2-O2) auxiliary power units for use on board the space shuttle orbiter vehicle is discussed. Fundamental objectives include experimentally establishing an acceptable propellant flow control method, verification of combustor stability, and adequate thermal management. An initial APU configuration with recycled hydrogen flow has been studied and revised towards greater simplicity and scaling ease. The selected APU is a recuperated open-cycle, turbine-driven unit. Series flow of cryogenic hydrogen removes internally-generated heat and from the hydraulic system. Steady-state test of the combustor has been successful.

H2-O2 auxiliary power unit for Space Shuttle vehicles - A progress report.

Description of a program to establish technology readiness of hydrogen-oxygen (H2-O2) auxiliary power units for use on board the Space Shuttle orbiter vehicle. Fundamental objectives include experimentally establishing an acceptable propellant flow control method, verification of combustor stability, and adequate thermal management. An initial auxiliary power unit (APU) configuration with recycled hydrogen flow has been studied and revised toward greater simplicity and scaling ease. The selected APU is a recuperated open-cycle, turbine-driven unit. Series flow of cryogenic hydrogen removes internally-generated heat and heat from the hydraulic system. The revised configuration schematic and its calculated performance are reviewed. A weight comparison is made between the shuttle baseline hydrazine and H2-O2 APU systems, showing that hydrogen-oxygen APUs have the potential of increasing the payload of the Space Shuttle.

Analysis of self-oscillating dc-to-dc converters

The basic operational characteristics of dc-to-dc converters are analyzed along with the basic physical characteristics of power converters. A simple class of dc-to-dc power converters are chosen which could satisfy any set of operating requirements, and three different controlling methods in this class are described in detail. Necessary conditions for the stability of these converters are measured through analog computer simulation whose curves are related to other operational characteristics, such as ripple and regulation. Further research is suggested for the solution of absolute stability and efficient physical design of this class of power converters.

Evaluation of the NASA Ames no. 1 7 by 10 foot wind tunnel as an acoustic test facility

Measurements were made in the no. 1 7'x10' wind tunnel at NASA Ames Research Center, with the objectives of defining the acoustic characteristics and recommending minimum cost treatments so that the tunnel can be converted into an acoustic research facility. The results indicate that the noise levels in the test section are due to (a) noise generation in the test section, associated with the presence of solid bodies such as the pitot tube, and (b) propagation of acoustic energy from the fan. A criterion for noise levels in the test section is recommended, based on low-noise microphone support systems. Noise control methods required to meet the criterion include removal of hardware items for the test section and diffuser, improved design of microphone supports, and installation of acoustic treatment in the settling chamber and diffuser.

Analysis of a class of pulse modulated dc-to-dc power converters

The basic operational characteristics of dc-to-dc converters are analyzed. The basic physical characteristics of power converters are identified. A simple class of dc-to-dc power converters is chosen which could satisfy any set of operating requirements. Three different controlling methods in this class are described in detail. Necessary conditions for the stability of these converters are measured through analog computer simulation. These curves are related to other operational characteristics, such as ripple and regulation. Finally, further research is suggested for the solution of the physical design of absolutely stable, reliable, and efficient power converters of this class.

Environmental quality

The potential use of space systems to help determine the current state of air, water, and land environments was examined; the effects of man's activities on these parameters were also examined. Data are limited to pollutants introduced into the major environmental media, environmental changes manifested by such pollutants, and the effectiveness of abatement and control methods. Data also cover land quality as related to land use and public health.

Optimization of continuous one-dimensional structures under steady harmonic excitation

The paper examines some questions relating to the optimal design of continuous one-dimensional structures driven by harmonically oscillating loads. Optimal-control methods are applied to a cantilever bar driven sinusoidally by an axial force at its tip to illustrate the minimum-weight design of one-dimensional structures under dynamic excitation. Realistic constraints are imposed during the optimizations, including a maximum allowable stress amplitude at any point along the bar and a minimum cross-sectional area. It is shown that in the absence of damping, the design space may contain many disjoint feasible regions, and multiple optima can exist. Detailed solutions are obtained for continuous bars with an excitation frequency less than, and then greater than, the fundamental free-vibration frequency. It is found that above a certain excitation frequency, two or more arcs with different constraints characterize the optimal designs. It is concluded that when more than two different constrained arcs characterize the optimal solution, the continuum approach may be impractical, and finite-element approximations may offer the only alternative.

Facts and fiction of learning systems

The methodology that will provide the updated precision for the hardware control and the advanced decision making and planning in the software control is called learning systems and intelligent control. It was developed theoretically as an alternative for the nonsystematic heuristic approaches of artificial intelligence experiments and the inflexible formulation of modern optimal control methods. Its basic concepts are discussed and some feasibility studies of some practical applications are presented.

Control of dielectric film deposition

Airgap capacitor in deposition chamber is used to monitor deposition. Coating process is completely uniform over edges, points, and internal areas. Areas not requiring coating can be marked. Since deposition process is accomplished at or near room temperature, there is no risk of thermal damage to coated components. With control method, deposition material is fully utilized and no excess coating is necessary to insure protection of coated parts.
