Man-machine interactive system simplifies computer-aided circuit design

Langley interactive computerized circuit analysis capability /LICCA/ enables designer to draw electronic circuit diagrams on cathode ray tube screen. This information is submitted as input to user-selected circuit analysis program. LICCA accommodates binary logic circuits and circuits with discrete components, and monitors operator's instructions to detect errors.

NASTRAN benefits analysis. Volume 2: Final technical report

Baseline data are considered for comparisons of the costs and benefits of the NASA structural analysis program and to determine impacts and benefits to current users. To develop this information, questionnaires were mailed to users. Personal and telephone interviews were made to solicit further information. The questions in the questionnaire and in the interview were related to benefits derived from the programs, areas of needed improvement, and applicable usage comments. The collected information was compiled and analyzed. Methodology, analyses, and results are presented. The information is applicable to issues preceding NASTRAN Level 15.

Metric analysis of minitrack optical and interferometer data

The network analysis program (NAP-2), which has the capability of simultaneously solving for orbits and tracking station error model terms, was, after several modifications, used in the calibration of minitrack stations using minitrack satellite measurements (self-calibration). Several support programs were written to aid in this task. A simultaneous four-arc solution was obtained. A comparison with optically determined arcs for the same time spans showed rms position differences of 67m, 86m, 124m and 168m for the 4 arcs considered. An apparatus incorporating a diffraction grating was designed and successfully used to measure the drift rate of the Fort Myers MOTS camera drive.

Modeling techniques of thin walled beams with open cross sections

A composite element is presented which includes the effects of warping and offset shear centers. It is shown to be mathematically consistent with thin walled open beam theory and can be incorporated into any structural analysis program by use of NASTRAN'S standard elements. A numerical example analyzing the vibration of a channel beam is presented, and, by using the composite element, the numerical results agreed well with theoretical data.

Navigation requirements for rendezvous with the satellites of Mars.

Navigation aspects of a rendezvous mission to Deimos (the outer satellite of Mars) were examined using a modified Viking Monte Carlo error analysis program. Rendezvous is initiated by two-impulse transfer from an observation orbit cotangent with the orbit of Deimos. Television sightings of the satellite against a star background will allow a 20 km closest approach radius (R99) 99% of the time. This is well within the 100 km range of the terminal rendezvous radar. An additional delta-V capability of about 100 m/sec (above the nominal) must be allocated to account for the statistical nature of the mission. This delta-V requirement was found to be very sensitive to the level of satellite ephemeris error and maneuver execution error. The R99 on the other hand, is sensitive to the in-orbit DSN error and the maneuver execution error.

Atmosphere Explorer control system software (version 1.0)

The basic design is described of the Atmosphere Explorer Control System (AECS) software used in the testing, integration, and flight contol of the AE spacecraft and experiments. The software performs several vital functions, such as issuing commands to the spacecraft and experiments, receiving and processing telemetry data, and allowing for extensive data processing by experiment analysis programs. The major processing sections are: executive control section, telemetry decommutation section, command generation section, and utility section.

Research study to determine critical optical/mechanical properties of materials considered for selection as substrates for the primary mirror on a large telescope

An investigation was conducted to evaluate the stability of a specific low expansion glass-ceramic material relative to its use as a large, lightweight mirror substrate for diffraction-limited spaceborne optical applications. These evaluations were made on a segment (0.44 meter diameter by 0.31 meter thick) of a 2 to 3 meter diameter mirror blank. The dimensional stability of this mirror was measured interferometrically before and after lightweighting, as a function of rough machining, etching, thermal environment, and support configuration. A special computer analysis program was used to plot the coefficients corresponding to aberrations with sixfold symmetry (caused by the mirror's self-weight deflection on a three point support). The objective was to enhance the test sensitivity. Results indicate that any such effects due to self-weight deflection are of the order of 0.015 lambda rms. The rms and peak-to-peak figure changes associated with each processing operation are summarized.
