Pu(IV) quantification via visible–near-infrared absorption spectroscopy: tackling interferences using D-optimal design and partial least squares

Here, this study presents a novel analytical approach for quantifying Pu(IV) in glove box environments using fiber-optic-based visible–near-infrared absorption spectroscopy in combination with partial least squares regression (PLSR) and design of experiments. The method addresses significant challenges posed by overlapping spectral features arising from Nd(III), which is a common fission product impurity, and the speciation variability of Pu(IV) nitrato complexes in HNO 3 concentrations ranging from 2.5 to 11 M. A curated training set consisting of data from 20 samples was developed via D-optimal design to enable robust PLSR model calibration for Pu(IV) using the near-infrared band near 1050 nm. The training set was acquired from samples in cuvettes with a 1-cm path length and was used to build the PLSR model. The robustness of the model was validated with data collected using a dip probe with a 1-cm path length and varying Pu(IV) concentrations. The strong performance of the model indicates good model transfer from cuvette to dip probe and highlights the potential for in situ measurements and online monitoring of reactions in a crystallization reactor vessel. The results demonstrate that this combined spectroscopic and chemometric approach can accurately and simultaneously quantify Pu(IV) and HNO 3 , thereby offering a promising tool for real-time monitoring in process environments.

Discrepancy quantification between experimental and simulated data of CO 2 adsorption isotherm using hierarchical Bayesian estimation

Here, to quantitatively analyze the inconsistencies commonly observed between experimental and simulated adsorption isotherms, parameter estimation of adsorption isotherm models was conducted by hierarchical Bayesian estimation with parameter uncertainties being quantified as probability distributions. The estimation method was implemented using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) to analyze multiple data sets obtained from different sources, including a publicly available database. To describe the discrepancies of experimental and simulated adsorption data, the simulation data was set as the reference to which experimental measurements were compared. We applied the proposed approach to analyze CO 2 adsorption isotherms that are measured and simulated on zeolite 13X and MIL-101(Cr). In these case studies, the discrepancy of CO 2 adsorption isotherm was successfully quantified between experimental measurements and predictions given by molecular simulations using Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC), where uncertainties were quantified as probability distributions. Furthermore, experimental data sets that agree well with the GCMC simulation have been identified, providing insights into experimental and measurement methods as well as choosing the right assumptions in the molecular simulation.

Quantification of gas concentrations in NO/NO 2 /C 3 H 8 /NH 3 mixtures using machine learning

We employ machine learning to decode the composition of unknown gas mixtures from the output of an array of four electrochemical sensors. The sensors use metal oxide electrodes paired with a ceramic electrolyte, yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ), to produce voltage responses to the presence of gases in complex mixtures. The voltages from the sensor array serve as inputs to a machine learning pipeline which first carries out multi-class classification of mixtures into types based on which gases are present at non-zero concentrations, and subsequently predicts gas concentrations given the mixture type. Thus, our model is able to take a single reading from the sensor array in response to gas mixtures involving NO, NO 2 , C 3 H 8 , and NH 3 , and output a highly accurate prediction of which gases are present in the mixture, along with the concentrations of each constituent gas. Of note, our computational framework can be easily expanded to include additional gases and additional mixture types, allowing it to be used in numerous automotive, industrial and environmental monitoring settings.

23.4% monolithic epitaxial GaAsP/Si tandem solar cells and quantification of losses from threading dislocations

A 2-terminal, dual-junction, epitaxially integrated, GaAsP/Si tandem solar cell with an 3rd party certified efficiency of 23.4 % was fabricated via MOCVD growth on an ex-situ produced Si sub cell. The drastic efficiency improvement over the authors previous peer-reviewed demonstration of such a device architecture is examined. Critical advancements in top cell design to maximize short wavelength response were critical in enabling improved top cell response. An in-depth analysis of this champion tandem cell has identified key loss mechanisms which elucidate the pathway for further efficiency gains. First, voltage dependent collection efficiency in the GaAsP top cell is the primary cause of fill factor losses currently limiting efficiency. Analysis of spectrally resolved I–V measurements and analytical device modeling and indicate poor diffusion length due to elevated dislocation densities as the likely cause for the voltage dependent collection efficiency. Second, modeling for the GaAs 0.75 P 0.25 top cell, using experimental data at multiple dislocation densities, provides quantitative understanding of the current and voltage losses associated with threading dislocations providing a clear efficiency pathway with reduction in dislocation density. Finally, Si subcell modeling identifies the pathway for further Si subcell advances over the present, simplistic design, which has yet to employ the known benefits of rear surface texture or dielectric passivation.

A multi-collector ICP-MS method for quantification of plutonium, uranium, and americium in hair and nails of occupationally or medically exposed individuals

The 239 Pu, 238 U, and 241 Am concentrations and 239 Pu/ 240 Pu, 235 U/ 238 U, and 236 U/ 238 U atom ratios were measured in the hair and nail samples from individuals who donated their bodies to the United States Transuranium and Uranium Registries. Further, the concentration of 239 Pu ranged from 0.22–15.8 ng/kg. The 240 Pu/ 239 Pu isotopic ratios ranged from 0.026 to 0.127 which is consistent with weapons-grade plutonium. Concentration of uranium fell between 1.84 µg/kg and 29.5 µg/kg and 235 U/ 238 U ratios ranged from 4.8×10 -3 to 7.6×10 -3 . Elevated 236 U/ 238 U atom ratios were measured in two cases and ranged from 5.0×10 -6 – 2.4×10 -5 indicating exposure to spent or reprocessed uranium material. The concentration of 241 Am was measured in four hair samples and ranged from 0.02–0.21 ng/kg.

Estimation of vehicle home parking availability in China and quantification of its potential impacts on plug-in electric vehicle ownership cost

China has become the world's largest plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market. One major barrier to greater consumer acceptance of PEVs is the lack of home parking spaces for charging outlets. This paper developed a methodology to estimate the residential parking ratios (parking spaces vs household numbers) and project the residential community-weighted parking availabilities (home parking availabilities) in China, by area and by province, through data mining from several major real estate trading network platforms. The results show that the home parking availabilities from 2015 to 2050 vary by geographic areas and building life expectancy. A method was developed to quantify the shadow values of home parking impacting on PEV ownership costs and combined with Monte Carlo simulation to address estimation uncertainty. Depending on the PEV type and all-electric range, the value of home parking space to a PEV owner, measured by the reduced vehicle ownership cost, ranges from $2399 USD to 10,802 USD. Finally, the total incremental shadow value, relative to the 2015 situation, of the home parking availability for PEV owners increases over time due to both improvement in home parking availability and increase in the PEV population, and is estimated to reach over 2.51 billion USD by 2025 (U.S. dollars in 2015 level).

Toward high-throughput defect density quantification: A comparison of techniques for irradiated samples

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is an established tool used for the investigation of defects in materials. Traditionally, diffraction contrast techniques—two-beam bright-field and weak-beam dark-field—have been used to image defects due to contrast sensitivity from weak lattice strains. Use of these methods entail an intricate tilt series of imaging using different diffracting vectors, g, to verify the g•b invisibility criterion relative to the different defect types and habit planes inherent to the material. Recently, the addition of down-zone imaging and STEM imaging has also proven to be effective imaging techniques for defect density analysis. Interest in nanocrystalline (NC) materials, spurred by their conjectured superior properties compared to their coarse-grain counterparts, has been thriving and the investigation of their defect morphologies is essential. Maneuvering within NC samples in the TEM adds another layer of difficulty making the aforementioned techniques not practical for application to specimens with complex microstructures. For this reason, we have devised a protocol for identifying NC grains optimally oriented for quantitative analysis using NanoMegas ASTAR automated crystal orientation mapping (ACOM) in the TEM. In this work, we conduct a series of experiments assessing the effectiveness of conventional two-beam bright-field, weak-beam dark-field, and down-zone STEM imaging. Here, we also evaluate an ACOM-assisted multibeam imaging method and compare defect density results obtained using each technique in an irradiated nanocrystalline Au sample.

Quantification of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein expression from mRNA vaccines using isotope dilution mass spectrometry

The advent of mRNA vaccine technology has been vital in rapidly creating and manufacturing COVID-19 vaccines at an industrial scale. To continue to accelerate this leading vaccine technology, an accurate method is needed to quantify antigens produced by the transfection of cells with a mRNA vaccine product. This will allow monitoring of protein expression during mRNA vaccine development and provide information on how changes to vaccine components affects the expression of the desired antigen. Developing novel approaches that allow for high-throughput screening of vaccines to detect changes in antigen production in cell culture prior to in vivo studies could aid vaccine development. Here, we have developed and optimized an isotope dilution mass spectrometry method to detect and quantify the spike protein expressed after transfection of baby hamster kidney cells with expired COVID-19 mRNA vaccines. Five peptides of the spike protein are simultaneously quantified and provide assurance that protein digestion in the region of the target peptides is complete since results between the five peptides had a relative standard deviation of less than 15 %. In addition, two housekeeping proteins, actin and GAPDH, are quantified in the same analytical run to account for any variation in cell growth within the experiment. IDMS allows a precise and accurate means to quantify protein expression by mammalian cells transfected with an mRNA vaccine.
